The field of retina has made significant strides when it comes to diversity, equity, and inclusion since Julia A. Haller, MD, penned her inspirational 2015 JAMA Ophthalmology editorial, Cherchez la Femme. The ever-growing body of research on this topic stands as a testament to her commitment to understanding the gaps in diversity, particularly in terms of gender differences in leadership positions. Adrienne W. Scott, MD, and Steven Sanislo, MD, sit down with Dr. Haller to discuss the state of affairs in retina and just how far we have come—and how much is left to do.  How are we doing in terms of representation on the podium? How does diversity among retina specialists affect patient care? Why is it important to look for diversity when designing an ad board or conference agenda? What drove Dr. Haller to pursue a career in a traditionally male-dominated field? Check out this episode to hear what Dr. Haller has to say.

There's something primal about watching food shows on TV. Or any food show. Even restaurants that have a glass pane through which you can watch the chefs in the kitchen doing their thing. It engages your attention while they ham it up. No that's not a pun.The business of someone setting about chopping up ingredients and turning them into masterful creations of art–truly subliminal and soul stirring to watch on the couch, while you eat instant noodles, unmindful of the irony.I had no better example than when my partner and I had bought the kids in our apartment building a ton of firecrackers for Deepavali. They had great fun on the street. Suddenly, at 8pm, total silence. They were gone. Bags of fireworks lay unattended on the sidewalk, the starter candles drooping. And where had all these pre-teen children gone? To watch Masterchef on TV.For many of us, watching cooking shows or reading about food is a form of escapism. It transports us to far-off lands and exotic cuisines, allowing us to experience new flavors and dishes without leaving home. But there's more to our love of food literature than just the escapism it provides. Food brings people together. Reading about it gives us a sense of connection. Sharing a meal is a fundamental human experience, and reading about food allows us to share in that experience–even vicariously. By reading about the foods of different regions and countries, we gain insights into their customs, cultures and traditions. So much history and indeed, social anthropology there. On this podcast—after months of dealing with authors who have written about the ravages of war and politics and poetry's melancholic joy—today I feel as happy as a predictable late light TV talkshow host who is about to cook Christmas turkey with Martha Stewart.Except that my guest today is closer to Julia Child, the famous author of cookbooks and host of TV and radio shows in the US. You might remember that Meryl Streep played Julia Child in the movie Julie and Julia. My guest is Karen Anand, one of India's best known food personalities. Author of some 30 books and host of TV shows since the mid-1980s Karen has brought class to the industry in India. She is widely respected and—to my knowledge—chefs of all persuasions are known to court her opinion and her approval. Her most recent book is intriguingly titled “Masala Memsahib” and it is a wonderful journey through giving us a window into food across India. Her expertise is honed from years of practice and her prose is that of an imaginative writer. And I am eager to talk to her about the book and about her life. So here she is. Karen Anand, welcome to The Literary City.ABOUT KAREN ANANDKaren Anand is widely accepted as one of India's first food gurus. A prolific author with some 30 books published, she has been a TV host on popular food shows.  Karen received the prestigious Food & Spirit Award (Trophée de l'Esprit Alimentaire) for Culture from the French Government. It was 1976, and Disco was hot. While Donna Summer, Barry White, Gloria Gaynor, and the Salsoul Orchestra churned out the genre's early standards, there were also your usual oddities in the shelves, from the overtly sexy to the downright novelty. