Why did Walt Disney have Herb Ryman's E.P.C.O.T.'s concept art altered from the original version? In this episode of Distory, we go back in time to explore the E.P.C.O.T. that never was, Walt Disney's original vision for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow. After exploring the influence of Victor Gruen on Walt's plans, we move through the city step-by-step, finding nooks and crannies of previously unexplored history along the way courtesy of a Distory listener's exclusive interview with Imagineer George McGinnis. Along the way, we find some not-so-magical policies that the average American wouldn't particularly like, a pub that pays homage to a Disney animation hangout, and a lost airport that can still (sort of) be found at Walt Disney World today. Disney has released video of the attraction in a few places. – https://www.micechat.com/262305-breaking-news-splash-mountain-to-become-princess-and-the-frog-themed/ Construction in Critter Country will be expanding soon. Currently, Critter Country is partially closed, with Hungry Bear and the path to Galaxy's Edge still open to guests. These two locations will be closed starting July 8th. – https://www.micechat.com/387975-disneyland-news-bayou-preview-new-gates-debut-and-surprise-summertime-closures/ Guests on the Disneyland Hotel side of Downtown Disney have a new entrance to use. The new security checkpoint is located next to Din Tai Fung on the Pixar Place side of the shopping district. The new entrance has a new set of restrooms just inside security on the backside of Din Tai Fung. A new mural is also present near the restrooms featuring concept art reminiscent of Herb Ryman art from the 50s and 60s. – https://www.micechat.com/387975-disneyland-news-bayou-preview-new-gates-debut-and-surprise-summertime-closures/ An interesting development has happened with the new turnstiles at Disney California Adventure. The two new entry systems that had been installed have been removed. No word on if they will come back in the future, if another system will be tested, or if they gave up on a new system for now. – DISNEYLAND UPDATE: Too Late to Undo, New Gates Debut, Summertime SNAFU (micechat.com) A new pre-show has come to World of Color this week. The new segment, titled “Emotional Rollercoaster,” plays just before World of Color is to promote the upcoming “Inside Out 2” movie, which premieres on June 14th. Club Pixar, which was a dance party in the Hollywood Pictures Backlot, had it's last performance on June 2nd. Disney Legend and Imagineer Herb Ryman is the subject of this week's show. You might remember that I have already done a Word of the Week about him, but these two stories also need to be told! I hope you enjoy this week's Word of the Week – Ryman. Herb Ryman's influence over Disneyland is much deeper than the weekend he spent with Walt at the studio and his original Disneyland sketch. This week I'll tell two stories you may have never heard about the late Disney Legend.

This week, we offer some Mousetalgia Therapy regarding the loss of A Bug's Land, and then we take a look back at the history of Disney California Adventure. Has DCA gone full Meg Ryan? Is basing a land on properties focused on violent activities a good idea? We also discuss the ghosts of DCA; from the Soap Opera Cafe to Sunshine Plaza, we'll take a walk down memory lane and remember the attractions that have come and gone. We'll also discuss the nighttime entertainment from Glowfest to tea parties - and we'll take a look at the continuing evolution of Disneyland's sibling park. Also - Jeff reads yet another article, this one about Herb Ryman and the 49 elephants. Plus - Boxlunch picnic baskets, Disney at Nordstrom, and Tron Lego!
