Album of the Week: Roof Beams -- This Life Must Be Long I’ve enjoyed the Maryland-based Roof Beams’ brand of authentic folk rock for some time now. Speaking of time, the band had plenty of time on their hands this spring and summer and recorded their parts for This Life Must Be Long from home. This works well, with the band sticking to a guitar-forward sound that I feel is becoming less popular. But at the end of the day, you need powerful voices and beautiful songwriting at the forefront. Don’t worry -- Roof Beams has that on here, with songs that are heartbreaking, vulnerable, and joyous. This is an album that will make you feel all the feels you may have been numbing yourself from in 2020, and it’s fitting that we get it at the end of a difficult ride. It's a real fresh sounding, confident recording. The presentation is spectacular, with gorgeous cover artwork and stunning green vinyl. A real peculiar shade of green it is too. So, what should you expect from Honeyblood? The LP opens with the driven She's A Nightmare which has smatterings of pizzicato strings which lighten the whole track actually. It then takes quite a turn in sound, and immediately refreshes your senses with The Third Degree. There's a definite Phil Spector sound going on here. Having said that, Honeyblood pull it off convincingly enough and for us it's one of the highlights of the album. Stina Tweedale's vocal talents are really showcased by this track, soaring wildly over hysterical backing yelps and shouts. Still listening? The guitar-driven sound continues throughout the album with the gothic sounding The Tarantella. Although, there are hints of electronica throughout the whole record (You're A Trick and A Kiss From The Devil) but without threatening to shift this into a different genre. Honeyblood are creating music here that puts them out in front of their peers. Finally, your trip through the angry and often belligerent maelstrom brings us into the light with the wistful musing on loneliness in the ultimate track Harmless.

I only ask because the reason this is called the Ribcast is in salute to my cantankerous old father, who managed to fall off a ladder the other day and break a couple of ribs. This, like most rib injuries, has proven to not be all that dangerous, so all we have is a bad tempered old man in lots of pain, unable to laugh, roll over in bed, cough or - heaven forbid - sneeze! I've cracked ribs myself, before, although never broken them, and it really is an incredibly painful injury. Coughing and laughing are everyday occurrences, but holy shit you fucking notice them when this happens to you. Sneezes are terrifying, because holy crapsticks they fucking hurt! Welcome to Toadcast number 215.  This is called the Kingcast because I have been on a bit of run promoting gigs recently, with three in the last eight days or so.  Given almost none of my friends or music associates came to these gigs and that the list of attending guests on the Facebook event pages made for pretty grisly reading, I was grimly expecting the gigs to be absolutely awful - barely attended wastelands of funlessness - but every single one was brilliant.The people who came were almost all people I didn't know, with a few welcome exceptions, and the gigs themselves were absolutely immense fun.  There was probably more dancing this weekend that at anything Toad-related in history.  So today I have been looking through the forthcoming gigs and getting my ticket links live and stuff like that, and realising that we have some absolute stonkers coming up.  So with a bit of luck, and rather depending on whereabouts in the world you're listening from, I might well see you there.Dancing!  At a Toad gig!  I know! 01.
