An authoritarian ruler moves to invade a smaller country and take it for himself. People around the world rally to that country's defense. European and American leaders grapple with how to stop the invasion and prevent a wider war. But this isn't Russia and Ukraine in 2022. It's Italy and Ethiopia in 1935. Rachel Maddow and Isaac-Davy Aronson explore what we can learn from the very different choices made decades ago, when the world faced a similar challenge.Featuring:Deborah Cohen, the Richard W. This week, historian and author Deborah Cohen discusses her book Last Call at the Hotel Imperial: The Reporters Who Took on a World at War. Cohen is joined in conversation by Daniel Greene, President and Librarian at the Newberry Library. The following conversation originally took place at the American Writers Festival on May 15, 2022 and was recorded live. AWM PODCAST NETWORK HOME More about Last Call at the Hotel Imperial: A prize-winning historian's "effervescent" (The New Yorker) account of a close-knit band of wildly famous American reporters who, in the run-up to World War II, took on dictators and rewrote the rules of modern journalism. They were an astonishing group: glamorous, gutsy, and irreverent to the bone. As cub reporters in the 1920s, they roamed across a war-ravaged world, sometimes perched atop mules on wooden saddles, sometimes gliding through countries in the splendor of a first-class sleeper car. While empires collapsed and fledgling democracies faltered, they chased deposed empresses, international financiers, and Balkan gun-runners, and then knocked back doubles late into the night. Last Call at the Hotel Imperial is the extraordinary story of John Gunther, H. R. Knickerbocker, Vincent Sheean, and Dorothy Thompson. In those tumultuous years, they landed exclusive interviews with Hitler and Mussolini, Nehru and Gandhi, and helped shape what Americans knew about the world. Alongside these backstage glimpses into the halls of power, they left another equally incredible set of records. Living in the heady afterglow of Freud, they subjected themselves to frank, critical scrutiny and argued about love, war, sex, death, and everything in between. Plunged into successive global crises, Gunther, Knickerbocker, Sheean, and Thompson could no longer separate themselves from the turmoil that surrounded them. To tell that story, they broke long-standing taboos. From their circle came not just the first modern account of illness in Gunther's Death Be Not Proud—a memoir about his son's death from cancer—but the first no-holds-barred chronicle of a marriage: Sheean's Dorothy and Red, about Thompson's fractious relationship with Sinclair Lewis. Told with the immediacy of a conversation overheard, this revelatory book captures how the global upheavals of the twentieth century felt up close.

The role of foreign correspondents, especially during times of war, can be extraordinarily important not only in shaping public perceptions and strategic decisionmaking at the highest level, but also in informing on revolutionary shifts in social norms, as these reporters find themselves bringing their personal lives into the public and the newsmaking process into their own relationships. In Deborah Cohen's kaleidoscopic ensemble biography, "Last Call at the Hotel Imperial," the reader is given unprecedented access to the personal lives of legendary American reporters John Gunther, H. R. Knickerbocker, James Vincent “Jimmy” Sheean and Dorothy Thompson as they reported on the rise of fascism in Europe and the gradual impending horror of what was to come. In her conversation with Robert Amsterdam about the book, Cohen, who is a history professor at Northwestern University, discusses the incredible intimacy of how her subjects experienced the cultural changes that were taking place in the background in Europe in the 1920s and 1930s. Cohen describes it not only as a geopolitical history told through these colorful and glamorous journalists, but a book of personal history, of people discovering that they could not live the way that their parents did, and how the actualization of these new personal freedoms interacted with their careers.

Youth Culture Today with Walt Mueller

At the end of John Gunther's classic 1949 book, Death Be Not Proud, about the death of his 17-year-old son Johnny from a brain tumor, Johnny's mom offered a few pages of her thoughts regarding her son's death. Her words hit me hard as they remind me that my children are a gift from God. She writes, “Today, when I see parents impatient or tired or bored with their children, I wish I could say to them, But they are alive, think of the wonder of that! They may be a care and a burden, but think, they are alive! You can touch them – what a miracle! You don't have to hold back sudden tears when you see just a headline about the Yale-Harvard game because you know your boy will never see the Yale-Harvard game, never see the house in Paris he was born in, never bring home his girl, and you will not hand down your jewels to his bride and will have no grandchildren to play with and spoil. Your sons and daughters are alive. Think of that- not dead but alive! Exult and sing.”

