She's back! After the smash success that was the first M3GAN that released in January of 2023, M3GAN has returned for her second adventure from Blumhouse. I enjoyed the first M3GAN way more than I should have at the time, despite it being a relatively tame, paint by numbers killer robot movie. I appreciated the attempt to at least tie it into the idea of heavy technological reliance when parenting; it was more than I expected from a mid-tier Blumhouse movie. Admittedly, that description makes up almost the entirety of the studio's output but nevertheless. The sequel, from the trailers, looked bigger and badder in just about every way. Is it sure to be one of the most entertaining films of the summer? Find out in this review!M3GAN 2.0:Directed by: Gerard JohnstoneScreenplay by: Gerard JohnstoneStory by: Gerard Johnstone and Akela CooperBased on characters created by: Akela Cooper & James WanProduced by: James Wan, Jason Blum, Allison WilliamsExecutive Producers: Gerard Johnstone, Adam Hendricks, Greg Gilreath, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, Mark D. On this week's episode, Megan talks about M3GAN 2.0 (2:58), the sci-fi action sequel which sees the return of the murderous robotic doll, directed by Gerard Johnstone and starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw, and Jenna Davis. Flawed yet intermittently fun, it's inferior to the sharply crafted and delightful original horror film. Then, Megan talks about RENT FREE (17:17), Fernando Andrés's indie comedy about two queer best friends (Jacob Roberts, David Treviño) attempting to live for a year without paying rent in Austin, Texas. Lastly, Dave and Megan discuss MY MOM JAYNE (29:01), Mariska Hargitay's emotional documentary about her mother, actress and icon Jayne Mansfield, as she explores her grief, delves into her mother's life, and reconciles her mother's image and legacy. It's a compelling and vulnerable film that we both recommend. And on our Patreon bonus episode, we discuss 1986 sci-fi thriller THE MANHATTAN PROJECT, starring John Lithgow, Christopher Collet, and Cynthia Nixon!

In this episode, I will also share with you precisely for whom this book is for... strap on your seatbelt, get ready for a high-octane mini-episode because in 7 days, we're about to birth a book! Say hi: https://www.instagram.com/melissallarena/ About the book: A fertile imagination can cast a powerful and compelling vision that will drive you to turn it into your reality, even if it's never been imagined as possible for mothers before. In this book, I feature my insights along with those of 25 highly imaginative guests, culminating with the CEO of GivingTuesday, Asha Curran, as a case study of using a fertile imagination to its maximum. To call "Fertile Imagination" a book is perhaps the wrong term to use. It's a call to action, encouraging us to break free from the self-imposed limitations we put on ourselves and seize the vast potential that lies beyond our current view. It's a roadmap for readers to reconnect with their inner creativity. It encourages us to think beyond what we've been conditioned to believe about our limitations, to overcome impostor syndrome, and to break free from feeling stuck. Needless to say, "Fertile Imagination" is a must-read for any mother who has ever asked herself, "What if I want more?". It's a testament to the fact that you can be an incredible parent and still pursue your dreams. Jenna Davis, Founder of Life in Germany: Fertile Imagination is a virtual powerhouse of real-life scenarios that will help any woman (Moms especially) navigate today's workplace. I wish I had been given this kind of access to smart women back in the 70s when I was raising my boys as a single mother. Kathy Ryan, Retired Managing Director Global Operations Ogilvy Worldwide: Hearing from moms like you has turned Fertile Imagination into a rally cry….a decisive call to action to let go of what's stopping you and re-engage everything you've got to drive really change forward….and as I thought about this…I came up with this….this book is from my heart to you. To the moms who were denied their right to mat leave To the moms whose birth plans were ripped to shreds To the moms who are still in the trenches pumping themselves with hormones to have a child To the moms who have twins who were pushed to get c-sections To the moms who wanted vbacs and were hijacked of their dream To the moms who feed their babies formula and who are made to feel like shit for doing so To the moms who have degrees up the wazoo and opted out to raise humans To the moms who have ever felt insecure or no longer important in the eyes of society