Special Encore Episode: Jesus Christ Superstar & the Rise of The Rock Musical!

BROADWAY NATION

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 12, 2023 32:19

Although nobody knew it at the time, in April of 1968 “The Golden Age of Broadway” came to an abrupt end on the opening night of the “tribal rock musical” HAIR, which took America by storm and created a shocking jump cut into what I call “The Modern Era" of the Broadway Musical. In this episode I share the story of the emergence and rise of the so called “Rock Musical”. To many HAIR, and the "Rock Musical", seemed like a total betrayal of the values, craftsmanship and traditions of Broadway. However, I see it, and the other new forms of musicals that rose to the forefront in The Modern Era, as just part of the inevitable ongoing evolution of a form that had always closely reflected what was going on in American culture. In the immediate wake of HAIR there were many shows that tried to emulate its triumph -- but only three found real success: Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell, and Two Gentlemen of Verona. Later, the success of Godspell would lead directly to PIPPIN, and the success of Superstar led to Webber & Rice's 1979 blockbuster EVITA, and the expansion and of their early musical Joseph And His Technicolor Dreamcoat. The term “Rock Musical” is something of a misnomer. Rock music, in is purest form, actually does not lend itself very well to musical theater storytelling. It's musical, rhythmic, and lyric forms are much too limited and repetitive. The most successful “Rock Musicals” – from HAIR to RENT -- would more actually be called “rock flavored” musicals that employ a variety of rock, pop, R&B, folk, and latin styles mixed with traditional forms of songwriting. Over the coming years both Stephen Schwartz and Andrew Lloyd-Webber would move further and further away from Rock and do what Broadway composers had always done – combine the pop music of their day with an eclectic mix of musicals styles that best suited the story and characters they were dramatizing. Harmony and understanding, sympathy and trust abound in this ninth foray into 1967, covering the legacy and impact of the groundbreaking hippie musical extravaganza, Hair! Sarah & Joe discuss the freewheeling nature of the show's composition, from its initial off-Broadway premiere in '67 to its triumphant run on Broadway and the West End to becoming a worldwide phenomenon. Much attention is paid to creators Gerome Ragni and James Rado, their other projects in subsequent years, the too-late film adaptation by Milos Forman in 1979, the massive controversies surrounding Hair virtually everywhere it played, and how the show influenced and changed musical theater from that point forward.

