In this minisode, Jennifer reflects on her conversation with author and futurist Jamais Cascio, exploring how today's leaders can rethink resilience, leadership, and empathy in a chaotic, unpredictable world. She unpacks the shift away from outdated models of “fail fast” and constant optimization, instead embracing the power of slowing down, practicing grace, and cultivating humility and flexibility. Jennifer examines how naming what feels incomprehensible can restore agency, why active empathy is essential across differences, and how leaders can ground themselves like deep roots — steady, adaptable, and able to hold space for uncertainty while nurturing the brilliance of others.

Join Jennifer in this thoughtful and eye-opening conversation with author and futurist Jamais Cascio as they explore how to navigate a world defined by chaos, uncertainty, and nonlinearity. Together, they unpack why the old models of resilience no longer serve us, why the moral universe looks more like a squiggle than a straight arc, and how leaders can embrace flexibility, active empathy, and interconnectedness to move forward. With deep insights into the BANI (Brittle, Anxious, Nonlinear, Incomprehensible) framework, Jamais offers a powerful reframing of how we make meaning, foster belonging, and lead with intention in times when nothing feels predictable — inviting listeners to dance with complexity instead of resisting it.

Clare and Steve wonder whether the anxiety that coaches, and clients, feel about the state of the world, leads to lower levels of courageous intervention in our coaching. This episode takes us through a model called BANI, developed by Jamais Cascio to replace VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous), which Jamais suggests is becoming obsolete as the pace of change has become even greater. BANI stands for:BrittleAnxiousNon-linearIncomprehensibleYou can read more about it here: https://thinkinsights.net/leadership/bani/ As always, we encourage you to bring anything to supervision when you feel brittle or anxious and when the situation feels non-linear or incomprehensible. Given the complexities, this may need to be a theme for your supervision for a while.

Sometimes moving forward looks like standing still. So many more people than usual are picking up on big shifts going on, beyond our day-to-day practical things. It can be a floating feeling of unease that signals those bigger picture developments, or specific things that weigh on your mind. Zoom out and look at the bigger picture, at the water we're swimming in. The world feels very chaotic at the moment. A big picture mess, bigger than most of us can map out and much of which is outside of our circle of influence. The newest acronym in town is BANI: brittle, anxious, non-linear and incomprehensible. How do you navigate this and move forward in a constructive way? Especially knowing that (personal) leadership is all about connecting your day-to-day to that bigger picture? How do you find your anchor in all of this, reduce the anxious buzzing energy and the static in your system? ... Sometimes moving forward looks like standing still, for just a moment. ... Processing things beneath the surface. ... Taking a breath and noticing who it is that you want to be. Find more calm and solid ground to step from, and find a place of choice, to show up with resilience, compassion, or curiosity. It helps to connect with other people, knowing you are not alone in this (Hello! We're here), to remind yourself of bigger and better things, and to reconnect with the things you find truly important. Focus on the piece that you can chew, the part that you can play. What helps you move forward in your leadership, to make things happen, do it – it's worth it. Reconnect to your own resourcefulness. We're all swimming in muddy water right now. This is your reminder that you still know how to swim. Referenced: BANI, an acronym made up of the words ‘brittle', ‘anxious', ‘nonlinear' and ‘incomprehensible' was coined by Jamais Cascio, an American anthropologist, author and futurist. In this week's episode, Ricardo talks about the relationship between the concepts of BANI and VUCA. The acronym VUCA for "volatile," "uncertainly," "complex," and "ambiguous" has its origins in the American army during the cold war and sought to explain the constant changes and complexity of contemporary entities, which alter our perception of what is right and what is wrong. The acronym BANI is more recent and was created by anthropologist Jamais Cascio in 2018. The term means "brittle," "anxious," "non-linear," and "incomprehensible" and has become very popular with the pandemic. For Ricardo, despite the acronyms BANI and VUCA having different formats and many saying that BANI is an evolution of VUCA, he shows evidence that the two terms reproduce practically in the same way (despite using other names) the functioning of our society marked by instability, transformation, and inability to predict. The instability causes a feeling of uncertainty, out of control, and anxiety in people. Listen to #5minpodcast to understand better.