To the moms who were treated inhumanely during the pandemic when childcare was off the table To the moms who own patents To the moms who are at the helm of leadership of world-class organizations To the moms who rather climbs mountains than stay in the valley of hellish experiences on any given day To the moms who can't To the moms who can To the moms who were elected into government positions To the moms who hold Emmys or Sundance awards To the moms who built million or billion dollar brands while being a mom To the moms who cared for a sick child or beat their own illnesses to continue being a mom To the moms who are unafraid to get into colosseums as if they too were a gladiator To the moms who mom alone To the moms who have had enough To the moms who want more To the moms who have finally figured it out and want to get ready to take matters into their own hands **I want to hear from you! I'll be on Instagram on 10/31 and if you are not yet following me there, then pause this episode and do that today. Have you ever fantasized about relocating your family and yourself to Europe? What about Australia? Or are you the mom who is being whisked away abroad because your partner was just granted a VISA? This is for you, my fellow globetrotter! Today, we have Jenna Davis, who relocated to Germany for a boy, got married, and now has two children. Originally from Canada, Jenna has gone from ex-pat to immigrant in Dusseldorf, Germany. In this conversation, we discuss what you can do in a foreign country (launch an online business, get a Ph.D., etc.), how ex-pats bring a unique perspective to foreign countries, and how you too can make this work assignment the perfect time to reset your own professional identity. When Jenna came to Germany, her yoga pants and her messy bun didn't quite fit in with Dusseldorf's excess of Prada shoes and Gucci bags. Moving to Düsseldorf was like that first day of Kindergarten… 24/7. She didn't know anyone and the Germans looked at her funny. This is also when she turned her career in marketing and tourism into something bigger. And what started as a small local ex-pat blog in Düsseldorf has now grown into an expert-led online relocation course, a YouTube channel with more than 40K subscribers, and multiple Facebook communities growing strong. At the end of the day, the most important takeaway we can learn from all this is that life is too short. What if the thing you've been wanting to do is actually going to be the best decision you will ever make? Hopefully, this episode will inspire you to take a leap as well! In this episode, you will hear: Life expectations before having kids vs. being in a whole different place decades later Expat vs. being an immigrant How living in a new country can change you? European vs. North American lifestyles Living in a place where you don't know the language Giving birth in a foreign country and what that was like for Jenna German healthcare vs. Canadian maternity healthcare insurance A funny chat about pelvis floors because you need to laugh What is the unique perspective of being an ex-pat or foreigner in a new country? Marketing to travel blogger to expert of a specific area What if you go on an ex-pat assignment with your family? How can you use that time to advance or experiment with your own career? Raising kids in a different culture What if you are scared to launch your own business? Pros and cons of being a mom with a flexible business Ways to start exploring whether self-employment is right for you and your family How to launch a business in a foreign country? Does fear ever go away from being in a new country or being a business owner? What if you want to relocate to Germany? Coming out of this period, sluggish yet motivated, so many of us can use this book to help us wake up! If you're looking to refresh, reenergize, and yes, reimagine a better version of your life, this book is for you. I loved the hilarious, yet poignant stories about motherhood today and the window into the world of those who've gone for it – and did it. - Macollvie Neel, Brooklyn, NY This chapter is about getting in touch with your creative, playful, imaginative side. The part of yourself that perhaps felt freer before you became a parent, before you chose your identity and had a lot of responsibilities weighing you down. In helping you get in touch with your more playful, creative self, it not only helps you on a path toward greater happiness and fulfillment, but it also helps you to feel more fulfilled as a parent. – Mom/PR The words: imagination, play and fun are not the usual things we as mothers think of when wondering how to get a grip back