For gaming, for instance, it's important to explore strategies to re-engage users post-install with a focus on maintaining engagement, building loyalty, and also increasing lifetime value.”(14:16-14:32) Hide - Japan & Korea: “What we sometimes see is a lot of collaboration. Let's say a specific game does a collaboration with an anime character, a Disney character, or even specific brands. During these collaborations, game developers want to really push their advertising spend, including retargeting.”(8.41-9.09) Maria - INSEA: "We've seen finance apps really taking off. One of the reasons for that is there is a big push across SE Asia for cashless payments, but we also see a trend in microloans as well. Micro loans are really cool in the sense that they actually empower underserved communities and businesses where traditional banking has not reached them yet."7.22-7.45 Hide - Japan & Korea:  "Before, we saw a lot of smaller, independent gaming companies publishing new games, and an app is a great way to access all different markets around the world. You develop a great game, put it on the Google Play Store and you reach users all around the world, but marketing it takes a lot of knowledge and financial muscles – so we've started to see this consolidation of gaming companies."Mentioned in this episode:Patrick Eichmann's LinkedInMaria Latif's LinkedInHide Cho's LinkedInKate Taganova's LinkedInRemerge

Straight from Tokyo, Japan: an exclusive with Amb. Rahm Emanuel. Before his current posting as US ambassador to Japan, Rahm served as a senior advisor to Bill Clinton, multiple terms in the US House of Representatives, Obama's first chief of staff, and the mayor of Chicago. If nothing else, you can count on his gloves-off, no-holds-barred approach to politics — and he's been no different when it comes to China. Notwithstanding reports that even officials in Biden's NSC have told him to stop “taunting” China, Rahm has been consistently, uniquely willing to say out loud what virtually every other high-ranking US official doesn't. Of course, the ambassador — or, as his desk placard during his chief-of-staff days read, “Undersecretary for Go Fuck Yourself” — may take issue with that framing. His comments aren't “critical,” Rahm says, but “truthful.” This interview covers a ton of ground. On China: How the Biden administration is closing the chapter on “hub and spokes,” what tomorrow's “latticework” architecture will look like, and what Asia-Pacific alliances might look like under a second Trump administration; The future of Japan-Korea, and a peek behind the curtain on how the historic Camp David summit materialized; Rahm's “3 Cs” for China — calm, conflict, charm — and how US foreign-policy leaders should reckon the mutual inconsistencies among those three; And roads not taken by Xi: why Rahm thinks China's entrepreneurial culture has taken a nosedive, and what China's government today is most scared of. And on politics and life: Why “diplomacy” and “politics” are the same thing — and why that's a good thing; Whether the State Department suffers from a personality deficit, and what makes for a good ambassador; How to heal America's body politic — post-Trump, post-Recession, post-GWOT; Why Rahm thinks “quality time” with kids is “BS,” and thoughts on raising kids as a time-crunched politician; And what Rahm thinks the biggest emerging threat to the world is. Hello, Kaiju Lovers! The South Korea leg of the Monster Island World Tour begins with arguably the first true Korean kaiju film: Yongary, Monster from the Deep. Author Neil Riebe, who might very well be this film's biggest fan, pays yet another visit to MIFV's mobile studio in Uber-Moguera to enlighten us with his copious research on the movie. Released in the “Year of the Kaiju,” 1967, it borrows some from Showa Godzilla films but way more from Showa Gamera—complete with a Korean Kenny! Ironically, only the dubbed version of the movie survives. It was once the most expensive film ever made in South Korea (until that record was broken by its remake) and is considered one of the country's most important films, but does it have the artistic merit to warrant such acclaim, or is it truly just MST3K fodder? Since the film had Japanese technicians from Toei and X Productions working on it, our Toku Topic is Japan-Korea relations. Hello from a Cessna! This week, it's just us, on a grab-bag anthropological journey. [2:55] First, Jay unpacks his recent trip to Martha's Vineyard and what he learned about the academic elite on a panel about affirmative action. [23:35] Next, we discuss Season 4 of “Love After Divorce”, in which Korean-American divorcees shack up and speak subpar Korean. [42:30] Then we catch up on the sad saga of former NFL player Michael Oher, who has claimed that the film purportedly based on his life, “The Blind Side,” misrepresented his story and unethically enriched his white "adoptive" family. [55:10] Last, we talk about the U.S. soldier who crossed into North Korea, allegedly because he was “disillusioned at the unequal American society,” and the trilateral summit at Camp David.  