The following sermon excerpt entitled “The Book of James Part 1: Patience” was preached on Sunday evening by Pastor Mike Ray at Hopewell Baptist Churchon Sunday evening, 8/8/2021. If you have your Bibles, let's open them please to the book of James and chapter 1. And we're going to look at a little background to this book, and then we'll try to teach and preach a little of the first section here. I'm going to read the first twelve verses this is all we're going to deal with tonight. Notice how he starts: James 1:1–12 “James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ, to the twelve tribes which are scattered abroad, greeting. 2 My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; 3 Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience. 4 But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing. 5 If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. 6 But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. 7 For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord. 8 A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.” Skip down to verse 12: “Blessed [or happy] is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.” We'll give you some background, then we'll get into the message. Let's pray. Father, bless the reading of Thy Word. Thank You for including this in the Bible. Help us to see how we are to use it even right now in our everyday life. In Jesus' name, we ask, Amen. The theme of the book of Hebrews — the book before this — is faith in the Christian life. The theme of the book of James is works in the Christian life. One person argues, “But aren't we just saved by faith?” Oh yes. “Well, what about works? Faith without works is dead (James 2:17).” Well, here's how it works. Because of His finished work, we don't have to work our way to Heaven. It's all by faith, but real faith works. So, if someone really gets the kind of faith God wants us to have and we've trusted Him as our Savior, it will make us want to work. We do not work to earn Heaven; We work because we're on our way to Heaven. And that's how it is. It's like someone asking, “Are you ironing all your husband's shirts because you have to do that?” The wife says, “No, I get to do that. I do it because I love him, not because I have to.” And so, we don't have to serve the Lord. We get to. Who is this guy James? There's a couple of studies. One person thinks it was the cousin of Jesus. Many scholars believe he was actually His half-brother, one of the children born to Joseph and Mary after the virgin birth. There're several arguments about that, but I believe this James was a very mature Christian. We see him mentioned in the Book of Acts. They had a council. Paul and Barnabas came, and they preached the Gospel to the Gentiles — the non-Jews, and the Jewish Christians were upset. So, they had a meeting. Guess who was in charge? James. James was called to the meeting to oversee it and give his opinion. So, he was a very respected man, a very respected Apostle. He's also one of the three that when Paul got saved, Paul said in Galatians 2:9, “And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars…” in the church. So, the new convert, Paul, said that whoever this James is, he's carrying a load, and he is respected. And then we see in Acts 15, 17, and I think 21 several times there's an assembly, and James is leading the talk. So, he was very well respected by people like Paul and Barnabas. They looked up to him. The early church leaders — they looked up to him. You would call him a mature Christian. They cared about what he said. James, the author of this book. He's the one in 1 Corinthians 15, the “resurrection chapter,” where it says after Jesus rose from the dead, He appeared to the disciples, to Peter, and 500 others. It says He also appeared to James (1 Cor. 15:7). He singled out James. Isn't that amazing? If James really was the half-brother of Jesus, then Jesus was a lot older than him because He was the firstborn. Maybe Jesus was already out of the house by the time James was a teenager. We don't know. But I know how hard it is to recognize greatness in your own family. You ever notice the plumber that fixes the neighbors leaky faucet is the hero. If he fixes his own faucet, the family says it's about time! And so, Jesus is doing these miracles. “Oh yeah right. We never saw him do a miracle in our house.” Paul says, “By the way, James saw Jesus resurrected from the dead.” Maybe that was the clincher for James. “I heard all these miracles You supposedly did, but now, because I've seen You rise from the dead, I'm in.” God uses James to write this great, great book. Someone would call it the proverbs of the New Testament. It includes the marks of a mature Christian, that's what this whole book is about. Very practical. Almost every chapter deals with a different subject. How important was this to James? In AD 62, James was killed for his faith. They called him “camel knees.” They had a legend that he prayed so long and so hard on his knees that his knees were swollen, and they look more like camel's knees than human knees. He's the only Apostle we know that stayed in Jerusalem. The others scattered because of persecution and mission work. James stayed with that early church. It is said by several different historians that James