As new residents and citizens of Canada, it is so important for us to learn about and become allies for its Indigenous Peoples. First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples have been living in what is now Canada for thousands of years, and they each have unique histories, languages, cultural practices, and spiritual beliefs. We newcomers are now lucky enough to call this beautiful country our home - but we must remind ourselves that we are living on their land. In this episode, I'm joined by Danielle and Jamie-Leigh, who come to us from RAVEN Trust, a not-for-profit that raises legal defense funds to assist Indigenous Peoples. They also have a fantastic online video course called Home on Native Land that you can take for FREE to start your learning. In this episode, we discuss the history of colonization in Canada, including the definitions of Terra Nullius, the Doctrine of Discovery, and the Indian Act. We also speak about the common misconceptions about Indigenous peoples, as well as the ongoing conflict over broken treaties. I ask Danielle and Jamie-Leigh whether Indigenous Peoples welcome immigrants and refugees to Canada, as well as what they think about the term “Canadian”. They also share some of the ways that newcomers to Canada can contribute to ongoing reconciliation efforts. __ In Canada, September 30 is The National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, or “Orange Shirt Day.” The day aims to raise awareness about the Indian Residential School System, where Indigenous children across Canada were ripped from their families, abused and thousands killed. It is also an opportunity to commit to the process of truth, justice, and reconciliation. You can learn more by clicking here. __ Links & Resources: Home on Native Land is a new, free online learning tool that is funny, honest, and accessible, providing a no-risk, comfortable way to understand Indigenous law, Canadian law, and their impact on the nation we call home. The series of 10 x 30-minute modules is the first public education initiative from RAVEN, an organization dedicated to supporting Indigenous rights. Joey, Liam, Jamie-Leigh, carla and Kitty, dive into some magical and grounding ideas and stories. New terrain for some of us is covered, as we hear about what it means to be multiple. The conversation explores how to thrive amid COVID, vicarious joyful healing through community (in particular through youth), and they each choose their favourite word (for now)! This is the last episode of the Grounded Futures Show in 2020, and it’s a joyful close to the year!
Today I’m joined by Jamie Leigh Kreshock who serves as a partner at Cooley law firm, co-chair of the firm's worldwide M&A group, and is a co-creator of The Shift, a mindfulness app dedicated to meditation, alignment, and connection. Together, Jamie and I discuss her career path to becoming a business lawyer, the variety of tasks her job entails, and what life skills she has found to be most valuable to her success. Jamie begins our podcast today by informing listeners that her current career didn’t arise from some masterplan she always had. Instead, Jamie credits where she is today as being a result of her simply always looking to make the “next best choice” in her life. She explains that by giving herself permission to not worry about letting herself down, she was better able to stay in the moment and open herself to each new project and mentor that came her way. As a business lawyer, Jamie works primarily with tech and life science companies that have given her a lot of experience with business management and counseling. In these positions, she fills a number of different roles, such as acting as a coach, investigator, and negotiator. Some of the companies she has worked with in the past include Uber, Tableau, Workday, Dropbox, Levi Strauss & Co., Procore, and more. However, she says that one of the most exciting deals she has ever been a part of was the selling of Lucasfilm to Disney. When discussing the type of work she performs on a daily basis, Jamie tells listeners that when working with businesses, she often tries to act as more of a connector than a leader because companies tend to respond