This Mother's Day message from the “What Was I Made For?” series highlights Jochebed, the mother of Moses—a woman of bold faith who trusted God with her son's life in the face of danger. Her story reminds us to trust the invisible God to do visible things, to act in faith, and to pass on our faith to the next generation. Even in a broken world, God still honors and works through the role of motherhood in powerful, unexpected ways.   Recorded: May 11, 2025

Please rate and review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts & Audible! --- Today marks a first on the podcast. Last year, I reviewed Gerard Johnstone's horror movie M3GAN (see Season 2, Episode 4) but after a recent rewatch with my wife, I found I have more to say about the PG-13 killer doll flick. I'm surprised by how much of the movie works as a cautionary tale for parents, highlighting certain anxieties of parenthood and the absolute wrong ways of handling them. So to my fellow tiny-human-wranglers, pull up a chair! The Gospel of Musical Theatre

We fixed everything in the real world so all women are happy and powerful. Just kidding... but we ARE talking about The Barbie Movie! We're so excited to be joined by Arwen Myers, executive director of the podcast, musicals aficionado – and the person Barbie was made for – to talk about Greta Gerwig's blockbuster 2023 summer hit. Is it a musical? We think it is.   We talk about: "Pink" – An almost Broadway-level opening number that establishes the all-pink world of Barbieland before everything goes haywire. "Push" – A very specific in-joke for a very specific generation of kids, and a cathartic moment for anybody who's ever experienced mansplaining. "The Monologue" – America Ferrera's iconic speech about the impossible contradictions inherent in being a woman in the 21st century. It's the film's articulation of Gospel. How is this monologue good news? "I'm Just Ken" – The film's most obvious musical moment – and one of the greatest production numbers of the 21st century. How do we feel about the fact that Ryan Gosling steals every scene he's in? "What Was I Made For?" – Billie Eilish's Oscar-winning ballad, Barbie's eleven o'clock number, and perhaps the most pregnant question the film asks. Is Barbie a prophet? A savior? You'll hear Lizzo, Matchbox Twenty, America Ferrera, Ryan Gosling and Billy Eilish from the film's 2023 soundtrack. Continue the conversation with us on Instagram @gospelofmt!

What Was I Made For? - Jason Ballard | The Gospel According to Mark | (Mark 10:13-31) June 16, 2024 Some have called The Gospel According to Mark a passion narrative with a long introduction, acknowledging that Mark gives a disproportionate amount of time to the final week of Jesus' life. This focus will allow us to emphasize the cross and the fact that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. All in all, Mark acts as a very comprehensive discipleship manual that exalts the servant King, Jesus and invites us to follow him. Billie Eilish has a new record out and I wanted to talk about my burden to talk to young people about what has been stolen from them. Billie Elish has been gifted by God in the writing and performance of songs. Her song What Was I Made For is heartbreaking because it is so beautiful, but also because of the question it asks. I want to share with you my response to her and all women.  What does God's Word say? Mark 16:1-81 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. 2 Very early on the first day of the week, just after sunrise, they were on their way to the tomb 3 and they asked each other, “Who will roll the stone away from the entrance of the tomb?”4 But when they looked up, they saw that the stone, which was very large, had been rolled away. 5 As they entered the tomb, they saw a young man dressed in a white robe sitting on the right side, and they were alarmed.6 “Don't be alarmed,” he said. “You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified. He has risen! He is not here. See the place where they laid him. 7 But go, tell his disciples and Peter, ‘He is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him, just as he told you.'”8 Trembling and bewildered, the women went out and fled from the tomb. They said nothing to anyone, because they were afraid.Luke 12:4-74 “I tell you, my friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. 5 But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear him who, after your body has been killed, has authority to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear him. 6 Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. 