was called up to the pinnacle of the temple, the place where they tried to push Jesus down and kill Him. They told James to stand up there and tell the crowd, “Tell us Who you believe Jesus is.” And he said, “Jesus is the Son of God. He sits at the Father's right hand. He's the Savior of the world.” At that time, they pushed him off the pinnacle to kill him. He landed but did not die. They say he knelt and began praying for his enemies. At that time, they began stoning him with stones. Finally, a man with a club took the club and beat him to death with it. That's the man that we're reading of right now. So, did he believe what he wrote? He must have. He died for his Savior. This was real to him. It wasn't just words. Pastor, why is it so important to be a mature Christian? Well, let's think just a moment of the difference between a baby and a mature person. All right, let me say it's going to be hard for me to remember. It's been years since we had a little baby. But I know this: babies cry a lot. Baby Christians sometimes cry. A lot of babies are selfish. If you say “Not mine,” put him in the church nursery, and give him a toy. Then put another child in there. If he puts his toy down and the other kid starts playing with it, he comes all the way back and says, “Mine!” And besides “Jesus” and “Bible” and “tithing,” usually the first word a child learns is “mine” because it just comes naturally. For the immature person, it's all about them. “Mine.” For the rest of the message, be sure to watch the video above or visit our church website. This message was given on May 12th, 2021 during our Wednesday Night Student Service. This is the first of several messages from the book of James and I am excited to start this series. In this introduction we discuss when the book of James was written, who the author is, why it was written, and why we are going to study this book. The overall theme for the series is "Faith produces Actions", and the point of this message is, "If James was able to surrender his life to his brother, what is keeping you from fully surrendering to Jesus Christ?" I pray this is a blessing to you, as well as the remainder of this series. Please consider helping this podcast by liking, subscribing, and sharing, in order to help us spread the Gospel and grow our audience. Presentations With James Ontra Presentation management with Shufflrr is the next evolution of new PowerPoint presentations. It works from all types of files including video, MS Office files, PDFs, images and of course, PowerPoint. All your content is formatted to present. Then you can simply drag and drop and reuse it into a new presentation. Everyone knows the stress of having a presentation coming up and constantly going back and fourth. Opening one, closing another, copying and pasting. Shufflrr provides an online library where you can upload all your PowerPoints and then pick and choose or mix and match your slides. You can ever recreate them in a minute or two. Shufflrr saves an estimated 5 hours off the time it takes to make presentations. Shufflrr as a Product James created Shufflrr as content management. He's not recreating Power Point or making a new tool for that. Instead, he allows the majority of the existing tools to be used as a slide library for presentations. If James was to break it down simply, its basically content management where every file is formatted to present. So when you upload a file, no matter if it's a PDF, a word, video, Shufflrr brings it all together. Your Presentations will have never looked so good. A few well known companies that use Shufflrr are: http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/Compared-to-Presi.mp4 Where did the idea come from? A presentation is about communication. Not just technology. It's about a communications medium more importantly. As you know, there are many communication mediums. Radio, Tv, Internet, Newspapers. Presentations is the only medium that James noticed a gap in the market. Throughout history, presentations are probably more important than the others combined. Cave people drew on walls, that was a presentation. Just about every religion has put stained glass in their place of worship, that's a presentation. That's a slide because before technology, they used the sun to present their message. As time goes on we still use presentations. Luckily James has created Shufflrr so that presentations can be even more simple. One big key feature of Shufflrr is a brand change or a logo change. If your company changes brand or logo, Shufflrr makes it easy for you to change it on your slides. Usually, you would have to go one by one changing and updating everything which is extremely time consuming. On Shufflrr you have a published live library that's always up to date. If you spell something wrong, it knows. Shufflrr is the managed medium for presentations! http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/slides.mp4 What do the clients say about Shufflrr James says that the clients really like how it centralises all of their marketing material and it's easier to find the slides and re use. With all files being formatted to present, it means they're visualised. So, when you upload a Powerpoint, you see all the images of the slides so it's easy to find the right one. This means you