Matt Dillon is Jack in The House that Jack Built (2018), a seriously mean movie. Great Horror movies can often be a bummer. Vicious, unrelenting, and cruel films that deny us the happy ending and the victorious fist pump. Many horror fans, and a couple of the podcasters for The Scariest Things in particular, seek these films out. We are crossing bridges too far. No punch pulling. Beware and behold Episode 205: Mean Horror. The caveats associated with the “recommendations” presented in this episode have caveats of their own. These are the films that may make you regret your movie selection decisions. Grim. Brutal. Emotionally taxing. These movies have merit, but these aren’t movies meant to be enjoyed. Quite the opposite, actually. These movies strip your soul and make you ponder the darkness in society. Often, these movies are human-on-human horror, delivering cruelty that only we can inflict on ourselves. Just know we will be following up soon with the salve for the emotional wounds that come with our “Feel Good” episode to help you recover. Here are the criteria we used in picking our movies. The movie does not require compliance with all the listed criteria, but if the movie contains many of these themes, then it would qualify for our selections. Bad things happen to innocent people. Repeatedly. The protagonists often don’t survive the movie. Evil wins. The ending is a bummer. There is little humor in the movie. Typically, people would not describe this movie as “fun.” The movie may be pervasively depressing and nihilistic. There is little hope in the movie. The movie has an emotional impact. Note that this is not a reflection of the quality of the movies. Many of them are very good and critically appreciated. They also don’t need to be gory to be mean, though they often are. The Podcast: Episode 205: Mean Horror With those caveats and warnings: brace yourselves. It’s time for MEAN HORROR. For similar content, check our Bridge Too Far Infographics. Consider yourselves warned. A conversation with M R Narayan Swamy, veteran South Asian journalist and biographer of slain Tamil Tiger supremo Velupillai Prabhakaran. Synopsis: The Straits Times’ senior columnist Ravi Velloor distils 40 years of experience covering the Asian continent, with expert guests. As Sri Lanka approaches the 16th anniversary of the end of its civil war, Ravi speaks with M R Narayan Swamy in this episode. Swamy is the author of several books on Sri Lanka’s now-vanquished militant group, Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, and he talks about his most recent book – The Rout of Prabhakaran. In this podcast, he discusses why Prabhakaran, who once controlled a third of Sri Lanka’s landmass, and two-thirds of its coastline, met his bloody end; the mistakes he made along the way, and the magical hold he seemed to hold on his cadres. Beleaguered exiles living in the belly of Babylon need the reminder that a just, powerful, and good God is calling the shots and pulling the strings. He will not turn a blind eye to those who mock him and his people. This is both reassuring and alarming. Ramos also delved into her position as “a labor Democrat… in a lane of my own,” her “plan to call for a mental health emergency on day one of my mayoralty,” the city's “new Gilded Age” and the battle for a casino license here (“Andrew Carnegie, who wasn't as rich as Steve Cohen is today, by the way he built 2,500 public libraries”), and much more In the latest episode of the pod's series of sitdown interviews with the Democratic mayoral candidates.
Worldliness characterizes Babylon. Worldliness is whatever makes wickedness look normal and righteousness look strange. That is prevalent everywhere you look. To mark the release of Francis Ford Coppola's Megalopolis, a 40-year passion project with a staggering $140 million price tag, we turn our attention to cinema's most audacious, eccentric, and underappreciated visions — the “ugly ducklings” that, against all odds, have found their place in the cultural canon. This episode explores the daring, often misunderstood passion projects of filmmakers who, like Coppola, have risked everything to bring their boldest dreams to the screen. From extravagant failures to cult masterpieces, we examine why cinema desperately needs these fearless auteurs, willing to gamble their careers and fortunes for the sake of their art. We also delve into the curious phenomenon of these “megalomaniac” films — why it often takes decades for them to be properly appreciated, and how audiences can learn to embrace even the most challenging works, regardless of whether they “succeed” on traditional terms. Through these cinematic oddities, we celebrate the vital necessity of creative ambition, the glory of artistic missteps, and the long road to recognition that only the most daring films must travel. Nicolae Ceaușescu was not beloved. His regime was vicious and he treated Romania as his personal wallet: while Ceaușescu emptied the coffers to construct a vast, ornate palace, his people starved. He imposed disastrous population control policies on his country, too, which saw hundreds of thousands of unwanted children left to rot in squalid orphanages. Ceaușescu's rule endured for a quarter of a century - then crumbled overnight. How do dictatorships unravel? In a second episode, Tim Harford partners with HBO's new series "The Regime" to investigate real-life dictatorships and the social science that explains them. Join Mr. Sir and Antheny on this episode of Horror Dork as this week they're discussing one of Belgium's most chilling contributions to the horror genre, Megalomaniac. Known for its haunting narrative and unsettling atmosphere, this film has a unique lens that offers a voyeuristic experience into the darker aspects of human nature and societal issues. Nevertheless, they'll be peeling back the layers of Megalomaniac, examining the intricate storytelling, the psychological underpinnings of its characters, and the film's commentary on power and madness. Expect a blend of insightful analysis, personal reflections, and, as always, their signature Horror Dork humor. Likewise, be sure to share your thoughts, questions, and takeaways about the film. This is your chance to join the conversation and dive deep into the horror. Whether you're a seasoned expert of international horror films or new to the genre, Horror Dork welcomes all. Just the two of us: DIE TRIBUTE VON PANEM: THE BALLAD OF SONGBIRDS AND SNAKES feiert ein weiteres Hungerspiel.

