Your brand is where it's at, folks, but maybe you've forgotten the marketing fundamentals that really make it work. AI is changing legal marketing faster than most law firms realize. In episode 617 of the Lawyerist Podcast, Stephanie Everett talks with Conrad Saam, founder of Mockingbird, about what law firms need to understand as AI begins reshaping marketing, reporting, decision making, and the business of running a firm.  Conrad shares why AI may give smaller, more entrepreneurial law firms a new way to compete against larger firms with bigger budgets and more data. He explains how firms can use AI to build smarter internal systems, improve reporting, and rethink the tools they rely on every day.  The conversation also explores leadership under pressure through Conrad's volunteer work in ski patrol and search and rescue. From staying calm in high stress situations to debriefing after things go wrong, he shares practical lessons law firm owners can apply when managing clients, teams, campaigns, and business decisions.  If you are trying to understand what AI really means for law firm growth, legal marketing, and the future of small firms, this episode offers a grounded look at what is changing, what is overhyped, and what law firm owners should pay attention to next.  Listen to our previous episodes on Legal Marketing, AI & Smarter Law Firm Growth.  #603: Turn Expertise into Clients: Building Authority That AI Recognizes, with Karin Conroy Apple | Spotify | LTN  #584: How to Stay Human in the Age of AI Driven Law Firm Marketing, with Conroy Creative Apple | Spotify | LTN   #580: Smarter Law Firm Marketing: AI Tools That Actually Work, with FirmPilot Apple | Spotify | LTN  #577: Rethinking Law Firm Growth in the Age of AI, with Sam Harden Apple | Spotify | LTN   #550: Beyond Content: How AI is Changing Law Firm Marketing, with Gyi Tsakalakis and Conrad Saam Apple | Spotify | LTN  Apple | Spotify | LTN  Have thoughts about today's episode? Lunch Hour Legal Marketing
A Tale of Two Dashboards

