Tiokasin Ghosthorse and guest Anne Keala Kelly discuss representation and take the new Disney film "Moana 2" as the jumping off point for their conversation. They talk about the film and what's wrong with it for multiple cultural, spiritual and political reasons, and the way Disney and Hollywood continue to exploit Indigenous peoples and their cultures and profit from it. Keala is a Kānaka Maoli award-winning documentary filmmaker, journalist, podcaster, writer and activist living on Hawai'i Island. Her works address the critical links between cultural, environmental and spiritual survival in the movement for Hawaiian self-determination, and Indigenous peoples' struggles for territorial and political autonomy. She is an outspoken advocate for Indigenous self-representation in mass media. Keala is the author of "Our Rights to Self-Determination: A Hawaiian Manifesto," which was published in 2022. For more information about Keala and her work, visit annekealakelly.com. For background: Keala published this 2016 column, "The Unflattering Cultural Poaching of 'Moana' is a Threat" about the first Moana film and everything she wrote back then still rings true today: https://bit.ly/402Mp0a Production Credits: Tiokasin Ghosthorse (Lakota), Host and Executive Producer Liz Hill (Red Lake Ojibwe), Producer Orlando DuPont, Studio Engineer, Radio Kingston Tiokasin Ghosthorse, Audio Editor Kevin Richardson, Podcast Editor Music Selections: 1. The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Keala Kennelly grew up on Kauai in a geodesic dome built by her parents and began surfing at the age of five, a contemporary of the Irons brothers. Through the 1990s and early aughts, she was consistently ranked top ten on the World Tour and was the first woman to tow Teahupoo. She has since pursued successful careers in both acting and music. Kennelly's life has been also defined by her pushing both physical and social limitations, from her fighting for women's representation in heavy surf to her coming out during a time when that meant detrimental ramifications to her surfing career. In this episode, Kennelly talks with show host Jamie Brisick about being an early advocate for the LGBTQ+ surfing community, what it meant to be one of the few women in the lineup, how the attitudes have changed, losing her sponsors, giving up her spot on tour to work as an actress for David Milch, fighting for equal pay, and her invite to the Eddie, and her DJ career.

Travis Makes Friends is back with another insightful mashup episode, this time diving deep into the topic of hustle culture. Travis brings together perspectives from three influential guests - Ed Mylett, Jefferson Bethke, and Keala Kanae - to uncover the truth about hustling and what it really takes to find meaning and success. In this episode:  Why balance is a fallacy, according to Ed Mylett (@edmylett). He explains that extremity expands capacity - the more you push in one area, the more it expands your ability in another. Rather than balance, he advises to "be where your feet are" and focus completely on the task at hand. Why hustle culture is toxic, according to Jefferson Bethke (@jeffersonbethke). He explains how making work about identity rather than material production is a new phenomenon that correlates with surging anxiety and depression rates. Also, Jefferson views social media as a "family photo album." It's normal to share highlights, but problematic to constantly compare your daily life to others' best moments. The solution is moderation, not manufacturing experiences just for social media. The importance of linking your values to things you don't enjoy, from Keala Kanae (@kealakanae). When you consciously connect daily tasks to your core values, you can learn to love what you do. This mindset shift saved Keala from depression and helped him become a successful entrepreneur. Dive into this thought-provoking episode to gain a nuanced perspective on hustle culture, values-based living, and what it really takes to find meaning and success as an entrepreneur. Keala begins with commentary about this past week's deadly wildfires that completely destroyed the town of Lahaina, Maui, located on the island's west side. Lahaina is the historic seat of the Hawaiian Kingdom. Fires are still burning in other areas of Maui and also on Moku Nui. For the majority of the hour, Keala speaks with Shannon O'Loughlin (Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma), CEO and attorney for the Association on American Indian Affairs, continuing a conversation about repatriation that was begun in March 2023 on this program. Shannon has been practicing law for more than 22 years and is a lecturer at Johns Hopkins University. Pretty sure you're familiar with the common adage that says, “Cash is King.” But how do you actually make cash without some level of marketing in your business? For this guy right here, Keala Kanae, he's spilling the beans as to how he scaled his business from zero to seven figures in just four months. He has generated $20 million in his first year and is now doing about $2 million a month in business through his multiple enterprises. Keala is a growth facilitator, a coach, a blogger, a marketer, and the CEO/Founder of Fullstaq Marketer. When he first started affiliate marketing, he quickly learned that if he could just focus on the advertising and marketing side and figure out how to acquire customers and master the skill set, then he would be helping a lot of businesses that struggle with acquiring customers. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: [01:24] A look into affiliate marketing [03:17] Partnering with businesses that have high-ticket offers [08:06] The ad campaign process [12:56] Scaling through negative acquisition [20:48] The challenges of performing at scale [26:03] Running a business with no capital vs. a business with capital [28:42] The top-down approach [30:37] Proof of past performance vs. the promise of future potential [33:11] Their team's long and arduous hiring process [39:25] A process problem vs. a people problem [43:09] Building a personal brand [48:30] Advertising trends between different platforms Notable quotes from the Episode: "Affiliate marketing is the process of earning commissions by sending some other existing business more customers who purchase their products and services." "The business that's going to win the marketplace is the business that's willing to spend the most to acquire a customer." "If you're looking at good data, you have data that tells you whether or not the process is working, and then whether or not the people inside the process are working – you've got to have both." "Whenever there's a problem in the business, they think that it's a people problem. They think that they have to hire somebody to fix the problem. But more often than not, I find that it's a process problem." On today's podcast I had Keala Kanae on. Keala has a very interesting