Maarva Andor's words about reckonings loom over our discussion today. As authoritarianism creeps over the United States, we're finding parallels to the Imperial Era everywhere. In “The Reckoning” (The Mandalorian, Chapter 7), we explore the governance (and lack thereof) of the New Republic, the rise of fascism in a post-Endor era, and what the Empire looks like in ABY 9. We also pay an homage to Kuiil—the original Bae, and one of the reasons for the start of Growing Up Skywalker—by exploring the concept of honor. This cliffhanger episode ratchets up the tension, and we have a ton to say about the political reality of The Mandalorian (and our own time). Three and a half years ago, Growing Up Skywalker began a non-toxic, chronological weekly watchthrough of all of Star Wars—with the goal of getting to The Mandalorian. And we're here! We're finally here! On the show this week, we're recapping the premiere of the shot heard 'round the world in the form of the first Star Wars live-action TV show, “The Mandalorian.” We talk through justice in the Era of the New Republic, the mishmash of ancient legend + spaghetti Western + samurai story + space opera, and the reason we created our fan-favorite segment, Bae Watch. (Spoiler alert: It's Kuiil. It's always been Kuiil.) Want more Growing Up Skywalker? This is a great time to sign up for our Patreon for bonus audio content! The Mandalorian finds a vent into the sewers, where he hopes to find his people's hidden stronghold. Moff Gideon gives them until nightfall to surrender, or he will order his troops to fire, before saying Din Djarin, the Mandalorian's real name. MARC The Mandalorian recognizes Gideon, who had been an officer of the Empire's secret police when the Empire took over Mandalore. IG-11 arrives on a Scout Trooper's bike with the Child, blasting through the stormtroopers. The Mandalorian takes down several more, but is badly wounded by Gideon. As the group take cover inside, Gideon orders a Flametrooper to incinerate them, but the Child uses the Force to reflect the flames and kill the trooper. MIKEY The Mandalorian and IG-11 remain behind while Dune and Karga take the Child into the sewers. Pointing out that a Mandalorian's face being seen is technically not a violation of the Mandalorian creed, as he is a droid and not a living thing, IG-11 removes the Mandalorian's helmet, revealing the latter's face for the first time. After treating his injuries they then rejoin the others in the sewers. MARC Arriving at the Mandalorian enclave, they find it abandoned except for the Armorer, who explains that the Imperials found the enclave when the Mandalorians revealed themselves. Upon seeing the Child, the Armorer is reminded of the Jedi, whom Mandalorians see as their ancient enemies. She instructs the Mandalorian to take the Child to the Jedi, wherever they might be; she also carves a Mudhorn signet into his pauldron and gives him a jetpack. MIKEY While the Armorer remains behind, the Mandalorian, Dune, Karga, IG-11, and the Child escape down an underground lava river. IG-11 decides to sacrifice himself by walking into an ambush and activating his self-destruct. After they emerge from the tunnel, Gideon attacks in the TIE fighter in which he arrived. Using his jetpack, the Mandalorian plants explosives on Gideon's fighter, which brings down the craft. MARC With the Imperials seemingly dealt with, Karga invites the Mandalorian to return to the Guild, but he refuses as he must take care of the Child. Dune elects to remain behind to work as Karga's enforcer. The Mandalorian buries Kuiil's body beneath a cairn of stones and departs Nevarro. Meanwhile, Gideon cuts himself out of the crashed fighter with the Darksaber. THANK YOU PATRONS Mikey: Marc and I make our living as full-time musicians. Not gonna lie. Re-watching this episode definitely made it feel more like a filler episode. You have the beautiful but, distracting Lizzo. The beautiful but distracting Jack Black. Do I love them in their respective fields? Of course I do. Why the fuck are they in a Star Wars TV show?!?!?!? It's jarring! Once again it seems like the creators are trying to pad out the run time of the series. Once they land on planet, their immediately contracted by the planetary leadership to assist with malfunctioning droids. That's right folks, deadliest warriors in the galaxy are now retiring old malfunctioning droids. The twist of course, is that many of these malfunctioning droids are BATTLE DROIDS! How irresponsible is the leadership that they'd attempt to override the design and programming of a machine designed to kill and deploy it within a civilian population. Aside from Black and Lizzo, the one actor it was cool to see on