Even experiences that don't turn out how they want or expect are valuable learning opportunities.  “Yes, you can participate in things that you love and are passionate about. And that doesn't detract from the fact that you can also be preparing to become this adult, the future self that you want to be and that will be happy and fulfilled while you're doing these things.” – Dr. Lorna BryantAbout Dr. Lorna Bryant: Dr. Lorna Bryant is the Head of Career Solutions for Pearson Virtual Schools. Lorna is a dedicated educator who has spent her 25+ year career working to identify and create the best educational and postsecondary options for children regardless of geographic, socio-economic, or other circumstances. Julie Lythcott-Haims visits Google to discuss her book "Your Turn: How to Be an Adult".  In the twentieth century, psychologists came up with five markers of adulthood: finish your education, get a job, leave home, marry, and have children. But early adulthood for members of the Millennial and Gen Z generations looks a lot different. Those old markers are valid choices, but any one person's choices along those lines do not make them more or less an adult. In “Your Turn,” Julie exposes her own veins, dropping any pretense of authority about her subject and instead leads with disarming vulnerability. The result: A remarkable, comprehensive, loving, useful guide to living a more authentic adulthood from a leading voice in parenting. It turns out that being an adult is not about any particular checklist; it is, instead, a process—one you can get progressively better at over time. Once you begin to practice it, being an adult becomes the most complicated yet also the most abundantly rewarding and natural thing. For anyone struggling with #adulting, “Your Turn” shares a path replete with actionable items that leads to joy and fulfillment. Originally published in May of 2021. There was a time when kids looked forward to growing up, becoming an grownup and leaving home. Today, not so much. Many young people dread the whole idea of adulthood. Why? Apparently, “adulting” just isn't appealing because so many young people just aren't prepared to handle it. That's according to Julie Lythcott-Haims, a writer, former college dean, former attorney and author of the book Your Turn to Be an Adult. (https://amzn.to/3q89LOB). Listen as she joins me to explain what has changed and what needs to be done to help young people want to grow up.  Have you ever noticed that traffic sometimes seems to have a mind of its own? It'll slow down in one spot for no apparent reason and then speed up in another spot – again for no apparent reason. And why is it that one lane of traffic moves fast but the one I am in tends to stand still? Besides the obvious accident or construction, what makes traffic flow well some of the time but then get all screwed up and backed up other times? Here to explain some of the science and nuance of traffic flow is Jonas Eliasson an internationally known expert on traffic patterns who is also Director of Transport Accessibility for the Swedish Transport Administration and has an interesting TED Talk on how to solve traffic jams that you can find here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CX_Krxq5eUI&t=360s Almost everyone loves at least one type of music. Do you ever sit and think about how you actually became an adult? Think of all the skills you have from tying your shoelaces to presenting a report at work. How did we learn these skills? … with lots and lots of practice! And for us to practice, our parents or caregivers have to ease the control a little to allow us to make mistakes. Imagine if your parents still followed you around all day waiting to tie your shoelaces or stand up in front of your colleagues to make that presentation themselves, life wouldn't be very fulfilling would it! Special guest: Dr. William Stixrud. Are we raising an anxious generation? Many would agree that we are. The causes of the uptick in anxiety among children has started to be discussed—even within our podcast- we have talked with Jessica Lahey and our obsession with grades and our focus on avoiding failure at all costs. We have talked with Julie Lythcott Haims about the bubble-wrapping of our children that leaves them unprepared for a life that we deliver them to at the age of 18—a life in which they don't have the skills, yes, but also where they don't have the resilience or the confidence to take it on. In The Self-Driven Child, authors William Stixrud and Ned Johnson continue this conversation—focusing specifically on the ways that children today are being denied a sense of controlling their own lives—doing what they find meaningful, and succeeding or failing on their own, and on their own terms. While screen time and technology certainly are part of the problem, the real issues lie with us—the parents and the teachers—who have their hearts in the right place but are nevertheless, taking the opportunities away from children that would allow them to grow stronger, more confident, more autonomous, more competent-- and more themselves.  