Send us a Text Message.Love the Flaws and Uncertainties of Life. There is theme that quickly emerges from my conversation with Seana Kofoed. If you want something in your life, you can't sit around waiting for someone to recognize your worth. Go out and create it for yourself. And in the pursuit of creating that something that can sometimes be elusive, you can't be afraid of failure. Because the failure is the byproduct of actually doing the work; sometimes you fall. Now you start to understand why a little girl who wasn't always encouraged to be an actor has starred in two Broadway shows alongside Matthew Broderick (Night Must Fall) and Jennifer Jason Leigh (Proof). Been nominated for the prestigious Drama Desk Award for Best Featured Actress in a play, starred in multiple television series - including her latest role as Commander Chase on NCIS Hawaii – and started her own production company Film Camp Productions, that has produced the two feature films 30 Miles From Nowhere and Clearmind. And if a thriving career wasn't enough, Seana says that raising her two kids is the most important role she has. Looking at the broadness of her life today, Seana says “I've reached a point where I've learned to love the flaws and the uncertainties of life. I've been surprised by not needing to cling so tightly to what I thought I wanted for myself and my trajectory.”At the Podium WebsiteAt the Podium on IGPatrick on IGFor more information contact Patrick at patrick@patrickhueyleadership.com

Anika Larsen is having a great time as she takes the challenge of both playing the mom on Broadway's "Almost Famous" and being the mom of two boys offstage. Anika's passion for saving the planet is contagious, and as a member of the Broadway Green Alliance and ambassador for Global Goals for Sustainability, she's making sure she can show and tell her children that she really tried to do what she can to pass on a healthy planet. Growing up with 9 brothers and sisters became a defining characteristic of her life and how it made her the compulsive team player that she is today. Juggling working and being a mom in real life, Anika reflects on the good and the bad things that come along with it, and how she languished during the height of the pandemic as a stay-at-home mom. She opens up about being a better mom because she's working, and the beautiful, symbiotic relationship between her home life and stage life now that she's playing a mom in “Almost Famous”. There was a point early in Anika's career when she didn't work for two years, which she considers an invaluable lesson. All the hardships that have happened to her made her smart not just about money but her future as well, and while for her the worst part of being in the industry is the unpredictability of it, she wouldn't trade it for anything. Anika Larsen is an actress who has performed on the Broadway stage in well-received shows like “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” wherein she won Drama Desk Award's Outstanding Feature Actress in a Musical and received a Tony nomination. She also originated the role of Roberta in the cult Off-Broadway musical, "Zanna, Don't!", for which she received a Lucille Lortel Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Her other stage credits include "Xanadu", "All Shook Up", "Avenue Q", "Chess", and “Rent” where she made her Broadway debut in 2000. She's a member of the Broadway Green Alliance, a passionate ambassador for the Global Goals for Sustainability, a member of Actor's Equity, and serves on the board at the New York City Children's Theater. On TV, you've seen her as “Heather Dalton” in “As the World Turns”, “Livia Frye Cudahay” in “All My Children”, “Ethel Peabody” in “Gotham”, “Susan Thompson” in “Madam Secretary”, and “Alma Spearman” in “Women of the Movement”. She's also appeared in “Criminal Minds”, “Law & Order”, “Nurse Jackie”, “Scandal”, “The Hunt for the Chicago Strangler”, and many more shows. Her essay on Medium.com, entitled, “Why I am Fed Up With Performative Activism From Black and White Theatre Makers”, has become required reading at many universities, including the Yale School of Drama. And if THAT weren't enough, she's knocked it out of the park with her debut feature film, “RED PILL”, a RIVETING political thriller like you've never seen before. This thought-provoking movie about the fractured state of American politics and race relations, has taken international film festivals by storm, winning over TWENTY prestigious awards. The film is now available on iTunes, Amazon Prime and most major streaming platforms. Our guest has also produced a book to accompany the movie, entitled “Red Pill Unmasked”. And there's even a GAME on the movie's website. And on top of ALL THAT, she hosts a highly popular podcast called “You Can't Say That”. There is SIMPLY NOTHING this woman can't do. Today begins a new summer series on Countermelody, celebrating mid-century music-making in New York City between the years 1950 and 1975. We begin with a celebration of Patricia Neway (1919-2012), one of the towering figures of the operatic – and Broadway – stages. Two of her greatest assumptions, in fact, took place on the Broadway stage: Magda Sorel in Gian Carlo Menotti's opera The Consul, which premiered on Broadway in 1950, and the Mother Abbess in Rodgers and Hammerstein's final stage music, The Sound of Music, for which Neway was awarded the 1960 Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Neway combined an unusual voice of startling, sometimes raw, power, with an acting ability rarely seen, especially on the operatic stage. Neway's range easily encompassed contralto roles as well as dramatic soprano parts. This episode features audio excerpts from rare kinescopes of her performances of Poulenc's Dialogues of the Carmelites as Menotti's Maria Golovin, as well as her galvanizing portrayal of Magda Sorel from a 1960 film. She also displays her stunning musical versatility in music by Buxtehude, Barber, Gluck, and the late Carlisle Floyd, as well as settings by Israel Citkowitz, John Gruen, and Thomas de Hartmann of texts by James Joyce from a rare 1959 recording. In addition, I dispel forever the fake news, all pervasive claims to the contrary, that Patricia Neway and someone named Frances Breeze, an exact contemporary of Neway's, are one and the same person. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly support at whatever level you can afford. Bonus episodes available exclusively to Patreon supporters are currently available and further bonus content including interviews and livestreams is planned for the upcoming season.