On this episode, we ask: Is it wrong to eliminate legacy admissions just as Black students and other students of color stand to benefit? Are people becoming more tolerant of gyopos and their (our) broken Korean?! Will the Michael Oher claims force writers to be more critical of savior stories? What do we make of the U.S. perspective on Asia as a theater of war and deterrence? For more, see: * The panel Jay participated in last Thursday: ‘The Rise and Fall of Affirmative Action' - The 2023 Hutchins Forum * Michael Oher's claims against the Touhy family, and Blind Side author Michael Lewis's subsequent comments defending the family* Coverage of Travis King, the U.S. soldier who crossed over into North Korea, and the recent U.S.-Japan-Korea summit at Camp David * The latest TTSG appearance by K-drama expert Jenny Wang Medina, from July: K-content spectacular Subscribe on Patreon or Substack to support the show and join our Discord community. Kina har falt til kommunismen. Den Røde Arme marsjerer framover med sine kinesiske kamerater. Mao, den nye røde kjempen. USA er truet! Kommunismen er på frammarsj. Angrep i Korea! Under andre verdenskrig invaderte Japan Korea.

We got our systems set up in both our home studio. Mike messaged me to set up our first call so that we can 1. test the setups and 2. he could explain to me what he has been working in the background. I start the conversation by explaining to him why I was late for the meeting. I had a call with Orbitz because they failed to give us our airline credit when we called to cancel our Japan/Korea trip the first time. Then once I explain to Mike why I was late, we had to get through troubleshooting how we can screen share and go over things with each other. Then he goes into his idea for our website. Initial he was wanting to have a call so that he could get some feedback from me on what he has been working on. He needed a bit of direction from me on how to move forward with a couple of different options that he was setting up. All in all, it was a productive call, as it showed us more holes in our game that we need to tighten up. WHO knew that the COVID-19 disease would pave the way to help us improve our process and get back into the swing of things? Then when I got to editing this audio for this Audio Log, I have noticed a couple of things that we can do to improve our sound quality the next time we have one of these calls. US loses key support on China currency

Kia ora and welcome to Monday's Economy Watch where we follow the economic events and trends that affect New Zealand. I'm Rebecca Caroe and this is the International edition from Interest.co.nz. This podcast is supported by Hatch. Self-directed investors should have the world at their fingertips. Kiwi Wealth’s digital investing platform Hatch provides safe, easy and affordable access to the US share markets.  Investors can choose from the world’s most recognisable companies like Apple and Microsoft, and popular exchange-traded funds like the Vanguard Total Market ETF, as well as more niche, thematic funds like cannabis or disruptive technologies. Sign up and browse shares in under 2 minutes, visit hatchinvest.nz for more info. Today this podcast leads with news the US is not getting any international support for its recent anti-China currency moves. In what is a pointed rebuke for the US's China policy, the IMF is standing by its assessment that the value of China's yuan was largely in line with economic fundamentals. But the director of the IMF’s China department said they were encouraging China to pursue a more flexible exchange rate with less intervention. If China agrees, that could undermine the US drive to get China to hold or artificially strengthen its exchange rate with the US dollar. And data in China largely supports a weaker yuan. Their consumer inflation rose in July to two point eight percent, the highest in eighteen months. The rise is largely due to higher food prices with both pork and fruit prices shooting up sharply. Their producer price inflation was lame however falling –zero point three percent in July from the same month a year ago. That is the first sign of factory deflation in more than three years. We have extensively covered the US-China trade war, and mentioned the new Japan-Korea trade tensions and the developing India-China tussle. But there are others worth adding to the trade discussions list. Indonesia and the EU are at loggerheads over Indonesia's support of palm oil and deforestation to grow that industry. Among other retaliations, Indonesia says it will add between eight and eighteen percent tariffs to EU dairy