Today I chat with Angela Blackwell, the first blind person to hike the Pondo Trail in South Africa with her guide dog, Jaydee. Angela discusses how Jaydee helped her regain her confidence and independence after her diagnosis of Retinitis Pigmentosa resulted in significant loss of visual acuity. Hiking the Pondo Trail, a four day hike on the East coast of South Africa became a challenge that Angela set for herself as a way of raising awareness that blindness does not mean living small. She is also using the project as a fund-raiser for the South African Guide-Dogs Association for the Blind. Follow Ange and Jaydees experience on the show and connect with them online: Instagram: @Angel on the Blindside. Please also support their fundraising at https://www.backabuddy.co.za/campaign/paws-on-the-path Image Description: A woman sitting on a large piece of driftwood on a sandy riverbank beside a white dog. The woman has short brown hair and light skin, and she is wearing a light gray T-shirt and denim shorts, barefoot, resting her chin on her hand and facing to the right with a calm, thoughtful expression. The dog is sitting close to her left side, wearing a collar, and also facing to the right. A wide, calm river stretches behind them, with green, tree-covered hills on both sides and a pale sky with light clouds. I had the extreme pleasure of sitting down with the filmmakers and producers behind the newly released film Clika. The film is executive produced by Jimmy Humilde and features stars such as Eric Roberts, Master P, and Peter Greene. It also marks the film debut of its lead actor, Jaydee. While this is his first acting role, he's no stranger to performing—he's the lead singer of the group Herencia de Patrones.Clika has been unofficially described as the Latino 8 Mile. I chopped it up with writer/director Michael Greene and writer/producers Ski-ter Jones and Sean McBride. The buzz and energy surrounding this film are palpable. These breakthrough filmmakers were kind enough to walk us through their journey, sharing how this indie project evolved from conception to execution and ultimately to a national Sony release.Their passion for storytelling is infectious and carries a childlike exuberance. Michael Greene, Ski-ter Jones, and Sean McBride are a fun, driven group of creatives clearly on a trajectory toward becoming Hollywood power players—and we've got a front-row seat to their launch.
Send us a textOne decision changed everything for JD and Paul of PJK Properties: stop chasing every tactic and go all-in on one. We dive into how they chose rent-to-rent HMOs, built airtight systems, and partnered with Manchester and Salford councils to house people who need safe, stable homes. The result? A portfolio that cash flows, a mission they're proud of, and the confidence to say no to bad deals. We unpack the first months when nothing seemed to stick, how they leaned on training, templates, and community coaching to get contracts right, and the moment a single deal unlocked momentum. You'll hear the exact objections they face with landlords, why they don't pay deposits, and how switching to rent in arrears transformed their cash flow. They share the house they gave back—and how that decision sharpened their standards. We also talk about the power of referrals, credibility checks, and why property is a people business long before it's a spreadsheet. There's a deeper layer here: aligning profit with purpose. Their social housing model supports tenants coming from probation or domestic violence, with support workers and council partners in the loop. That mission fuels persistence, builds trust with landlords, and creates steady demand. As they look ahead, rent-to-rent remains the cash-flow engine while they refinance existing assets and move into ownership for long-term equity. If you're overwhelmed by strategies, this conversation shows why focus beats FOMO, systems beat hustle, and relationships beat cold outreach. Hit play, take notes, and decide what you'll commit to for the next 12 months. Send us a textJay Dee Graber sits at a fascinating intersection in the poultry industry as president of Michiana Equipment. Serving northern Indiana's substantial Amish farming community, he bridges traditional agricultural practices with modern poultry production requirements while navigating his own journey from reluctant family business participant to determined second-generation leader.Growing up on his father's broiler farm, Jay Dee initially swore he'd never join the family equipment business. Yet by 2018, he found himself taking on leadership responsibilities, learning crucial lessons about financial management and people leadership. When COVID hit in 2020, his father stepped back, leaving Jay Dee fully at the helm of a business that provides essential feed, water, ventilation, and electrical systems to poultry producers. What makes Jay Dee's perspective particularly valuable is his deep understanding of Amish farming operations. Contrary to common stereotypes, he reveals that Amish farmers generally embrace technology that improves efficiency while maintaining their family-centered