“At the age of 10, I formed a question in my mind, which was: how can you hate me when you don't even know me? And now, for the next 56 years, I've been looking for the answer to that question.”The son of American Foreign Service members, Daryl Davis grew up in many different countries and was exposed to a variety of cultures, religions, and ideologies. He became an internationally renowned musician, touring and performing with the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, and B.B. King. But a personal experience with bigotry at a young age made him curious about why people hate.“When I met this guy, he was a Grand Dragon. And he rose through the ranks to Imperial Wizard. And when he dropped out, because of this perception change and hanging out with me, he gave me his Klan robe and his hood,” says Mr. Davis.Today, Mr. Davis has made a second career out of befriending white supremacists, neo-Nazis, and members of the Ku Klux Klan, helping over 200 of them to renounce their racist ideology.“People ask me: Daryl, why don't you burn that stuff? No, I'm not going to burn it,” says Mr. Davis, referring to his Klan paraphernalia. “Yes, it is despicable. But it's also a part of our history. And you don't burn our history: the good, the bad, the ugly, and the shameful. You expose it, so it doesn't happen again.”In this episode, we dive into Mr. Davis's childhood, his passion for music, his encounters with the Klan, and the methodology he uses for helping them to renounce their racism.“The greatest weapon to combat racism, anti-Semitism, [and] all types of discrimination is the least expensive weapon known to man. It's free, yet it is the most underused. It's called conversation,” says Mr. Davis.Views expressed in this video are opinions of the host and the guest, and do not necessarily reflect the views of The Epoch Times.

Daryl Davis - One man and the Ku Klux Klan: The power of respectful communicationHow does a black musician who's jammed with the likes of Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, BB King and even Bill Clinton - become friends with an Imperial Wizard from the Ku Klux Klan?In this polarised world, breaking down entrenched positions may be the most important skill needed by us all. If two passionate sides can agree to disagree, long enough to find what they have in common - could we overcome climate change, poverty and even racism? My guest on this episode of Inside Influence podcast would say a resounding yes.On today's Inside Influence Podcast episode I talk to R&B musician and Race Reconciliator Daryl Davis about talking to the “other”.Growing up overseas as the son of diplomats, he returned to the US as a 10-year-old and was shocked to discover that people could hate him because of the colour of his skin. Later that year he saw MLK assassinated. This formed a question that went on to define the course of his life: “‘How can you hate me if you don't even know me?”Through music he discovered a beautiful universal language and had a wonderful career playing the piano for some of the greats such as Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. One night while playing in a bar in Frederick Maryland, he met a Ku Klux Klan member and decided the best way to find an answer to his question was to attend their rallies.Rather than a debate, he was looking to have a conversation. Rather than trying to convince or convert, he decided to approach people with curiosity and respect.Over the past 30 years, Daryl Davis has inspired 200+ people to quit the Ku Klux Klan. Through dialogue and (as you'll come to hear) a thirst to first understand before being understood.Today's Guest Daryl DavisDaryl Davis is an award-winning R&B piano player, actor, author, and race relations expert. He has worked with Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley's Jordanaires, The Legendary Blues Band and many others. He currently tours with The Daryl Davis Band. He is also an actor and appeared on HBO's critically acclaimed series The Wire.As a Race Reconciliator, he has been sent around the world by the State Department to talk about conflict reconciliation and race relations. He has won numerous