The Disney Family Album was an original documentary series produced by The Disney Channel in the mid 1980’s. Episodes aired from June 1984 until January 1986 with each episode running about 30 minutes. They were produced by Michael Bonifer along with Carden Walker, the son of Card Walker (The third Disney Company leader after Walt and Roy Disney). The series lasted just 20 episodes and was designed to take a look at the artist and performance that shaped Disney Studios and Disney Parks, most of whom worked directly with Walt. The people featured created some of the most iconic Disney characters, movies and attractions ever developed. Narrated by Buddy Ebsen, the series is a true history lesson and provides the perfect time capsule with incredible insight and behind the scenes stories. In the greater scheme of things, the timing of these 20 episodes was perfect; any earlier or later in Disney History, and they may not have happened. Of the 20 episodes produced, 7 showcased one of Walt’s Nine Old Men: Marc Davis, Frank Thomas, Ollie Johnston, Eric Larson, Wolfgang (or Woolie) Rytherman, Milt Kahl and Ward Kimball – all featuring stories directly from them! Only Les Clark and John Lounsbery, who both passed away in the 1970’s, are missing from Walt’s Nine Old Men. Other episodes featured Disney Legends like The Sherman Brothers, Ken Anderson, Annette Funicello, and Jim Macdonald to name just a few. One episode focused on Voice Actors, while another Disneyland Designers and WED Imagineers including interviews with Herb Ryman, Bill Evans, John Hench, and a very young Tony Baxter. Disney Family Album was produced by MICA. The master tapes were given to Disney sometime after the series was cancelled in 1986. Most of the original footage was lost in the Disney tape vault, which was not digitized. While some has been found, most of the original footage and the finished first episode, “Clarence Ducky Nash”, was not found. The remainder of the episodes come from Disney Vault replays captured on VHS in the 1990’s. The Clarence Nash episode was not replayed in the 1990’s. Brian McEntee and John Lasseter are credited with the “Title Design”, which of course, was computer generated; the timing is very interesting. Shortly after the production of the title design in early 1984, John was fired from Disney for promoting computer animation making this title design one of his last Disney credits. Of course, he joined Lucasfilms Computer Graphic Group which was later sold to Steve Jobs and became Pixar in 1986 – we all know the story from there. For this episode of SamsDisneyDiary, I’m highlighting the second episode in the series, Ward Kimball. From a tour of Ward’s full size train in his backyard, stories of vacationing with Walt, reminiscing about the Firehouse 5 Plus 2, or his amazing toy collection, Ward covers his thoughts behind animating the Three Caballeros and the creating of Jiminy Cricket. It’s an amazing 30 minute journey into the mind of a remarkable man. Look for all 19 Episodes of The Disney Family Album at www.SamsDisneyDiary.com and www.youtube.com/samsdisneydiary
2017 marks the 30th Anniversary of the Disney Legends Award, and the opening of the D23 Expo featured the “Legends Ceremony” honoring the 10 newest Disney Legends representing film, movie, television, theater, animation, publishing and voice personalities. For 2017, the inductees included: Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Oprah Winfrey, Stan Lee, and Garry Marshall among others. Personally, I’m partial to the Imagineers, the people behind the Disney Parks…the people that “found a way to get it done”. The final panel of the D23 Expo focused on the Imagineering Legends, and the newest being Wayne Jackson. One of Wayne’s many accomplishments? Moving It’s a Small World from the 1964/65 NY World Fair to Disneyland! It sounds easy enough, but how do you do that? Where do you start? Wayne found a way to make it happen; after all, that’s what Imagineers do…make it happen. The panel was really a history lesson. Hosted by John Stamos, yes the John Stamos, who has the “D” from the Disneyland sign in his back yard, (he might have been on television at some point too J) no doubt he is a Disney Nerd! John was joined by Disney Imagineering Legends Tony Baxter and Marty Sklar. The majority of the panel was a walk down memory lane with Marty and Tony reminiscing about their personal experiences with iconic Imagineering Legends…personal accounts of working with Walt, John Hench, Herb Ryman, Ken Anderson, Mary Blair, X Atencio, the list goes on and included personal stories outside of the parks. It was a fascinating hour of history and storytelling from some of the best storytellers in the business. At the time of this recording, there was no way of knowing that this would be Marty’s Sklar’s last public appearance. Marty has been a Disney Imagineering Ambassador since his retirement from Imagineering in 2009. Marty retired July 17th 2009 after 54 years of service, receiving windows on Disneyland’s Main Street. Marty’s window reads “Main Street College of Arts & Sciences – Martin A. Sklar, Dean”. Of course, July 17th is Disneyland’s Birthday, a fitting day to retire and get a window on Main Street USA. Marty retired on Disneyland’s 54th Birthday with over 54 years with the company, starting as the editor of the Disneyland Newspaper one month before the park opened. Marty is the only Disney employee to personally attend the opening of every Disney Park around the world. Marty, Thank You! Thank you for the countless stories, the kind words you had for me during our brief encounter at D23 2017, and thank you for the autograph inside my copy of “One Little Spark” – I will always remember “Without a Story, You Have Nothing!”
This week, Walt Disney Archives Director Becky Cline talks to Mousetalgia about the upcoming D23 Expo and gives us a sneak preview of the Pirates-themed Walt Disney Archives exhibit, and some behind-the-scenes information about the Archives programming and the Archives stage. Cline also shares some last-minute pro tips for attending the Expo. Then, Jeff takes us along on his trip to Van Eaton Galleries for the "Walt Disney's Disneyland" live auction, and describes the atmosphere and the happenings, and lets us listen along as the brownline presentation map that Walt Disney and Herb Ryman created in a whirlwind weekend is auctioned off for - well, if you haven't already heard, we don't want to ruin the surprise! Jeff also talks about the nature of live auctions, why they are an apples-and-oranges comparison with eBay, and how to prepare if you wish to ever participate in a Disneyana auction. Finally, we welcome Disney Legend Bob Gurr back to the show to talk in detail about the Disney/Ryman presentation map, and he shares some little-known details about the creation of the piece. Also - a Cars 3 review; a John Williams concert review; The Gap's Disney line, and more.
