Let's say you've accomplished all of your professional goals. You're at the top. Business is good. Life is good. What do you do? How about…something completely different? Success breeds success, but it can also stir up an appetite for new challenges. For high achievers, that can lead them to keep climbing after they've pushed that boulder all the way up the hill. For Michele Ezell, the last mile of that climb was the pandemic. Michele and her husband opened Tsunami Sushi, the OG sushi restaurant in Lafayette, in 1999, adding locations in Baton Rouge and in New Orleans over the next two decades. But navigating the restaurant through the pandemic put a new burr in Michele's saddle. In 2021, she and her husband sold the business and Michele started a new chapter in real estate. Today she's a realtor at Keaty Real Estate. That's a big change from running an enterprise with 240 employees to working more or less for yourself and on commission. Michele grew up in Lafayette and says her years in the restaurant industry have given her a solid edge in her new venture. By the time Alysson Bourque became an award winning author, she'd already been a teacher and a lawyer in the Louisiana attorney general's office. Now, Alysson is running Foreword Publicity, a boutique PR firm that provides marketing and promotional services for around 400 authors. Alysson parlayed her own experiences writing and marketing the successful Alycat series to build a playbook for aspiring authors. She and her business partner Lori Orlinsky launched Foreword in 2020 after helping a fellow author shepherd a book to success. They designed a comprehensive line of services that help aspiring and even established authors get their works noticed and sold in the digital marketplace. Alysson is from Lafayette and has published six Alycat books. Out to Lunch Acadiana was recorded live over lunch at Tsunami Sushi in downtown Lafayette. Can we cure autism? Can we grow a human BRAIN in Space? Dr. Alysson Muotri joins me to discuss all these fascinating questions and more. Brain organoids are lab-grown minibrains that mimic structural and functional features of full-size brains. They are created by culturing pluripotent stem cells in a three-dimensional rotational bioreactor, and they develop over a course of months. Brain organoids have emerged as novel model systems that can be used to investigate human brain development and disorders34, as well as evolutionary studies and neural network research Muotri is a Professor at the Departments of Pediatrics and Cellular & Molecular Medicine at UC San Diego, an Associate Director of CARTA, The Center for Research and Training in Anthropology, and Director of the Stem Cell Program, and of the Archealization Center (ArchC) at UC San Diego. He moved to the Salk Institute as Pew Latin America Fellow in 2002 for postdoctoral training in the fields of neuroscience and stem cell biology. His research focuses on brain evolution and modeling neurological diseases using human-induced pluripotent stem cells and brain organoids. He has an additional focus on solving one of life's greatest mysteries: What is it that makes us uniquely human? Our unique social brains are one of the key distinguishing factors between humans and other primates. We are even very different from our closest relatives, the Neanderthals. His work has implications for the generation of human disease models by determining the molecular and cellular mechanisms driving neurological complex disorders, such as autism. It is also creating opportunities for identifying and testing novel therapeutic approaches. Understanding the evolutionary path and the tradeoffs of the modern human brain will likely illuminate the origins of human disease. This was one of these podcasts, where you know that you are connecting with a person on a deeper level. I interviewed Allyson last year for Season 5 and I knew our collaboration would continue in some capacity. I'm bringing her back on the podcast as one of the Guest Speakers for my annual 2-day Virtual retreat: Where Spirituality meets strategy, on November 18th and 19th. You can check the details and sign up for the event here: https://www.dijanallugolli.com/businessretreat Allyson Scammell is a master intuitive business coach, psychic medium, and energy healer. Her mission is to help soul-guided leaders, influencers, and entrepreneurs get sold out with soul clients by amplifying their spiritual gifts, activating their big soul mission, and releasing the energy blocks tethering them down.
