Story at-a-glance Low vitamin K intake damages brain function and memory by reducing brain cell growth and increasing inflammation, especially in the brain region responsible for learning and memory Vitamin K2 is important for directing calcium to bones instead of arteries, supporting brain health and reducing inflammation, but most Western diets lack sufficient K2 In a study, mice fed a diet low in vitamin K showed significantly poorer performance in memory tests and had fewer new brain cells forming in key cognitive areas Good sources of vitamin K2 include grass-fed animal products (egg yolks, liver), certain cheeses like Gouda and Brie, and fermented foods like natto Vitamin K2 is fat-soluble and should be consumed with healthy fats for optimal absorption

Each week, I ask my guest five questions designed to nourish their mind, body, and soul pre interview. These questions help us explore what makes each guest tick as an imperfect, evolving human, taking them out of their heads and into their bodies. While our discussions often go deep into the intellect, these questions invite my guests to step out of their comfort zones, gain a fresh perspective, and perhaps hold a bit more compassion for themselves. I believe this shift from headspace to heart space is something we can all relate to – it's the universal journey of being human. And as a listener, I hope you'll come away feeling a little more connected, not only to these stories but to the shared truths and vulnerabilities we uncover here. Each conversation is an opportunity to peek behind the scenes and share in the humanity of those on the other side of the microphone.Sixth - Professor of Clinical Psychology, Paul Gilbert Listen to the full episode here.Watch the full episode on YouTube here.***Thank you to my wonderful sponsor! Transcript with time code: https://cuttingedgehealth.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/04/Transcript-49-Dr-Annie-Fenn.pdf In this episode of the Cutting Edge Health: Preventing Cognitive Decline Podcast, host Jane Rogers interviews Dr. Annie Fenn, a former OBGYN who shifted careers after her mother's Alzheimer's diagnosis to focus on preventing cognitive decline through nutrition. Dr. Fenn founded the Brain Health Kitchen and now educates others about the connection between food and brain health. She discusses the MIND diet, a scientifically-backed, brain-specific adaptation of the Mediterranean diet, highlighting 10 brain-healthy food groups—such as berries, leafy greens, nuts, legumes, and olive oil—and emphasizing the need to limit processed foods, red meat, and alcohol. Think moderate drinking, especially red wine, is good for your brain? Dr. Annie Fenn challenges this long-held belief, citing groundbreaking research like the UK Biobank study. Discover the shocking truth: even moderate alcohol consumption (defined as 1 drink/day for women, 2 for men) can shrink your brain faster. Learn why this level is too much for healthy brain aging and why those with cognitive concerns should avoid alcohol altogether. Rethink your drink for better brain health! ***** ANNIE FENN is a physician, chef, and author of The Brain Health Kitchen: Preventing Alzheimer's Through Food (Artisan 2023), a science-based cookbook and care manual for the brain. She founded the Brain Health Kitchen, the only cooking school focused exclusively on helping people prevent cognitive decline through food and lifestyle. After twenty years as a board-certified ob-gyn, she traded in her stethoscope for an apron to pursue her passion for the culinary arts. But it was her mother's diagnosis with dementia that helped Fenn find her path and her new calling, one that enabled her to not only help her mother but also create significant and meaningful impact for others. Dr. Fenn hosts Brain Health Retreats in Italy, Mexico, and Costa Rica. She writes Brain Health Kitchen, a twice-weekly newsletter on Substack to a large community of food-loving brain health enthusiasts, where she provides cooking classes, in-depth lifestyle guides, and recipes. Dr. Fenn is an adjunct faculty member at the University of Cincinnati and Harvard University, where she lectures young adults and medical students about brain health. Fenn lives in Jackson, Wyoming, where she enjoys skiing, cycling, foraging for mushrooms and berries, and exploring the Teton mountains with her husband and dogs. ***** Cutting Edge Health podcast website: https://cuttingedgehealth.com/ Cutting Edge Health Social and YouTube: YouTube channel: youtube.com/@cuttingedgehealthpodcast Instagram - https://instagram.com/cuttingedgehealthpodcast Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/Cutting-Edge-Health-Podcast-with-Jane-Rogers-101036902255756 Please note that the information provided in this show is not medical advice, nor should it be taken or applied as a replacement for medical advice. With rates of Alzheimer's and dementia rising steeply, especially among women, the conventional pharmaceutical model has largely failed in treating the brain. Functional Medicine takes a different systems-based, personalized approach—focusing on inflammation, metabolic health, and environmental exposures—which offers real hope for prevention and even reversal of cognitive decline. In this episode, I discuss, along with Dr. Heather Sandison, Dr. David Perlmutter, and Maria Shriver, why it is possible to reverse cognitive decline and the cutting-edge science of brain health and Alzheimer's prevention. Dr. Heather Sandison is the The New York Times bestselling author of Reversing Alzheimer's The New Toolkit to Improve Cognition and Protect Brain Health. As a renowned naturopathic doctor specializing in neurocognitive medicine, she's the founder of Solcere Health Clinic, San Diego's premier brain optimization clinic, and Marama, a residential program turning memory care into memory recovery. Dr. Sandison has dedicated her career to supporting those suffering with dementia and published her most recent clinical findings in the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease. She's excited to shatter common misconceptions about Alzheimer's and share what she's learned about keeping your brain sharp at any age. Dr. David Perlmutter is a Board-Certified Neurologist and five-time New York Times bestselling author. He serves on the Board of Directors and is a Fellow of the American College of Nutrition. He is the author of Grain Brain and Drop Acid, among others. Dr. Perlmutter received his M.D. degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine where he was awarded the Leonard G. Rowntree Research Award. He serves as a member of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Alzheimer's Disease and has published extensively in peer-reviewed scientific journals including Archives of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and The Journal of Applied Nutrition. Shriver is a bestselling author, award-winning journalist, former First Lady of