awards and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, NPR and other media outlets to talk about race relations. He hosts a podcast called Changing Minds and has written a book on his relationships with Klu Klux Klan members called “Klan-destine Relationships”LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/daryl-davis-5226b24/Twitter: https://twitter.com/realdaryldavisInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/realdaryldavis/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/DarylDavisRaceReconciliator/“One person can make an exponential change because when they impact another, that person then goes on to impact another.”“You cannot change someone's reality, they have to change it themselves.”“You have to invite the other to participate and when you see that happen collectively, that is when huge things happen.”You'll learnHis journey from that bar in Maryland to immersing himself in the world of the KKK – what he learned, how he has learned to respond and what that has to teach us about having deeply difficult conversations. Why he is NEVER offended by what he hears in those conversations – this one intrigued me the most – including how he stays in a place of active respect and curiosity – in situations that would bring most people's blood to the boil. Why he always start with ‘commonality' - and he uses some beautiful language here – essentially beginning any difficult conversation with what he has in common with the other person, before moving to what he has in contrast. Why change never happens in the moment, I think this one is worth hearing a few times – we will never change someone's mind in the moment. The intention instead is to invite them to an exploration (NOT A DEBATE) – and then respectfully sow seeds that they can reflect on later. Why self awareness and courage are muscles we all have – and only by strengthening and using those muscles – can we inspire others to start doing the same. Parents and leaders, this one is on us.As someone who considers himself to be ‘just a rock and roll player' how Daryl has managed to achieve what many movements have not – by first deciding to listen. And finally, Daryl's own personal roadmap to having deeply difficult conversations. A game changing tool for any conversation or situation where the emotions and stakes are at their most intense.References and links mentionedThe Charlotteville “Unite the Right” Rally. My new ebook The Influencer Code. The Mark Twain quote was from The Innocents Abroad / Roughing It.Daryl's book Klan-destine RelationshipsIf you liked this episode, you might also enjoyBob Chapman – Truly human leadership: What it means to lead like everybody mattersHamish Thomson – Why it's not always right to be right Judy Atkinson - 4 Keys to Transform Conflict with Deep ListeningJonah Berger - How to change anyone's mind without having to pushSubscribe to and Review the Inside Influence PodcastThanks for tuning into this week's episode of the Inside Influence Podcast! In part 3, we look at a 1920s congressman from Georgia by the name of William D. Upshaw & the unique impact he ended up having on the Branham Cult. William D. Upshaw was a United States Congressman and revivalist from Georgia who was closely affiliated with William Joseph Simmons during the early years of the 1915 Ku Klux Klan and later with Roy E. Davis as Davis rose to the rank of the Imperial Wizard of the Klan. Upshaw was known as the "driest of the dries" for his position against drinking alcohol, helped turn the State of Georgia into the first "dry state", and almost single-handedly led Simmons and the Klan to victory during the 1921 Congressional Hearings. Upshaw helped promote William Branham's revivals by posing as a wheelchair invalid at Roy Davis' request, advertised other revivalists in the Voice of Healing/Latter Rain revivals, and toured with the Branham campaigns until his death in 1952. How did the exactly KLU-KLUX-KLAN formulate & how much influence did they really have in U.S. politics at that time? What role did Congressman Upshaw have in the KLAN & what sort of influence did he really have on Roy E. Davis & William Branham? Tune in to find out!"

