CBC Newfoundland Morning joined the CBC's holiday season campaign in support of local food banks. The Gander team with host Martin Jones was live from Kinden's Bakery and Cafe in Lewisporte. Guests enjoyed a delicious breakfast with all proceeds going to the food bank. CBC Corner Brook with host Bernice Hillier was live from Tim Horton's on Mount Bernard Ave. for a festive show with music by CarlyRae Mouland.

Kinden's Bakery and Cafe in Lewisporte was closed over the weekend - but it was for a really GOOD reason. Owner Haley Kinden had to travel to St. John's to collect an award from NLOWE - the Newfoundland and Labrador Organization of Women Entrepreneurs. Kinden was given the Young Entrepreneur of the Year award for 2024.

The show stopped in for a chat at Kinden's Bakery and Café in Lewisporte to talk tourism potential and economic development.

Lewisporte is about to have a new tourism strategy....one that organizers think will make the town a hub for visitors to the area and connect all of the surrounding communities. Lewisporte is growing, with bakeries, cafes, shops, restaurants, and Airbnbs. Haley Kinden is one of the people spearheading the Tourism Association. She owns Kinden's Bakery and Cafe, and spoke with the CBC's Leigh Anne Power..

They're not just limited to businesses, either - residents have also reported sheds and properties are also being targeted. Opvoeding is natuurlijk niet een one size fit all. Maar ik heb wel de overtuiging dat met basisprincipes je een authentieke ouder kan zijn die met de uitdagingen van de opvoeding om kan gaan.En soms is het zo gemakkelijk als de situatie vanuit een ander perspectief zien. Wat ik daarmee bedoel is dat door jezelf andere feedback te geven, de lat wat lager te leggen of jezelf een andere vraag te stellen, de situatie heel anders kan zijn.Je kunt hierbij jezelf de vraag stellen: Ben ik op dit moment de held of the mentor voor mijn kind?Iedereen wilt altijd de held zijn. Je identificeert jezelf met de held die voor de eind goed al goed zorgt. Dat is logisch en nogmaals dat wil iedereen. Maar dit kan een valkuil zijn voor de opvoeding. Laat me het voorbeeld geven van een klant waarin we een situatie bespraken die zij meemaakte met haar zoontje. Ze had haar zoontje van school opgehaald en op de terugweg naar huis vertelde hij dat er een vervelende situatie was gebeurt in de klas. Twee andere jongetjes hadden wat van hem afgepakt en ze hadden hem geduwd. Hij wordt verder niet gepest maar had hij hier nu wel een heel vervelend gevoel over. Moeder vond dit natuurlijk niet leuk om te horen maar moest een beslissing maken hoe ze er mee om zou gaan: Langs de ijscoman een lekker ijsje kopen zodat zoon zich beter zou voelen.De docent opbellen en vertellen over het incident en zorgen dat hij beter op gaat letten.De ouders van de andere jongetjes bellen en zorgen dat het niet meer gebeurt.Of iets anders? Wat zou jij doen?Nou wil ik niet zeggen dat dit of dat antwoord goed of fout antwoord is, maar ik wil deze situatie wel gebruiken om de held en mentor metafoor te verduidelijken.Om te beginnen:Het doel van de opvoeding is om:Een veilige en stimulerende omgeving te bieden aan je kindNormen en waarden van de maatschappij mee te gevenZelfverzekerdheid en veerkrachtig te ontwikkelen bij je kindEn het mentor/held verhaal past in het derde punt: zelfverzekerdheid en veerkracht ontwikkelen bij je kind. Ik zei zojuist dat iedereen de held wilt zijn, dus jij als ouder maar ook jouw kind. Dus bij de voorbeeld acties zoals ik die benoemde die je kunt doen als ouder, kun je jezelf de vraag stellen: wie zou er in die situaties de held zijn?Je kind heeft een probleem met andere jongetjes uit de klas. In plaats van de held te zijn, wat zou je kunnen doen om je kind de held te laten zijn en zelf de rol van mentor aan te nemen?Het is belangrijk om niet direct het probleem voor je kind op te lossen, anders zou je de held zijn. Maar wat zou je dan wel kunnen doen om een mentor te zijn?Veerkracht en zelfverzekerdheid ontwikkel je niet door in een gespreid bedje op te groeienwaarbij er nooit een tegenslag is en waar problemen altijd voor je worden opgelost. Je ontwikkelt dit door ruimte te geven aan het gevoel en deze vervolgens om te zetten in acties om het probleem zelf op te lossen.Als ouder is er niks vervelender om te zien als je kind pijn of verdriet heeft. En daar wil ik je ook in erkennen hoe lastig zo'n situatie zou zijn. Maar als je je alleen focust om je kind direct beter te laten voelen, mis je een leer moment.Daarom wil ik je vragen de volgende keer als je kind een probleem heeft of een negatieve emotie ervaart, dat je jezelf de vraag stelt: Wat kan ik doen om mijn kind de held te laten zijn van dit verhaal.
