This week's selection is a stunning cinematic imaginary by Unknown Dino, focussing on the next version of Half Life (soon to be released... er, well, possibly in the next 10 years or so?). There is a lot of craft in this film, called HL: Overworld and made in Blender, which has taken its inspiration both from the HL Reddit community and the HL2 Artbook 'Raising The Bar'. We also talk about the positioning of the new world portrayed as being the next obvious logical step in the story arc for Half Life - HL1 being a portal through which aliens jump to Earth, HL2 being a kind of survival against the odds, Alyx being the prequel, and HL3 being the fight back taken to those hateful Combine... yeah, we wish!1:19 Phil introduces the film and describes his impression of the vision of the HL3 world being articulated9:40 Tracy talks about the inspiration for the film and the role of community but why even bother mentioning generative AI here? 17:55 Damien reflects on why there will never be HL3, which leads us into all sorts of speculative nonsense!Credits -Speakers: Phil Rice, Damien Valentine, Tracy HarwoodProducer: Damien ValentineEditor: Phil RiceMusic: Animo Domini Beats

From stranded in an airport in Mexico for three days to being named the Marketing and Team Manager for Hyperlite, Trever Maur has seen just about everything in wakeboarding. Growing up riding on the west coast, an area notorious for producing stylish and talented wakeboarders, Trever is no exception. From learning grabs with Mike Schwenne to filming Randall Harris for quite possibly the last footage we will see of him, we walk through Trever's extensive journey within the industry. Wallriding a ship, jet skiing, going pro in a unique way, Al Sur, Dog Dayz, Scumline, crashing a hot air baloon, barely missing the cartel while filming in Mexico, and being a husband and dad. Hear all that and much more in Episode 50 of the Grab Matters Podcast, now streaming on all platforms!Follow Trever: https://www.instagram.com/trevermaurSupport the pod! https://www.patreon.com/GrabMattersPodcastThank you to our sponsors:Liquid Force: https://www.liquidforce.com/15% OFF Driftline use "grab15" at checkout: https://tinyurl.com/yvksusymMalibu Rider Experience: https://www.thewwa.com/2024-malibu-boats-rider-experience-series/Grab Matters Merch | https://www.grabmatters.com/shopWebsite | https://www.grabmatters.com/Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/grabmatters/ TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@grabmatterspodcastFacebook | https://www.facebook.com/grabmatters Hunter Thane | https://www.instagram.com/hunterthane/Chapters:0:00-1:20 Intro3:00 Set with La Familia5:30 Best tuck knee?7:00 Wakepants9:00 Favorite grab 10:30 Delta riding 13:00 Famous wallride (YT highlight too)18:30 The helmet toilet21:00 Getting into watersports33:30 LF'n Wheel of Questions38:00 Turning pro 43:00 Getting on Hyperlite47:00 Patreon question51:00 Winching55:40 Driftline Deserves Some Love58:20 Union magazine 1:02:00 Al Sur1:38:15 Malibu Boats Rider Experience 1:39:00 Style1:49:00 Filming movies 1:54:30 What makes a good video?2:05:00 Dog Dayz2:20:00 Scumline 2:30:00 Randall Harris2:37:00 Setup2:48:40 Marketing manager at HL3:12:00 What gets you hyped on wakeboarding?3:20:45 Patreon giveawayLinks:10 years: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yorzIxfcd1k&t=492sScumline: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A2dCiA9a7Fg&t=1682sDogdayz: https://www.amazon.com/Dog-Dayz-Kaesen-Suyderhoud/dp/B01GGS2L10Website: https://www.scumlinewake.com/Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/GrabMattersPodcastWebsite: https://www.grabmatters.com/YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@grabmatters/videosInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/grabmatters/TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@grabmatterspodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/grabmatters
This week's episode reviews a film by Fandom Games called Half Life 3: Honest Game Trailers, released 31 March 2015. The film is a throwback style of satire and even if you've not been following Valve's Half Life developments, you'll enjoy this. For those less in the know, HL3 is a game that never made it beyond the hype, despite its avid fan base waiting patiently (or impatiently) to play it for 20 years! We reflect on Fandom Games origins in Jimmy Wale's Wiki technology. We also discuss our approach to 'healthy criticism' on the podcast.0:14 Intro to the show1:45 What made you like this one? 4:22 The voice of the movie trailer8:04 Half-life 3 assets leaked12:29 The cliffhanger ending 18:54 How to best handle internet criticism? 19:46 Praise what we like and learn from it22:39 Discussing opinions on youtube26:42 The value of professional criticismShow notes and links available at https://completelymachinima.com/2023/02/09/s3-e64-film-review-half-life-3-honest-game-trailers-by-fandom-games-feb-2023/Credits -Speakers: Ricky Grove, Phil Rice, Tracy Harwood, Damien ValentineEditor/Producer: Ricky GroveMusic: Nebular Focus by Dan Henig

Released in 2004, Half-Life 2 ushered PC games into a new generation. It brought with it the highly flexible Source Engine (a game engine so versatile that highly modified versions of it are still used for modern AAA games like Titanfall), and necessitated PC users to install Steam (at the time a highly controversial move that helped launch the platform into ubiquity). The shooter focused on the adventures of scientist-turned-hero Gordan Freeman and his attempts to stay alive in a strange future in which humanity has been conquered by an alien race known as the Combine. Rise and shine, listeners. Rise and... shine... and let us know if you think Half-Life 2 remains one of the best games period well over a decade after release.