Team Mousetalgia welcomes Mike Van Eaton back to the show to discuss his newest upcoming Disneyland auction featuring a controversial piece: A brownline presentation map of Disneyland hand-inked by Herb Ryman, purported to have been used by Roy Disney to sell the idea of Disneyland to ABC in 1953. While the item made national news with misleading headlines, Mike tells the story in his own words of how he came to discover this incredible piece of Disneyana. Next, we welcome author James Bohn to the show to talk about his new book, "Music in Disney's Animated Features: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs to The Jungle Book." We talk about the amazing appeal of Disney songs, the theory behind the music, and some of the stories Bohn includes in his book. Finally, the Walt Disney Family Museum will open a major exhibition titled "Awaking Beauty: The Art of Eyvind Earle" this week, so we take a look at the life and career of legendary Disney artist Eyvind Earle.

EPCOT International Festival of the Arts Join Howie and Ryan as they discuss EPCOT’s newest festival, The International Festival of the Arts. This inaugural festival is a collaboration with Disney’s Theatrical Productions and will highlight guests favorite music and Broadway talent. There will also be galleries that feature two of Disney’s most prominent artist, Mary Blair and Herb Ryman, as well as current Disney artist. All the arts are covered in this festival, including the culinary arts! Not only can you see and experience all this great art but guests are able to take workshops and learn some of these trades right along side the experts. To honor the arts in this episode, Ryan and Howie share some of their favorite places to find art and art techniques in Walt Disney World and the resorts. We hope that you find joy in these experiences as much as we do. We hope this episode does the A in STEAM, justice and helps shed some light on the Arts in Disney.
The name Herb Ryman might not exactly be a household name, but Walt Disney World and Disneyland would be very different places if it weren't for this Disney Legend's work. This week, I'll take you back to one of the most important weekends ever in the history of the Disney company in Word of the Week – Herb. Famous for his concepts of Sleeping Beauty Castle and Main Street USA in Disneyland and for Cinderella Castle in Walt Disney World, Herb Ryman was as instrumental as any other Disney Imagineer in the design, experience, and feel of the Disney theme parks. Mousetalgia reports on "An Affair of the Art," the Ryman Arts annual fundraiser held at the home of Disney Legend Marty Sklar, which raises funds to help offer art training to high school students. This year, the event was focused on Herb Ryman's history with the circus, and featured a panel discussing the sketches and artwork Ryman created while he traveled with the Ringling Brothers circus while he was away from Disney in 1949-51. We'll discuss the food, atmosphere, and experience of this benefit party hosted up in the hills above LA. Also, Jeff and Kristen visited Chili John's in Burbank, one of Walt Disney's favorite places to eat chili when he could escape the studio for a breather. We review the food, the establishment, and its mysterious ties with last summer's Optimist alternate reality game. Plus - new Haunted Mansion merchandise continues to flow into the park, and Jeff takes a look at the history of Disney's Haunted Mansion-themed collectibles.
The Disney Avenue Podcast is back with a guest I think you may have heard of...Marty Sklar! Dusty Sage, founder and CEO of MiceChat.com, joins host Keith Michael Mahne for another fantastic interview with a man that needs no introduction. Marty talks about joining the company, working and writing for Walt Disney, his old pals John Hench and Herb Ryman, finding out Walt had passed away, whether he will attend the opening of Shanghai Disney and so much more. This is a show you definitely won't want to miss. As former vice chairman and principal creative executive of Walt Disney Imagineering, Marty Sklar stood as a dedicated torchbearer of Walt Disney’s philosophy since first joining the company a month before Disneyland opened in 1955. He helped express and preserve Walt’s spirit of optimism, happiness, and hope for the future through attractions and special exhibitions in Disney theme parks around the world. For more than 50 years, Walt’s inspiration has burned in Marty. He once said, “Working with Walt Disney was the greatest ‘training by fire’ anyone could ever experience. Our training was by Walt, who was always there pitching in with new ideas and improving everyone else’s input. The fire was that we were constantly breaking new ground to create deadline projects never attempted before in this business. That, I’m proud to say, has never stopped in my years at Disney.” During his early years at Disney, Marty not only learned Walt’s philosophy firsthand, but metabolized and translated it into materials he wrote for the master showman which were used in publications, television appearances, and special films. Among them was a 20-minute movie devoted to communicating Walt’s vision of EPCOT, his Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, originally intended to help resolve the urban challenges found in American cities. Marty first became an Imagineering officer in 1974 when appointed vice president, concepts and planning, a role in which he guided creative development of Epcot Center at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