background. He is an affiliate marketer who has done over $75 million in revenue selling other people's products! Along with that, he's spent over $1 million per month on ads. We talked about how people can utilize ads for their business, so wether you're a real estate investor, an entrepreneur, or in any type of industry, this talk is very insightful! It's insightful especially for a guy like me because he talked about a concept that I haven't even thought about, which is losing money on the ads! We go in depth on what it looks like to actually spend more money than what the customer is paying you to get them, and why that can make you extremely profitable in the long run, as long as you're willing to fulfill on the product. Speaking of fulfillment, we also talked about the risks of scaling too fast. Keala talked about how his business scaled way too fast and he had issues with partnerships, fulfillment, and it was a giant lesson for him as an entrepreneur and as a business owner. Just going through that kind of breakup and all the thoughts of anxiety, depression, and other things that we all struggle with sometimes as entrepreneurs. So, I appreciate him for being vulnerable and sharing a lot of the things he learned along the way. And then in 2020 during the pandemic, I realized that initially I was going to do it solo, and then I said, you know, I'm going to start inviting other people on to my platform because I felt that I wasn't the only one who had an urge to share, that I wasn't the only one who was dealing with grief, mental health, and desires healing. And I thought well let me open it up so that I can have people and it's open to anyone to come on and so it's not limited to just to the Hawaiian Islands but it's open to people from all walks of life to be able to share what they've done to work on their healing or what are the passions they have so that they can be able to embrace life to the fullest.” I'm your host, Keith Weedman. Happy New Year! Big Wave World Champion and former Championship Tour surfer Keala Kennelly talks about her successful career as a surfing pioneer. She dives deep into equality in women's surfing, touching on the importance of women's events at waves of consequence like Pipeline and Teahupo'o, her excitement about the women's CT returning to those places yearly, fighting for and eventually winning equal pay, and how female surfers always rise to the occasion when given the opportunity. She dissects her own origin story and career on tour, from growing up in a surfing family on Kauai and competing with the Irons brothers, to making it onto the tour, always performing better at big waves than smaller beach breaks, and her eventual decision to leave the CT for free surfing. Keala also shares stories about her evolution into a Big Wave champion, her first time surfing Teahupo'o, working in Hollywood on “Blue Crush” and “John In Cincinnati,” her career as a DJ, and how the WSL has begun to embrace LGBT surfers like Tyler Wright. I have learned, as a podcast host, that some episode interviews are question and response, and some conversations are more…intimate. My episode here with Ululani Shiraishi is decidedly the latter. Ululani gave me a gift during this interview, a phrase I will use in my life going forward: Working at the edge of your seat. She comes from a place of part frenzy crazy, and part deliberate intentional. And she is always, always working at the edge of her seat. This conversation touched on what it means to be 100% wife, 100% mother, 100% teacher all at the same time; the purpose of getting a graduate degree; the energy generated when one is forced to “pivot” (to use an overused Covid-19 term); the current revolution in education and the crazy cool things going on at Kamehameha Schools, Maui Campus; the special things that happen when we leave just a little room for margins in our lives, and much more. This will easily go down as one of my favorite interviews in either the 1st or 2nd season of this podcast series. There were times when I forgot I was recording the thing. Ululani is a treasure, a luminous and effervescent being on an epic personal and professional journey. More on Ululani Shiraishi: she is a Kamehameha Schools Maui, middle school language arts teacher who is deep into SEL, Hawaiian culture and trans-disciplinary teaching and learning. She is on the KSBE Maui Middle School Leadership Team and is a close partner with Kui Gapero, one of my early guests on this podcast in Season One. Ululani is a graduate of the Kamehameha Schools' Keala‘ula Innovations Institute, which is a creative learning program where Kamehameha Schools teachers focus on professional development. The program spotlights learning in terms of creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking, skills that are essential for students to succeed today and tomorrow. Ululani also taught in Hawaii's public schools as a National Board Certified Teacher. At Kamehameha Schools Maui, she is an ardent believer in simultaneously teaching the heart and intellect of kids through engaging inquiry-based learning experiences. She is currently working on a graduate degree in student learning and well-being. Hope, self-efficacy, curiosity, and good old fashioned hard work drive her teaching and life. My huge thanks to Evan Reppun Beachy, who directs the Kealaʻula Institute for recommending Ululani. As always, our theme music and post-production editing is provided by Daniel Gilad at DG Sound Creations. To learn more about Daniel check out his Facebook page. In this episode Doug shares his journey from tough childhood to extraordinary middle school teacher at Kamehameha Schools, Kapālama Campus on the island of Oahu in Hawaiʻi. Doug is an “all in” educator – his students go on quests, dig deep into essential questions and participate in epic exhibitions of knowledge. His teacher website is a garden of delights, an Alice in Wonderland of exclamation points and references to projects, challenges and problems his students tackle on a daily basis. Doug is also well versed in current literature authored by the world's leading education lights. Born Douglas AhKop Hiu IV, he is of Hawaiian, Chinese, and Caucasian decent and the second oldest of three siblings. Doug grew up in Maunawili Valley on the wet and windy, Windward Side of Oahu; from 5th to 8th grade he attended six different public schools before landing at Kahuku Intermediate and High Schools, where he wrestled, played football and graduated in 2001. He earned his BA in sociology, and a masters in education from the University of Hawaiʻi at Manoa. Doug has four children with his wife, Tamzen. In addition to teaching, he coaches wrestling and practices in various combat sports. He is a graduate of the Keala'ula Institute for Strategy and Innovation, a tri-campus Kamehameha Schools initiative headed up by Dr. Evan Beachy, who has been featured on this podcast.  The post 13.
