In this thought-provoking episode of The Free Thought Project Podcast, Jason and Matt sit down with James Maskell, a trailblazer in the world of functional and integrative medicine. James has spent over a decade challenging the status quo in the healthcare industry and pushing for a system that prioritizes wellness, prevention, and personalized care over the profit-driven treatment of symptoms. James is the founder of the Functional Forum—the world's largest integrative medicine conference—and the author of the acclaimed book The Community Cure. He's also a pioneer in creating scalable solutions like Knew Health and HealCommunity, which aim to empower individuals and communities to take back control of their health. During this episode, we dive deep into the healthcare industrial complex, exploring how it often focuses on masking symptoms with pharmaceuticals rather than addressing root causes like diet, exercise, and environmental factors. We unpack the dangers of siloed thinking in medicine and discuss how a systems approach—like that seen in functional medicine—could solve many of these issues. James brings a wealth of knowledge to the table, offering actionable solutions and hopeful insights into how communities can reclaim their health. As always, we end on a white-pill note, highlighting the power of collective action and grassroots efforts to challenge a broken system. Don't miss this powerful discussion about how we can break free from the stranglehold of the healthcare industrial complex and build a healthier, freer future. Our podcast guest, Michael Mabry, DO, works in a fully capitated medical group in Johnson City, Tennessee. Capitation is a fee-per-patient model, which tends to promote health by incentivizing preventative medicine, chronic disease reversal and helping patients maintain their health.  Implementing group medical visits has allowed Dr. Mabry's practice to improve patient outcomes and increase the local community's access to lifestyle medicine. In his group visits, patients who have similar medical issues come together once a month for a two-hour visit to learn relevant health information. Dr. Mabry also shared that he can spend more time with patients individually because he has systemized patient education. Part of the success of the group visits, according to Dr. Mabry, comes from the much-needed sense of community experienced by participants. Early in his career, he learned about how to build and scale his practice through some of the first Functional Forum events and the Group Visit Toolkits from Lifestyle Matrix Resource Center. When you listen to this episode, you'll also learn about the following: How to connect your business needs with your passion for lifestyle medicine to evolve health care The benefits of capitation as a business model How you can foster connections with your local community to build your business Practical alternatives for dysfunctional payment models in the health care industry And much more!

On this episode, Jon D. Kaiser, MD taught us about the mitochondrial health and chronic disease connection. Dr. Kaiser is a mitochondrial specialist with over thirty years of clinical and research experience in applying functional medicine approaches to treat complex medical conditions, including HIV/AIDS, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), fibromyalgia and long COVID. Dr. Kaiser began his career as an HIV/AIDS specialist in San Francisco at the height of the HIV epidemic. He found that many of his patients needed nutritional and mitochondrial support, especially after manifesting antiviral medication side effects. He developed protocols to help patients improve their baseline health with an original nutraceutical formulation that supports mitochondrial health. Dr. Kaiser joined James to discuss how he has applied his protocols to help patients with other chronic illnesses and post-infection syndromes. Tune in to learn more from Dr. Kaiser about the following topics:        Lifestyle factors that support healing beyond other integrative interventions          How mitochondria are chemically and electrically connected and communicate with each other throughout the body         Parasympathetic activation as a critical component of recovery          How the poor mitochondrial function impacts the neuro-endocrine-immune axis and gastrointestinal tract        His vision for the next steps in medicine, including the need for a readily available blood test that assays the health of mitochondria in blood cells This episode continues to explore the theme laid out in the August 2023 Functional Forum, Mitochondrial Mayem, where we learned how mitochondrial dysfunction leads to a wide range of chronic illnesses—from autoimmunity to cardiometabolic disease, neurologic disorders and more.