Two dashboards. Two stories. One broken relationship. This week on Lunch Hour Legal Marketing, Conrad Saam and Gyi Tsakalakis unpack a client loss that wasn't really about performance; it was about measurement. The agency saw success. The law firm saw zero cases. And both were looking at completely different versions of reality. We break down a $11.5K paid search campaign that generated 64 leads at a $181 CPL with strong engagement metrics but still ended in termination. Why? Because the agency optimized for cost per lead, while the firm measured success by signed clients. No shared definition of a “good lead” meant no shared understanding of success. So what actually went wrong? And more importantly, how do you prevent it? We dig into: Why cost per lead is the wrong scoreboard for a firm measuring signed cases How “wanted leads” become the missing feedback loop in legal marketing The role of intake, attribution, and CRM gaps in distorting performance Why even strong campaigns fail when dashboards don't match reality How fractional CMOs can either bridge—or widen—the measurement divide At the center of it all is a simple problem: agencies and law firms are often not just disagreeing… they're not even reading the same watch. Lunch Hour Legal Marketing will be covering Vista Consulting Team's Baltimore event, A Seat at the Table. Conrad and Gyi will be at the PILMMA Super Summit in May. Gyi Tsakalakis and Conrad Saam break down the latest stats from Near Media and CallRail that are changing the game for legal marketing and law firm SEO. How many consumers actually know how personal injury lawyers are paid? And despite the hype, how relevant is AI in legal search right now? CallRail data shows AI touches are a very small part of inbound leads, but just how small? We also cover important local search statistics on when consumers choose to call without clicking your website. The News: CallRail is giving us easy, generous access to their AI resources. AI is not just another tool. It is changing how clients think, act, and make decisions. In episode 612 of the Lawyerist Podcast, Stephanie Everett talks with Cat Casey about what lawyers need to understand before AI creates problems they cannot fix.  As more clients turn to tools like ChatGPT, lawyers are facing new challenges around trust, accuracy, and confidentiality. Cat explains why even lawyers who choose not to use AI still need to understand it, and how failing to do so can create real risks for both lawyers and their clients.  They share practical ways to approach AI with the right mindset, including how to think about its limitations, how to use it as a thinking partner instead of a replacement, and how to guide clients who may not understand the consequences of using it.  If you want to stay ahead of where the legal profession is heading, this episode offers a clear and actionable place to start.  Listen to our previous episodes on Using AI in Law Practice.  #601 – Beyond Chatbots: Using Agentic AI in Law Firm Intake, with Matt Spiegel Apple | Spotify | LTN  #590 – Innovating Without Overwhelm: Practical AI Tips for Lawyers, with Graydon Trusler Apple | Spotify | LTN   #580 – Smarter Law Firm Marketing: AI Tools That Actually Work, with FirmPilot Apple | Spotify | LTN  #550 – Beyond Content: How AI is Changing Law Firm Marketing, with Gyi Tsakalakis and Conrad Saam Apple | Spotify | LTN  Links from the episode:   https://thetechnocat.com/about  Check out the episode on YouTube: https://youtu.be/PQwAxiNjbhY   Have thoughts about today's episode? In episode 608 of the Lawyerist Podcast, Stephanie Everett talks with former Big Law business development professional Megan Senese about the human side of legal marketing and why the most effective client development strategies often look less like selling and more like genuine connection.  For many lawyers, business development feels awkward, performative, and disconnected from the real work of practicing law. Megan challenges that assumption by showing how meaningful relationships, not sales tactics, are what actually drive sustainable growth.  They explore why traditional networking advice fails so many lawyers, how small thoughtful gestures can build stronger professional relationships, and why authenticity matters more than ever in a crowded legal marketplace. Megan also shares practical ideas for nurturing relationships, staying top of mind without being transactional, and approaching business development in a way that feels natural rather than forced.  If the idea of “doing marketing” makes you cringe, this episode offers a more sustainable approach to building relationships, trust, and ultimately a thriving legal practice.  Listen to our previous episodes on Law Firm Marketing & Differentiation.  #606: Breaking the Copycat Cycle: Building a Law Firm with Personality, with Patrick Patino Apple | Spotify | LTN  #580: Smarter Law Firm Marketing: AI Tools That Actually Work, with FirmPilot Apple | Spotify | LTN  #550: Beyond Content: How AI is Changing Law Firm Marketing, with Gyi Tsakalakis and Conrad Saam Apple | Spotify | LTN  #549: A Journey into Video Marketing, with Temi Siyanbade Apple | Spotify | LTN  #515: Simple Marketing Hacks Lawyers Swear By, with Gyi Tsakalakis Apple | Spotify | LTN   Links from the episode: https://stage.guide     Have thoughts about today's episode? Do What the Bots Cannot: How AI Is Reshaping Legal Marketing, Data Analysis and Biz Dev, But Not the Human Connection (Gyi Tsakalakis, AttorneySync)

Technically Legal

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 28, 2025 36:54

We welcome back legal marketing expert Gyi Tsakalakis, President of AttorneySync and host of the Lunch Hour Legal Marketing podcast. Five years after Gyi's first appearance on Technically Legal, he discusses the dramatic shifts in digital marketing for law firms, driven largely by the rise of artificial intelligence. Gyi highlights how AI is changing the landscape for lawyers, from automating back-office functions and data analysis to influencing content creation and search engine optimization (SEO). He explains why law firms must diversify their marketing channels beyond just Google to adapt to the new era of conversational search and AI overviews. Despite these technological advances, Gyi emphasizes that the human connection, including a simple handwritten note, remains the most powerful tool in an attorney's arsenal. He argues that as technology automates the mundane, it forces lawyers to focus on the relationships and empathy that truly differentiate their practice. Key Takeaways: Diversify Marketing Channels: Law firms must move beyond a "one-trick pony" approach with platforms like Google and diversify their client acquisition strategies to include social media, email, and local events. The Problem with Client Intake: Gyi discusses the persistent issue of lawyers not responding to inquiries and how AI can help automate certain parts of the intake process, though the human touch is still crucial for building trust. Do What the Bots Cannot: Attorneys should leverage AI for tasks that can be automated (e.g., scheduling, data analysis) to free up time to focus on complex legal work and building meaningful client relationships. AI for Data Analysis: A powerful, overlooked use case for AI in a law firm is analyzing internal data, such as call transcripts and financial records, to identify blind spots and inform marketing strategies. The Future of SEO and Search: Gyi predicts that search will become more conversational and influenced by AI Overviews and that ad-based models will be integrated into all major AI platforms.