In part 2, we continue in the mid 1920's & look at the formulation of a unique relationship between William Branham & Roy E Davis. Roy Davis was an evangelist from Texas who ordained William Branham into the Pentecostal faith, mentored Branham in his church, and taught Branham to drink poison to gain new converts. Davis was also an official spokesperson for William Joseph Simmons in both the 1915 Ku Klux Klan and the Knights of the Flaming Sword white supremacy groups, and eventually an Imperial Wizard of the K.K.K. Davis fled to Jeffersonville, IN after a series of criminal activities ranging from bank robbery and swindling to bigamy and sexual crimes. Before those crimes were exposed and he was extradited on charges of Grand Theft, Davis planted the church that would become Branham's "Billie Branham Pentecostal Tabernacle" and eventually the "Branham Tabernacle" when Branham's stage persona transitioned to "Baptist". How exactly did famous historical events like the uncertainty of the great depression, the systematic racial tensions of the Jim Crow Era, & Branham's relationship with Roy E Davis helped formulate his underlying worldview & the Cult known as “The Message” Tune in to find out! Daryl Davis, a black man, attends KKK rallies, befriends its members, and through these unlikely friendships, he has influenced over 200 of those men to leave the Klan. In a time when we can’t discuss Coke vs. Pepsi without coming to fisticuffs, Daryl has somehow managed to get men who want him obliterated from the face of the earth…to eventually give up their hatred, ideology and community because of Daryl’s influence. He’s collected the robes and hoods of men like Roger Kelly – the former Imperial Wizard (the president) of Maryland – and intends to open a museum with Klan memorabilia. The central question that has driven his life: “How can you hate me when you don’t even know me?” Daryl is a TEDx superstar, with 4 talks totaling over 4 million views, and lecturer to universities and businesses all over the globe. He’s also a musician (his #1 love) who’s played with Chuck Berry, an actor in one of the best TV shows of all time (The Wire) and an author of Klandestine Relationships. George visits the home of the filmmaker Matt Ornstein in Silver Lake. Matt made one of 2016’s most fascinating, complex portraits, ACCIDENTAL COURTESY: Daryl Davis, Race and America. Daryl Davis is an African-American musician who ends up confronting and sometimes befriending members of the KKK and other white nationalist groups. What could go wrong? George wanted to know more about Matt's background, his feelings about the late Frank Ancona, and some pivotal scenes in the documentary. Accidental Courtesy is now available on Netflix. We conducted this interview in early March before the death of Chuck Berry. Musician Daryl Davis has played all over the world with legends like Chuck Berry and Little Richard, but it’s what he does in his free time that sets him apart. Daryl likes to meet and befriend members of the Ku Klux Klan– something few black men can say. In his travels, he’s collected robes and other artifacts from friends who have left the klan, building a collection piece by piece, story by story, person by person in hopes of eventually opening a “Museum of the Klan”. In Accidental Courtesy, Daryl’s journey takes him to across the country, from DC to California, Arkansas, Tennessee, Missouri and Alabama, from old friends who have left the klan, to friends still active in the organization, including a current Imperial Wizard of the KKK. In an age of digital disconnection, Daryl’s method is rooted in personal interaction and we as viewers reap the rewards. Matt Ornstein founded Sound & Vision Productions in 2006. Since then, Sound and Vision has produced and developed music videos, commercials, and short and feature length films. Sound & Vision produced the Matt Ornstein directed Atlantis in 2012 staring Jason Ritter and the space shuttle Atlantis. It appeared in film festivals including Austin, Orlando, London, Cannes, Santa Barbara, Taiwan and 15 others. Matt is the Creative Director of Sound and Vision, and has directed music videos for artists including Radiohead, Daft Punk, Penguin Prison, Cobra Starship, Ashtar Command, and Harmar Superstar.Follow us on:Twitter: @supdocpodcastInstagram: @supdocpodcastFacebook: @supdocpodcastsign up for our mailing listAnd you can show your support to Sup Doc by donating on Patreon.