“America's drop in life expectancy is ridiculous compared to the rest of the world. And there's so many things driving that and many of those things would be helped with the deployment of functional medicine at scale,” explains James Maskell, co-founder of the Functional Forum and author of The Evolution of Medicine and The Community Cure. The increase in people being diagnosed with chronic illnesses is a real problem, especially in America. In order to really change this, functional medicine and group visits have to be adopted on a wide scale. But how do you get consumers to commit to making the necessary changes? And how do you equip integrative and functional medicine providers to guide that transition more effectively?  In this episode, James discusses the benefits of group care, the importance of finding ways to deliver the functional medicine system without stacking more tasks onto the doctors' plates, and the ways in which a provider can become a private functional medicine practitioner without even having to open a whole new physical practice.    Quotes  “You could probably start a practice for $20,000 or less because you just needed a laptop, you could do majority telemedicine,  work in a co-working space, and you don't need all of the kind of capital that was needed previously.” (6:48-7:00 | James) “The Evolution of Medicine brand and company has always been to help doctors make the switch to practice in a low overhead functional medicine environment.” (9:20-9:29 | James) “We needed to really find a way of delivering this functional medicine operating system in a way that was not reliant on doctors becoming executors, actually not reliant on doctors at all.” (11:06-11:17 | James) “Do virtual groups work? It turns out they do, and in many cases, much better.” (14:42-14:46 | James)  “People were so grateful to have this kind of community. We saw people supporting each other in interesting ways. And we saw also that with these longitudinal sessions, like it started off as a three month group, real friendships were possible. And they were not only possible, but they were happening.” (17:11-17:27 | James) “America's drop in life expectancy is ridiculous compared to the rest of the world. The Catalyst: Sparking Creative Transformation in Healthcare

“Not only do you solve loneliness in the groups, but you actually create a structure whereby new behaviors can be implemented as a norm within the group,” shares James Maskell, Creator of The Functional Forum and Author of The Community Cure. James created a community system for functional medicine practitioners and patients with chronic diseases that is virtual, accessible, and provides group-based care. James realized that groups were necessary for treating chronic disease because people are more successful when they have a support system backing them and because the real healing happens in between doctor's appointments during day to day life.    Many people who suffer with chronic illnesses such as autoimmune diseases, do not believe they can be cured. Having a group around them that is supportive and truly believes they can reverse their disease is pivotal for patients' mindsets. Loneliness is linked to worse health outcomes, so a group setting can help by reducing loneliness in chronically ill patients. It is also useful for creating structure and reinforcing healthy behaviors that may not be as easy to stick with individually.    Tune into this week's episode of The Catalyst to learn more about the community care model of functional medicine and the incredible success rate these programs have for treating and reversing chronic diseases.    Quotes • “The first question that I asked is, ‘Is chronic disease reversible?' And I think that has to be the foundation question. Because if chronic disease is going up like this, and the cost of chronic disease is going up like this, then ultimately, we have to really understand what is chronic disease? Where does it come from? How is it different from acute disease? And how do we get people out of it?” (3:59-4:19 | James)  • “Not only do you solve loneliness in the groups, but you actually create a structure where new behaviors can be implemented as a norm within the group.” (13:20-13:29 | James) • “If you create a whole episode of care that uses Zooms and allows people to connect in between the Zooms, that whole episode can be more effective than coming to a location every week. And the reason for that is that in between the Zooms, is where health happens.” (14:52-15:09 | James) • “You can create new profit centers on insurance and reduce burnout by taking the time element that's needed for behavior change, put it on the group, so you can focus on your precision work.” (44:39-44:52 | James)   Links HealCommunity Website: www.healcommunity.com   Connect with Lara:  Website: https://drlarasalyer.com Instagram: @drlarasalyer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/drlarasalyer Linked-In: https://www.linkedin.com/in/drlarasalyer/ YouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/c/DrLaraSalyer TikTok: @Creativity.Doctor   Podcast production and show notes provided by HiveCast.fm