better when they feel like they are a part of the work. She credits this practice to her lifelong belief in teamwork, which she learned from her athletic experience as a rower in high school and college. Jamie explains that her core belief in teamwork is what has led to much of her M&A group’s success because when the group is sharing the same goals and mentality, the work gets completed more efficiently and effectively. Jamie and I then end today’s episode by talking about what a typical day looks like for her. While she explains that there is no “typical day,” she does always make a point to integrate health and wellness into her daily routine, which she says helps her to become the best version of herself. This then leads us to discussing her app, The Shift, which her and her co-creator designed to help listeners begin practicing small habits to improve their mindfulness in a variety of life categories such as love, contentment, sleep, etc. To learn more about Jamie’s app as well as about the daily practices she finds most beneficial to her own work, be sure to listen in to today’s episode! What You’ll Learn in Today’s Podcast: On today’s episode, you’ll learn more about the life and work of Jamie Leigh Kreshock, a partner at Cooley law firm, co-chair of the firm's worldwide M&A group, and co-creator of The Shift, a mindfulness app dedicated to meditation, alignment, and connection. GFM's Music Editor Ivan Orr chats with thirteen year old multi-instrumentalist phenom Justin-Lee Schultz about his upcoming debut project "Gruv Kid" (out 11/13) , his beginnings in music, influences and much more in this up close and personal interview. About Justin-Lee Schultz Born in Johannesburg, South Africa and based in Durham, NC, musical wonder-kid Justin Lee Schultz is the good news you did not even know you needed. He is joy personified. The multi-instrumental wizard who has dazzled audiences on TV shows Harry, Little Big Shots and American’s Most Musical Family, is a prodigy in the fashion of his idols Stevie Wonder and Herbie Hancock. His talent is exceptional not merely because he is young but also due to his melodic, harmonic and technical maturation. While his peers are learning the latest Tik Tok dances and amassing kills on Fortnite, Justin prefers studio time and woodshedding for hours. While social distancing has most people jamming at home with their families, Justin has literally been jamming with his musician father and bassist Julius and 16-year-old sister and drummer Jamie-Leigh. “Music brings me joy because I can express myself when I play. I can also get creative when I’m improvising,” shares the amiable, cherub faced and charismatic 13-year old who has aspirations to one day share the stage with Wonder and Herbie Hancock, as well as Bruno Mars, Charlie Puth, Jacob Collier, Cory Henry and Robert Glasper. Justin, who plays piano, guitar, bass guitar and talkbox, devotes five to seven hours each day to his musical craft. His anticipated Shanachie Entertainment debut will be released November 2020.

Born in Anchorage, Alaska, Hope Griffin was literally born into music. Surrounded by a musical family, she began singing and performing when she was very young. Hope first got turned onto the idea of writing her own music when she received a guitar at age 17. She attended Carson-Newman University and went on to receive a Bachelors degree in classical voice. It was there that her true flair for songwriting developed. Hope’s drive to perform her original works was launched after winning a songwriters contest in college in 2007. She eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she began introducing her angelic vocals and folky lyrics into the music scene. In 2018, she toured nationally in the the Northeast, Midwest, and Northwest regions and released her latest single “Carousel”, a hauntingly beautiful ballad which garnered much praise from both her local community and abroad. She can currently be seen on tour in a variety of combinations, most notably as a Folk/Americana duo with her cellist Jamie Leigh. Her free spirited personality and ability to tell beautiful stories through song make her a true force to be reckoned with – and a hard excuse to miss!

