By the time we reach our 40's and 50's, chances are, we've tried quite a few different diets. We came of age during the diet culture of the 80's and 90's, so this certainly isn't breaking news. But what you may not know, is that these top 7 weight loss strategies are actually fat traps in disguise. In this episode of Your Midlife Comeback Story, we're going to answer the question… what exactly are those top 7 weight loss strategies that we all seem to fall back on, and why aren't they working? And today, because I didn't want this information to go in one ear and out the other, you're getting an unexpected bonus. I made this a little more memorable for you by naming these 7 weight loss strategies with some fun 80's nostalgia. I'm going out on a limb and guessing that you've probably tried at least 3 of these 7 strategies. And no judgement here, because I've done all of them! But I'm wondering… are you going to resonate more with The Pac Man, or maybe The Mullet, or maybe you've had a friend convince you to do Hands Across America with her.If you're interested in learning more about the top 7 weight loss strategies that are keeping your weight plateaued, and are maybe even causing you to gain weight, then keep listening, because this episode is for you. At the end, you'll also get 1 1/2 additional weight loss strategies that I recommend, and that actually work for long-term, sustainable results. Together, we will unpack:What exactly are the top 7 weight loss strategies that we all seem to fall back on, and why aren't they working? How our "triggers" determine which type of weight loss program we choose. How truly understanding weight loss will lead you from "I got this" to "I GET this".What are some alternative weight loss methodologies that will produce effective and long lasting results?References:https://www.sciencemediacentre.org/expert-reaction-to-rapid-vs-gradual-weight-loss-and-long-term-weight-management/The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition Review on Weight Loss Supplements: https://academic.oup.com/ajcn/article/87/1/3/4633415The New England Journal of Medicine Study on GLP-1 Drugs: https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa2032183Connect with Holly:▶️ FREE TRAINING - WTH HAPPENED TO MY MIDLIFE HEALTH? - https://academy.pinkfortitude.com/register-for-master-midlife-health▶️ REGISTER FOR THE *FREE* PRIVATE PODCAST SERIES - YOUR COMEBACK EXPERIENCE - podcastholly.com▶️ Follow Holly Bertone on Instagram - @holly.bertone ▶️ More resources for Your Comeback Story - yourcomeback.coach If today's episode resonated with you, be sure to hit the follow button where you are listening and also tap those 5 stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ and leave a great review because it would mean so much to me to hang out with you every week and because it will also help to get this podcast and our wonderful message out to more listeners! On May 25th throughout history, pivotal moments have shaped our world. In 1961, President John F. Kennedy set a bold goal to land a man on the moon by the end of the decade, a dream realized in 1969. Muhammad Ali's first-round knockout of Sonny Liston in 1965 became legendary, amid rumors of a phantom punch. The cinematic universe changed forever in 1977 with the premiere of "Star Wars," and the same day marked the end of "The Brady Bunch," sans Robert Reed. In 1986, Hands Across America united millions in a powerful stand against hunger and homelessness.

It's 1986, and Courtney Moore's summer break is off to a great start. After participating in Hands Across America, she's ready to hit the arcade, read her American Girl catalogue, and make new friends, including a boy named Isaac. But Courtney faces unexpected challenges when she hits the books that fall. When others learn that Isaac is HIV positive, he is forced to leave Courtney's school. For this episode, we brought in an expert to talk about Courtney's ensuing public health campaign and what someone her age would have known about the HIV crisis in the mid-1980s. Our special guest Myrna Moretti, a PhD Candidate at Northwestern University, also gave us great insight into how Courtney consumes technology, '80s arcade culture, and the real queer-led activist movement that fought for a cure for HIV/AIDS. Frank Murphy's friend Kathryn Frady is today's co-host. Kathryn is headed back to Baton Rouge for her duties with Opéra Louisiane. Jody Collins will co-host the next episode of the Frank & Friends Show and Frank will appear as a guest on Jody's Ramblin' Man podcast.  Frank got AirPods for his birthday and is afraid of losing them. One pops out of his ear when he bends over while doing yard work. There is an AirPods case for sale in our merch store.  Frank missed a call from his daughter. He called back at an inopportune time because his two-year-old granddaughter was fussing. When she heard that pop-pa was on the phone, she stopped crying.  Artie Rocket usually visits during June. Next year Frank wants him to visit during August. That way he can be on a swim team in June and July and help Frank harvest figs in August.  Frank is wearing the last of the ten shirts he bought at an estate sale. The shirt belonged to Cecil Edward Mannis, father of Eddie Mannis. Most of the shirts were blue or red. One was yellow. Frank's friend Jeff Detrow made a good joke about one of the red shirts. He said a Bob Evans restaurant was missing its table cloth.  Kathryn asks if Frank ever wears black. He did when they appeared on East Tennessee PBS during pledge breaks in the Brit Floyd: Space & Time - Live in Amsterdam broadcast.  