The groundbreaking 1960s band The Doors, named for Aldous Huxley's The Doors of Perception, achieved incredible acclaim and influence, ultimately serving as a key group in the development of psychedelic and progressive rock. At the center of it all was complex front man Jim Morrison, who died in 1971 at only 27. Yet, as author Paul Wyld reveals, despite Morrison's reputation as a lewd, drunken performer, he was a full- fledged mystical, shamanic figure, a secret teacher of the occult who was not merely central to the development of rock music, but to the growth of the Western esoteric tradition as a whole. Wyld looks at the mystical works that inspired Morrison, including Kurt Seligmann's The Mirror of Magic, Colin Wilson's The Outsider, and the writings of Nietzsche and Jack Kerouac. Drawing on Morrison's lyrics and poems, his intimate writings, and the recollections of friends like photographer Paul Ferrara and Doors keyboard player Ray Manzarek, the author makes the case that Morrison was not simply a superficial dabbler in the occult but an actual secret teacher transmitting knowledge through the golden thread stretching back to Egypt and Thoth-Hermes. There's no way your Thursday wouldn't be complete without a fresh episode of the Real Life podcast to wrap up your week, would it? Of course not. Thankfully, the gang was back with a fresh episode of Real Life. The guys kicked off the podcast with a random collection of sports, including the recent passing of Jellybean Bryant and Wanye's question about why he was unaware that Jellybean played in the NBA. After a quick Googling on the topic, it turns out that the answer is a lot sadder than anyone expected. Sticking with sports, Tyler wanted to know what events are missing from the summer Olympics and whether the boys could improve the games with some new events. As expected, every potential event the fellas recommended was completely ridiculous and 1000% not likely to happen. Changing gears, Tyler read a bunch of Gen-Z words that were added to the dictionary, and the boys had to guess what all of these words meant. As expected, fellas in their late 30s and early 40s were completely lost on basically everything, making everyone in the studio feel incredibly old once again. Looking around the local sports scene, the discussion turned to how the Riverhawks and Stingers have found a way to inspire Edmontonians while the Elks still struggle to get people through the door. Outside of the team obviously being awful, there has to be a way to get the city more engaged with a team that used to be hugely popular for decades.

Theoni Bell has been fascinated with Our Lady of Champion for a decade. Her historical fiction novel The Woman in the Trees: a novel about America's first approved Marian apparition was published in 2021 by TAN Books. In 2024, Theoni was added as a “witness” to the Libellus requesting permission from the Vatican to initiate the cause for the canonization of the seer Adele Brise. Theoni has spent years sifting through archival documents and corresponding with members of the shrine staff, historians in Belgium, and descendants of the community in which the apparition took place. She collects the stories of people who have experienced miracles — even minor ones — through Our Lady of Champion's intercession, in hopes that these will draw people to the shrine to encounter Our Lady there. This whole venture started in 2013 with two answered petitions after a visit to the National Shrine of Our Lady of Champion. Theoni also writes and speaks about baby loss. Her baby loss picture book Jellybean: a baby's journey to God came out April 2024 from Holy Heroes. She sells baby loss memorial prayer cards and prints on Etsy.