7 Indeed, the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Don't be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.Proverbs 31:25-3125 Strength and dignity are her clothing,    and she laughs at the time to come.26 She opens her mouth with wisdom,    and the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.27 She looks well to the ways of her household    and does not eat the bread of idleness.28 Her children rise up and call her blessed;    her husband also, and he praises her:29 “Many women have done excellently,    but you surpass them all.”30 Charm is deceitful, and beauty is vain,    but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.31 Give her of the fruit of her hands,    and let her works praise her in the gatesEpisode 1,504 Links: Billie Eilish - What Was I Made For? Join hosts Shaun and Rachael Reynolds in their engrossing podcast, "What Was I Made For?". This episode dives deep into their personal battles with mental health issues. Rachael shares her experience of overcoming obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and a discussion ensues on the therapeutic practices of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and engaging in supportive dialogue. Shaun shares his own struggle with persevering mental health issues, emphasizing the significance of communication and not enduring in silence. They motivate listeners to approach mental health issues as injuries to be attended to, with a keen understanding that therapy is not a 'one size fits all' solution. The episode takes a turn as it dives into a deeply personal battle with severe health anxiety. It gives a detailed account of the whirlwind journey from diagnosis and testing to reactions from loved ones, culminating in therapy discussions. It spotlights the complicated nature of mental health and the vast range of emotions it generates in those affected and their support system. An enlightening debate on the current state of mental health awareness in the educational system is covered, addressing the concern of whether enough is being done to support children in academic institutions. With an aim at a future where mental health is of equal importance, this episode provides a stepping stone towards that goal. The conversation then shifts to discussing the impact of social media on young individuals in today's digital world and proposes a contentious solution of limiting access to specific platforms until the age of 18. As educators, parents, or simply as someone wanting to gain insight into your wellness and mental health, this episode is a must-listen.   Don't miss out on exclusive content and updates by following us on: Instagram: @whatwasimadeforpod  TikTok: @whatwasimadeforpod YouTube: @whatwasimadeforpod Send us your thoughts and questions at whatwasimadeforpod@gmail.com Hosted by: Shaun & Rachael Reynolds Music by: Black Prez & Shaun Reynolds © What Was I Made For? is a Reynolds Studios Inc. I can't even remember how I came to hear ‘Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish. It has caused me to want to respond to her. I had initially listened to her music in an attempt to relate to my daughter, but once I really listened to the lyrics in this song, I realized how horrific it was. Then, I heard another song by Billie Eilish. We have the opportunity to speak into young people's lives by using popular culture and this is what we have the opportunity to do with this song. When I first heard “What Was I Made For”, my heart melted and then it pained me. I delve into what God made Billie Eilish for. It is mostly from His word that I want to address this. We ruminate on this: we were made for something and it is not to become a sex toy to others. What does God's Word say? Mark 16:1-8 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so that they might go to anoint Jesus' body. And yes, I am available for speaking engagements.]Good morning, folks! It's that time again. Here are five positive things that'll hopefully make you smile, make you laugh, and make you think. And in case you missed it, check out last week's edition.1. Tom Junod's 1998 Esquire Profile of Fred RogersI'm going way back for this one because it's so damn good. In 1968, Rev. Fred Rogers, better known as Mister Rogers, launched his iconic program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, which ran for 33 seasons and captured the hearts of several generations along the way. Five years before his death, he was covered by journalist Tom Junod for Esquire in what is widely considered one of the best celebrity profiles ever written. Every now and again, I go back and read it and marvel at Mister Roger's approach to life and the gorgeous and moving way in which Junod