Moreover, consumers' embracement of Levi's new product lines and their enhanced DTC experience affirm the positive influence of these strategic decisions. CEO Michelle Gass, while discussing their strategies, stated the following on the earnings call: "We're seeing traction already, Oliver. The DTC is up 8% in the quarter, 25% on a two-year basis, the momentum is actually accelerating quarter-on-quarter. As it relates to women, DTC is up 14% overall, up 19% in the U.S. And that's both tops and bottoms. So bottoms up total company, DTC bottoms up 13%, women's tops up the 13%, total company. So we're seeing traction in both. And it's only going to grow from here." Looking to the future, Levi Strauss outlined plans to diversify its product categories, bring more non-denim products to the market, and enhance operational efficiency. These strategic moves align with their overarching agenda. They aim to leverage high-growth regions such as Asia, enhance margins, and guide profitability and cash flow towards sustainable growth. She started a few months before the pandemic began and has been riding a wild frenzied wave ever since, savoring every seam, learning all that she can about this skill from patternmaking to couture tailoring and everything in between. Ella lives in Oakland, California where she works for a nonprofit foundation that's a part of Levi Strauss & Co. She is a first-generation American, a Black-Filipinx maker raised by a single mother, and a believer in the power of strong women. Lisa WoolforkLisa Woolfork is an associate professor of English specializing in African American literature and culture. Her teaching and research explore Black women writers, Black identity, trauma theory, and American slavery. She is the founder of Black Women Stitch, the sewing group where Black lives matter. She is also the host/producer of Stitch Please, a weekly audio podcast that centers on Black women, girls, and femmes in sewing. In the summer of 2017, she actively resisted the white supremacist marches in her community, Charlottesville, Virginia. The city became a symbol of lethal resurging white supremacist violence. It's by Jeff Rumage and found on builtin.com. Here are some of Mr. Rumage's remarks about the 15 public companies he covers. “1. Cisco (CSCO) Cisco has donated $494 million in cash and in-kind contributions to community programs, including its career training program. The company has also committed to investing $150 million for technology education and technology modernization at historically Black colleges and universities, and it has provided technology equipment and donations to Ukraine, too. Cisco plans to reach net zero carbon emissions across its value chain by 2040. 2. Allbirds (BIRD) Allbirds, a direct-to-consumer shoe and apparel company, uses natural materials like wool instead of synthetic materials. A certified B Corp, it pledged in 2021 to cut its carbon footprint in half by the end of 2025. 3. Warby Parker (WRBY) Warby Parker has been selling prescription glasses and sunglasses online since 2010. A certified B Corp, the company donates a pair of glasses or sunglasses for every pair sold. 4. HP (HPQ) HP reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by 59 percent compared to 2015 levels, and it plans to reach net-zero emissions across its entire value chain by 2040… More than 110 million ocean-bound plastic bottles have been retrieved and reused in HP's ink cartridges. 5. Intel Corporation (INTC) Intel derives 93 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources, and it aims to reach 100 percent by 2030. The company expects to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040. 6. Qualcomm (QCOM) Qualcomm, which manufactures semiconductors and wireless technology, has pledged to reach net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040 and reduce power consumption in its flagship Snapdragon products by 10 percent every year. 7. Salesforce (CRM) Salesforce announced in 2021 that it had reached net zero carbon emissions across its value chain and that it purchases enough renewable energy to match its electricity usage… The company has also committed to donate $200 million to racial justice causes, spend $100 million with Black-owned businesses, and double its Black leadership in the U.S. 8. Stitch Fix (SFIX) Stitch Fix, an online clothing retailer that makes personalized outfit recommendations, is more than halfway to meeting its goal of using environmentally preferred materials in its private label products by 2025. 9. Microsoft (MSFT) Microsoft has pledged to go beyond carbon neutral and become ‘carbon negative' by 2030… It also advocates for human rights, teaches in-demand digital skills and provides rural communities with affordable broadband access. 