Merely Players is in the middle of a diverse and interesting 2023-24 season, currently showing the regional premiere of Hands on a Hardbody at the Merely Underground at 789 Tech Center Drive. Hands on a Hardbody is a 2013 country rock musical based on a 1997 documentary about a group of Texans who compete to win a new truck by keeping their hands on it the longest. This unconventional musical, with a book by Doug Wright and music by Amanda Green and Trey Anastasio of Phish, explores a wide array of human experiences and emotions, as the contestants reveal their stories through an upbeat score that fuses country, blues, and rock. Featuring an ensemble cast of local talent and an actual full size working truck, this show is fun for the whole family. The HBS hosts discuss a real human drama.Note to listeners: if you haven't already, you may want to watch “Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary” (link to complete film on YouTube here) before listening!"Hands on a Hardbody: The Documentary" tells the story of an annual competition held from 1992 to 2005 in Longview, Texas, in which a local Nissan dealership selected 24 contestants by lottery for a chance to win a tantalizing symbol of freedom and mobility in many rural areas: a brand-new hardbody truck. All the contestants had to do to win it was to show up at 5am in the sweltering Texas summer heat, place a hand on the truck, and wait until theirs was the last hand left. They got a 5-minute break every hour and a 15-minute break every six hours, but the rest of the time they couldn't lean, they couldn't sleep, they couldn't use the bathroom, and most importantly they couldn't take their hand off the hardbody. They could only wrestle with the relentless passage of time… and all of the boredom, exhaustion, physical pain, and quite often delirium it brought with it. So they waited. And waited. And waited…sometimes more than 80 straight hours before there was only one hand left. That's more three entire days and nights. As the clock ticks relentlessly on and we learn more about each contestant's hunger for a chance at prosperity, what seemed like an absurd spectacle of willpower and perseverance becomes a deeper exploration of the human condition—the limits of mind and body, amity and enmity, suffering and compassion, ambition and ability— all as these 24 contestants confront the bittersweet realities of the American dream in the hopes of escaping the suffocating shackles of their circumstances. In the words of Benny Perkins, former winner of a hardbody, return contestant in the documentary “Hands on a Hardbody,” and arguably one of the most underrated philosophers of the 20th Century: “It's a real human drama.”Full episode notes available at this link:https://hotelbarpodcast.com/podcast/episode-106-hbs-goes-to-the-movies-hands-on-a-hardbody-the-documentary-1997 -------------------If you enjoy Hotel Bar Sessions podcast, please be sure to subscribe and submit a rating/review!Follow us on Twitter @hotelbarpodcast, on Facebook, and subscribe to our YouTube channel!

PATREON-EXCLUSIVE EPISODE - https://www.patreon.com/posts/71449739 In the mid-'90s, a car dealership in Texas offered contestants a chance to win a free truck if they could perform one feat of physical and mental agility: keep one hand on the truck for longer than anyone else. The documentary HANDS ON A HARDBODY (1997) captures the contest in all its agony. We're joined by John Semley to discuss what - if anything - this highly evocative document has to say about America.

It's a movie you've never heard of told in a way stories are rarely still told today. Everyone has a camera and everyone has a public profile, but instead of sharing unprecedented levels of the human experience, most people perform and conform. Every person is capable of offering us insight, whether intentionally or accidentally. But when our culture seems increasingly contrived and guarded, does it influence us to become just as insincere? ◬ In this episode: ⋗ Word of the podcast: Tenacity ⋗ Art is ruined by rigid, cynical narrative-seeking ⋗ Does each generation get weaker? ⋗ The insight of the average person ⋗ The omen of the Island Boys ⋗ Is our culture afraid of sincerity? ⋗ Technology changes the way we present and understand ourselves ⋗ Why are we losing real-world connection as we gain an unprecedented amount of online connection? ◬ Get every weekly episode and a civilized space to discuss philosophy, society, mythology, and more on the Silver Eye Society Patreon. ◬ Listen to the podcast via: Spotify Amazon Tune-In Podbean Apple
It's another episode of the Unnamed Automotive Podcast, and this time, we're talking cars. Benjamin has a lot to say about the latest two door BMW, the 2022 M240i xDrive. With more power, and a longer wheelbase, this coupe is a departure from what the 2 series used to represent, and hints towards the future that BMW is building for its brand. Is more power ever a bad thing? What does this mean for the future M2? Where are all the useless gimmicks? All that and more are answered. Then Sami brings up some news topics, including Kia's push for EVs which may or may not include some pickup trucks, which has our hosts wondering, are there enough EV pickups? Speaking of which, news was shared about the upcoming Ram EV Pickup, which will use a body on frame design, making it fairly unique in the world of EVs. Then we get a closer look at the upcoming Jeep EV. Benjamin also shares his mild enthusiasm for a recently released Kia musical instrument. Finally, to end the episode, Benjamin describes a '90s phenomenom known as Hands on a Hard Body. A contest that stressed out participants mentally and physically, it left a mark on Benjamin with its sad 2000s coda. Listen to all of this and don't forget to rate, review and subscribe for more great automotive content.