Ariana DeBose is a triple threat force to be reckoned with. From the moment she arrives on the screen of Steven Spielberg's adaptation of the classic musical West Side Story, it is clear we are in the presence of singular talent that expertly performs any task she is assigned. Since the film's release, she has become an overnight sensation and the front-runner to take the Best Supporting Actress prize at this year's Oscars, but if you have followed her career, it's not surprising that she is in this position. DeBose began her career in 2009 as a contestant on the dancing show So You Think You Can Dance, where she finished in the Top 20. She then landed roles in musical productions of Bring It On, Motown, and Pippin, where she landed the understudy role and eventually, for Pippin, was the star of the show. These projects led her to the part of “the bullet” in the ensemble of the Broadway phenomenon, Hamilton. From her time on Hamilton, she moved on to playing Disco Donna in Summer: The Donna Summer Musical, where she landed a Tony nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. With this, DeBose was able to make the transition to the big screen and small screen, with prominent roles in Ryan Murphy's The Prom and Schmigadoon! from AppleTV+. But it's with West Side Story, and her layered, energetic, passionate interpretation on Anita, a role made famous by the legendary Rita Moreno, that has brought Ariana DeBose the most praise and accolades of her career to this point. And with her Oscar nomination, she is the first Afro-Latinx actor to be nominated for an acting prize, as well as one of the few nominees in the history of the Academy Awards to be openly out as a member of the LGTBQ+ community. This brings enormous pressures and power being in this position, but after speaking with her, it is clear she is taking it all in as gracefully as one can be at this monumental moment in their career. Within the first moments of speaking with her, I marveled at how down to earth and open she is. As the conversation started, DeBose arrived on the zoom humming a song with subtle lyrics about getting set up for our chat. About five minutes in, as she is answering a question, her Airpods went out, and as she responded, she quickly configured her settings, all the while staying focused, smiling the entire time. Midway through, her cat started to crawl right next to her and she grab it and put them on her lap as we finished out our time together. Completely comfortable and authentic, she spoke to me about her love of musicals, the important relationships with her West Side Story co-stars, what she is going to look for in future projects, and so much more. By the end, as we parted and exchanged goodbyes, she struck me by the way she said goodbye, as if it was a friend saying goodbye to someone they know, someone they will see again down the road. In a world that is harsh to navigate through, DeBose shows in this interview, and the variety of others she has done throughout this awards season, that her kindness, relatability, and comfort within who she is is infectious and leaves you with a smile on your face and a warm heart. Good things happen to good people, and Ariana DeBose is beyond good, she is phenomenal. I hope our paths do cross again; till then, here is my full conversation with the recent Oscar nominee.

In our Fox 1937 episode this time around we cover a couple of oddities that nevertheless provide a good snapshot of the studio's latter 30s. Charlie Chan at the Olympics, starring Shakespearean-trained Swedish-American Warner Oland in his final year as Honolulu's Chinese Sherlock Holmes, flaunts racially integrated American Olympic teams at the Summer Olympics in Berlin, while failing completely to acknowledge the distressing existence of Nazism (not to mention the slight problem of a white man portraying the title character). Film credits include Grease, Ordinary People, Bloodhounds of Broadway, Child’s Play, Staying Together, Backfire, I Ought to Be in Pictures, Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael, and the independent film, Bart Got a Room. When Dylan Arnold was growing up on Bainbridge Island he often said he would live at BPA if he could. And he almost did. From the ages of eight to fifteen he enrolled in almost every theatre class, and appeared in numerous main stage productions. His dedication to acting took him to Idyllwild Arts Academy for high school, and then to the University of North Carolina School for the Arts where he earned his BFA in Drama. Dylan is now a working actor in L.A. and is involved in film, television, and occasionally theatre. Some of his film & TV credits include: Laggies; the ABC miniseries, When We Rise; Mudbound; S.W.A.T.; Halloween & Halloween Kills; Nashville; The Purge TV series; The After Series; and Hulu’s Into the Dark. He also appeared on stage in Good Boys at the Pasadena Playhouse. Dylan would like to give a huge thank you to the entire BPA family for providing a safe, loving environment for him to discover his passion. As you might imagine, there are tons of Jim Andersons in the world. For professional purposes, Jim is James E. Anderson III, but he wants you to know, you can call him Jimmah. Jim lives in the Los Angeles area - his hometown - to which he relocated in 2018 to pursue training, inspiration and employment in the world of acting. He has worked in commercials, independent features, shorts and student films and, most recently, was the voice of the Narrator