InstagramSpotify BioDare to make a difference, be a leader in the crowd.” These words, lyrics from Lynn Houston's latest musical release, serve as a poetic call to action—an invitation to step forward with courage and create meaningful change. Though each person is a thread in the broader tapestry of society, it is often easy to forget the power and responsibility of the individual to uplift others and foster unity. Throughout history, society has seen cycles of oppression and privilege, progress and regression. In what Houston refers to as her “final frontier,” she is now using music as a platform to amplify unheard voices, promote social consciousness, and inspire compassion and courage in everyday life. For Houston, courage has been the throughline of her life. Raised by a family that instilled a strong sense of self, she quickly learned that success required both education and dedication. Even with a solid foundation, she knew she was different—an outlier who would need to carve her own path rather than conform to societal expectations. Leaving her hometown, she set out across the United States as a one-woman show, forging connections, expanding her creative expression, and discovering new artistic directions.Eventually settling in Santa Monica, she transitioned into still photography, capturing iconic figures such as Mick Jagger and Diana Ross. From there, she made an unconventional leap into aviation, defying industry norms to become a successful airline captain in a male-dominated field. After retiring, she founded A Different Point of View in 2011—a nonprofit dedicated to empowering youth within the juvenile justice system to believe in themselves and take control of their futures. In 2017, Houston embarked on yet another creative chapter, this time in music. She began performing at venues like SoHo in Santa Barbara, CA, and her artistic evolution accelerated through training at Berklee College of Music and the discovery of Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs). These tools became her creative laboratory, allowing her to experiment freely with sound, much like a scientist mixing and discovering new elements.Throughout all of these experiences, it was bravery and commitment that allowed her to realize her dreams, while compassion and empathy fueled her desire to uplift others. Now, music has become the vessel through which she shares this mission with the world. In Leader in the Crowd, Houston sings:“Time is ticking, life is moving fast,Who knows but today…Just might be your lastIs this the way you want it,Is this how it's gonna be?Gotta find the courageTo create the dreams that you see”These lyrics are powerfully underscored by the soulful echo of Diana Purim (daughter of Flora Purim), whose background vocals repeatedly urge, “You gotta wake up.” The song challenges listeners to reflect: Are they truly making their moments count? Or simply drifting in complacency? With time being finite, the message is clear—there is no waiting to become the person you were meant to be, or to step into your purpose.Layered with background chants and crowd sounds, the track sonically mirrors chaos, while spoken-word interludes cut through with precision and emotional clarity. Musically, it blends hip-hop, R&B, jazz, and orchestral elements, creating a spacious yet intense listening experience. These creative decisions were elevated by the mix of renowned LA producer and sound engineer Lynne Earls, and mastering by Jett Galindo. Houston also reflects on the joy of recording at the world-famous Village Studios in Los Angeles with an all-female production crew—a rare feat in the male-dominated music industry. For Houston, the culmination of these efforts—working with aligned, socially conscious collaborators and creating with courageous intention—made Leader in the Crowd a powerful artistic and personal milestone. But her journey doesn't end there. Houston believes that everyone has the potential to make a difference. Each of us faces a choice: remain complacent, or point our hearts toward our dreams, stand for unity and justice, and be unafraid to lead.Stay connected with Lynn Houston on social media for updates on her upcoming track, Get Up, slated for release this summer.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Annabel Lee over Zoom video!Los Angeles-based alt-rocker Annabel Lee shares her debut album Mother's Hammer!Written mostly while in quarantine in 2020, Mother's Hammer gave Annabel Lee time to reflect on preceding years which were some of the hardest of her life. After a cross-country move to pursue music, Lee found herself in challenging situations, from struggling with addiction and running out of money to ending an eight year relationship that left her without a place to live. It was from this profound hardship that an incredibly intimate, expansive body of work emerged. Diving into the subject matter, Lee shares, "Some of the stories on the album relate to being strung along by vampires in the industry. Being mistreated and taken advantage of. Fumbling around trying to fall in love and staying numb at every turn. Grieving the loss of friends, gone much too soon, and trying to see the silver linings but losing hope. Being 3,000 miles from anyone that actually knew me. It was a very dark and informative time."Over 11 compelling tracks, Annabel paints a realistic portrait of the human experience that never hesitates to confront even the most grim aspects of her life. Conversely, Annabel matches these darker emotions with joyous moments, shining a bright light on womanhood with gritty, fiery energy as she finds her own strength and begins to fully trust herself. The music meets her where she is, putting both her artistry and humanity on full display like never before. All songs were written by Annabel Lee, and produced and recorded by Justin Glasco. It was mixed by Ryan Lipman and mastered by Jett Galindo at Bakery Mastering. All vocals are also by Annabel Lee and instrumentation is by Lee and Glasco.Annabel got her start as the acoustic opener for hardcore shows around New England and since moving out to Los Angeles, has quickly built a die-hard fan base as she fills clubs around town including the famed School Night showcase, the Echo, Gold Diggers, the Satellite, and the Hotel Cafe. The alt-pop singer/songwriter Mothica also cites herself as a fan, where she posted a TikTok of herself front row at an Annabel Lee concert with the caption “I love it when women…” cut to Annabel thrashing onstage to her song “Ugly Son of a Bitch.”Mother's Hammer, the raw, ethereal debut album by Annabel Lee is available everywhere now!We want to hear from you! She plays a wide variety of the blues & swing, old school folk, and boogie-woogie. She has a dynamic songwriting style - ranging from a funky tune with socially conscious lyrics to a mournful slow blues, from a pop-edged ballad to an uplifting swinging number, and from barrelhouse boogie to jazz. Her seemingly sweet and soft-spoken appearance often leads to surprise when hearing her rich, resonating voice that goes from a whisper to belting with intensity. Her piano style is much more lyrical and imaginative than simply repeating so-called “licks”, though she knows when to toss them in the mix for a thrill, and is always in the groove. And what draws the audience closer to her heartfelt, honest music are her genuine passion, and the originality that comes from within. In November 2021, She released her debut album on the VizzTone Label with Booga Music of internationally-known bluesman, Kenny Neal. Though Kenny had met her in Memphis, and during his tour in upstate New York, what got his attention to sign her to his label was a video of hanna's performance on a Curtis Jones' song “Decoration Day Blues” that she recorded in her U-Haul storage room. Debuted at #13 on Billboard's US Blues chart, since its release, the album has been played all over the U.S. and the world. But words, and even recorded samples, cannot fully convey the essence of Hanna's ''music — to really understand it and feel it, you have to hear her perform live. Her music continues to evolve and reflects the very moment she is living in — the happenings and vibe in the room, the reactions of her listeners, the musical contributions of each band member, and even the events of the week in the world, all combine to inspire a new and different performance of each song. As is the case with all true blues performers, she works from and in the tradition of the music while bringing her own stamp of creativity and originality to it. Her music tells a story, sometimes an age-old one, but she tells it in her way from her perspective, which in turn informs and expands our experience.