won't waste time opening all your presentations looking for a certain slide. It's really easy to use. They also provide an in depth search on all the slides in your library. If you wanted a slide that had a certain topic mentioned, you can search for the word, the date, slide title. Everything is easy to access. http://thenext100days.org/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/clients.mp4 f you want to find out more about Shufflrr and are interested in what it can offer, download it today via the site here. This is the second part of the incredible interview with James Porritt. Following on from the challenges he met early in life James discusses why failure is a vital part of the journey to success and why it's about intention, integrity, and understanding your values system. He shares why conflicted beliefs and unresolved issues cause toxicity and lead to individuals being unproductive entities in the world and why successful people have clarity about who they are, where they are going and why. Today, Host Celeste Rains-Turk sits down with members of Team Atlas, including James Ayotte, Angeline Jeanson, and Jennifer Dorie. James started coaching in 2016 and has made 21 IFBB pros in the past 2 years. He currently has 2 of the Top 5 bikini Olympians & had 4 bikini Olympians in 2020. Angeline is the head posing coach and builds their athletes' complete look. She is an IFBB bikini pro and a mechanical engineer. Jennifer has a degree in Kinesiology, and placed 2nd at the prestigious 2020 Olympia. The conversation begins with James discussing the detailed philosophy of Team Atlas and what sets them apart. James says that each detail is cared for, from bracelets to suit color. The most important thing is the quality of the athletes produced. Each athlete gets individual service, no one is just a number. Celeste asks James to discuss how they manage having so many athletes. Many tasks are delegated to Jen and Angeline, such as administrative tasks, as well as getting multiple points of view from Jen and Angeline. James credits organization for their success. They never procrastinate. Jen says they all thrive off of being productive and enjoying what they do. Angeline talks about the most important things the athletes need to focus on in each posing session. She coaches technique first then works on the details. She selects every detail about their look, including suit connectors, cut and color. James expands on suit selection and its importance and how it’s so difficult to get the perfect cut and color. Regarding what sets apart a good athlete from a champion athlete, James starts with a bad athlete as someone who doesn’t have great genetics and doesn’t follow the plan. A good athlete begins with someone who follows protocol and makes corrections and listens to feedback. A great athlete is someone who cares deeply about their progress. Jen agrees that being coachable is important. The athlete has to take ego out of the process. James says the best athlete can put their egos aside. Angelina says she agrees with the ego element. She wants each athlete to look their best on stage and sometimes sees athletes unwilling to listen to her advice and they get limited by their egos. James says he, Jen, and Angelina are all very different and all the same. They have different approaches but are all detailed and organized. James talks about the fine balance between pushing an athlete and prep while keeping them as healthy as possible. He admits that prepping is not the healthiest thing. Bodybuilding is an extreme sport and requires an athlete to experience hunger. He would never do anything extreme to get an athlete on stage. He would say no and recommend a later show. He hates short prep because it doesn’t allow for time to practice posing, also. Jen says sometimes clients have unrealistic expectations and she has to be honest with the athlete that they will not be healthy and show ready. Extreme preps also make the rebound much harder. Celeste asks James for his thoughts on the claims that politics play a role in judging outcomes. He and Jen both say it’s ridiculous and a cop-out. There are no free wins, they are all earned in the IFBB. The judges want the best athlete to win on show day. There is a panel of judges as an insurance to keep fair judging. James brings up the point that Instagram photos look different than stage comparison photos, which can show more detail. Angelina says that the overall look matters in judging and can take away from a great physique. Fifty percent of the battle is your presentation and posing. If you’re going to make a choice, like an unusual hair cut or suit color, everything else has to be on point. Celeste asks Angeline what they would do if they had an athlete whose physique is on point but their posing is lacking. Would they still put them on stage? Angeline is honest with the athlete how their posing will hinder them. She says it’s on them if they decide to ignore their posing practice and still get on stage. Celeste asks James what he would want someone to know before they commit to competing. James says they are very passionate about their jobs and wants their athletes to have the best experience. They aren’t driven by the money, they have passion for their athletes. Jen says if you aren’t