captures it on the page. It's the kind of piece that dares you to have a bit more faith in humanity, my favorite genre. It was also the basis for the 2019 feature film A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood, starring Tom Hanks.2. David Mack's Interview With a Disgruntled Oompa LoompaA few weeks ago, a disastrous “Willy Wonka chocolate factory experience” in Glasgow, Scotland went viral for being, hands down, one of the funniest and most intriguing public failures in recent memory. It was so bad that the whole thing was shut down within hours of opening after pissed off parents called the police and demanded refunds. This may sound pretty negative, but trust me: it's definitely the laugh you need. David Mack of Vulture landed an exclusive interview with Kirsty Paterson, a very poorly paid actor who played an Oompa Loompa and went viral for an iconic photo of her agonizing role in the production. 3. WaPo Columnist Monica Hesse Takes On Sen. Kyrsten Sinema's BrandSo, I have a cardinal rule that I follow pretty zealously: I don't mock or criticize anyone's personal appearance, even people I may find particularly unsavory, because how someone looks is, I believe, immaterial to their character. If someone sucks as a human being, aren't there valid reasons to criticize them without resorting to personal appearance? That said, I also don't like hypocrisy, and Sen. Kyrsten Sinema, the retiring senior senator from Arizona, has a fairly solid claim to the Biggest Hypocrite on Capitol Hill. Part of that hypocrisy is the way in which she intentionally uses clothing to code as an open and enlightened elected official while holding political positions that are anything but open and enlightened. It's quite a frustrating dynamic, and fortunately, Washington Post columnist Monica Hesse has delivered a humorous nugget of an essay getting to the heart of the matter.4. Saturday Night Live + ScarJo Brilliantly Parody Sen. Katie BrittThis past week, Pres. Biden delivered his State of the Union address to considerable praise from journalists and voters alike. The GOP response was delivered by Sen. Katie Britt of Alabama, and it kinda did the exact opposite. Not only was it widely panned across the political spectrum—Republican politicos called it a “disaster”—but it was revealed the next day by reporter Jonathan M. Katz that Sen. Britt had blatantly lied about a key anecdote involving the horrific trauma experienced by a migrant woman. Pretty nasty business. Fortunately, Saturday Night Live tapped Scarlett Johansson for a hilarious cold open parody of Sen. Britt's response. It may not be close to the consequences the Senator deserves for her exploitative and cruel nonsense, but it'll make you laugh. 5. Ryan Gosling Steals the Show at Last Night's OscarsThis year's edition of the Academy Awards was pretty damn good. From host Jimmy Kimmel nailing Trump with a particularly biting zinger to Billie Eilish delivering an exquisite live performance of “What Was I Made For?” to John Cena appearing in nothing but Birkenstocks and a placard onstage, there was fun for everyone. But it was Ryan Gosling's phenomenal performance of “I'm Just Ken” that broke the internet, proving that, once again, there is seemingly nothing Ryan Gosling can't do that won't make you root for him. There's a hunger in this world for God. You may not know it; you may not feel it. But the insatiable need for a transcendent love that surpasses all understanding, is at the root of all our angst and anguish. Just think about this year's Grammy Song of the Year, "What Was I Made For?" It may be the Billie Eilish tune for the movie Barbie, but it may as well be the soundtrack of this generation's burning question: What's the purpose of my life? Why am I here? With mounting levels of despair, depression and suicide, the secular world in all its technology, A.I. and social media, needs answers. And I know that the Word of God is what they're looking for. On this episode of Lighthouse Faith podcast, theologian, author and Christian defender Dr. Alex McFarland, joins me to talk about my new book, "Light For Today: A 365 Day Devotional from the Lighthouse." I've rarely inserted myself as the subject of these podcasts, but I wanted to let listeners know that God is Love. And whatever needs we have He can meet. It takes a daily walk with Him. Whatever our reasons for tuning in or out this Super Bowl Sunday, as movie fans, there's no denying the impact the event has in terms of trailers and TV spots, with Paramount, Universal, and Disney all investing a record $7 million per 30-second Super Bowl spot. Paramount has three spots booked, featuring "Bob