He also hosts the Evolution of Medicine podcast, which just celebrated its 80th episode. And he is the author of two books, “The Community Cure” and “The Evolution of Medicine.” In this episode of The FM Shift, James joins us to share his journey into the functional medicine field. He shares his perspective on what functional medicine is and what it should be so we can make a greater impact on a greater number of people. Back to the Roots James has been on an incredible journey so far, and since 2014, he has been helping functional medicine practitioners find new ways to move the needle and grow their business. James is able to offer a unique perspective to business problems at FM practices because he doesn't look at them through the lens of a clinician. He has been able to help doctors digitize their practices, build a low-overhead business model, and pursue their passion for functional medicine full-time with greater profitability. James is going back to the fundamental roots of functional medicine, because before we can address the needs of individual people, we have to transform their desire to want to participate. Getting Buy-in From Your Patients The real work of functional medicine practitioners is coming face-to-face with another human being and helping them create a plan of attack to address the things that are making them unhealthy. With a more effective business model in place, these types of doctors can make an impact on a greater number of patients. The most effective functional medicine practices James has worked with put lifestyle first. Once you put your patients in control of their own life and act as a guide on their journey, you will see your practice grow. If you want to get in the front end of this new era of functional medicine, you have to get more buy-in from your patients, helping them understand why they will see results from working with you, and how to participate in their care. Did you know that some researchers believe that loneliness is worse for you than smoking? James Maskell is the creator of the Functional Forum, the world’s largest functional medicine conference, and is here today to talk about the power of community and why he is passionate about finding a cure for loneliness. Loneliness and a lack of community can be linked to multiple lifestyle-driven chronic diseases, and James wants to create a new standard of social connections to help others relieve pain and reverse disease. Re-engaging people into a social community is a necessary medical intervention, and James works to help bring people together around a shared intention of health creation to create the functional medicine approach of the future.  Everything from ways for creating a connection while dealing with an auto-immune disease to the importance of community when going through pregnancy is on the table today as we discuss this exciting evolution of functional medicine and bringing healthcare to the masses.  If you want to gain insight into loneliness research, the role social isolation can have on your health and want to gain tips on how to fix loneliness and create the social community you desire, this is the episode for you.  What role does social community and loneliness play in your health? Share what surprised you most about this episode in the comments on the episode page.    In This Episode Understanding the connection between loneliness, stress and chronic disease The transformative power of embracing community in functional medicine Tips for living your life in a more socially connected and healthier way  Ways that practitioners and patients can use social groups to solve pain points Online tools to create offline social connection and a health community   Quotes “It’s not really the value just of the practitioner and the medicine. There is a real value that’s created by people helping each other. That sounds like an equation that could really scale and grow.” (6:52) “There are biological reasons for you to have this illness, there are psychological reasons why you have this illness, and there are social reasons why you have it too. And so ultimately my thesis is, a bio-psycho-social issue needs a bio-psycho-social cure.” (10:45) “Together they come together in this structure where you have time to be able to do the medicine right and you have a structure whereby which people can support each other to learn and to make behavior change the default rather than something that is hard to execute.” (23:09) “Having things on the calendar that are things that you are just going to do every week by default, especially things that are healthy in their own right are super important.” (26:36) “Showing up and showing up consistently and making new friends, it could have a dramatic impact on you in the next year, 5 years, 10 years, rest of your life.” (30:18)   Links Get Your Free Copy of The Community Cure by James Maskell Functional Forum Website CenteringParenting Website   Find the full show notes for this episode here Keep up with all things Love Is Medicine Follow Razi on Facebook |Instagram