willing to give 100%, then Team Atlas isn’t for you. They expect a lot and have high standards. They have never declined an athlete because of genetics, only because of work ethic and mindset. Next, the team discusses how they would handle an athlete who doesn’t feel ready but is physically ready. They would encourage them to stop looking in the mirror! Send check-ins and listen to the coaches. If James isn’t worried, the athlete shouldn’t be worried. James likes to have athletes ready ahead of time so they can cruise into the show and have a more refreshed body. If an athlete isn’t going to be ready but still wants to compete at a specific show, she asks what their goals are for the show. If it’s just a matter of having fun and bringing their best, then she thinks it’s fine they still choose that show. They would never tell an athlete they are capable of something they aren’t. They want their athletes to have realistic goals. Celeste asks their approach to an athlete that has a bad post-show rebound. James explains how the metabolism is affected at the end of prep and how a reverse is necessary to bring it back to a higher rate. He says reverse is harder than prep because the show is over but they still need to stay on track. For the last hypothetical question, Celeste asks if an athlete that is one year into competing and wants to turn pro, why would they hire Team Atlas? James says he would actually encourage the athlete to stick with their current coach if they are doing well. Jen says if this happens, usually there is an issue. If you’re happy where you are, then don’t shop around. But if you have to chase your coach for check ins, then you should inquire about a new coach. Celeste begins the rapid fire questions with seven questions and each coach gives short answers. To see all questions asked in the coach series you can visit the main blog breaking it down After finishing the rapid fire questions, Celeste asks where the egg term came from. James says it was something silly that came from another client referring to himself as an egg when he had to shave his head and beard for a show. Celeste wraps up by thanking Team Atlas for joining her on the podcast. ...And we’re back! In this episode, James and I review the rest of our top lessons from 2020. While this past year had its fair share of ups and downs, we cannot deny the endless opportunities to learn and the immense growth and personal development that took place. We’ve spent a lot of time discussing how changes and challenges help make us stronger and more resilient. They open important doors in the realm of personal and professional development. It’s what you do in the face of change and challenge that really determines the trajectory of the outcome. While we’re excited to be back and share our thoughts and lessons from this year, we encourage you to think about the lessons you’ve learned. To consider how you’ve grown. Whether some of your biggest lessons are the same as ours or not, we hope that in sharing these, you can head into the new year with actionable steps that will prepare you to step into your dreams in 2021. So, as you listen, consider what you can take away from our lessons and how they can inspire you to take action in your own life. Because that’s what it’s all about, right? Taking action? If James and I went through this whole year, especially the challenges, and chose not to do anything differently, chose not to make any changes, chose not to face the realizations or have honest conversations with ourselves and others, our business wouldn’t be thriving in the way it is today. We wouldn’t be fulfilled in the ways we are today. So, listen as we not only share more lessons from 2020 but how we took actions (or plan to) and made changes for the better. We encourage you to do the same because life is all about learning and growing. 2020 was a great reminder that, while we can’t control what life will throw at us, we can control how we respond to it. This two-part series is more than just the lessons we learned from 2020, it’s also a celebration. We celebrate each other’s growth. We’re proud of the growth of the business and the IHML Community. We want to celebrate yours too. We believe that no matter what 2020 looked like for you, you can reach your goals faster. You can have more joy in your life, improve your health, make more money-- whatever it is you desire. It starts by taking action. So tag us on Instagram @iheartmylife or email us at info@Iheartmylife.com and tell us how you are going to take action in the new year. If you don’t know where to start, we’ve got your back. From a child’s point of view, especially back in the 50s when racism was at its peak, there was no invisible division between the white and the black. Mary, as a child, never saw any difference between the two and treated them equally. She loved her helpers, which were people of color, and was even able to create an impact in Mary’s life as a child. “All these people helped to make our lives easier, and they also helped to shape my life in wonderful ways. I'll always be grateful to them.” - Mary Sue Rabe Racism was not a part of Mary’s vocabulary ever since she was a kid and still does not understand the point of bullying people of color. If James needed Bob, I was glad to share it with