approach to agriculture. The typical 20,000-bird operation fits perfectly with both their farm size (usually 40-60 acres) and practical considerations like feed delivery and egg pickup schedules.Perhaps most remarkable are Jay Dee's insights into what he calls "unconscious sustainability" - practices that have been standard in Amish communities for generations but are now trending in modern agriculture. From solar power adoption to maintaining diverse farm operations with gardens and multiple animal species, these methods reflect a long tradition of self-sufficiency. Equally impressive is the community response when disaster strikes, as recently demonstrated when neighbors immediately stepped in to run a farm after its owner was hospitalized following an accident. For emerging leaders, Jay Dee offers straightforward advice: build relationships, help others (even competitors), and stay adaptable. As the poultry industry faces increasing challenges from biosecurity threats to market volatility, this willingness to collaborate and innovate becomes essential for success.Want more leadership insights from across the poultry industry? It's DILLA TIME This month's special is about Jay Dee aka J Dilla, a Detroit hip-hop producer's whose work is so prolific and influential his MPC sampler is in the Smithsonian. Dilla worked with hip-hop and R&B greats - Q-Tip, A Tribe Called Quest, Busta Rhymes, The Roots, The Pharcyde, D'Angelo, Common, Madlib and made his own signature rhythm that others copied - he used a sampler like no one had before. Through his unique methods of playing with layered timing, rhythmic expectation, polyrhythm, samples stretching and feel and his ability to bend time-signatures to his will, Dilla changed how music moves, and made Dilla Time (a term coined in the 2022 book of the same name by Dan Charnas). We explore his production work, solo music and the legacy of his final album from 2006, released three days before he died - Donuts - a sample psychedelic beat tape of melancholic beauty and a magic trick of sampling that serves as a towering and influential creative statement. B. Cox returns with a look back at Common's landmark fourth album, Like Water For Chocolate as it turns 25.After his breakthrough sophomore album 1994's Resurrection and his acclaimed third album 1997's One Day It'll All Make Sense, the Chicago emcee picked up his roots and moved to New York City and linked up with Questlove, The Roots and other creatives who were working within the Electric Lady Studios. There he collaborated with the aforementioned, D'Angelo, super producer DJ Premier, musicians such as keyboardist James Poyser, famed bass player Pino Palladino and horn legend Roy Hargrove among others. The catalyst for this collaboration, however, came from producer Jay Dee (bka J Dilla) who produced the lion's share of the album's tracks. The album was widely acclaimed up on release. Patreon.com/thequestionshiphop questionshiphop.com youtube.com/thequestionshiphop Originally broadcast on May 24, 2021. Simply put, Tre Hardson aka Slimkid3 is a legend. Hip hop was forever changed in 1992 when his group the Pharcyde emerged onto the scene with their classic debut album 'Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde.' The group brought a decidedly animated and imaginative element to their songwriting and presence on the microphone – and Tre definitely stood out with his distinct melodic voice; you could really even say that a lot of these rappers who sing owe a bit to Slimkid3. The Pharcyde's second album Labcabincalifornia sported a darker sound (and early contributions from the great Jay Dee aka Jay Dilla) that reflected the frustration the group was going through with both the industry – and internally. Tre did one last album with the group (2000's Plain Rap) before embarking on a solo career that also has seen him team up with DJ Nu-Mark from Jurassic 5, Ozomatli, and occasional reunions with various members of his Pharcyde brethren – and today they are back at it (as a trio), touring the world and possibly poised to release new music soon. In this Can't Knock the Shuffle classic, we break down stories behind the following songs: "Groupie Therapy" (Pharcyde 'Labcabincalifornia', 1995) "Trust" (Pharcyde 'Plain Rap', 2000) "King" feat Diamond D and K-Natural ('Slimkid3 & Nu-Mark', 2016) "Life is Love" ('Liberation', 2002) "Pick It Up" feat Dillon Cooper (TRDMRK, 2019) "4 Better or 4 Worse" (Pharcyde 'Bizarre Ride II the Pharcyde', 1992) The Questions Hip-Hop: Instagram Sean Kantrowitz: Instagram Slimkid3: Instagram

On this episode of One Song, Diallo and LUXXURY break down The Pharcyde's “Runnin',” the track from the legendary hip-hop group that brought new flavor to the West Coast sound in the ‘90s. They dive into the group's introspective lyrics about vulnerability and personal struggle, how they met and collaborated with soon-to-be legendary producer J Dilla (at the time known as Jay Dee), and how Dilla's genre-reinventing beatmaking style – blending old school hip-hop and bossa nova samples – helped The Pharcyde popularize the alternative hip-hop movement.