products. And the EU is likely to do battle with Brazil soon too over Brazil's Amazon deforestation policies. In the US, producer prices rose lamely in July, the weakest rise in over three years. Clearly, demand is not putting pressures on prices yet. And mortgage rates in the US have tumbled to their lowest level in nearly three years. But analysts say they are unlikely to be low enough to provide much of a lift to their sluggish home-sales market. In Japan, their June quarter GDP growth came in much better than expected even if it was lower than in the first quarter. They grew at a rate of two point eight percent in the first quarter and one point eight in the second quarter, whereas most analysts thought they would be lucky to get any growth in the second quarter. The yen rose on the data. Growth came from a stronger export sector and a consumption boost ahead of a sales tax increase. [Advert]
Did you know that we have a daily currency newsletter? In it you can find Buy and Sell rates for all major currencies, showing both the average bank rate, as well as the best bank rate. And it shows rates for a top non-bank option as well, giving you key information to hone in on a smart choice. Sign up for this daily newsletter at interest.co.nz/currencies/subscribe_to_newsletter One industry being hit particularly hard by the global economic slowdown and trade wars is vehicle manufacturing. Even though sales were stable to June, the July results are unsettling the industry and production declines are being reported everywhere. It's a trend that will have a huge impact everywhere in global factories. The drop in the iron ore price, which exceeded twenty percent in the past four weeks, is accelerating. It fell another four percent at the end of last week. China's steel industry is turning sharply lower. And China is having real problems delivering on the infrastructure stimulus already approved which is inhibiting its ability to weigh against the trade downturn. The UST 10yr yield is now at one point seven five percent, a decline from this time last week of almost 10 basis points on top of the 23 basis points fall the previous week. Gold is slightly lower today than yesterday, down ten dollars to 1,496 US dollars an ounce. But it is up 53 dollars for the week, or a gain of nearly four percent. US oil prices are up from Friday but are still lower than this time last week. They are now just on 54.50 US dollars a barrel. The Brent benchmark is also lower for the week. The Kiwi dollar is a little softer as well, now down to 64.7 US cents. That is a ½ cent fall for the week and that is probably less than what you might have expected given we have had a 50 basis point OCR cut in that time. On the cross rates we are down a whole cent for the week at 95.3 Australian cents. Against the euro we are down to 57.8 euro cents. That sets the Trade Weighted Index back to just on 69.9 and a third week in a row where we have dropped sharply. Just three weeks ago the Trade Weighted Index was at 72.5, so that is now a three point seven percent overall depreciation. You can find links to the articles mentioned today on our website. The fact that Korea's experience of Japanese imperialism plays a role in present-day Japan-Korea relations is no secret to anyone. Questions of guilt, responsibility and atonement continue to bubble below, and occasionally break through, the surface of ties between two countries which otherwise have much in common culturally and in terms of interests. Addressing many of these complexities, Christina Yi's Colonizing Language: Cultural Production and Language Politics in Modern Japan and Korea (Columbia University Press, 2018) adds greatly to our understanding of imperial experience and its personal, linguistic and political legacies. In this ‘discursive history of modern Japanese-language literature from Korea and Japan' (xvi), Yi forges a narrative which is itself expressive of colonialism's tangled and irresolvable traces. Led nimbly back and forth between the Japanese metropole and the colonies and postcolonies, we enter deep into the worlds of writers considered both 'Korean' and 'Japanese' based in both past and present incarnations of 'Korea' and 'Japan.' If it is difficult to pin any single identity - other than shared use of Japanese language - on these figures and their works, then this very fact is an invitation to broaden our understanding of Japanophone literature beyond today's troublesome nation states. As Yi makes poignantly clear, issues of identity and voice are still shaped by imperial experience even long after the formal end of empire in 1945. Ed Pulford is a postdoctoral researcher at the Slavic-Eurasian Research Center, Hokkaido University. His research focuses on friendships and histories between the Chinese, Korean and Russian worlds, and northeast Asian indigenous groups.