In the 1930s, the biggest American media celebrities were four foreign correspondents: Dorothy Thompson, John Gunther, H.R. Knickerbocker, and Vincent Sheehan. They were household names in their heyday, as famous as their novel-writing Lost Generation counterparts, F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway. They helped shape what Americans knew about the world between the two World Wars by landing exclusive interviews with the epic political figures of their day, including Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco, as well as Trotsky, Gandhi, Nehru, Churchill, and FDR. But they also went beyond state press releases and listened closely to dissidents in European nations and heard alarming reports of violence against these authoritarian regimes. And they made waves at home and abroad. H.R. Knickerbocker was the only foreign reporter whose dispatches Mussolini bothered to read. Goebbels called Knickerbocker an “international liar and counterfeiter.” John Gunther shot to fame with the book Inside Europe (1936), arguing that “unresolved personal conflicts in the lives of various European politicians may contribute to the collapse of our civilization.”These reporters warned their readers that the dictators wouldn't be satisfied with the territories they conquered. They vehemently objected to policies of appeasement, and they predicted the coming of the Second World War, putting together the stories they covered—the Italian invasion of Ethiopia in 1935, the Spanish Civil War that broke out the next year, the 1938 German annexation of Austria, and the carve-up of Czechoslovakia in the Munich Agreement—to make startlingly accurate judgments about what would come next. The story of these four journalists – and how they changed the news media irrevocably – is told by today's guest Deborah Cohen, author of Last Call at the Hotel Imperial: The Reporters Who Took on a World at War. We see how these figures told the major stories of the day as reporters but also shaped them as opinion columnists and book authors. Contests over objectivity in the media aren't new to the 21st century but age-old. These conflicts about taking sides heated up to a boiling point in the 1930s. Were reporters eyewitnesses or advocates? How far should they go in trying to shape public opinion? We'll get into all that and more in this episode.

Ep 28 of the Always Better than Yesterday Interview Sessions was with UFC fighter John Gunther ( @followmeimblind ) This was a fascinating interview. One that I'd been dying to have since I saw John on the Ultimate Fighter. John has a unique mindset and character. I really liked hearing his perspective on pain. “Learn to enjoy pain and life will be wonderful” It was also great to hear how he reflects on and learns from defeat and keeps moving forward. We touched on confidence, how how much you learn and grow as a human in the octagon, recovering from injury and just loving what you do. This was a really enjoyable conversation with someone that competes on a worldwide stage. I hope you find great value and insight in the talk. Head over to Facebook | YouTube for the full video. Much love Ryan

Had the one and only Sean Daugherty on the podcast last night.  He came to Buffalo with Grappling Industries and really did a great job promoting the tournament.  Sean came and gave a free leg lock seminar at WNYMMA and Fitness last night.  We talked about the last time that GI was in town and how cool it was that Dave Aguzzi faced all the criticism from the las tournament and made this year’s iteration much better.    We talked about where Ray was, Sean’s life, his military service, training with Ken Shamrock at Lions Den, talked about Strong Style MMA.  Touched on how he but for a twist of fate would have been in Alex Steblings spot in Pride history.  Of course, we touched briefly on Conner McGreggor Kahbib.  Of all the things we talked about though we had to talk about the never-ending battle between Emil Fisher and John Gunther and what the deal really is with the Alpaca’s.    I have had the opportunity to talk with a lot of guys and girls and the podcast, but this was a fun one.  I got to roll with the guest, buy him dinner and hang out.  It was good to see someone who actual is what that project on social media.  Thanks for the interview, seminar and the rolls.

Hello, this is Mystic Babylon Open Mike Poetry Podcast recording from near the Haight in San Francisco. Today we have only one poet besides me, but we have a special treat today. We have Judith Barnett who works at the Beat Museum in the North Beach area of San Francisco near City Lights Bookstore where the Beats came from. The URL of the Beat Museum is: http://www.thebeatmuseum.org . I met her at the open mikes that they hold there regularly. I have one proverb to state as we approach the end of this intro that I hope you consider worthy. Why do we fight battles in Iraq where more people die, when we could fight battles on Cancer right in the U.S. where fewer people would die? As you might notice in Judith’s poetry she talks about her fight with Cancer. Let’s hope that she wins. I remember reading a book when I was about ten years old about cancer called “Death Be Not Proud”, by John Gunther. I recommend it. Judith has a book coming out hopefully in February. It is called “Critics and Other Lovers”. Please by it if you can. You will probably be able to buy it through the Beat Museum.