Marley: One Love," John Krasinski's "IF," and "A Quiet Place: Day One." Disney is expected to promote its Father's Day release "Inside Out 2" and the trailer for Marvel Studios' sole 2024 release "Deadpool 3,". Universal may feature spots for various films, including "Twisters," "Kung Fu Panda 4," "Monkeyman," and "The Fall Guy." Sony and Warner Bros are notably absent from Super Bowl spots this year, and there's no confirmation from Apple or Netflix about promoting their major projects during the event either. Despite rumors of its cancellation, Marvel Studios' Wonder Man series starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is apparently back on track and actively in production according to leaked set photos and footage circulating the web. Production of the series, led by Shang Chi director Destin Daniel Cretton and producer Andrew Guest, began in April but was paused due to last year's WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. The images in question tease an in-universe film franchise depicting a marquee with the Wonder Man title card along with the character's logo and emblem. While we are lacking on official details, including a release date, the latest we've heard is that the series will fall under the new Marvel Spotlight banner and Sir Ben Kingsley is expected to reprise his role as Trevor Slattery. Unfortunately we learned today that a crew member who was a rigger has sadly died on set after falling from the rafters. The on-set accident did not occur during filming and we certainly share the condolences of the cast and crew. Although it debuted at the top of the box office, Matthew Vaughn's $200 million would be February blockbuster, Argylle, has not performed well, with an $18 million domestic and $35 million global start, coupled with a C+ CinemaScore. The star-studded ensemble cast failed to attract audiences as predicted by tracking. Despite Apple's substantial financial prowess, these big-budget films, such as Napoleon and Killers of the Flower Moon, are not proving profitable when considering the overall motion picture profit and loss sheet, lacking ancillaries like foreign TV, theme park tie-ins, or cruise ship exploitation, prompting questions about the streamers long-term viability. During the documentary "Grounded 2: Making The Last of Us Part 2," creative director Neil Druckmann hinted at the possibility of The Last of Us Part 3, revealing that he has a conceptual idea for another chapter in the story. Druckmann emphasized that while the first two games had clear concepts of parental love and the pursuit of justice, the potential third installment would be its own unique narrative. He clarified that a previously mentioned story about Joel's brother, Tommy, was not outlined for The Last of Us Part 3, but rather a separate project that was shelved temporarily due to other priorities at Naughty Dog. Elsewhere in the Last of Us franchise, Schitt's Creek star Catherine O'Hara has been cast in an undisclosed role for the HBO show's second season. 2024 Grammy Winners: o Best pop solo performance: Miley Cyrus, "Flowers" o Best música urbana album: Karol G, "Mañana Será Bonito" o Best country album: Lainey Wilson, "Bell Bottom Country" o Best R&B song: SZA, "Snooze" o Best pop vocal album: Taylor Swift, "Midnights" o Song of the year: "What Was I Made For?" Billie Eilish "What Was I Made For?", this song is important for the film Barbie as well as for the career of Billie and Finneas. The praise of the song is well deserved. This is a production breakdown of the song and the evolution that changed a pivotal scene in Barbie. Iconography unpackages music with artists, songwriters and producers as well as helping those in need. On the show James read “letters of love” from worldwide fans to the guests. The show exists to let the creatives know that their music still has an impact on many. From worldwide smash hits to album cuts, bonus tracks and B-sides. The show unpackages it all! Billie Eilish Outs Variety for Outing Her

Billie Eilish just came out...or did she? In a cover story with Variety last month, the “What Was I Made For?” singer revealed that she's attracted to women. This caused a big stir online, since she's always been linked to guys and has even been accused of queerbaiting in the past. At Variety's Hitmakers Event on Saturday, a reporter asked Billie if she meant to come out in the cover story. She laughed it off then, but now, she says Variety basically outed her. People online are divided. Some say Variety was outta line, while others think Billie had already outed herself and Variety deserves a pass.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