And maybe I’m not born here to be an investment banker. Maybe I’m here to follow a different kind of a path.” (09:14)“And, just to take a step back, it’s really healthcare where the goal is self-efficacy. And, what that means is the goal where people can take care of themselves and they don’t need a doctor and they don’t need medication.” (14:10)“There was one stat that I have in the book which is that if you’re subject to a targeted rejection – which is someone intending to break a social bond with you, like a divorce or you get fired from your job – your risk of depression goes up by twenty-two times.” (25:05)“The reason why I think it makes sense to reestablish those groups in healthcare is that, eventually, everyone comes across some sort of health issue. And that’s a moment where we can sort of bring them into a group if they need it.” (32:15)“And the Therapeutic Order comes from naturopathic medicine, and all it says is ‘we should start with the least costly, least invasive interventions first and then work our way up to drugs and surgery as a last resort.” (40:44)“So ultimately, my vision for transforming healthcare is really to create this bottom layer of empowerment groups that facilitate turning on the body’s healing mechanisms and dealing with weakened systems that have been weakened as a result of malnutrition and so forth.” (44:20)“Here’s the thing. If you teach someone to meditate and you do it ten percent wrong, what is the downside risk of that? It’s nothing. If you give people the wrong drug, the downside risk could be death.” (1:01:13)“I think that, for practitioners who are involved, I think you really have to realize that your expertise is not as valuable as your ability to help people help themselves.” (1:04:36)LINKS MENTIONEDBetter! Success comes from support. We are actually more strongly impacted by our peers and social networks than by our genetics—this is huge when it comes to changing our health. That’s why I’m such an advocate for community-based healthcare. Putting people in groups, where they can be heard by others in similar situations, supported, and held accountable is an incredible tool for creating long-lasting change. I’ve seen this thousands of times at the Cleveland Clinic Center for Functional Medicine, where we provide a Functioning for Life program using this model, and it’s revolutionizing healthcare. KNEW Health Finally, the alternative to expensive health insurance you've been waiting for. Click here to learn more about KNEW Health today. KNEW Health is not an insurance company. We are a community of healthy, happy, wellness-minded individuals like yourself, who work together to stay well and contribute to a community fund to support one another’s large medical bills. Think of this as a safety net for large, unexpected medical costs. Because you take care of your health, you’re likely to need less medical expense support — so why should you pay insane insurance premiums when you can have your large expenses supported by our Medical Cost-Sharing Community that is over 10,000 members strong? With conventional health insurance, you–the healthy person who exercises, doesn’t smoke, and eats fresh fruits and vegetables–are subsidizing the medical expenses of people who smoke, don’t exercise, and eat junk food all day. How unfair is that? Furthermore, with health insurance, it’s likely you’re paying these high premiums and yet not using many of your benefits. That’s money down the drain each and every month. At KNEW Health, you’ll be paying so much less each month–which gives you more money to invest in wellness and preventative care, such as fitness classes, acupuncture, massage, healthy fresh food, and herbs and supplements. Wouldn’t you rather invest your monthly health expenses into life-giving wellness care, rather than sending that money to faceless health insurance bureaucracies, never to be seen again? By making a commitment to living a healthy lifestyle, you’re helping transform health care.   "Many of us don't need these expensive medical visits, lab tests, and pharmaceuticals. Most chronic disease is driven by lifestyle and can be fixed by lifestyle." - James Maskell Listen To Episode 259 As James Maskell Uncovers: KNEW Health - What it is, how it can help you, and how it's changing the narrative around healthy lifestyles and self-awareness. Why he did the KNEW Health Tour - a 4-month family trip to launch evolution of alternative health. Why functional medicine goes much further into our health's journey than just a couple of lab tests. How functional medicine can help prevent the body from degrading, slowing down, and experiencing chronic disease. The Community Micro Practice - how it's benefiting the world of functional medicine and changing the lives of both healthcare practitioners and their patients. The vital importance of looking at our emotions and past traumas so that they do not manifest into a disease. Steps people can take to begin looking for a functional medicine practitioner that's right for them. What Direct Primary Care is and how it can improve a doctor's relationship with patients and the ability to afford healthcare. His 3-part strategy for the true transformation of healthcare explained. The high amount of insurance he was facing while living and working in New York City and what answers he found