This is Episode 13: Avengers: Infinity War.Topics of DiscussionIn a 2018 article written by Mary Ingram, Thanos is described as a “Sociopath with a heart.”The article imagines a therapy session and intervention with Thanos.“By the time this client told me this about his past, I had already diagnosed him with both Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) and Antisocial Personality Disorder (APD). The first is characterized by grandiosity, preoccupations with limitless power, beliefs in his own special purpose that no one else understands, entitlement, exploitation of others, lack of empathy, and arrogance. “Megalomaniac” fits well here. The second is characterized by repeated law-breaking, aggressiveness, and lack of remorse.”Initial diagnosis would be schizophrenia for his appeared delusional conceptions.Intervention: Talking about the killing his daughter –“So I wonder if your internal unrest stems first from the confusion and unfamiliarity of truly loving someone, and second from how that love (and its loss, at your own hand no less) deters from the triumph of realizing your dream. Does that fit?”Reply: “Love…” he said, voice dripping with indignation. “You're saying that's what's bothering me, what tears my soul and keeps me from sleeping? Love has always been irrelevant,” he paused. “Though, it was apparently useful for gaining the Soul Stone.” His huge shoulders sagged. “My heart broke when I lost her, my little one, my fighter. But, in that moment, I thought it would be worth it, a worthy exchange, one she would have willingly died for if she truly understood me, if she could truly see the paradise I saw, the paradise I was creating.”His narcissism was kicking up again here. I decided to go with it, connect with as much love as was there, but also wrap in his self-admiration.“Long ago you had seen, in this struggling little girl on a dying planet, the fighter, the determination, the defiance in the face of the enemy. You had seen yourself in her. And you raised her to be your little one, even a little you. She became a part of you.” His eyes widened with these statements, some truth clicking into place for him.“You thought, after killing her, after destroying a living, breathing, beautiful piece of yourself, that it would be worth it.” I paused, then asked softly, “Was it worth it?”Outcome:I still don't know if what Thanos felt was love, which requires something fundamentally antithetical to someone with APD: empathy. Did he mourn out of guilt for ending the life of a person he loved and cared for, a person whose happiness and wellbeing he valued? Or did he only feel regret because he projected onto her an image of himself, and his narcissistic pride could not fathom why he might intentionally harm anything that was his? Is empathy, the ability to deeply understand and feel another's emotions, really any different from seeing ourselves in another person?Premise of DiscussionWhat might be psychologically wrong with Thanos? As a confusing and perplexingly complex character, how does it feel to try and imagine diagnosing him. Does it hold up? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Episode 661 has me doing my solo thing again (kinda of) as I share my thoughts on Grimmfest Day Two, which I recorded back in October 2022 as part of their wonderful 4 day festival. In this episode I share my story about the 'no press day' which turned into a 'press day' and where I sat down in the coolest of warehouse rooms to chat with writer/director Karim Ouelhaj to talk about his film Megalomaniac which I had just watched before he and I spoke. Also featured in this episode as sort of translater for Karim, is Steve Balshaw, cheif programmer from Grimmfest. What youll hear here, is the full interview, both before we start, and a few minutes after we start. Enjoy it in all its uncut glory.
Barry, Abigail, and guest Derek Hummel, Sr. (Abigail's uncle and Barry's brother), discuss Make Yourself by Incubus and sample Sap Tap, Mabel's Monster Mangos, AIS Chief, and Smoked Pumpkin Habanero from Hell 'n Blazes Brewing Company in Melbourne, Florida. Three Incubus songs were on Abigail's core musical rotation in high school: Drive, Megalomaniac, and Anna Molly. Sap Tap reminded Abigail of Blueberry Maple Gose by Pompano Beach Brewing Company. Privilege reminded Abigail of the music of RENT (especially the titular song Rent). The “mental piracy” mentioned in When It Comes reminded Abigail of the themes in Dolly Parton's 9 to 5. Listen to Remake Yourself, our resequencing of this album. Up next… Oktoberfest ist Wunderbar by Jimmy Horzen Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe.
Cheers.