Jesse Cohn rebroadcast This week we are re-broadcasting an episode which originally aired in early May 2015 with Jesse Cohn who is the author of the book Underground Passages: Anarchist Resistance Culture 1848-2011, published by AK Press.  In the book, Jesse explores trajectories in literature, cartoons, comics, music, poetry, drama produced at times by and or for or just conspicuously consumed by anarchists in europe, north and south america and asia during that time period.  More info on the book can be found at https://www.akpress.org/ Stay tuned next week for a conversation with an anarchist who has spent a bunch of time in struggle at Standing Rock about their experiences and moving forward with an explicitely anti colonialist approach to resource extraction resistance. But first here are some announcements: "Imperial Wizard" kicks it! To start off with some good news, yesterday February 11th the bloated corpse of KKK Imperial Wizard Frank Ancona was fished out of the Missouri River, apparently after having been there for a hot minute. This piece of human garbage white supremacist is the bonehead who was credited with saying that Ferguson protesters, showing their rage at the police murder of Mike Brown, had awakened a "sleeping giant" in the KKK and claimed unlimited violence in "retaliation". Who's sleepin now, Frankie? In whatever way this death occured, here's hoping that KKK will follow their leader in this ultimate act. Support NC #DisruptJ20 arrestees On January 20, 2017, tens of thousands of people converged in Washington, D.C. for the #disruptJ20 protests opposing the inauguration of Donald Trump. A combination of blockades, marches, and festive demonstrations made it clear around the world that the people do not recognize Trump's authority or support his policies. In response, D.C. police went on a rampage, shooting pepper spray, tear gas, and concussion grenades indiscriminately at protesters, including children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. In one instance, police cordoned off an entire block and mass arrested 257 people, including dozens of North Carolinians. This attack on political dissent is intended to create a chilling effect to keep protesters out of the streets so that Trump can move forward with his divisive agenda. We owe it to the arrestees to support them through the legal process so they can get adequate representation and as fair a hearing as possible. A group of North Carolinian community organizers created the NC J20 Legal Defense Fund to quickly and efficiently support the arrestees from North Carolina. Please join us in donating, and spread the word to everyone who cares about civil discourse and the future of our world. If you are a North Carolinian arrested at #disruptJ20 and are not yet in touch with us, email ncj20legalteam@gmail.com We cannot accept donations in individual's names, but all donations will be used to provide legal support to #disruptJ20 arrestees from North Carolina. Thank you for the support! -Antifa Sacramento Herbal Clinic at la ZAD From comrades at la ZAD, the autonomous occupation resisting the building of an airport in in Notre Dame des Landres outside of Paris, France: We're a group of people who have been working with medicinal plants on the ZAD for the past 6 years. We've made a collective medicinal plant garden and do wild harvesting to stock a small apothecary of dried plants that we distribute at the non-market or out of a house. Some of us do first aid in demos or everyday on the ground, and others do education like plant walks and workshops. In an effort to have more collective autonomy in healthcare, we would like to be able to do consultations, both individual and group. The idea is to have one day a week for free price individual consultations, and another for people to come and learn together, combining different people's knowledge while having access to plants, to figure out common acute illnesses. However, to have enough medicine for 300 people all year long, would mean full time in the garden and probably bitter burnout. Which is why we are asking for money. Just this week a group in solidarity finished building a cabin where we can dry, process, and store plants, and do consultations and workshops. We're able to get access to bulk tinctures that are super cheap (€2 an oz.!!!) and plan to distribute medicine at free or indicated price so that we can make some of the money back and the clinic can fund itself and time can be spend gardening instead of having to beg for money all the time. Money raised will go primarily towards tinctures and dried plants, but also to bottles, tools and machines, and menstrum for making more medicine. Please help us out! Why did a black defense attorney, who fought against segregation in high school and battled racism in the courtroom, volunteer to defend the First Amendment rights of an Imperial Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan? David Baugh is a Richmond, Virginia-based attorney, who, while serving on the Board of Directors of the American Civil Liberties Union of Virginia, volunteered to defend the Klansman Barry Elton Black’s right to burn a cross at a Klan rally. The case would eventually make its way up to the Supreme Court of the United States and set important First Amendment precedent. Baugh believed Black’s ideas were repugnant. But he also believed strongly in the First Amendment and that the freedoms enshrined in that amendment needed to be protected. “As I was growing up, my mother taught me that a principle or a moral isn’t really yours until it’s tested,” he told us. This is the second episode in our two-part series on the topic of “defending my enemy,” which explores why people who vehemently oppose certain ideas nonetheless staunchly defend the right of others to express them. sotospeakpodcast.com Follow us on Twitter: twitter.com/freespeechtalk Like us on Facebook: facebook.com/sotospeakpodcast Email us: sotospeak@thefire.org Call in a question: 215-315-0100