Frank and Kathryn went to a screening of Marble City Opera's production of Tosca at Central Cinema. Kathryn played the title role. Frank and Kathryn introduced each act of the opera. Kathryn took a photo of herself and Frank on the big screen.  Frank gave Kristen and Jeff Detrow a fig plant. They sent him a photo of the plant in their yard. Frank called it his “grand-fig.” Kathryn suggests that Frank set up a stand in his yard to sell fig cuttings and fresh figs.  Frank has been president of two non-profit boards. He recently turned down a request that he volunteer to be on a fund-raising committee. When he had a salaried job, it was easier to donate time to charities. Now that he is in the gig economy, he needs to get paid for his time.  Frank did agree to emcee Marble City Opera's fundraiser for free. He is on the Marble City Opera board. Kathryn jokes she is going to rewrite the by-laws to make Frank a board member for life.  Most of Frank's friends are women. Kathryn was glad that he had some male co-hosts over the past two months including Tim Coleman and Frank Rosamond. Kathryn asks if Frank will have to adjust the camera when Jody Collins is here. Jody's graphic design company is called Feral Giant.  Frank's friend Bean suggested that Frank start a spin-off podcast about figs and Kathryn agrees. You can occasionally buy fresh figs at Publix in Knoxville. Frank says many places in the Hamptons sell fresh figs. Kathryn says Frank's figs are flavorful.  Kathryn likes being able to conduct meetings on Zoom. Frank gets frustrated by people who have too much background noise and those who forget to unmute their microphone on Zoom calls.  Frank and Bean broadcast live from the top floor of the Washington Monument during Hands Across America on May 25, 1986.  Frank ran out of cherry Luden's throat drops. He has some licorice flavored Luden's which could be a bad surprise if he gave one to someone who was coughing in church or at a concert.  This episode is sponsored by The Middleburg Barn at Fox Chase Farm. Show Notes Episode 347: Hold My Hand Across America This week Host Dave Bledsoe reaches out a hand to his fellow man only to have it smacked down by the bartender who refused to serve him another drink until he paid his bartab. (Again.) On the show this week we link up all the ways people in the 1980's tried to help people in need because the government didn't want to anymore. (Same as it ever was.) Along the way we learn what motivated a young Dave only to discover it is the same thing that motivates an old Dave. (Boobs.) Then we dive right into the history of the various celebrity driven charity events from fighting against nuclear power (because coal could NEVER hurt us!) to famine relief in Africa. (Those songs bought an AWFUL lot of guns!) Then we finally get to the point of the show where we talk about that time America thought hunger could be solved if we all just joined a huge daisy chain of people from sea to shining sea. (Spoiler Alert: It couldn't and we didn't.)  Our Sponsor this week is a Big Dumb Idea, when you've got a pressing social problem only government could reasonably solve, try a Big Dumb Idea instead. We open the show with reporting from the Hands Across America line and close with Geargasm who has a plan for YOU! From the world of music, we have members of ZZ Top and Kool & The Gang, rapper Biz Markie, a Rolling Stone, an Everly Brother... and yeah, a Monkee. And on and on it goes... there's the founder of Hands Across America... the voices behind Charlie in the Box and Billina the talking chicken... the writer of "I'm Just a Bill"... the Big Ragoo from Laverne and Shirley... the forgotten older brother from Happy Days... the World Wrestling Federation's Mr. Wonderful... and many more, including a certain beloved goddess from Saturday morning TV. Once again we recommend listening with a beverage close at hand. Kevin is sticking with coffee, while Kornflake has switched to the hard stuff. Because that's what Betty White would have wanted. The Art of Making Things Happen (Bluefishing) Steve Sims

Ken Kragen has achieved things many only dream of: managing world-class musicians, raising millions of dollars to fight hunger internationally and at home. How does he do it? Recently he spoke with Steve Sims on “The Art of Making Things Happen Podcast” about his illustrious career and the importance of giving back and living a balanced life.  In the 1980s Ken Kragen was responsible for gathering the top musicians to raise $53 million for USA for Africa through its superstar-powered “We Are the World” hit single.  Kragen was the personal managers for numerous musicians like, Trisha Yearwood, Travis Tritt, Lionel Richie and Kenny Rogers for many years. His next project raised $34 million by creating a human chain that stretched from New York to Los Angeles, "Hands Across America". In addition to this fundraising success, the effort helped release $800 million of government funding that had been held to feed women, children and infants. Kragen attributes his success to being in the right place at the right time. Now in his 80's, he hasn't slowed down, currently working on 9 projects.  Anyone looking to achieve a more balanced life could take a page or two from Kragen's book, "Life is a Contact Sport". He says his parents are his inspiration. They taught him the importance of pursuing what you're really passionate about, to maximize the likes and minimize the dislikes in life. This balance has enabled him to stay active in consulting, teaching, developing documentaries and working on a project connected to the World's Fair in Dubai in 2020.   To learn more about Ken Kragen and his projects, visit https://www.kenkragen.com/