when he sought out different opportunities. His mission to begin his own program to help people save money on insurance and encourage others to reach out to functional medical doctors when they really need it. The experiences that transformed his life and drove him to keep going in his mission and see this functional medicine movement through. How the company, Heal, is changing healthcare by having practitioners go straight to the patients' homes. The flood of new applications and tools that are available right now such as GoodRx and MDSave which can help you cut down on the price of healthcare. His explanation for why it's unlikely that functional medicine will be delivered through health insurance anytime soon. Why it's easier to change your behavior and reduce chronic disease while in a group environment compared to working one-on-one with a singular healthcare provider. How healing with psychedelics and marijuana can play a part in functional medicine. The first step you can take towards shifting your health by finding a community environment that can help you. "More medicine doesn't actually equal better health outcomes. In fact, the more you use the medical system, the worse your off your health outcomes are going to be in the long run." - James Maskell "Functional medicine is a new operating system of delivering health that is focused on three main principles: root cause resolution, holistic viewpoint, and participatory system. What really differentiates functional medicine from integrative, naturopathic, or holistic medicine is that it's a reproducible system and structure which helps everyone follow the same steps. In that sense, it prioritizes what you should be doing in a specific order and that makes it much more efficient than other methods." - James Maskell "The most effective way that functional medicine is being delivered is through a group format such as that at The Cleveland Clinic. There's really something powerful about the vulnerability of being in front of a group and the community that's created by being amongst supportive peers." - James Maskell "What will it take to facilitate a consciousness transformation in how we view healthcare? There is a very clear engine of transformation consciousness that happens when people go to a functional medicine doctor. When you go to an empathetic provider like that, they will empower you to take action to form a new story about your life." - James Maskell "If you can get people to change behavior in a group environment, a lot of the chronic disease will go away. Many of us don't need these expensive medical visits, lab tests, and pharmaceuticals. Most chronic disease is driven by lifestyle and can be fixed by lifestyle, we just need structures that are efficient enough to deliver it."  - James Maskell Links From Today's Show James Maskell Facebook Twitter Instagram LinkedIn KNEW Health Facebook Instagram YouTube The Functional Forum The Evolution of Medicine The Evolution of Medicine by James Maskell Rythmia GoodRx app  MDSave app Heal.com ICEERS - International Center for Ethnobotanical Education, Research Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies - MAPS Dr. Mark Hyman Valerian/lemon balm use for sleep disorders during menopause. (Organifi GOLD) The Cleveland Clinic Jason Silva Dr. Kelly Brogan Dr. Jeffrey Gladd Michael Pollan WFR 096 Daniel Schmachtenberger WFR 185 Gerry Powell WFR 140 Chris Kresser WFR 249 Niraj Naik About James Maskell With the soul of an advocate and the mind of an entrepreneur, James Maskell has spent the past decade sparking debate and encouraging a shift away from conventional western medicine and toward a wellness-centered, functional medicine model--starting with the doctors themselves. I want to start off today's episode with a big thank you to my guest, James Maskell, for making me aware of functional medicine and kickstarting the journey I'm on today (even if he didn't know it).   Before I started with the School of Applied Functional Medicine, I read his book, The Evolution of Medicine, and was attending Monthly meetings at the Amen Clinic here in Atlanta to watch the Functional Forum as a group.   So, again, a big thank you!   Who is James Maskell?   James Maskell has spent the past decade encouraging a shift away from conventional western medicine and toward a wellness-centered, functional medicine model. To that end, he created Functional Forum, the world's largest integrative medicine conference.   He's also the founder of the https://goevomed.com/ (Evolution of Medicine), a community e-commerce platform that provides highly curated and customized resources, tools, products, and services, making it easier and more affordable for conventional doctors to embark on a new way of delivering healthcare.   But I brought James on the show to talk about the launch an incredible new project: a health cooperative called KNEW Health, which is poised to fight chronic disease through prevention and by using functional & integrative medicine.   What is KNEW Health?   I love this quote from James: “Together, we can disrupt the current healthcare model, shifting the paradigm away from the over-dependency on an allopathic, disease-centered model, to create a more sustainable, preventative system.”   