him. But I was grateful that he made change, and I still had some money. $5 in the mid-50s would pay for lots of 25-cent movies.” - Mary Sue Rabe “He did not react to me. He just went to work. If it had been one of my relatives, I would have been in big trouble, but James did not say a word. He just did his job. It's the Week In IndyCar guest show with Andretti Autosport driver, NBC Sports reporter, and co-host of Off Track with Hinch & Rossi's James Hinchcliffe who joins in after the doubleheader at World wide Technology Raceway to dive into a bunch of questions submitted via social media. A sampling of the items posed this week: "What were your first thoughts when the producer told you to go interview Alexander Rossi after the debacle of the start in the first race?" "James, any hope of seeing you back in a car in 2020? Andretti and Genesys have to be happy with you!" "Hinch, your Indy 500 mask was awesome! Have you worn in it in public? I think you should get similar mask of other drivers and wear them like a hybrid Lee Corso/Leatherface while pit reporting. What says you?" "I know James is a big fan of Jacques Villenueve, who used his handsome winnings from auto racing to have a solo music career. If James could karaoke with Mr. Villenueve, what are some songs on the playlist?" "James- the last few years you've had a couple major gut punches. During both of them you handled yourself with such grace and humility. Can you share who and or what shaped your psychology and your scope on life?" Episode 6 of the Thirty Years War, King of the Islands, is out NOW!Traditional narratives of the Thirty Years War frequently gloss over the English/Scottish or British contribution, and in this episode, we do our best to rectify that error! We start with a scene of peacemaking not dissimilar to that visited in our previous episode, with the added twist that James I and VI had ended a twenty-year war instigated by his famous predecessor. The Anglo-Spanish war was at an end, with little good gains to show for it and all that had been spent, but there was still work for King James to do. Ireland required planting, money needed borrowing, ships needed sailing, and foreign diplomats needed talking to.If James was to bring Britain out of its Spanish funk and into the continental system, arrangements with old foes like France would have to be reached, and the relationship with the Dutch properly formalised. In the background of course, were the residual impacts of twenty years of war – a deep-seated suspicion among the British populace of everything Spanish or Catholic. Such trends would have to be combated, and time would tell whether James was equal to the task.***********DON'T FORGET TO FOLLOW THESE LINKS!**1) To support the podcast financially in return for some extra audio content, check out Patreon!2) To find a community of history friends, look at our Facebook page and group!3) To keep up to date with us, follow us on Twitter!4) For everything else, visit our website, where you'll find the shop, archive, and much more!5) To purchase merchandise of all sorts, including mugs, books and clothing, check out our Merchants' Quarter! 01:26 - We preview the tax topics on the agenda for our guest: Jude Heath CPA of the Total Wealth Authority. How to avoid an audit, the UK is losing billionaires, Sweden is trying to pass a big tax cut, and the State of New York is auditing all wealthy people who move to Florida. Gregory also talks about tax incentives vs rax credits. 13:09 - You may want to be at Gregory's next Wine, Wisdom, and Food experience at Ruth's Chris on March 19th. If you've been piling up assets, and want to know how to get as much out of your investments as possible, learn how Gregory could help you get there. Are you working with the right person to take you into the next phase? 25:37 - Sometimes, delaying Social Security to get the max benefit isn't the best plan. Gregory details a retiring couple's situation, and how delaying Social Security to age 70 isn't supported by the math. 32:59 - Caller of the Week: Cody from Livingston Parish asks Gregory if his military retirement package will have any negative affect on his Social Security retirement benefits. Cody may be in the clear, but his mom may be hit with the Windfall Elimination Provision. 37:21 - Gregory elaborates on the discovery processes he uses to learn about his clients, and topics he prefers to cover in a first meeting: income planning, investment planning, tax planning, healthcare, and legacy planning. 44:03 - Jan in Marrero asks Gregory if the retirement pension check she receives from her deceased ex-spouse's railroad pension, will her Social Security retirement benefit be affected? 46:03 - Cindy in Gulfport asks Gregory what will happen if she delays turning on her Social Security survivor's benefits for a year. 51:57 - David in Hammond wants to know if he can roll his wife's pension buyout lump sum into an IRA or something to manage the tax hit. Gregory and Jude see this often, and help David understand what the process will be like. 57:32 - The State of New York has a task force that audits high-income earners who leave the state to make sure they really ARE moving their primary residence elsewhere. 