After realizing he “didn't just want to get up there and do a kick ball change, and sing a high C”, but also wanted his art to make change in the world, this Broadway veteran decided social justice would become a theme in his career. Jay Armstrong Johnson is no stranger to the stage, or screen for that matter, having six Broadway productions on his resume, as well as a recurring role on the ABC series Quantico. His Broadway credits include Phantom of the Opera (Raoul), On The Town, Hands on a Hardbody, Catch Me If You Can, and Hair (Broadway debut). Jay originated the role of Banko in Roundabout Theatre Company's world premiere of Scotland, PA, for which he received a 2020 Outer Critics Circle Award Honor. He is the driving force, and a star of, the Hocus Pocus themed concert event “I Put A Spell On You”, which raised over a quarter of a million dollars for Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS last year. Coming up next, Jay will be celebrating his birthday with all who tune in to his live streamed show from 54 Below on September 1st. Jay grew up a “queer kid” in Texas, and when he joined a community theater group at 12 years old, he realized he had found his place and his people. Jay shares his deep love for the movie Hocus Pocus with us, and how it later inspired him to create the now yearly and widely successful “I Put A Spell On You” show/fundraiser. He opens up about how his Broadway debut in Hair was a “life changing experience”, one where they played the part of 60's hippies on stage, and also walked the walk offstage going to rallies and marches for marriage equality as a cast. Jay also speaks candidly about the “reckoning” of the last year within the theater industry, and the need for representation both on and off stage. This week we finally review HANDS ON A HARDBODY: THE DOCUMENTARY (1997) thanks to a tip from Ashley’s brother about streaming options. This surprisingly moving film by S.R. Bindler documents the human drama surrounding an endurance competition to win a Nissan Hardbody pickup where 24 contestants stand with their hands on the truck until only one is left standing. This was Ashley’s introduction to the wonderful world of independent documentaries. Somehow Dave never managed to see it even though it was still playing at the dearly departed Dobie Theater across from UT when he started film school there. Ten down-on-their-luck Texans gather on a car lot to compete for a cherry red Nissan pickup. They must lay their gloved hands upon the truck and, except for scheduled breaks every six hours, never let go. The last person standing wins. That’s the premise behind Hands on a Hardbody, a 2012 musical now in its Bay Area premiere run at Napa’s Lucky Penny Community Arts Center. Based on a 1997 documentary that followed 24 contestants in an actual endurance competition, Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Doug Wright trimmed the number of contestants to ten and Trey Anastasio (Phish) and Amanda Green composed a Tony-nominated score to tell their backstories. For those who don’t think there’s enough here for a full-length musical, Benny Perkins (Brian Watson) makes it clear to the audience that it’s a “Human Kind of Thing”, and then each contestant explains what they’d do “If I Had This Truck”. Benny’s won the contest before but since lost the truck and his wife. Ronald (Michael David Smith) thinks his all-Snickers diet is the ticket to victory (he’s mistaken.) J. D. (Barry Martin) sees the truck as a way to regain his virility. Greg (Ryan Hook) and Kelli (Kirstin Pieschke) meet cute and then make plans to drive away to Hollywood together. Janis (Lucinda Hitchcok Cone) is doing it for her kids. Jesus (Alex Gomez) could use some help putting himself through veterinary school. Chris (Michael Scott Wells) is a military vet who’s looking to make his son proud. Heather (Jenny Angell) may have the inside track, but Norma (Daniela Innocenti Beem) has God on her side. Benny is the ostensible lead, but it’s a true ensemble piece with each character, including the non-contestants involved (spouses, the car dealers, a radio DJ) having their moments. Credit to director Taylor Bartolucci for assembling a talented, diverse cast to explore the themes beneath the surface and to choreographer Staci Arriaga for figuring out how to make the cast move with one hand attached to a truck at all times (well, mostly.) By the way, the truck is on rollers and is frequently spun by the cast, so no one section of the audience spends the bulk of the show staring at the back end of a truck (or cast member.) Musical director Craig Burdette leads a four-piece band in the heavily country and western-influenced score whose musical highlight is the raucous gospel number “Joy of the Lord”. Basically, it’s A Chorus Line with a truck and at two and a half hours it runs a bit long, but by the end you’ll be giving a hand to this Hardbody. ‘Hands on a Hardbody' plays Thursdays through Sundays through June 17 at the Lucky Penny Community Arts Center in Napa. I"m a little obsessed with today's guest, Jay Armstrong Johnson. I loved him in "Hands on a Hardbody" and "On the Town" and I think I've listened to his new album "Jay Armstrong Johnson Live at Feinstein's / 54 Below" like 100 times. It's that good. He made his Broadway debut in 2009 in "Hair" and went on to standby for Aaron Tveit in "Catch Me if You Can" before originating his roles in "Hands on a Hardbody" and "On the Town." This episode has TONS of music from Jay's new album. Enjoy!

This episode is packed with emotion, hilarity, and heart!
