In 1836, rumors of gold in a muddy river on the west shore of Lake Michigan near modern day Green Bay, Wisconsin, spurred the creation of what would become the City of Kewaunee. The arrival of a railroad in the late 1800s led to increased shipping in the area, and in 1880-81 two long piers were built at the entrance to the harbor. In the years that followed there were a number of reconfigurations of the piers and lighthouses in the harbor. Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse, Wisonsin. (Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse) Jake Heffernan (Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse) In late 1930, a car ferry collided with the south pier and badly damaged a small lighthouse tower that stood adjacent to a fog signal building. The damaged pier was repaired and a square brick lighthouse tower was added on the roof of the fog signal building, giving the lighthouse the appearance it has now. The City of Kewaunee was granted ownership of the lighthouse in 2011. Thanks to the assistance of the nonprofit Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse, much restoration has been carried out in the past decade. The guest in this episode, Jake Heffernan, is the acting president and historian for the Friends of the Kewaunee Pierhead Lighthouse.

Aisha K. Staggers had her first major publication, an album review, in The New Haven Register while just a sophomore in high school. Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. She previously served on the Executive Board of the CT Young Democrats' Women's Caucus, an avid campaigner and has remained active in politics and public policy. Ms. Jones is an activist, feminist, and a former collaborator with Paisley Park. Laura “La La” Key is a powerhouse vocalist, livestreamer and active Real Estate professional. She has managed a major live-streaming App and teaches courses in social media promotion. When she is not busy making joke memes, cussing out politicians or cooking amazing gourmet dishes, she travels the globe recording and performing original music with her artist husband. Most recently the pair traveled to Rio de Janerio, Brazil and Porto, Portugal to perform vocal parts in the studio for their latest album release. On the September 9, 2023 episode of State Of Things With Aisha, Jill & LaLa, Aisha and Jill talked about: – Jim Jordan receives scathing response from Fani Willis – Trump aide Mark Meadows loses bid to move Georgia election case to federal court – Special counsel to indict Hunter Biden in gun case this month, DOJ says – The US Supreme Court took away abortion rights. We haven't talked about horses for a while, and they're definitely one of our favorite creatures, so today we're off to Wisconsin, to talk about one of the most majestic animals in the equine world:  The Friesian.  Native to Holland and beloved by film producers everywhere for their striking looks, there's a very long history on these animals, and they have gorgeous movement to boot.We met up with Nicole Porter Salvato and her husband Dan on their beautifully-remote hilltop ranch in western Wisconsin.  Prairie Sky Sanctuary has beautiful trees, mushrooms in the woods, gorgeous pastures filled with butterflies and flowers, yaks, thoroughbreds, and Friesians, of course.  And though the blue above seems to go on forever in the daytime, it's a dark-sky location that's hard to beat, for all of you astronomy buffs out there (And they have yak cheese, so we knew we were truly in Wisconsin). In talking to an epigenetics expert (among the other bases of knowledge Nicole has in her very interesting brain), you would think our conversation today would be about the yaks she raises, and the groundbreaking genetic research she is doing (No, Sunny Hill Ranch, today we're focusing on horses.  Sorry about that.).  Nope!  Those elegant, prancy, high-stepping ebony horses are the thing today. On a related but unrelated note:  As we've been binge-watching TV series this year, one of our many topics of conversation with Nicole and Dan left us wondering about a concept from Beforeigners (thank you, HBO).  When does an organism that we artificially bring from one time or place into another something different?  If you bring an Old Norse person (read “Viking”) into Oslo in the current day, is he still a Viking?  Even if he shares the same basic genetic material as what's there now, are the modern-day newbies something different altogether?  Will they react the same way as the ones on the ground?  And if we apply this question to our obsession with artificial insemination today, are the animals we create in this way still the same animals?  No one knows for sure yet.  But it's worth a thought or two and a rousing intellectual discussion.  Or twelve, if you were on the mountaintop at Prairie Sky that day.  Sheer bliss. Links:https://www.prairieskysanctuary.org/ https://www.prairieskysanctuary.org/new-page-1 https://www.psr.onl/ https://fhana.com/ https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8332130/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASr0n5LnWnU https://www.cdc.gov/genomics/disease/epigenetics.htm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valkyrie https://modernnorseheathen.wordpress.com/2017/11/06/what-types-of-horses-did-the-vikings-ride/ https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/08/160808123849.htm https://www.ancient-origins.net/history-ancient-traditions/viking-dogs-followed-their-masters-valhalla-008944 https://skjalden.com/viking-farm-animals/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/agriCulturePodcast)

This man has earned a reputation in the outdoor industry as one of the NICEST people you'll ever meet. And on account of this, he's becoming a mentor to me. I'm confident that you can listen to this episode and see why. A truly great talk.  In this chat, Paul Mentions his father's appreciation for Aldo Leopold. I started reading Leopold's work afterward and now I'm (mostly) obsessed with. I believe westernized cultures are at a point where they would be wise to read it.  Start with "A Sand County Almanac". For those of you who've read it, contact me and let's chat about it.  Happy Hunting, Steve "Take Care of Each Other. Take Care of the Earth."

Former players Brady Quinn and Matt Chatham dive right into a review of Week 5's best action, the surprises, the disappointments, and the underrated performances, then they make their way into preview-mode for a huge upcoming Week 6 slate.  Yes, Tom Brady is back with the Patriots...but the Bengals aren't the Browns.  But are they still the Bengals of a year ago...or are they about to fall off?  Can New England put some distance between themselves and this potential AFC playoff contender?  In a battle of strength-on-strength, the Cowboys and the Packers meet in Wisonsin for a classic meeting of great run offense and great run defense.  Somebody is going to surge to the front of the NFC -- there's a good chance one of these two teams is near the top when it's all said and done, with much to be learned this weekend.  The Eagles finally took a step back, but they have a chance to recover some ground in the NFC East against a Redskins team anxious not to lose ground to those surging Boys.  And then those darling Falcons --the team in the NFL you only take lightly if you're OK with dropping a game-- travel across the country once again to face the formidable Seattle Seahawks.  The Falcons have had a murderer's row on their schedule in the last several weeks -- can they survive another in one of the league's toughest venues?  Dan Quinn leads his group against his old team in another game of great NFC importance.    Raiders-Chiefs with a ton on the line?  'Nuff said. All this and more in a loaded week of NFL action... Enjoy!