To bring people together behind this mission, James has been traveling the country with the KNEW Vision Tour, a 22-city, grass-roots effort dedicated to massively raising national awareness about functional medicine as the solution to our nation's health crisis.   He's been, of course, sharing his vision for KNEW Health and the integrated set of services that it offers members, which James calls the 5 C's: Culture, Community, Coaching, Care, and Cost Sharing.   There's already over a million Americans (including myself) using medical cost sharing models to offset medical costs, similar to insurance but without the same limitations. However, KNEW expands on this concept with a fully realized health plan. Plus, KNEW Health is the first entirely non-denominational medical cost sharing program in the U.S.   “As long as you're interested in health and wellness and participate in a healthy lifestyle, you can be part of the KNEW community.”   --     Resources: Learn more at https://knewhealth.com/ (https://knewhealth.com/) Listen: The Evolution of Medicine podcast Connect with James:  Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | YouTube Read: The Evolution of Medicine: Join the Movement to Solve Chronic Disease and Fall Back in Love with Medicine Read: Top 10 Ways to Save Money on Healthcare   Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? The sad truth about health insurance in America is that it isn’t making people any healthier or more optimized. How could medical cost sharing be a solution to this issue? What is the 3-step plan for revolutionizing healthcare? How can the introduction of health coaching actually alleviate a lot of the pressure placed on physicians? On this episode, I talk to influencer and founder of the Functional Forum, James Maskell, about how to change healthcare for the better. If we’re all incentivized as a community to keep costs low and stay healthy, why don’t we do things to facilitate that? -James Maskell   Three Takeaways Doctors know that the current sick care model is filled with problems, and that a change is needed.   Medical cost sharing can revolutionize healthcare and remove the unnecessarily high costs.   A non-prescriber on the front end of medicine is a great strategy for reducing healthcare costs. At the start of the show, James shared how he got into the world of functional medicine, and some of the issues that have been created by the sick care model. We also talked about why traditional healthcare is a scam that takes way too much money, and why a lot of people who care about optimization choose cash-pay instead. We talked about how the sick care model is also destroying the trust between patients and doctors.   We also discussed: How doctors are short-changed by the system How doctors can enroll and get trained with Knew Health The 3-step plan to revolutionizing medicine   The most beneficial form of medicine looks a lot more like functional medicine than the sick care model. Medical cost sharing is a way to care for the people who can’t get help in the current model. If we can combine functional medicine with affordable, scalable solution with medical cost sharing, it will completely change the game. Instead of waiting for people to get sick, we’ve got to start being proactive, live with purpose, and be part of a community that prioritizes health.   Guest Bio- James Maskell is the creator of Functional Forum and, the world’s largest integrative medicine conference. Lifestyle-driven chronic disease accounts for 86% of healthcare costs in America, but the current system was not designed to address the issue. Dr. Salyer, DO was featured on the Functional Forum this year, is an enthusiastic member of our Practice Accelerator program, and runs a functional medicine practice in rural Wisconsin. In this podcast, Dr. Salyer shares one of the most impressive innovations we’ve ever heard in functional medicine: how to take the most time-consuming, cumbersome part of functional medicine: filling out the matrix/intake; and turn it into a fast, efficient and participatory exercise using group visits. Dr. Salyer’s idea of cross-pollination between the initial appointment and group visits is an absolute game-changing strategy for functional medicine practitioners…and she’s proven it works. Plus you’ll learn: How Dr. Salyer introduced the idea of functional medicine to her small Midwest community Which patient education and marketing tools and technologies have been most valuable in building her practice Exactly how she sets up her initial appointment/group visits to maximize efficiency in filling out the matrix

