Speaker: Professor Mark Roe (Harvard Law School)Chair: Felix Steffek (University of Cambridge)Abstract: The notion of stock-market-driven short-termism relentlessly whittling away at the American economy's foundations is widely accepted and highly salient. Presidential candidates state as much. Senators introduce bills assuming as much. Corporate interests argue as much to the Securities and Exchange Commission and the corporate law courts. Yet the academic evidence as to the problem's severity is no more than mixed. What explains this gap between widespread belief and weak evidence?Bio: Mark J. This week I had the distinct pleasure of visiting with former Chief Justice of the Delaware Supreme Court, the Honorable Leo E. Strine, Jr., Of Counsel, at Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz. Judge Strine and I discuss the intense focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) standards and the pressures on corporate directors and managers occasioned by the Caremark decision and its progeny, among other developments. These initiatives have particular relevance to businesses many of our clients and listeners manage, as they often involve environmentally sensitive chemical products and manufacturing operations. We discuss Judge Strine's thoughts on implementing ESG programs by building upon existing corporate compliance programs and how best to allocate compliance responsibilities between corporate boards and senior management. Louis Lehot, Partner and Business Lawyer at Foley & Lardner LLP, hosted a live-stream webinar for startup founders and investors in 2023, a year marked as the era of generative AI. New software, including ChatGPT, DALL-E, Midjourney, and Bard, collectively created one of those rare "This is going to change everything!" moments in Silicon Valley and beyond. For startup founders and investors, the question was: What did all of this mean, and how did we navigate the opportunities ahead? Here are some of the key takeaways from their discussion:* The secret to turning your technology into a product is evaluating business challenges and then choosing where to apply AI. Great startups address a problem worth solving.* Right now, AI startups are beating #BigTech companies in very narrow situations because they are laser-focused on their target, and where they demonstrate the ability to deliver a solution to an identified problem (rather than being technology in search of a problem).* There is a lot of experimentation happening in the broad AI space, and predicting what is going to work best is difficult.  It is all so new and happening so fast.  With very few exceptions, technologies in the market are not yet operating at the enterprise scale.* For many early-stage generative AI companies, they are offering very bespoke solutions to customers that are not scalable or repeatable for other customers without significant customization.  This will make it hard to get to $10 million of annual recurring revenue, a key benchmark for raising a Series B round.* If your company is looking to incorporate more AI into your current offerings or get it on your roadmap, you will need internal talent that really understands the technology and how to operationalize it. Many existing businesses will need to pivot to incorporate AI while avoiding disruption to the core products and services that are selling. This space is fully in the hype cycle, and we are only in the very early innings of the AI revolution.  What will happen when investors realize that it will take years to get to scale up?Find the video recording of the webinar here.Discover more about Louis Lehot and explore additional professional insights on his website https://louislehot.com. Carefully formed supply chain contracts can protect human rights and save lives. With the EU laying down rules for companies to respect human rights and the environment in global value chains – how can businesses do this in practice? Social Impact Pioneers Sue Maslow, Patrick Miller and Olivia Windham Stewart are part of the Responsible Contracting Project - collaborating across industries, communities to tackle the challenge of embedding human rights protections into international supply chain contracts. If you are wondering how to act on the EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) or looking to protect your business from breaches in your supply chains, this podcast is for you. The concept of popping a few lines on human rights due diligence into a supplier contract seems like a simple idea – but the devil is in the detail. Contract law is complex, time consuming and expensive if done badly. Contracts that exert unreasonable commercial pressure or place unrealistic expectations on suppliers don't help anyone. During this conversation Sue, Patrick and Olivia explain how templates of internationally recognised human rights due diligence principles have been developed to help businesses and those in procurement. Check out the links below to see how they have combined their legal and human rights expertise to explain how the principles of human rights due diligence can be embedded directly into business supplier contracts to enhance effectiveness and improve human rights outcomes. Wherever your organisation is on caring for those in your supply chain take a listen. Social Impact Pioneers: · Sue is Co-Founder and Partner of Antheil Maslow & MacMinn, LLP. She is Vice Chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section Working Group to Draft Model Contract Clauses to Protect Human Rights in International Supply Contracts; Chair of the American Bar Association Business Law Section's Corporate Social Responsibility Law Committee and Senior Legal Advisor to the Responsible Contracting Project. · Patrick is the Founding Attorney of Impact Advocates, focusing on international commercial dispute resolution through arbitration, mediation and litigation. Patrick is a Legal Advisor to the Responsible Contracting Project and advises companies on a range of ESG issues, including establishing responsible supply chain frameworks. · Olivia is Deputy Director of the Responsible Contracting Project; Deputy Director of the Business and Human Rights Law Program and Senior Fellow at Rutgers Law School, New Jersey, USA. Questions to ask during a discovery call: What kind of law do you practice? What is your experience working on an issue similar to mine? What is your success rate? What does it look like to work with you? How do I communicate with you in case of queries? What is your payment structure? What service models do you offer? What is your turn-around time? The Millionaire's Lawyer - JP McAvoy

A Little About Ronnie Deaver:Ronnie Deaver is the CEO of NoBull Marketing, a lawyer-exclusive marketing agency that specializes in generating leads and helping lawyers convert more potential clients into paid retainers with Google My Business, Google Ads, and Sales TrainingIn that capacity he created the first 100% guarantee in the industry, offering to pay back everything - even the advertising budget a client has spent - if he can't make it profitable. That offer quadrupled the client base of NoBull Marketing in three months and it's still going strongIn this episode of The Millionaire's Lawyer, JP and Ronnie Deaver discuss:Ronnie had called in love with Lawyers and how they seem to want to support people at a poor moment in their lifeHe noted that there was a void for lawyers advertising and gaining attraction to clienteleRonnie Deaver did the data tracking and noted that on 200 campaigns 60 - 80% of the call volume is attributed to Google My BusinessHaving Google ads is a better place to try and promote yourself because when people are on Facebook, for example, they are not there for your services - you have to convince them they are neededIf you go to Ronnie, you are hiring a professional to do the Grunt Work that you wouldn't like doing for yourself. Its notes black magic, its not complicated, but it is tedious Add in hundreds of keywords, for ex:  a drug crime lawyer is not just drug crime. It's also marijuana, meth, Xanax, and cocaine..Ronnie Deaver states that a significant and overlooked aspect of the ranking factor is the Google Reviews, they are critical.Reviews don't have to be from your direct client, it can also be anyone you gave legitimate value toAll roads eventually go to Google My Business, and people will look at that profile before deciding to make contact for even just a consultation at first Ronnie Deaver explains to JP that you need to prove to Google that their clientele and users would be happy with where they are directing their trafficRunning a business is like running a marathon, it is not a sprint. Play the long game, especially with the upcoming recession. You have to be able to run the business how you would like to run the business, you can not do it in a way that makes you miserable because then you won't end up doing it and your business will dieConnect with Ronnie DeaverWebsiteFacebookLinkedInConnect with your host, JP:TwitterInstagramFacebookWebsiteShow:LinkedInEmail:  jpmcavoy@conductlaw.comPhone:  1-833-890-8878THANK YOU TO OUR SPONSOR:Conduct LawWebsite