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band was neither, and in fact, they weren't even Disco. However, their carefree lyrics and tight danceable musicianship fit beautifully with the times.Co-founded by brothers August Darnell (aka Kid Creole) and Stony Browder Jr., Dr. Buzzard's drew influences from the big-band and swing eras, as well as Soul, Latin, Jazz, and African sounds, and came up with a fresh and lush fusion that was ready for the funky feet.At its very core was the sensual, silky and exuberant voice of Cory Daye, who was more than happy to stay in the background and let the men call the shots. That was, of course, until they buckled under pressure and Cory had no choice but to step out front, give life to August's lyrics of the “tragic mulatto” and Stony's dazzling arrangements, and in the process, create one of the most enchanting postcards of the early Disco years.Note: In the episode we mention that Stony Browder Jr. passed on in 1991. There's a phrase in the French language that goes, “Cherchez la femme.” In translation, it means “find the woman,” or “look for the woman,” and typically it's derogatory, a phrase used as an explanation for the reasons why a man may be behaving badly. Cherchez la femme, some say, meaning that “woman troubles” are assumed to be at the core of any man's real problems. During the summer of 1976, Cory Daye‘s voice wafted through the bamboo forests of New York's Fire Island like an intoxicating fragrance. As the lead vocalist and co-founder of Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band, she beckoned the island's dwellers to untold pleasures while the group's self-titled debut stirred dancers into sweaty, salty abandon. Boardwalks seldom pulsed with such a bewitching beat.Fire Island was worlds away from the South Bronx where Daye first met composer/arranger Stony Browder, Jr. (guitar/piano) and his brother, lyricist August Darnell (bass). Drummer Mickey Sevilla and vibe master “Sugar Coated” Andy Hernandez (aka Coati Mundi) helped crystallize the group's musical aesthetic, which had morphed from R&B into a blend of big band, soul, Latin, jazz, dance, and pop. Produced by Four Seasons tunesmith Sandy Linzer, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band (1976) brought the grandeur of swing-era bandstands to the discotheque, melding wry social commentary with classic Hollywood romanticism. “Everybody's favorite album is Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band on RCA,” critic Vince Aletti wrote in his “Disco File” column for Record World. “It's this summer's major surprise hit not only because three cuts are eminently danceable (‘Sour and Sweet', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and ‘I'll Play the Fool'), but because the group's fabulously eclectic sound — drawing on several decades of American pop music from big band jazz to doo-wop soul to sophisticated disco, full of sly musical quotes — is so fresh and appealing” (7 August 1976).Aletti would later declare Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band the “Most Essential Disco Album of 1976”, while the Los Angeles Times named Savannah Band “the hottest disco act in the country” (26 November 1976). Even Aletti's peers in the rock press cheered the group's arrival. “It's a pleasure to admit that their music is a fresh pop hybrid with its own rhythmic integrity, and that its sophistication is a lot brighter and more lively than most of the organic bullshit making it to the rock stage in the mid-'70s,” Robert Christgau noted in the Village Voice.Rolling Stone published its own rave review of Savannah Band's debut. “The highest moments introduce a genuinely surrealistic disco whose adventurous use of bitonality and electronic sound effects stands in absolute contrast to the recent disco market's cynical prefabrication of oldies,” wrote Stephen Holden. “‘I'll Play the Fool', ‘Cherchez La Femme', and especially ‘Sour and Sweet', are group originals that literally explode the genre with their brittle scintillating audacity” (23 September 1976).With a sound that signaled disco's penchant for innovation, Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band supplanted the Bee Gees' “You Should Be Dancing” from number one on Billboard‘s “National Disco Action Top 30” in October 1976. A month later, “Cherchez La Femme” debuted on the Hot 100 where it would peak at #27 and introduce one of the era's most indelible opening lines — “Tommy Mottola lives on the road” — to the airwaves. The album itself was certified gold and earned the group a GRAMMY nomination for “Best New Artist”.In '79 Cory Daye released her solo album, “Cory and Me”. Rolling Stone, November '79 - Cory delivers a vocal performance that's direct and elusive, girlishly simple and musically sophisticated, sexy without being huff-and-puffy.   When Daye makes her entrance in any song, it's like the sun breaking through a bank of dark clouds. Paired again with producer-extraordinaire Sandy Linzer, singles “Single Again”, “A Wiggle and A Giggle” and the thumping “Pow Wow” will Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa.
