John Manuel Arias is a queer Costa Rican-American poet and writer who has lived in the U.S. and in Costa Rica where, as he reports, he shared a house with his grandmother and four ghosts. His debut novel, Where There Was Fire, burst onto the scene in August 2023. Set in Costa Rica, this story follows several generations of women in one family — mothers and daughters — alternating between their lives in the 1960s and the 1990s. The novel focuses on one major event that reverberates and haunts each generation: a fire that burnt down a banana plantation and in which a father goes missing. This single event tears the family apart and gives rise to ghosts that keep the characters pushing for answers. Who started the fire? What happened to a missing husband? To a dead mother? Where There Was Fire is about love and secrets, reconciliation and redemption, all focused around the biggest question of all: What is the price of a banana?

John Manuel has been working in the commodity grain market for decades and sits to talk with Joni about the over status of the industry. How does grain transportation and inflation in general impact food costs and food purchase patterns. The benefits of proso-millet crops on water usage and natural resources.“The best thing you can do for water conservation is foods that use less of it to grow.”How the industry is working on improving crop yield to benefit the farmer so it makes the growing of millet a profitable venture for farmers. For animal feed crops, an egg from a millet fed chicken will require about 12 to 18 gallons less water than a corn fed chicken. Put another way, if chicken farms switched to millet feed, they could decrease water usage equivalent to 2% of the Missouri River fresh water source every year.Talked about the hardiness of the millet crop when it comes to environmental extremes. The largest impact will come from consumers when they communicate desires with the grocery stores they shop.  Make personal choices about what you eat and those actions will speak volumes. To learn more about John and Dryland Genetics, please visit https://www.drylandgenetics.com.

In this episode of OutBüro Voices featuring LGBTQ professionals, entrepreneurs, and community leaders from around the world, host Dennis Velco chats with John-Manuel Andriote, freelance health/medical-focused journalist for the likes of The Atlantic, Psychology Today, and others and author. In his early journalist career, he focused his reporting on HIV/AIDS and then broadened it to the wider health and medical topics. Over the past 10 years, he has focused on psychological and emotional resilience. He is currently training to become a personal resilience coach to help others build their own resilience. John shares that in 2005, after reporting on HIV/AIDS, he received an HIV positive diagnosis. This rather shocking diagnosis caused John to reflect on his life, the challenges, and assessing his ability to reach a positive outlook thriving and surviving life's storms. Exploring his own resilience made him keenly interested in the topic. Stonewall Strong is not a self-help book perse, but rather a collection of personal stories that demonstrate resilience so that the readers may connect with authentic stories and glean insights. In our engaging conversation, John discusses his book titled Stonewall Strong that focuses on resilience told through his own personal story from a Journaling archive stretching over 30 years to one on one interviews with notable gay figures like Bishop Eugene Robinson, Larry Kramer, Congressman Barney Frank, and others from many walks of life. We chat about how members of the LGBTQ community face many obstacles and challenges others don't yet still find ways to be resilient and thrive. John found that we need to tell our own stories in our own ways versus allowing others to define us. Too often still today LGBTQ people are bombarded with the negative message that they are not worthy, they don't belong, they are not loved for who they are. One must overcome these messages that can become deeply ingrained causing emotional, mental, development, relationship, self-loathing, and potential substance abuse issues. Resilience is reframing that message internally from a state of the victim to a mindset of a survivor, a hero for overcoming. This mindset shift is very important because negativities attract negativity likewise positive attracts positive. I share my personal story of having to put boundaries in place with people who after years of trying never accepted me for who I am and vehemently kept throwing mystical dogmatic religion in my face. It was difficult, but I had to distance myself from them out of love and respect for myself. John developed a stand-alone course on developing resilience which he offers for free. John-Manuel Andriote is an award-winning author, journalist, speaker, and communication consultant. Since 1983 he has written about health and medicine, LGBT issues and popular culture. He has reported on HIV-AIDS for more than 30 years. He joins the show to talk about reframing and rewriting the story of gay men, how we can improve our ability to be resilient, and his newest book Stonewall Strong: Gay Men's Heroic Fight for Resilience, Good Health, and a Strong Community.   TAKEAWAYS: [1:38] John identifies a hero and role model as someone that lives out their values to be the best they can be, and helps raise others up in the process. Through his own work he loves shining a spotlight on those in the LGBTQ movement that display these qualities of compassion, courage and awareness of belonging to a bigger community, such as Reverend Bean and Ginny Apuzzo. [5:29] John came to terms with his own HIV diagnosis in 2005 while he was living in Washington D.C. as a journalist. The experience became the catalyst for thinking about resilience. [9:02] While apps and online sites provide an opportunity to meet others, they have downsides like isolation and loneliness when we are reduced to superficial and shallow interactions. Part of a healthy life is having real connection with others. [13:18] in the mid 1990’s, John saw the crystal meth epidemic move eastward from the west coast. [16:18] People look to numb themselves and dissociate from uncomfortable feelings like trauma and shame. Often times the addictive behavior is driven from loneliness and a desire for true connection. [19:03] Cases of abuse are consistent in men that continue to engage in high risk sexual activities. When we focus on addressing people’s trauma rather than getting caught up in judging them, we can speak about things that matter and keep them safe. [23:36] Resilience is a skill, and we can learn to be more resilient. It’s how we frame our story, and how we tell ourselves what our traumatic experience means. NOT!).

Welcome to Season 2, Episode 8 of The Poetry Gods! We realized many of the poetry podcasts we listened to were wildly dull. Hyper self-serious, self-agrandizing, and totally exclusive to high academic circles. That's not the way the three of us know or love poetry. It's also not the way any of our homies and idols dig into this craft. Poets are fucking hilarious. Joyful and absurd, with stories for days. We hear them at the bar, during their banter at the reading. We wanted to hear it in a podcast. So we made one. On this episode of The Poetry Gods, we talk to John Manuel Arias about Costa Rica, writing a book, and much, much more. As always you can reach us at emailthepoetrygods@gmail.com. JOHN MANUEL ARIAS BIO: John Manuel Arias is a gay, first generation Costa Rican/Uruguayan poet and crepe-maker raised in a DC ghetto when it was the murder capital. His poems have appeared in the James Franco Review, Rogue Agent Journal, Red Paint Hill, the After Happy Hour Review and others. His debut collection of poetry, “¡I'D RATHER SINK–!” is forthcoming from Red Paint Hill Publishing. He currently lives in San José, Costa Rica with his grandmother and four ghosts.