California, founder of the Women's Alzheimer's Movement, and Strategic Advisor on Women's Health and Alzheimer's at Cleveland Clinic. Shriver works to use her voice and platforms to advance some of our nation's most pressing issues affecting women and women's health. In November 2023, Shriver joined the President and the First Lady to announce the first-ever White House Initiative on Women's Health Research, an effort led by Dr. Biden and the White House Gender Policy Council, to galvanize the Federal government and the private and philanthropic sectors to spur innovation, unleash transformative investment to close research gaps, and improve women's health. Shriver's advocacy led to the establishment of this historic initiative, and she continues to advise and collaborate with Dr. Biden. She is also the co-founder of the brain health and wellness brand MOSH and founder of Shriver Media. This episode is brought to you by BIOptimizers. If you'd like to listen or watch the full episode, click the link below.I sat down with Paul Gilbert for one of the most eye-opening conversations about the mind. What if I told you that you didn't actually choose your emotions? That your brain was wired long before you had any say in the matter? We got into the shadow self, why we resist certain emotions, and how evolution basically tricked us into feeling things like shame, guilt, and fear. Paul explains why we react the way we do, why some emotions feel impossible to control, and—most importantly—how we can work with them instead of against them.If you've ever felt like your mind has a mind of its own, this one's for you.Listen to the full episode here.Watch the full episode on YouTube here.***Thank you to my wonderful sponsors! I had a profound conversation with Professor Paul Gilbert OBE, and what struck me most was Paul's raw honesty about how rage, not love, made him compassionate - a perspective that challenges everything we typically associate with compassion. We dove deep into why compassion is often misunderstood as weakness when it actually requires immense courage. Paul's insights on the evolution of compassion in scientific research over the past 20 years were fascinating, especially how it's reshaping our understanding of mental health and wellbeing. Angela is joined by neuroscience expert, Dr. Tommy Wood, who shares insights on building a better brain and optimising cognitive function across the lifespan. He discusses the importance of exercise on brain health, the impact of different types of exercise on cognitive function, and the benefits of separating tasks to maximise productivity. They also look into the concept of cognitive gears, the effects of multitasking, and the significance of incorporating low cognitive gear activities to unwind before bedtime. KEY TAKEAWAYS We need to emphasise the importance of structuring the workday to optimise productivity by chunking tasks based on cognitive gears and personal energy rhythms. Multitasking, especially when it involves complex tasks, can be detrimental to cognitive performance and learning. Focusing on one task at a time is more effective for deep work and skill acquisition. Engaging in low cognitive gear activities, such as repetitive tasks or household chores, can provide a cognitive break and recharge the brain. Prioritising deep work in the morning when energy levels are high and saving less demanding tasks for later in the day can enhance overall productivity. Maintaining a balance between focused work, breaks, and low cognitive gear activities throughout the day can help optimise cognitive function and prevent burnout. BEST MOMENTS "I think there's a few different ways to think about this” “One measure that I really like is the cognitive gears, which is something that a former colleague of mine, James Hewitt, has kind of popularised. He puts us into three main brain states or cognitive gears and actually relates them to exercise." "I can imagine at that point, right, you're unplugging, you're going to spend time with your partner. If you then go back to work, that's going to create a whole new buzz of energy." "The kind of multitasking that humans are very good at is parallel processing multiple complex related skills at the same time." Is the air you breathe affecting your brain? If you're familiar with the ten keys to a healthy brain, you know that one of the keys is clean environment. Part of that environment is the quality of the air you breathe. You can go weeks without eating, days without water, but you can only go minutes without breathing. Clean air is essential to not just your overall health, but your quality of life. I'm excited to welcome Peter Spiegel to the show today. Peter is the founder and CEO of Ideal Living, a wellness company democratizing quality. His life's purpose has been to enhance the lives of others and help them thrive. You want your home to be a sanctuary, but according to the EPA, indoor air can be anywhere from 5 to 100 times more polluted than outdoor air. Things like perfume, candles, and mold can harm your overall quality of life as the most dangerous particles to the human brain are very, very small. If you want to learn how to manage indoor air quality for your overall well-being, this episode is for you. Angela is joined by Dr. Dale Bredesen, who discusses the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and the difference between Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. He emphasises the importance of early detection and treatment, as Alzheimer's is a progressive disease that can be present for many years before symptoms appear. Dr. Bredesen explains the four phases of Alzheimer's and the potential for prevention and reversal of cognitive decline through lifestyle interventions. KEY TAKEAWAYS Alzheimer's disease is a common and devastating form of dementia that affects millions of people worldwide. Alzheimer's is characterized by a progressive decline in cognitive function, including memory loss, difficulty with language and communication, and impaired daily functioning. Early detection and intervention are crucial in managing Alzheimer's disease. The earlier the treatment is initiated, the better the chances of preventing or reversing cognitive decline. Lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, brain training, detoxification, and targeted supplements play a significant role in preventing and managing Alzheimer's disease. Hormone therapy, specifically bioidentical hormone replacement, may be beneficial for women experiencing menopause-related cognitive decline BEST MOMENTS "Your generation is the first generation that does not have to fear Alzheimer's." "We can pretty much prevent it or do early reversals in just about everyone." "We do see people even in late stages where we get some improvement, but they don't tend to come all the way back to normal." "Sleep is one of the ways that you stay sharp, that you improve your processing speed."