William R. Stixrud, Ph.D., is a clinical neuropsychologist, frequent lecturer, presenter, author and founder of The Stixrud Group. He is a member of the teaching faculty at Children's National Medical Center and an assistant professor of psychiatry and pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. Additionally, Dr. Stixrud is the author, with Ned Johnson, of the nationally bestselling book, The Self-Driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives. You will also see him featured for his expertise in publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Times of London, The Wall Street Journal, U.S. News and World Report, Time Magazine, Scientific American, Business Week, Barron's, and, New York Magazine. And—fun fact- Dr. Stixrud also happens to be a musician who plays in a band! On this week's episode, Jamie and Guy discuss the basics of codependency. Codependency in relationships refers to a dynamic where one person enables or supports negative behaviors in their partner, sacrificing their own well-being for the sake of the relationship. This can lead to a cycle of dysfunction where both partners become overly reliant on each other, leading to unhealthy codependent behaviors such as neglecting personal responsibilities, making decisions based on the needs of the relationship rather than individual needs, and a lack of personal boundaries. Ultimately, codependency can lead to feelings of resentment, low self-esteem, and a decreased ability to function in healthy relationships. My guest for this episode is the brilliant Julie Lythcott-Haims., the author of the New York Times' bestselling, and in my opinion, majorly game-changing-in-the-parenting-space book, How to Raise an Adult. She wrote it after noticing that prospective college students at Stanford University, where she was dean of admissions, were being over-parented and as a result, were lacking the resources to develop the resilience, resourcefulness, and inner determination necessary for success. In this episode, Julie and I talk about about what it takes for a child to be successful—looking at how we define success along the way—and explore what we as parents can do to help our child develop the agency they need to become self-actualized adults. I loved having this conversation with Julie and am still noodling on the many takeaways and aha moments I experienced. I hope you get a lot out of it. Julie Lythcott-Haims' How to Raise an Adult has been published in over two dozen countries and gave rise to a TED talk that became one of the top TED Talks of 2016 with over 3.5 million views and counting, as well as a forthcoming sequel on how to be an adult, for young adults. Two years later Julie published Real American: A Memoir, a critically-acclaimed and award-winning memoir which examines racism through her experience as a Black and biracial person. Things you'll learn from this episodeWhat is at the root of fear-based parentingWhy Julie says most parents are raising kids from a place of love, ego, and fearChallenges and hardships every child should face in order to be ready to be an adultHow we do our children a disservice when we “become” their default executive functioningHow we can (and need to) redefine what success looks likeThe connection between successful adults and a child doing chores (and how to get started if you're not doing it now)Why happiness in our kids stems from loveThe benefits of hands-on work for kids developing a sense of agencyHow to help our kids bolster their self-advocacy skills Resources mentioned for helping differently wired teens launchJulie Lythcott Haims' websiteHow to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success Real American: A Memoir Julie's TED Talk: How to Raise Successful KidsJulie's TEDxGunnHighSchool Talk: Throw Out the Checklisted ChildhoodJulie's TEDxStanford Talk: Be Your Authentic SelfHow to Be An Adult Support the showConnect with Tilt Parenting Visit Tilt Parenting Take the free 7-Day Challenge Read a chapter of Differently Wired Follow Tilt on Twitter & Instagram

Rosy had a packed schedule of lunches, meet-ups and activities - and she was only three.  Mom Michaeleen Doucleff felt she couldn't waste a second of her daughter's time. Rosy needed to be constantly lectured and stimulated if she was going to reach the Ivy League.  This style of parenting was exhausting both mother and daughter, until Michaeleen found that not everyone approaches child-rearing in this way. She tells Dr Laurie Santos how she forged a happier and more relaxed relationship with Rosy - that benefited them both.   Formed Stanford dean Julie Lythcott-Haims explores how "overparenting" has taken hold in recent decades and why it needs to be challenged.    Further reading: Michaeleen Doucleff - Hunt, Gather, Parent: What Ancient Cultures Can Teach Us About the Lost Art of Raising Happy Helpful Humans.   Malcolm Harris - Kids These Days: Human Capital and the Making of Millennials  Julie Lythcott-Haims - How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success. Julie Lythcott-Haims is the author of How to Raise an Adult and Your Turn: How to Be an Adult and is as honest as they come. This is one to play on repeat. Every Friday for the next 3 weeks, Kelly takes a small but real parenting challenge to her friend Julie Lythcott-Haims, the author of some very good books. This week we're talking about how to decide when to intervene and when to let the shit hit the fan when our kids are traveling. They missed the train. They lost their luggage. The Uber didn't show. By loading kids with high expectations and micromanaging their lives at every turn, parents aren't actually helping. At least, that's how Julie Lythcott-Haims sees it. With passion and wry humor, the former Dean of Freshmen at Stanford makes the case for parents to stop defining their children's success via grades and test scores. Instead, she says, they should focus on providing the oldest idea of all: unconditional love. After the talk, stick around for a discussion on how you can be a grown-up, too, as Elise and Julie discuss her new book, "Your Turn: How to Be an Adult." This episode is part of the TED Talks Daily summer book club, a series featuring talks and interviews to inspire your next great read. And if you'd like to learn more from Julie, you can enroll in her new TED Course, which builds off the ideas from her book. Whether you're just launching your adult life or finally giving yourself permission to question what adulthood even is, you'll learn practical strategies to build a future that fits you.