Hope’s drive to perform her original works was launched after winning a songwriters contest in college in 2007. She eventually moved to Asheville, North Carolina where she began introducing her angelic vocals and folky lyrics into the music scene. Hope quickly began to rise as an Asheville favorite. In 2012, her debut single “Hanging In The Balance” made international radio play. She was recognized in regional publications such as the Herald-Journal, The Mountain Xpress, and The Daily Times. She appeared on WNC television, and began touring all over the Southeast USA. In 2014, in an effort to expand her acoustic sound, she teamed up with NJ born cellist and Asheville transplant Jamie Leigh Bennett to create a dynamic guitar/cello blend of original sound. In 2016, 2017 & 2018, she consecutively snagged both best “Singer-Songwriter” and best “Acoustic/Folk Band” titles in Western North Carolina though community votes. Together, their combined fusion of her silky vocals and Jamie Leigh’s deep, rich cello lines has made for a listening experience quite unlike any other. Hope’s “in your face” style of ballad writing, as well as the duo’s reputation for playing fresh versions of songs that span through the decades has made them popular amongst a wide range of age groups. Hope continued to wow audiences and stretch the musical boundaries by switching from soulful ballads to high-energy blues with ease. Her 6 original song EP, entitled “Say What You Will” released on February 6th, 2015 to a sold out show at Isis Restaurant & Music Hall in Asheville, NC. Her third song on the album titled “A Fisherman’s Life” was awarded “best song” in WNC in 2016. Each song on the record offered a diverse style and hook worthy of its subject matter, but all were linked with Hope’s angelic voice, catchy beats, and poignant imagery. The album was one that fans of folk music and singer-songwriters had been waiting for since Hope first began mesmerizing her audiences, and was the perfect exhibition of her extraordinary talent. Riding on the wings of the success of 2015’s album, Hope jumped back in the studio to record a larger project titled “Where the Soil & the Stars Meet”, which released on October 31st, 2016. As a strong follow up to her previous release, Hope’s album—her first LP—was as eclectic and as unpredictable of a musical journey as those who fell in love with her debut might have expected. Song after song, Hope defied convention, leading her audience by the hand through honest reflections of true love, a broken heart left devastated, a chance meeting with strangers, to the celebration of a long life well-lived. Constantly blending genres, the very essence of Hope’s trademark style constantly remains: Her lyrical quality of capturing the simplest of life’s moments and rendering them profound reflections on the emotions that unite us all. A haunting and always evolving collection of ballads, “Where the Soil and Stars Meet” peered into the soul of an artist whose fingers remain firmly on the pulse of the curious odyssey in which we all find ourselves. At the conclusion of 2017 (and just in time for the season), Hope released her latest project “And the Lights Will Shine” – a 6-song collection of holiday tunes. Reflective of her usual folk flair, the EP was well received by all. As expressed by Bill Kopp from the Mountain Xpress: “With ‘And the Lights Will Shine,’ folk/Americana artist Hope Griffin bravely takes on a clutch of holiday classics (adding an original of her own) and creates a fine, distinctive record in the process.” Since then, Hope has far from slowed down. Jamie has a RIDONKULOUS STORY!... My guest today is the lovely & hilarious model and actress, Jamie Leigh Thornton. Recently she packed up her life as a student at University of Kentucky to pursue a career in LA as a model & social media influencer. Since then, she's been featured in Maxim Magazine and Sports Illustrated, and has amassed over 155k followers on Instagram. Many people assume this career path is simply fueled by looks, but Jamie's outgoing personality, humor and atypical body type really separate her from all the other pretty faces out there. During our conversation, we talked about how she makes money on Instagram, dealing with brands and sponsors, hanging out with celebrities, what her friends and family back home think about her newfound success, what really goes on in her Instagram DM's, and of course she answered the question she gets asked by strangers every single day, "Are they real?" This week, COMPOSER Jamie Leigh Sampson talks about her 1 Track, CONCEALED IMAGININGS.
This week we took a look back at the year’s M&A market, which brought some big wins and some low lights. Equity this week was Katie Roof, Alex Wilhelm, and Jamie Leigh, a partner at Cooley, who joined us to go over the year’s receipts. What to look for ahead? Leigh mentioned big box stores, Roof brought up automakers, and we also kicked over the idea of non-tech companies buying smaller firms that are not merely talent plays. (Instead, this about investments in long-term efforts to build in-house innovation instead of stapling on a startup to one division or another.) Also: How many deals didn’t get done in 2017 that got close to being done? More than you might have thought, and, according to our guest, that fact means that we could see more M&A in the first quarter or two in 2018. (All that and Intel-MobileEye came up, Amazon-Whole Foods got a mention, Target-Shipt got a mention and more!) This is the second, and final 2017 wrap-up episode we have for you. Starting next week, it’s back to the regular show! Catch you all next week.
