Go to www.InsightGlobal.com/LearningLeader Rob Kimbel is an owner of Kimbel Mechanical Systems, located in Fayetteville, AR. He joined KMS in 1993, and in 2001, at the age of 26, he became the CEO and grew what was then 3 local plumbers making a couple hundred thousand dollars a year into a national company with more than 750 employees and earning hundreds of millions in revenue per year. Rob is also a partner in multiple start-ups, real estate projects, and real estate funds that specialize in affordable housing across the United States. Rob is also a mentor and advisor to several local businesses and entrepreneurs in NW Arkansas. He has also served on the boards of Generations Bank, NWA Home Builders Association, and Beyond the Game, a non-profit organization serving the impoverished of the Dominican Republic. Notes: Betty Joe Drive… Lived in the hood. $200/month. Rob regularly takes his children to see where they lived. "I want to remind the kids where we came from." They started as a 3-person plumbing company. Rob was working for his dad, making $12-$14 an hour. Now, they do $260m in revenue and have 750 full-time employees. When Rob was 25 years old, his dad asked him to be the CEO. He initially said no. Strategic risk-taking as a cornerstone of growth: Rob navigates the industry challenge of balancing new work with workforce capacity by making bold hiring decisions—demonstrating a greater risk appetite than his father. "We are always hiring" reflects their proactive approach to scaling. Kimbel is good at growing people. They fail, and stick with them to grow. “Profits are the applause for growing our people.” How to be good? Show up, work hard, and finish the job. The bar is so low. The No Child Left Behind Act wasn't great for the trades industry. They made it seem that every person needed to go to college. When every person shouldn't do that. Some should go into the trades. There are high school grads who make $100K/year by their mid-20s at Kimbel. The Kimbel Purpose: Create opportunities to improve lives. Values - TEAM, Humility, Hunger, Grit, Integrity. TEAM- We willingly sacrifice for the good of the team. Row together. Humility - We never consider ourselves above anyone or anything. Take the back seat. Hunger - We choose to continually raise the bar. Never complacent. Integrity - We do the right thing, in all places, at all times. The how matters. Grit - We persevere, no matter the situation. Remember the why. Thank you notes – Each executive member writes at least one thank you note per week. This works as a forcing function for them to look for people doing great work and living by their values. Touch points - Senior leaders (30 people) reach out to 2 people per week to check on them. That's 3,000 touches per year. Free from all, servant to all. Tattoos on Rob's forearms. I have made myself a servant. Free from work, I don't care what society thinks. But I have a responsibility to be a steward. To be a servant to all. Rob works out like a psycho. Super hard. Why? Start with the end in mind. I want to hold Cheri on my shoulders when I'm 65. I want to ski with my kids when I'm 80. I like to compete. I want to win Spartan races. I like doing hard things. It also creates clarity in my mind throughout the day. Karomy messages me that she knows I'm running the stairs when she gets emails from me with lots of ideas. Marriage insights: "It must be intentional. We have fun together. We are genuine friends. We still have to work through stuff." Parenting philosophy shaped by observing other wealthy families: "It's critical that kids do hard work. They shouldn't start in an office. They should be out with the chickens. Be in the mess. Start at the bottom. Start in the ditch." Family-business boundary maintenance: "We get together every other weekend for family game night. We try not to have much business talk." Sold 70% of the business last July. What was the feeling the moment the money was wired? It was surreal. Want to honor Dad with 25 years of GRIT. Excellence defined: "It's continual learning. Wanting to get better. Think, what can I do better?" Creating a truth-telling culture: "Have to be willing to hear it and create a space where the truth is spoken." Life and career wisdom: "A career is not linear just like a marriage isn't. Have patience and live in the suck. Don't quit. There will be seasons of suck. Keep going."
In this episode of Talkin' Schmitt, we welcome the old homie from up North, Mr. Willis Kimbel. Willis checks in from his new skateshop in Portland, Oregon Rip's Co which was inspired by Bad Co. He shares his journey in skateboarding, the establishment of his skate shop, and the influence of his family and skate culture on his life. Family support played a crucial role in Willis's skateboarding journey. Listen as we deep dive in the wayback maching where a young Willis experiences the early stokes of skateboarding at the Encinitas YMCA. Willis ponders the question of the potential revival of the iconic Thrasher Magazine skateboarding show 'King of the Road', and the importance of good company during travels One thing seems to be clear, the boys can chat it up and have plenty of history and stories together. This month's guest is Allissa Sims with Kimbel Mechanical Systems. Alissa sheds some light on what excavators can do to ensure safety and damage prevention during their jobs. Our discussion covers the importance of communication on jobsites with other stakeholders and what to do if damages do occur. It was a great discussion and we are thankful of Kimbel knowing the importance of 811.