ExtraChristy - Podcast

You Rock You Rocka sermon by Rev. J. Christy Ramsey DOWNLOAD A LIVE RECORDING Audio from worship at the 10 AM Worship Service August 27, 2023 at St Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City, Nevadaedited from a flawless transcription made by edigitaltranscriptions all errors are mine. Matthew 16:13-20 Sermons also available free on iTunes Peter, Peter, Peter. What a shaky guy to build a church on. I mean, this guy, we know about him; right? He’s either way up there or way down here. I mean, Jesus calls him “Satan.” That’s not good. Why does he pick him? And we know he’s not his favorite. You know, there is the beloved disciple. Not Peter. And now this sermon is banned in Florida. Check. So Peter gets into trouble over and over again. He denies Jesus. He’s telling Jesus he’s doing it wrong. Later on he tells him not to do things. He’s got the Satan thing going on. And just two chapters ago, now, I don’t know how that is in real-time because, you know, they didn’t really have the timeline and all this real-time clock stuff. But two chapters ago he did the whole, you know, falling in the lake kind of thing. You know, Jesus out there in the lake. It’s a great scene, wonderful time, very, very holy, storm, Jesus. Oh, things are great. And what’s Peter do? Horn in on the action. Hey, I’m coming. I’m getting me some of this. Out in the lake he goes, and of course, boop, down he goes. You know. Well, you know, I’m thinking it doesn’t really say. This is not Bible. This is Christy. So, you know, you may want to move to the darkened corners of the church for a nap. But I wonder how those disciples felt about him? You know? You have this person, right, this person who is absolutely wrong but very sure of it. And you know that kind of people. You know, the less they know, the surer they are, like that makes up for ignorance. I don’t know. And if you don’t have that friend, it’s you. So, you know, think about that. So, and I can’t imagine the disciples are happy with Peter. He’s always mouthing off, getting in trouble, showing off, showboating, like he’s the best; you know. And they’re fishermen, you know, they’re not, you know, some kind of – really I’m thinking they’re a little rough-and-ready kind of guys, I’m thinking. And I’m thinking, you know, they’re out there in the storm, trying to stay in the boat. And some guy says, “Oh, I’m going to get out of the boat and go walk to Jesus.” “Peter, we’re barely keeping alive. Stay in your seat. Get down. You’re rocking the boat.” “Guys and Dolls” reference, thank you for those who picked it up. And he goes out there and sinks like…A rock. A rock. I’m thinking that’s where he started getting the name Rock. I’m thinking it wasn’t Jesus at all. It was those fun-loving guys, the disciples. Can you imagine that, Mr. Showboat sinking away? Hey, how you doing today, Rock? Ha ha. You okay? Steady there. Watch out, there’s a puddle, ha ha ha. Rock guy, huh, get a load of him. And down he goes. Hey, remember this? You know. I’m thinking they gave it to him. And in front of Jesus, behind his back, I don’t know, it don’t matter because Jesus seems to know all the stuff, no matter what goes on. So I’m thinking that Jesus knew about that. And Jesus took that slam, that label, that putdown, and said, yeah, you’re the rock. And on this rock I’m going to build my church. Isn’t that just like Jesus? Not to argue, but to transform? To take what we thought was so bad, so awful about ourselves, our biggest failure, our greatest shame, our imperfections, everything we thought we did wrong, our lack of faith, and said, “Yeah, on that is I’m building my church.” Boy, do we need that message today. I mean, everybody’s telling us who we are. They think they know. I mean, our own school system is joining a suit in social media because of all the negative information and labels and bullying that’s coming in over Facebook and TikTok and all the other things that are out there that our kids have to deal with that we didn’t have to that tells them they’re not good enough, they’re ugly, or not pretty enough, or they’re not as good as they are, or they have to take that picture next. Even among school systems in the city is suing for, and rightly so. And if it isn’t social media and the kids and the things, it’s the advertisers have got our numbers down. They’re tracking your web browser. They’re watching what you watch. They’re slicing and dicing you and putting in ads to make sure that you are the most susceptible to what they’re trying to sell. In fact, they’re selling you to others, saying would you like some Episcopalians interested in some