Soonish's six-month detour into electoral politics finishes where it started, with a conversation with our favorite futurist, Jamais Cascio. We talked late on November 6—when it was already clear that Joseph R. Biden would win the presidential race, but before the networks had officially called it—and we explored what Biden's unexpectedly narrow win will mean for progress against the pandemic; for the fortunes of the progressive left; and for the future of democracy in the United States.Turning Donald Trump out of office was an enormous and crucial accomplishment, and Biden voters should take a moment to celebrate. But Cascio argues that if Republicans retain control of the Senate (a matter that now hinges on a pair of ferociously contested runoff elections in Georgia), Biden's win will amount to, at most, an "If you find yourself in a hole, stop digging" moment. It will give Biden and Harris the opportunity to tackle the biggest crises facing the country—the newly resurgent coronavirus pandemic and the economic havoc it's wrought. But it won't leave much room to pursue the structural reforms needed to tame white grievance, end minoritarian rule, and get government working again. But there's always 2022. In other words, this election wasn't the beginning of the end of the long fight to save democracy and protect the rights of all citizens in this country. But it might be the end of the beginning. Chapter Guide00:08 Soonish theme00:22 We Did It!01:32 Reality Sinks In04:29 Re-introducing Jamais Cascio05:28 Check-in06:31 Setting the Scene 08:48 The Troubling News10:19 The Depths of our Polarization13:01 Perpetuating Dysfunction17:01 Reviewing Wade’s Post-Election Scenarios19:49 The Pandemic and Conspiracy Theories24:57 Violence Against Democracy27:38 The Weakness of Norms30:51 Mid-roll Endorsement: Big Brains31:49 What Next for the Progressive Left?36:13 Polls Are Left-Wing Astrology37:57 Cliodynamics 40:30 Back to BANI45:34 Fighting Back Against Incomprehensibility48:49 Final Thoughts: The Real Work Is Still Ahead52:11 End Credits and Acknowledgements53:00 “Jaws: Amity Island Welcomes You” from IconographyFind the full show notes and a transcript for this episode at soonishpodcast.org.The Soonish opening theme is by Graham Gordon Ramsay. I'm deep into writing a book with Richard Bach, a security guru from the UK, on the ethical development of #AI technology and have found that there are really not a lot of books offering practical guidelines for ethical thought in engineering. There are lots of books about why it's important and about ethical lapses, so maybe it's time for an Ethics for Dummies (Boy, am I qualified). In my research, I came across Jamais Cascio, a general futurist who does a lot of work with the Institute for the Future (www.iftf.org, @iftf) and who has a lot to say about the subject. Out of a very long conversation I culled these 30 minutes. The rest is going in the book. I imagine your brain will hurt by the time it's over. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/crucialtech/support

Futurists—who sometimes prefer to be called scenario planners or foresight thinkers—specialize in helping the rest of us understand the big trends and forces that will shape the world of tomorrow. So here’s what I really wanted to ask one: Is a cataclysm like the coronavirus pandemic of 2020 the kind of event we should be able to see coming? If so, then why didn’t we do more to get ready? Why has the federal government’s response to the spread of covid-19 been so inept? And above all, what should we be doing now to get our political and economic institutions back in shape so that they can cope better with the next challenge? This April I had the opportunity to speak about all things coronavirus with my favorite futurist, Jamais Cascio. Jamais is widely known for his work with the Institute for the Future in Palo Alto, and he has a bit of a reputation as the “dark futures” futurist—the one who isn’t afraid to dwell on how things could go wrong. It turned out he’d been thinking about many of the same questions, and that he’d been developing a new analytical framework for just such an occasion. It’s called BANI, and it offers new insights into our strange historical moment, when institutions left brittle by years of deliberate neglect now face shattering stresses. In this episode, Jamais and and I tour the BANI concept and discuss how we could come out of pandemic with some new tools for confronting catastrophe.Chapter Guide00:00 Hub & Spoke Sonic ID  00:08Soonish Theme00:22 Futurism in a Time of Pandemic02:03 Introducing Jamais Cascio04:12 Explaining VUCA08:32 Meet BANI10:43 How BANI Fits Our Moment. In a rapidly-changing, uncertain environment, the ability to think constructively about various future possibilities is more important than ever. "Foresight Specialists", "Scenario Planners", "Trend Spotters" and good old "Futurists" provide a specialized service that few businesses, non-profits, and governments have organically -- and fewer still recognize that they need. I'll talk about why today's futurism has more to do with imagining the possible than thinking the unthinkable, why futurist ethics matters more than futurist economics, and whether futurism might just be the best job out there for the easily-distracted generalist.