Wednesday, July 20th, my cell phone rang. A number I didn't recognize showed up, and I answered. On the other end was Arren Kimbel-Sannit, a reporter with Montana Free Press in Helena. He wanted to know if I had time for an interview regarding J.D. Hall. I still want to know how he got my number. Nevertheless, on September 13th, the result of that interview and Arren's other investigations were published at MTFP in an article over 7,000 words long titled 'The gospel - and the GOP - according to J.D. Hall.' In this episode, I intend to talk through the quotes and references contained in this article related to platforms, persons, positions, and principles which I know to be important to my home state of Montana, my country America, and both myself and many of my friends and family across the U.S. On the front end, I will confess to suspecting long ago the whole ugly business would end up here - that conservative Christian views on a wide array of issues being tied to Hall, an effort would be summarily made to decry all together as repressive, offensive, harsh, and ignorant. Even in saying that, I hope and pray this is not the end. So long as important lessons can be learned from the cautionary tale of a power-drunk opportunist egomaniac, and of the consequences - both personal and political - of endorsement and acquiescence of his antics by turn, perhaps we will see a silver lining. Make no mistake, Hall was enabled and inspired by the bad behavior of many - right, left, and center. And this is what comes of being most interested in "getting things done," and leaving principles where the handling of truth and the folks who disagree are concerned on the threshing floor. God's grace in Christ Jesus can shine on those who have erred greatly here, both through sins of omission and commission, and I pray that it will. God surely will answer prayers for wisdom for them that heed the warning and ask the Lord for wisdom. But I begin to feel in reading this article as though all parties concerned in American politics these days - even in remote Montana - need to be reminded that either the whole counsel of God is authoritative or else none of it is. Moreover, and along similar lines, I would remind my fellow Montanans on all sides of this that Christ himself reserved his fiercest rebukes for hypocrites, those who only play-acted at having principles when the same applied to everyone but themselves and their allies. And such can indeed be found on all sides, as it turns out. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/garrett-ashley-mullet/support

Join us as we take a deep dive into the science of human origins with Dr. William Kimbel, Director of the Institute of Human Origins based at Arizona State University. We discuss Dr. Kimbel's research on human origins, specifically the period between 2.5 and 4 million years ago - during which our own genus Homo emerged from smaller-brained ancestors. We talk specifically about Lucy (Lucy is a hominin ancestor that lived in east Africa between 3 and 3.9 million years ago, and she is “famous” because her skeleton is remarkably complete – 40 percent – and because she changed the way we understood the evolution of bipedalism. She is a member of the species known as Australopithecus afarensis. We also talk about another well-known Australopithecine species found in South Africa – A. africanus – which lived between 2.7 and 2.3 million years ago. And last but not least, we focus in on Ardi (Ardipithicus ramidus), a remarkably complete skeleton, which also came from Ethiopia and dates to 4.4 million years ago. This is a fascinating discussion about our deep genealogy, join us and learn more about how we became human. - President Donald Trump's refusal to commit to a peaceful presidential transition Wednesday comes as Republicans across the country are taking concrete steps that threaten to undermine the integrity of the election, particularly in key battleground states. - Facebook said Thursday it had identified and shut down a network of fake accounts that included fictitious personas it said were tied to Russian military intelligence. - A study published Wednesday in The New England Journal of Medicine says a 54-year-old man died as a result of eating too much licorice. The man, a construction worker from Massachusetts, lost consciousness inside a fast-food restaurant and was taken to a hospital, where he died the next day. Doctors wrote that he had "a poor diet, consisting primarily of several packages of candy daily," and that three weeks before, he switched from eating fruit-flavored soft candy to licorice candy, which contained glycyrrhizic acid. - In the wake of President Donald Trump equivocating as to whether he would transfer power to Joe Biden in the event of a defeat at the ballot box in 40 days, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany tried to clear things up on Thursday. Spoiler alert: She didn't! "The President will accept the results of a free and fair election," said McEnany. So, by that standard, the only way that the election will be "free and fair" (in McEnany's words) is if all mail-in ballots -- many of which have already been sent and returned! -- are somehow disqualified (or something?). - Breonna Taylor updates: Louisville mayor extends citywide curfew through weekend. Following the grand jury's findings in the Breonna Taylor case, Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer has extended the city's curfew. Join us as we discuss these news headlines and more. 515-605-9888
- President Trump told reporters he will announce his pick to replace the last Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg on Saturday at 5 p.m. He said he has spoken to “many people” when asked how many people he has interviewed. “I've spoken to many and we are getting close to a decision,” Trump said. - Ask anyone about the next six weeks and they will likely give you some version of this as a response: Whoa boy. It is going to be wild. Which it is! The last 42 days of a presidential election are always filled with unpredictable storylines, big moments and, more than anything, uncertainty. But this election is not like past elections, argues longtime Democratic strategist Doug Sosnik in a series of slides organized under the title "The Coronavirus Election: The Voting has Begun." - On Monday night in Ohio, Lt. Gov. Jon Husted was warming up the crowd for President Donald Trump -- and trying to sell some campaign merchandise. "I'm trying to make masks in America great again and I've got President Trump's masks," Husted, a Republican, told the audience gathered in an airplane hangar in Vandalia. That's when the boos from the crowd -- sitting closely together and most without masks on -- started. Husted, because he thought he was facing a friendly-ish crowd, went on. Biden leads Trump by 9 points, 52% to 43%, among likely voters, the survey finds. This is the first time this election cycle the poll has screened for likely voters — this narrower group is the most likely to actually cast a ballot, compared to the larger group of people who are registered to vote.