in the BPA production of “B.I. P.I.” In the age of quarantine, theatres are dark, casting offices are closed and Hollywood is moribund. Writing stories, plays and the obligatory LA pursuit, writing a screenplay, along with creating and self- taping character monologues have kept me in the game. I’m most grateful to BPA, Miranda Feldtman and Liz Ellis for bringing me on board for this project. Nikki M. James most famously, originated the role of Nabalungi in the Broadway hit musical, Book of Mormon, for which she won the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. After her award winning performance, Nikki went on to star as Éponine in the 2014 Broadway revival of Les Misérables. James starred on the Fox series Proven Innocent. James received rave reviews for her starring role as Viveca in Kirsten Child’s musical The Bubbly Black Girl Sheds Her Chameleon Skin in Encores! Off-Center production at City Center. The musical review was an ambitious follow up to Nikki’s portrayal of Portia, Brutus’ proud wife, in The Public Theatre’s extremely press worthy and politically prescient version of Julius Caesar at Shakespeare in the Park in 2017. Nikki reprised her role of Viola in the musical version of Twelfth Night this past summer under the direction of Oskar Eustis at the Delacorte Theatre. Recent notable work in television includes a starring role in CBS’ quirky series Braindead and a recurring guest arc on the hit series The Good Wife, CBS’ Bull, Escape From Dannemora on Showtime and reprised her role of Monica from The Good Wife on the CBS All Access series The Good Fight. Her film credits include: Lucky Stiff and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby. She has also performed several sold-out, one-woman cabaret shows at popular New York City venues such as 54 Below and Joe’s Pub. No stranger to Broadway, Nikki has starred in productions of All Shook Up and The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Other memorable theater productions include; Romeo and Juliet, Caesar and Cleopatra alongside Christopher Plummer, The Wiz, Bernarda Alba, House of Flowers and Preludes. She resides in New York City and holds a BFA in Drama from NYU.
On December 22nd, Theatre Raleigh will be bringing Broadway star Ariana DeBose back home to Raleigh, North Carolina to give not one, but two concerts at the Kennedy Theatre located inside Duke Energy Center for the Performing Arts for one night only. She may be currently out in L.A. filming Ryan Murphy's upcoming Netflix movie adaptation of THE PROM, but luckily, I was recently able to get in touch with her by phone for this interview. After having made her breakthrough as a contestant on the sixth season of SO YOU THINK YOU CAN DANCE back in 2009, Ariana DeBose would go on to make her Broadway debut in a stage musical adaptation of BRING IT ON in the summer of 2012. Since then, she has appeared on Broadway in MOTOWN: THE MUSICAL, the most recent revival of PIPPIN, and the original cast of HAMILTON before going on to originate two principal roles: Jane in A BRONX TALE and Disco Donna in SUMMER: THE DONNA SUMMER MUSICAL, the latter of which earned her a 2018 Tony Award nomination for Best Featured Actress in a Musical. Next year, Ariana will be seen on the big screen in two major movie musicals directed by some very high profile filmmakers: not only as Alyssa Greene in Ryan Murphy's THE PROM, but also as Anita in Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY. Rita Moreno is an American treasure. She is the first performer to have won a Oscar, Tony, Grammy and Emmy: an Oscar for West Side Story in 1961; a 1972 Grammy Award for her contribution to "The Electric Company"'s soundtrack album; a Tony Award in 1975 for Best Featured Actress in a Musical for "The Ritz"; and back to back Emmys in 1977 and 78. She was born Rosita Dolores Alverío in Humacao, Puerto Rico, on December 11, 1931 to seamstress Rosa María and farmer Francisco José Alverío. Rosita and her mother moved to New York City in 1937, where she began a professional career making her Broadway debut on November 22, 1945, less than a month before her 14th birthday co-starring with Arthur Keegan and a young Eli Wallach in the play Skydrift at the Belasco Theater. Although she would not appear again on Broadway for almost two decades, Rita Moreno, as she was billed in the play, had arrived professionally. Then, on March 1, 1954, Rita was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. As she remembers, the legendary Hollywood producer and studio head, Daryl Zanuck saw the cover and said, “Get me that girl!” The rest as they say is history and the continuation of a magical career that has spanned more than 7 decades and continues to this day. At age 87, Ms. Moreno still has the joy of life that brought her to the party. On a personal note, several years ago, I had the honor of co-hosting with Ms. Moreno at the White House Hispanic Heritage Awards in Washington DC. Recently, she graciously accepted an invitation from Dr. Robert Vela, President at San Antonio College to speak at Annual SAC Fiesta Brunch held at the Pearl Stables in San Antonio and thanks to Dr. Vela, I had an opportunity to sit down with Rita and catch up! Here is that visit, sprinkled with highlights of her memorable presentation. Find more at: https://SonnyRadio.com/show

During our 10 minutes, we talked about . . . How she chooses material . . . when she can do anything she wants. The craft and importance of playing a diverse set of roles.