In the decades since the Korean War, a reunified Korea has become an increasingly far-flung dream. Yet 2018 brought a glimmer of hope, with North and South Korea engaging in ground-breaking dialogue and cooperation politically, economically, and socially. Why is this a dream for some and ringing alarm bells for others? Is South Korean President Moon Jae-in really representing the people by advocating for unification? And is re-unification even possible as the political and cultural divide between the nations grows ever-wider? On this Monsoon Podcast, Greg Thomson takes these tough questions to two experts. Lauren Richardson is the Director of Studies at the ANU Asia Pacific College of Diplomacy. Her research focuses on the role of non-state actors in shaping diplomatic interactions in the context of Northeast Asia, particularly Japan-Korea relations. Olga Krasnyak is a researcher in diplomatic studies at Yonsei University's Underwood International College. She holds a PhD in History and has lived in South Korea for eleven years. Her areas of expertise include foreign policy, international relations, and science, cultural and public diplomacy. Over the past five decades, bilateral relations have far surpassed those of the previous sixteen centuries in terms of security cooperation, economic interdependence, and intellectual and cultural exchange, yet the scars of the past continue to challenge efforts toward more fundamental reconciliation and deeper collaboration. What can success–and shortcomings–over the past fifty years of Japan-Korea relations tell us about how best to navigate the future for the mutual benefit of all three countries and for the region?

Part One: What Japan’s Department Stores Reveal About Gender, Culture and Consumerism in Modern Japan

Expanding from Edo (Tokugawa) Era Japanese merchant stores from the 1600s, full-scale department stores emerged in Japan early in the twentieth-century, and were later joined by railway based department stores. This paper discusses department stores as a mirror of 20th century Japan, then looks at them for insights on 21st century Japan. During the 20th century Japan’s department stores were arbiters of culture, taste, and fashion, and a major means through which Japanese were introduced to Western cultures, customs, and styles. Department stores reflect Japan’s early twentieth-century tendency towards emulating the West, the expansion of this in following decades, its renewal in the post-World War II period, the eventual full consumer flowering of Japan in the bubble years, to the late century recession and [first] ‘lost decade’ resulting in the closure of many previously prominent department stores. The talk then discusses 21st century “restoration”–re-openings or renewals of department stores. Japan’s department stores are pivotal in revealing gender in relationship to culture and consumerism. Department store marketing in Japan reflects gender expectations and socialization, at times possibly even when store promotions claim to move away from such constructs. A long term emphasis on catering to female customers within the store, and the more recent development of men’s buildings and styling clinics reveal a great deal about shifting gender ideals. Linked to this, as important employment institutions in the service sector Japan’s department stores reflect shifts or changing attitudes towards gender roles and gender based employment or careers. Based on research during the late 20th century on Japan’s department stores at their peak, and in 2012-2013 during a year of grand openings or re-openings of department stores and other consumer complexes, this talk also suggests Japan’s department stores as a window on Japanese culture and society show the 20th century as one of Japan looking towards the West, and the 21st century as one with a greater focus on Asia and other non-Western countries. Millie Creighton is a Japan specialist and Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of British Columbia, where she serves on the Executive Management Boards of the Centre for Japanese Research and the Centre for Korean Research. She has done extensive research in Japan on department stores, consumerism, tourism, popular culture, gender, minorities, work and leisure, and identity. She was awarded the Canon Prize for her work on Japanese department stores showing how department store marketing reflected nostalgia and the search for community, tradition and cultural identity. She has also published on Japanese department stores and the socialization of gender roles, along with work exploring the Equal Employment Opportunity Law and gendered careers through department stores. She recently received a fellowship to spend the 2012-2013 academic year in Japan at the National Museum of Ethnology, in Osaka, Japan conducting further research on consumerism and Japanese society and culture. In addition to work on department stores, she has been conducting research on Japan-Korea relations through popular culture exchanges, and was one of the founders of the World Association of Hallyu Studies (Hallyu refers to Korean Popular Culture Flows) and is one of the regional presidents.