on our career and I believe it provides a really fresh take and lots of food for thought for mothers reading it. I think that the tone is so energetic and fresh that it is why I would pick it up. – Latina Mom/Positive Psychology Coach Melissa is a mom of three with big dreams who tells it like it is. She draws on her own experiences and the experiences of professionals she's interviewed for her podcast to reflect on the plight of the mother. How do women conform to or challenge the traditional “mom script”? If you're a mom, what can you do to break the “cultural glass ceiling” to be yourself and a great parent, all without having to force yourself into a mom mold that doesn't fit you? Melissa is like a great friend, honest and wise and funny, telling you about her life and asking you to reflect on yours. This book is a great purchase for moms in every stage of life. – Aspiring Novelist, Librarian, Mom To Two Kiddos In her book, Melissa shows us that motherhood does not have to be a pause or an end of your pre-child self. With guidance from her podcast guests, she encourages us to think big, find what lights us up, think big, and move towards our goals with the steps that fit the reality of our lives as they are today. In doing so we honor and inspire our child(ren), and our own inner child. – Single Mom To A 12-Year Old Boy

On this week's Episode, Will, Ian & Jenny suffer a truly catastrophic loss, then try to solve it with machines. With a Robot. With AI. M3GAN takes the concept of the killer doll movie into the 21st Century, improving on plastic and AA batteries with ever-learning AI, a world-class wardrobe and a fuckton of sass. What starts out as an emotional therapy robot for recently orphaned Cady (Violet McGraw) turns horrific as M3GAN (Amie Donald & Jenna Davis) takes her directive to protect Cady at all costs way too literally. M3GAN creator and aunt-turned-guardian Gemma (Allison Williams) is the only one who starts to see the cracks in M3GAN's otherwise flawless exterior, worrying for Cady's safety. Yes, this sounds like a Chucky ripoff, but director Gerard Johnstone and crew, operating from an Akela Cooper (Malignant) script, know the exact approach needed for this kind of movie: a winking, gleeful romp that blissfully indulges in stupidity. It's a goddamn ridiculous blast and man, is this movie (and this year) so much better for it. Long live the new titanium flesh. --------------------------- Follow Daniel on: Twitter - @TheMovies_Pod Instagram - @themoviespod Letterboxd - https://letterboxd.com/Daniel_Berrios/
We made it to Lodgecast Episode 150! We wanted to make this a special episode so we reserved the spot for the new robot horror movie M3GAN. Ever since the 4-bone M3GAN trailer dropped last year, the entire World has been abuzz about M3GAN. Who is this artificially intelligent doll turned fashion icon? Well we found out, and accurately predicted that this film is just the start of the M3GAN franchise as M3GAN 2.0 has already been green-lit for release in 2025. This first M3GAN movie stars Amie Donald as M3GAN with Jenna Davis supplying M3GAN's voice. Allison Williams plays M3GAN's creator and Violet McGraw plays the girl who becomes attached to M3GAN. As artificial intelligence rapidly advances and wreaks havoc on our lives and livelihoods, M3GAN will be there to remind us of the terrors we are actively unleashing!

This week John, Dave & Jeff went with the teenagers to see M3GAN, the film that apparently makes young people in the theater want to watch Twitch, check their Snaps, record the screen, vape, and yell at each other for the duration. Lots of “bathroom” breaks, too. If only M3GAN would jump out of the screen and parent THESE kids by kicking their asses. The movie is about Allison Williams not wanting to parent her niece, so she develops a doll designed to make Mark Zuckerberg look like Winnie the Pooh. It's not terrifying, but it's spooky and thrilling enough with a skosh of humor to justify it's $30mill opening weekend. For this week's main podcast review, I am joined by Josh Parham, Dan Bayer & Cody Dericks. This week we're reviewing Gerard Johnstone's "M3GAN," starring Allison Williams, Jenna Davis & Violet McGraw. 2023 is off to a fun start. Expectations were low for this one, but by leaning into the film's ridiculous premise with a degree of self-awareness, a new horror icon has been born, which will supply us with endless memes and Halloween costumes for years to come. What did we ultimately think of the story, the horror, the campiness, and the performances? We discuss all of these points and more as we attempt to give M3GAN the review she deserves.