fine wines? I’m just guessing. They would put the church roll out. It’s out there. And it’s not just this. You know, politics is coming. Oh, my gosh, do they want to tell you who they are, who you are, and what you should believe, and how it is, and what you should be outraged about, and who you should be angry with, and how this thing’s world should be viewed. We need this Jesus today that says what you think is the worst is something God can use to build the best. And no other than the contemporary philosopher, Taylor Swift, says – yeah, that’s who I read. So deal with it. That’s okay. Yeah, you’re not getting any Jeff books of the saints up here. That’s coming, so brace yourselves. Okay. Taylor Swift says an excellent speech in her concert. And one of the – the firm quote in there is she tells her fans, a lot of these young women who are told how to be and how to look and how to feel and how to act. Taylor Swift says: “You are not somebody else’s opinion of you.” You are not somebody else’s opinion of you. Boy, good old Simon needed to hear that when they were all calling him the Rock. Good old Taylor Swift. Who are you? Who are you? I’ve come to the conclusion not everybody loves and memorizes movies as well as I do, and we’re working on that. But until then, there’s a movie called “Secondhand Lions.” Robert Duvall we’re going to see in a minute. And somebody – and he’s having a bad day. And somebody asks him, “Who do you think you are, old man?” Oh, don’t do that to Robert, even on a good day. “Who do you think you are, old man?” And this is Hub McCann’s answer. “That’s who I am.” I remember having a spirited discussion with one of the patriarchs of the church about what picture should you put in an obituary? The dashing young soldier going off to war 40 years ago? Or the weathered, seasoned, bald man the last time we saw him? Who are you? My father-in-law was Bruce Speegle. Bruce Speegle was the district engineer for PennDOT. They have hills there. They say mountains, but I will not insult you by saying they were mountains. But they have ups and downs. And the ups and downs, back in the day, came up with the idea, have you seen those runaway truck ramps, you know, where they have the little thing, and the big old gravel, and the pickup – the pickup. The semi is supposed to steer off there when they don’t have brakes and go into the gravel, and the gravel is supposed – this was controversial. This wasn’t going to work. Now, Bruce was a district engineer. Wasn’t a truck driver. Didn’t drive a semi. And Bruce put one in. And oh, the things they talked about. Now, Bruce was a man of few words. On my wedding day, I spent the whole day with him, and he had plenty of opportunities to tell me what’s what and who’s for and whatever. And had every reason to because at that point this guy, most unlikely to be a minister, was going to seminary. He might have had some words. But we had the rehearsal, and was doing like an hour to get the wedding done, rehearsal, and up and down. We had a family dinner, a lunch, very nice lunch, family lunch. We’re all sitting at the table, meeting everybody. And we went to the hotel, we changed for the wedding, all in the same room. We had the wedding, of course. And he was there. And then afterwards we had a reception into the evening. That whole time Bruce said two words to me: “Have fun.” That was Bruce. Back to the runaway truck ramp. It wasn’t going to work. Boondoggle. Waste of time. Not say safe, ba da da, all that stuff. Bruce got it built, invited the press to a demonstration. Got the truck at the top of the hill. Got the brakes disabled. And when it was coming down the hill, Bruce was in the passenger seat. To this day, my mother-in-law is still angry. That’s who Bruce was. He didn’t have to say anything. He was in that truck. Down they went. And of course it worked. Bruce was an engineer. He did the math. He didn’t have to talk. That’s who he was. There’s a movie out called “Barbie.” Perhaps you’ve heard of it. As I understand it, I’ve been told I must go see it by my daughter, who’s in her 30s. I don’t know when she became my parent, but okay. In it I understand Barbie wonders what she was made for. The ideals of – they play with the ideas of Barbie as perfection and success and rich and happy all the time. And suddenly she’s not. I’d like to close with the song from the movie, from Billy Eilish, and close with the lyrics to “What Was I Made For?” And I hope you consider that, as well.

This song about loss and an inherent sadness is especially moving. Outro music: Adele's tribute to George Michael at the 2017 Grammys. Podcast production by Jessamine Molli.