Fifty Key Stage Musicals: The Podcast

HAIR COMPOSER: Galt MacDermot LYRICIST: Gerome Ragni, James Rado BOOK: Gerome Ragni, James Rado DIRECTOR: Tom O'Horgan CHOREOGRAPHER: Julie Arenal PRINCIPLE CAST: Lynn Kellogg (Sheila), James Rado (Claude), Gerome Ragni (Berger),  OPENING DATE: Apr 29, 1968 CLOSING DATE: Jul 01, 1972 PERFORMANCES: 1,750 SYNOPSIS: Claude, a young American, is called to serve in the United States army to fight the Vietnam War and questions whether he will go and fight for a war he sees as unjust, or flee the country and become a fugitive of the law.  A commentary on American hippie counterculture of the late 1960s, Hair established a new genre of rock musicals and broke ground in its portrayals of sex, sexuality, nudity, and drug use. Several of the songs from the show became chart-topping anthems. James Rado and Jerome Ragni's musical's opening at the Public Theatre allowed its controversial form and content to prove their marketability before a more mainstream Broadway run. Elizabeth Lara Wollman explores how Joseph Papp fostered the show and how his relinquishing of the rights altered his idea about commercial musicals, the staging of Gerald Freeman versus Tom O'Horgan, and why the musical became a red herring in the development of rock musicals. Elizabeth L. Wollman (Ph.D in Ethnomusicology, The Graduate Center, CUNY) is a professor of music at Baruch College, CUNY. Her research and teaching interests include the stage musical, the commercial theater industry, canonicity, historiography, failure, sexuality and gender, and the cultural history of New York City. She has published articles on the relationship between gender stereotypes and rock radio programming, the impact of the economy on the development of the Broadway musical, the critical and commercial reception of rock musicals, and New York's theater scene in the 1960s and 1970s. She is the author of The Theater Will Rock: A History of the Rock Musical, From Hair to Hedwig (University of Michigan Press, 2006), Hard Times: The Adult Musical in 1970s New York City (Oxford University Press, 2012) and A Critical Companion to the American Stage Musical (Bloomsbury/Methuen Drama, 2017). There has been some news regarding the lead actress from the show, which I do address, but the bulk of this episode was recorded before we found out about the allegations. So just be warned the first few minutes I talk about some content that regards possible sexual misconduct and emotional abuse. The musical itself also deals with depression and suicidal ideation, so that should be included in this content warning as well. Thank you for your understanding. Hope you appreciate this episode! Over the last three episodes I charted the rise of the Rock Musical – from HAIR to EVITA, - as well as the very unlikely “Nostalgia Craze” that swept Broadway and America during the 1970’s. 1970s Broadway experienced another blast from the past with the return of the Black Musical. More than a dozen hit black musicals opened during the decade, and three of them won the Tony Award for BEST MUSICAL. About half of these were new, original musical plays – mostly adaptations of popular plays or novels. All of them employed a combination of rhythm & blues, pop, rock, jazz and traditional Broadway style music to help tell their stories.  The other half were musical revues that showcased the classic songs of the great black songwriters of the 1920s, 30s and 40s. These shows represented a significant black wing of the ongoing Nostalgia Craze. Please join me as I explore the musical plays PURLIE, RAISIN, and THE WIZ,; the gospel musicals DON’T BOTHER ME I CAN’T COPE, AND YOUR ARMS TOO SHORT TO BOX WITH GOD.; and the songbook revues BUBBLING BROWN SUGAR, AIN’T MISBEHAVIN’, EUBIE!, SOPHISTICATED LADIES, and BLACK AND BLUE.  Learn more about your ad choices. In the last episode I outlined how a new wave of brash young songwriters swept aside the Golden Age and ushered in Broadway’s Modern Era with shows such as Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar, Godspell and Two Gentleman of Verona.  But surprisingly, in the midst of this ongoing triumph and ascendance of the Rock Musical, the biggest hit of 1971 was a revival of the Silver Age musical comedy, NO, NO, NANETTE. That’s right the Vincent Youmans musical that has introduced the songs “Tea For Two” and “I Want To Be Happy” way back in the Roaring 20s. With a heavily retooled book, sparkling new orchestrations and arrangements, and a snazzy, art deco inspired set and costume design, this reincarnation of No, No, Nanette was billed as “the new 1925 musical”. And it became a smash hit, running for 861 performances, and winning 4 Tony Awards for Choreography, Costume Design, and for two of its stars Helen Gallagher, and another vintage movie star, comedian Patsy Kelly. And, after years of it being almost entirely absent from Broadway -- Nanette brought tap dancing back into fashion in a major way. Most significantly, Nanette fanned a mania for everything and anything that recalled the music, style, and glamour of the 20s, 30s and 40s. The press dubbed this mania “The Nostalgia Craze” as it quickly spread into every aspect of American life. In this episode Albert Evans and I explore the origins of Broadway’s “Nostalgia Craze of the 1970s” -- where it came from, and what artistic, social and cultural forces came together to spark this unlikely phenomenon. We look at its roots in the counterculture youth rebellion of the 1960’s, the rediscovery of classic films from the 1930s and 40s on television, and in the popularization of gay camp culture via the off-off Broadway mega hit DAMES AT SEA. All of this would lead to the triumphant 1971 Broadway revival of NO, NO, NANETTE, which was billed as “the new 1925 musical”. BROADWAY NATION

Later, the success of Godspell would lead directly to PIPPIN, and the success of Superstar led to Webber & Rice’s 1979 blockbuster EVITA, and the expansion and of their early musical Joseph And His Technicolor Dreamcoat. The term “Rock Musical” is something of a misnomer. Rock music, in is purest form, actually does not lend itself very well to musical theater storytelling. It’s musical, rhythmic, and lyric forms are much too limited and repetitive. If you're looking for a fresh new take on a theatrical pop culture classic, the iconic rock & roll musical Grease is making its debut tonight on Purdue Fort Wayne's Williams Theatre stage. It's not only the first time the show has been produced there, it's also the first time that either Craig Humphrey, head of PFW's Design Technology Program or assistant professor of Musical Theater, James Stover have tackled the piece. The plot thickens, you might say, as the two are passing the torch with this theatrical adventure--Craig is preparing to retire from teaching as James is making his directorial debut here. For the back stage perspective of it all, WBOI's Julia Meek sat down with Humprhey and Stover to discuss the play itself as well as the collaboration they enjoyed during its production, and how they view the time they've enjoyed working together in the School's Department of Theater. WBOI Artcentric is brought to you by WBOI's own Julia Meek and Ben Clemmer. Our theme music is “Me voy pal campo” by KelsiCote. Our administrative assistants are Keegan Lee and Brittany Smith. Our production assistants are Monica Blankenship and Mikaela Veltum.

“I think one of the things is not looking at the result. Something that has grown very evident in me, and it came from being a teacher, the work that we always do in my classroom is process work not product work. What we want to do when go into the audition room is we want to show these people that “hey, this what this song does to me, And it's not polished and it's not perfect, but I'm in the moment and I'm in the music.” If we're using musical theater, which I think applies to going in for a job interview, or anything that we're doing to put our work out there, that we come in and say “this is me in the process I'm in with this material. I want you to see how I play with material. I want you to witness me being in my experience.” – Sheri SandersIn 2004, Sheri Sanders created an audition class in NYC called Rock The Audition: A Masterclass in Auditioning for Rock Musicals – and it became a cult hit. Since then, Sheri has become the world's preeminent popular music repertoire coach, a Hal Leonard published author, and has taught at more than 55 musical theatre programs all over the country – instructing performers and their professors and coaches to successfully interpret all styles of popular music.