In Episode 019 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing I share a conversation with integrative psychiatrist Will Van Derveer MD. As you will hear in the podcast, I first came across Will as part of his joint presentation with Dr. Janet Settle on the February 2017 edition of the Evolution of Medicine's Functional Forum: the Evolution of Integrative Psychiatry. Serendipitously, before I had a chance to reach out to Will to thank him for his inspiring presentation, he contacted me following the release of my E-Book on Integrative and Functional Medicine Education, and a friendship was born.  Will Van Derveer, MD is the founder and medical director of the Integrative Psychiatric Healing Center in Boulder, CO, where he has practiced integrative psychiatry for 15 years. Dr. Van Derveer is a diplomate of the American Board of Integrative and Holistic Medicine (ABoIHM) since 2013, and he was board certified in the first wave of diplomates of the new American Board of Integrative Medicine (ABIM) in 2016. He is course director for the University of Colorado psychiatry residents' course on integrative psychiatry, and is a co-founder and core faculty of the in-depth integrative psychiatry training program, The Psychiatry Masterclass. Dr. Van Derveer regards emotional trauma as a significant root cause of psychiatric symptoms in integrative psychiatry practice, along with gut issues, hormone imbalances, inflammation, mitochondrial dysfunction, and other functional medicine problems. He provides to most of his patients somatic psychotherapy for trauma recovery. Trained as a meditation instructor, he teaches mindfulness to his patients. In addition to his clinical work and teaching, he was co-investigator in 2016 a Phase II randomized clinical trial of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for treatment-resistant post-traumatic stress disorder, sponsored by the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), the protocol of which has recently been approved by FDA for an upcoming phase III clinical trial. In our conversation, we dig in deep as Will shares his revolutionary framework for approaching mental illness, one where Will recognizes a trinity of interconnected and primary contributions to a patient's present illness including psychospiritual disturbance, physiologic imbalances and a patient's specific presenting symptoms. Will provides us with some practical methods for using lifestyle approaches to address chronic mental illness and outlines how he incorporates both medications and lifestyle medicine in his practice. We explore some of the fascinating science behind the bidirectional gut brain axis and the influence of various dietary and environmental factors such as gluten and glyphosate to disrupt one's optimal functioning.  Seeking to revise or perhaps dispel the currently espoused neurotransmitter imbalance theory of mental illness, Will walks us through the inflammatory cytokine or the inflammatory brain hypothesis and its power, in combination with the exploration of adverse and traumatic experiences to explain much of our current mental health crisis. IMPORTANT LINKS  Follow Will and his work  www.willvanderveer.com To take part in the revolutionary Psychiatry Masterclass  www.psychiatrymasterclass.com To watch Will and Janet's Presentation at the February 2017 Functional Forum   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqQdkyYzXgU Will offers up some of his personal research as well, working with psychedelics in combination with various forms of cognitive therapy in order to help those suffering with PTSD and others negatively impacted by adverse childhood experiences. We even dabble in exploring the emerging field of genetics, pharmacogenomics and the role of genetic testing to inform treatment in mental illness. There was so much to cover in this podcast, and we will certainly have Will back for more of his insights and wisdom. James Maskell is the Creator of The Functional Forum and the Founder and CEO of Evolution of Medicine. Unfortunately, today’s traditional doctors are simply not aware of what the benefits of understanding your own gene makeup are, and how it can help you medically. This is why James discusses what the Interrupting your Genetics summit is about, on the show, and why it’s important to become better informed about the makeup of your genes.   Key Takeaways: [2:10] What is the ‘Interrupting your Genetics’ summit about? [5:30] Genetic testing and understanding our genetics has only gotten better, but not enough people are aware of the impact it can have simply by understanding this information. [6:00] The Interrupting your Genetics summit is completely free! [7:15] What are some of the topics the summit guests will be talking about? [10:20] The new way of thinking is that everything in your body is connected. The more your doctor understands this, the more he/she will understand that functional medicine is the only logical choice. [11:15] Today’s doctors are just not educated in this field. They’re unfortunately deeply behind on what understanding your genetic background can really do for patients medically. [14:00] When James did his genetics tests, what were some of the things he found out about himself? [16:55] James offers some final words of wisdom about the importance of understanding your genetics.   Mentioned in This Episode: Go Wellness website: Go Wellness Call Regan: 801-582-2011 Email Regan: regan@gowellness.com Email the Team: info@gowellness.com Functionalforum.com Goevomed.com Geneticssummit.com http://healthaffiliate.center/21760-15.html