1:05:15 - Gregory and Jude discuss the consequences the UK is facing since they passed massive taxes on their ultra-wealthy. About a third of the UK's billionaires have left the country. If James were to become ultra-wealthy, where should he move? 1:14:05 - Are you a Independent Contractor or an employee? We look at how the IRS defines the difference between a company's employee that gets a W2, and a contractor who gets a 1099. 1:26:24 - Financial News: The unemployment rate ticked down to 3.8% last month, while wage growth shot up 3%. Meanwhile in Europe, their economies are stalled, and they are ramping up some stimilus packages. When Hannity and Elizabeth Warren agree to break up the big tech companies, you know it's a bad idea. 1:38:34 - James checks the definition of Retirement on Wikipedia, and Gregory picks it apart. 1:48:57 - Fred in New Orleans has a financial guy that steers him away from annuities. Gregory points out that many brokers can't sell fixed annuities, and Fred may be missing out on getting investments on a less-risky path. 1:57:03 - Freddie in Metairie has a newborn baby, and wants Gregory's thoughts on saving for college with a 529 Plan. Gregory explains the basics on a 529, but also shares some strong reasons why using a Roth account for higher education could be a better deal. http://www.WinningAtLife.com
James, the brother of Jesus, confronts us with strong words designed to call us to live out a bold and active faith in Christ. In this sermon, Pastor Seth Winterhalter launches a new series on the book of James. Here we learn that James was not only the brother of Jesus, but was also an apostle, one of the "pillars" of the early church, and the lead pastor of the church in Jerusalem. However, rather than identify with these titles, James instead understands his true identity and calls himself servant of God. If James, the lead pastor of the most significant church of his time and the brother to Jesus Christ, the Savior and the Lord, calls himself a servant, we should too. And we should not only call ourselves "servant," we should actually act like one everyday, in every area and aspect of life.

In recent podcasts, I've talked a lot lately about alcohol, and what it does to the body, both and . My friend , who wrote the article below and is the host of the , has a very interesting take on alcohol. So in today's podcast, you're going to learn how quitting alcohol helped James lose 30 pounds of fat, make more money, attract better friends and lovers, and got him a job hosting SportsCenter on ESPN - and get a formula for reducing or quitting alcohol. You'll learn: -Why James quit alcohol... -What happens to your body when you stop drinking, physically and mentally... -The biggest challenges that happen when you stop or reduce drinking... -What to do when you’re at a party or bar if you're not going to order a drink... -If James turned to any other vices as a replacement... -Why James doesn't just use a “one glass of wine a day” approach... -And much more! ----------------------------------- "I am four years alcohol-free today. What started as a 30-day challenge, turned into a four-year lifestyle change. Friends often ask me about this so I figure I’ll quickly share my story, assuming others may be interested. I was never a big drinker. I’d enjoy a few quiet beers during the week. Most weekends I’d go a little harder and get a good “buzz”. On a handful of occasions over many years, I would say I got “drunk”. It was all good fun. There was no drinking to excess. I never had a drinking problem. But I awoke with a shocking hangover one morning four years ago at the South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas after a particularly fun night. I walked into an International House of Pancakes for a hangover breakfast. The IHOP menus have photos of the food you can choose – big, bright, bold colors. The sight of those scrambled eggs, bacon and pancakes on the menu and big, fat, overweight people sitting at tables next to me made me ill. I decided then and there to see if I could go 30 days alcohol-free. It was simply a personal bet with myself to test my self-discipline. I didn’t plan to go more than 30 days. But I eventually would. The first two weeks were hard. I went out with friends and ordered water or diet coke and they’d give me a hard time. “You’re un-Australian!” they’d say to me. But I got through those two weeks and I was off to the races. I felt better, slept better and had much more mental clarity. After 30 days, I’d lost an incredible 13lbs (5.9kg) of fat around my stomach. Just from stopping drinking. I had more money in the bank balance, my skin looked considerably better and I actually enjoyed getting out of bed early morning to exercise. James (left) a few years before he quit drinking at 218lbs (98kg) and James (right), today, alcohol free, at 180lbs (82kg) So I said to myself, “Bugger it. I feel great. I’ll just keep going and see how far I can go.” Little did I know just how far I would go. After 60 days, I craved a cold beer. Or a red wine. Or a Bombay Sapphire gin and tonic with a dash of lime. When it was hot outside, I started dreaming, “I would smash an ice cold beer right now!” But I breathed deeply, downed a diet coke or water and the feeling passed. After three months, I felt terrific. I’d dropped a few more pounds of fat and was starting to