10. Google (Alphabet) (GOOG) Google has been carbon neutral since 2007 and is now working to transition to carbon-free energy sources by 2030. Since 2014, Google has invested more than $90 million to achieve equity in computer science and higher education, more than $400 million to create economic opportunities for communities of color and more than $45 million to support racial justice organizations. 11. adidas North America Athletic apparel brand Adidas (ADS.DE) strives to make its operations carbon neutral by 2025… The company also aims to use environmentally preferred materials in 90 percent of its products by 2025. 12. Johnson & Johnson (JNJ) Johnson & Johnson, the manufacturer of pharmaceuticals, medical devices and consumer health products, gets more than half of its electricity from renewable energy sources. The company aims to be completely powered by renewable energy sources by 2025 and expects its operations to be carbon neutral by 2030. 13. Lemonade (LMND) Lemonade is a digital insurance company that has shaken up the industry's business model. After covering the cost of claims and operational expenses, Lemonade distributes any leftover money from your insurance premium to the nonprofit of your choice. 14. Levi Strauss & Co. For example, 74% of executives want to come back to the office three days a week or more. Only 23% of employees want the same thing. Holiday Replay: When it comes time for Harmit Singh to brief Levi Strauss & Co.'s management team regarding the latest performance results, Levi's CFO will often share a briefing document that features a front page bearing the heading “What's Working and What's Not.” “It's more difficult to understand what's not working, and it's the ‘What's not' that helps us to determine the areas on which we have to focus to take the business to the next level,” explains Singh, who notes that the “front page” is carefully rendered by Levi's Financial Planning  & Analysis (FP&A) crew – a team of forward-looking financial professionals whose past feats of analytic derring-do have included helping the jeans maker to foresee the leap from “skinny Jeans” to the baggie look among young consumers. It's here among Levi's crack team of number crunchers that the “what's not” often becomes exposed, and it's here where a new mind-set – one that keeps consumers top-of-mind and favors stakeholders over shareholders – is already visible. And just as soldiers are known by the things that they carry, so, too, are finance professionals known by the metrics that they wield – and at Levi's, these metrics are increasingly consumer-driven. Explains Singh: “As the pivot to the consumer mind-set happens, the metrics that have become critical are: How many new customers are we signing up? What is the repeat rate of the customer? And, What is the lifetime customer value?"

If they have the capital sooner, they would be executing because entrepreneurs, by and large, are doers.” -Maggie Spicer   When it comes to social enterprise investing, raising awareness among investors and entrepreneurs is essential.  Impact investing is a general investment strategy that seeks to generate financial returns while also creating a positive social or environmental impact. Investors who follow impact investing consider a company's commitment to corporate social responsibility or the duty to positively serve society as a whole.  The bulk of impact investing is done by institutional investors, including hedge funds, private foundations, banks, pension funds, and fund managers.  Yet, a range of financial service companies, investment platforms and investor networks now offer individuals an opportunity to participate.  One major venue is microfinance loans, which provide small-business owners in emerging nations with startup or expansion capital. Women are often the beneficiaries of such loans.     In this episode Justine talks with David Cooper, Senior Partner and Donor Advisor of DAF Capital and Maggie Spicer, Partner and COO, DAF Capital. Donor-Advised Funds (DAF) are one form of investment vehicle.  David and Maggie explain impact investments and charitable capital investments through Donor-Advised Funds. Since the pandemic, DAF Capital along with 86Fund raised $120,000 to help 119 businesses.  The 86Fund is a 501c3-sponsored, DAF-backed philanthropic venture fund that provided grants to U.S.-based restaurants and restaurant-adjacent small businesses (farmers, wine + beer makers, bakers, fishermen/women, etc.) impacted by the global pandemic and/or climate change.  In this episode, David and Maggie also talk about frameworks that have the same goals such as Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG); Sustainable Development Goals (SDG); and Justice, Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion (JEDI-nope, not the Star Wars movie!).