In Episode 008 of A Medicinal Mind: Wisdom and Wellbeing, we welcome the innovative creator of the world's largest integrative medicine conference, the Functional Forum and integrative medicine visionary James Maskell. I was quite fortunate to connect with James in October 2016 at a Functional Forum event in Washington D.C. and have since collaborated in creating and releasing my E-Book on Functional and Integrative Medicine Education. James has been perhaps my single biggest influence pushing me to become an educator and advocate for functional medicine and is a tremendously passionate role model for anyone seeking to reverse chronic disease and achieve optimal health. Back in March of this year, I was honored to be a part of James' podcast The Evolution of Medicine's Functional Forum, where we discussed the vision and purpose of the functional medicine education resource E-Book and the greater need to expand medical education beyond medical school walls and hospital wards.   As a continuation of this conversation, we share today in a reflective and hopeful discussion addressing A brief State of the Union for the Functional Forum and Functional Medicine education as a whole. What are we doing well as a community? How and where have we progressed? What are the biggest challenges yet to be faced?   Updates on educational opportunities through the Institute for Functional Medicine New pricing for medical students and residents The opportunity to attend conferences via online streaming A new foundational and inexpensive online module offered through the IFM for those just getting started in Functional Medicine or wishing for a robust refresher.    Ways to continue to grow community and promote this type of care in the next generation of clinicians.  Where is the best place to start a practice? How do we engage more medical students? Residents? pushing them to start a private practice in the first place?  Is a church an ideal starting place for a Functional medicine micropractice?   James' latest projects and visions for the Functional Forum  Journey to 100. Can we get human life expectancy to 100? How the Functional Forum is adapting and evolving to meet the needs of each community How they are supporting innovators bringing CME and medical students into the Functional Forum meet-ups   I was so thrilled to share in this conversation with James and hope you enjoy and feed off the the tremendous energy and passion in this exhilarating discussion. Our next Functional Forum is entitled the "Evolution of Primary Care", which will address the most significant way functional medicine can impact medicine as a whole... as an updated operating system for primary care.   Dr. Leo Galland is one of the fore-fathers of the functional medicine operating system. Outside of this presentation on the first Evolution of Medicine summit we have also welcomed him to the Functional Forum stage twice. Some of his important contributions to medicine are concepts like "leaky gut", "dysbiosis" and "SIBO".   But the most impactful change to the old system is the transition to patient-centered diagnoses. Medicine evolving from a doctor-centered structure to a patient-centered structure and this reflects Dr. Galland's unique contribution to the operating system.  In this podcast, Dr. Galland addresses how this new model was developed and why it's such an important part of the evolution of medicine.   On this podcast you will hear: Why everyone deserves a “patient-centered diagnosis” and how it began The 3 factors driving and mediating chronic disease Questions you should be asking to deliver the best care Register to join us for the Evolution of Primary Care

Dr. Dupuis shares the story of his journey to building a successful Functional Medicine practice.  We could not be happier to hear from a doctor whose story illustrates the power of implementing the solutions offered in not only our programs but also the resources that we've been recommending for the past few years. Dr. Dupuis started his functional medicine education with Functional Medicine University and The Kalish Institute. Later, he discovered the Functional Forum.  From there he took advantage of a free practice assessment with Gabe Hoffman, co-founder of Evolution of Medicine which resulted in working with Freedom Practice Coaching to change his practice model. After adding an additional 80k to his yearly income in just the first month with FPC, Dr. Dupuis added the Evolution of Medicine Practice Accelerator and from there he started using Nudge Coach to keep in touch with his new patients that now stretched 100 miles outside of his small town. He has recently become a Functional Forum Meetup Host and has become the "go to" doc in his community for practitioners looking to make the same changes in their personal and professional lives. In this podcast, you will hear: Dupuis' journey to functional medicine how his business and personal life has changed how interactions with patients has been impacted how Dr. Dupuis tackled the most important part of change - implementation what resources have been invaluable for transitioning to a Functional Medicine micropractice The Evolution of Medicine: Practice Accelerator  The Practice Accelerator is the quintessential training program.