put on some lean muscle in the gym. People were complimenting me on how good I looked. I also realized that despite not drinking, I was still managing to have wildly entertaining nights out – even with my drunken friends slurring their words around me. Conversations with women became much more interesting. When I told women I wasn’t drinking, far from them thinking I was an alcoholic in recovery, they actually told me they were impressed with my self-discipline. You don’t need alcohol to have a good time “Beautiful,” I thought. “I can stop drinking and still be fun, entertaining and attractive to women.” Guys were always suspicious of my story, though. They always thought I was a recovering alcoholic who “obviously” had a problem. I just smiled. Between three and six months I was in the zone. I felt energetic and healthy and I actually started to thrive on telling people I had temporarily stopped drinking. But many people – particularly guys – still challenged me. They called me a “Pussy!” Or said to me, “Just have one!” Or “An Aussie that doesn’t drink?!?! F$%k off!” I just laughed, pointed to my head and gave them my stock response, “I’m too strong in mind!” Some idiots even tried to secretly slip vodka into my soda. I had to make a point of always sniffing before drinking if they’d ordered for me. Six to 12 months was fairly easy to be honest. And this is where I noticed the most dramatic changes. I found that my relationships were considerably better – romantic and platonic. For example, I was constantly thinking about how I could help my friends rather than how they could help me. I was more inclined to help people generally and was more considerate. I was calmer and noticed I made better decisions. My work productivity soared. My business made more money. More opportunities – like – came my way. When it did, I was clear in mind, energetic, and seized the opportunity. I ended up getting that gig and hosted SportsCenter for two years. I did, however, find I got tired at night time and went to sleep earlier. Listen, I could still burn the midnight oil until 5am during my sobriety. But I found I didn’t really want to. I felt like nothing that good really happened after 1am anyway. So I would party hard – alcohol-free – until 1am. Most people who just met me weren’t even ever aware I wasn’t drinking. I could still be the life of the party with nobody even knowing. Then I headed home to be asleep most Friday and Saturday nights by no later than 2am. James still James partying late - alcohol free I was up at 8am or 9am on weekends to hit the gym, showered, had breakfast and was ready to tackle the day by 11am when my mates were just dragging their lazy hungover backsides out of bed. When I reached the personal milestone of one year without drinking, I found myself back in Austin at South by Southwest. I went to a pub, ordered a Budweiser, and put it to my mouth. For James, no alcohol means more energy for exercise It smelled good. I had every intention of drinking that beer. But something stopped me from taking a sip. I paused and thought about it for a minute. I decided that all the pros of not drinking outnumbered the cons. So I said to myself, “I’ll just keep going.” So I did. I put the Budweiser down and haven’t picked up a drink since. March 12, 2014, is four years to the day since I gave myself that initial 30-day challenge. I’m 20lbs (9kg) lighter today than I was when I started on March 12, 2010. I’m 38lbs (17kg) lighter than when I was at my porkiest (See fat face photo above). Drinking definitely kept fat around my waist. Stopping drinking eliminated it. This is likely due to three main things: 1. Alcohol contains a lot of carbs 2. Drinking makes you eat a lot more food, especially bad food like fries and desserts 3. Quitting drinking gives you more energy which turns you into a fat-burning machine. I’m not for one moment suggesting you should quit drinking entirely like I did. Obviously, I am an extreme case. But my story clearly shows some of the positive benefits you can get if you do quit. Even just reducing your alcohol consumption by a few drinks a week, I believe only positive things can happen. If I have a drink today, no worries. I’ve accomplished my goal. But I just don’t feel like having a drink. In summary: PROS: I feel better, look better, work better, act better, am better, have more money, have better quality of friends, really enjoy a nice ice cold water, don’t miss alcohol, realize I CAN party like a rock star WITHOUT alcohol, friends who’ve known me a long time say I’m a considerably nicer and more agreeable person CONS: It is sometimes awkward explaining to new friends or business associates why you don’t drink. BUT…that initial awkwardness is mostly felt by THEM, not by you. And you can’t control how they feel. If you decide you want to give it a try, trust that the pros will likely outweigh the cons. Set yourself a 30-day-goal. Or a two or three-month goal. Test it. See how you feel. See if it works for you. Or go for a year. Or don’t do it at all. If you’re happy drinking, keep drinking! I love drinking! I love to drink a six-pack of beer and a bottle of red with the best of them. I’m sure I’ll do it again one day. But for now, I’m happy with water and soda and feel like I am the best version of me."