- In 1996, President Bill Clinton was promising a "bridge to the 21st century" in Milwaukee. George W. Bush was calling John Kerry an Iraq War flip-flopper in Poplar Bluffs, Missouri, in 2004. Barack Obama talked up his auto bailout in Toledo, Ohio, in 2012 -- but only after touring hurricane damage on the Gulf Coast. - Summoning reporters to the White House North Portico for a midday news conference, Trump again used the executive mansion as a political stage -- an ethical line he started bending months ago but broke and threw away completely during last month's Republican National Convention. - There are at least 6,292,206 cases of coronavirus in the US, and at least 189,095 people have died, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. - President Trump Tweets: "The Dow Jones Industrial just closed above 29,000! You are so lucky to have me as your President. With Joe Biden' it would crash" - Trump, as his tweet on Wednesday makes crystal clear, in his mind, feels like he is doing the country a favor in serving as president. He sees the presidency as an inconvenience -- one he is only willing to take on because he believes only he can fix what ails the country. (We need to talk about this. 515-605-9888) - .Barr -- again, the TOP law enforcement official in the country -- is suggesting: foreign countries could well send in "thousands" of fake mail-in ballots -- thus compromising the 2020 presidential election. His reasoning is that it is easy to make a counterfeit mail-in ballot and that so many states are moving toward more absentee voting in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. He has also stated that he has seen no evidence of this. - Question: Although 5 States have had only mail in ballots for some time with virtually no fraud, Why doesn't everybody who wants to vote by mail just request and absentee Ballot?? Your thoughts? (515-605-9888).

NEWS HEADLINE Because of fear of further spreading COVID-19, Joe Biden and the Democrats scaled the upcoming Democratic National Convention down to basically a virtual event....no arena packed with people. Donald Trump ridiculed Biden and the Dems for doing this. Trump and his supporters were hell-bent on having their full-blown Republican National Convention. After all...to Trump and his non-mask wearing supporters: COVID-19 is nothing, no worse than the seasonal flu. Well, fast forward a few weeks....and on yesterday, Trump was forced to scrap the Republican National Convention in Jacksonville, Florida because of COVID-19. The coronavirus cases and deaths are skyrocketing in Florida. How does a man who can't breathe without crowded arenas jam-packed with supporters screaming out "Make America Great", let a virus that "ain't shit" force him to cancel the Republican National Convention, which is the crown jewel of the Republican election season? It's because COVID-19 ain't no joke....it's devastating America. And Trump and his supporters are experiencing late awakenings...and have to reckon with that fact. Andy Kimbel is a very talented folk and country-blues performer whose star is rising quickly on the national blues and folk scene. Listen to him play and you will hear the influences of traditional blues, folk, R&B and a touch of New Orleans style roots music. Hard to pigeonhole, Kimbel has been likened to Lightning Hopkins, John Hammond, Chris Smither and Leo Kotkke. He performs a unique selection of material that ranges from gentle ballads and pointed originals, to hard driving country blues and slide guitar using various tunings and harmonics. Interspersed between his own songs, Andy also includes songs ranging from traditional folk tunes to more contemporary ballads and delights in having the audience participate in many of the numbers. His own distinct interpretations set him apart and give even old traditional blues a new face. Andy is a great improviser, often re-inventing words and music using the themes of traditional blues stemming from the early 20’s to the mid 30’s. "His always expressive guitar playing ranges from frolicking and exuberant to driving and soulful. Whether picking, plucking, or using a skillful slide, Kimbel brings to the stage vision of the roots of American Music that conjures up everything from rambling railroad trains to dark and lonely nights of solitary traveling"...