screen was Christopher Lloyd. Not because he portrayed Doc Brown in Back to the Future but, for his role as Judge Doom in Who Framed Roger Rabbit. That is my jam to this day. In the next scene we get a call back to season one and Din's encounter with the ugnaught Kuiil on Nevarro. Side note, I had no idea Nick Nolte did the voice for Kuiil. Using his prior relationship to the ugnaught, he's able to get their attention and help with tracking down the malfunctioning droids. The only interesting part about what happens next is that we get to see B1 and B2 Super Battledroids on screen for the first time since Revenge of the Sith. It does really amount to much. Of course we find out Christopher Lloyd was a former Separatist who had plans to flip the switch and cause the battledroids to turn on their masters. It would have been a much more interesting episode if we had to see Mandalorians unite and fight however many legions of Battledroids were on planet. Instead, the bad guys is quickly captured like the Scooby Doo villain he is and we get to the only important scene in the episode. In the intro, we know the remaining Mandalorian once loyal to Bo-Katan are now acting as mercenaries and privateers. In the beginning of the season we learn they all abandoned her after she came home empty handed without the Dark Saber. Now we learn what they've been up to and that they've been hired to act as protection for the planet. It's here where Bo-Katan attempts to reunite with her former clan peacefully but, of course she chooses combat supremacy for the right to control the remains of the tribe. Obviously she wins and Din Djarin confesses that he was defeated and the Dark Saber taken from him, and that Bo-Katan defeated and rescued his enemy. Thereby making Bo-Katan the rightful owner of the Dark Saber. Without any evidence and only the word of Din Djarin does her clan accept and the episode ends with Bo-Katan once again wielding the Dark Saber. I honestly don't remember my initial thoughts when I first watched this episode. All I know, is that this second go around was probably not any better than the first. In this episode, hosts Alan Sanders and Walt Murray chat with body actor, Misty Rosas, who recently brought the character of Quiil to life on The Mandalorian. Misty first started her career as a gymnast, working to stay flexible and dynamic. She also spent time working as a dancer. As luck would have it, being a few inches shy of five feet tall, she learned she could play characters at Disneyland. She rapidly began to grow her craft as a character performance artist. One of her first block buster rolls was playing the ape in Congo. When the chance came to audtion for Kuiil, she jumped at it. That role has opened up new opportunities for Misty, including a chance to do more acting outside of the body costumes. While continuing her acting career, Misty is also an accomplished pop singer, working on her music between gigs. She is a talented performer on multiple levels and she has really only just begun to hit her stride. After the interview, Walt was once again forced to review a film selected by the listeners in The Wilder Ride LIsteners Group on Facebook. After the painful review, Alan and Walt each shared a pair of crazy news stories from the past week. Then, Misty joined the guys as they jumped into their entertainment segment. WATCHING Walt highly recommends Wind River starring Jeremy Renner. He also enjoyed watching the documentary, If I Leave Here Tomorrow about Lynyrd Skynyrd. Alan just saw RUSH Cinema Strangiato at the movies and loved every second. He rewatched Dances with Wolves and Tombstone, two fantastic Westerns. Alan is also hooked on the YouTube channels Ashleigh Burton and The Daily Doug. Misty is really liking the Apple TV show, Ted Lasso. She also likes The Leftovers and the documentary, How Can You Mend a Broken Heart? about the BeeGees. READING Walt continues to plow through the book, "Don't Make Me Pull Over." Alan is knee-deep in news and the history of Bartow County for a video project he is producing. Misty is reading, "The Alchemist," "The Four Agreements," and has just ordered, "Atlas of the Heart." LISTENING Walt suggests the podcast, Team Never Quit. He also loves the show, In the Red Clay. Walt also planned to listen to WTF with Mark Maron interviewing Steve Buscemi. Alan, in honor of the Rush show recently published, has been listening to the albums, Moving Pictures, Hold Your Fire and Hemispheres. He also is keeping up with the podcasts, The Great Escape Minute, Radio Labyrinth and 60MW Podcast. As he closed, Alan mentioned being the voice artist for a series of short stories starring Pig Newton and Ewe N. McGregor. Misty is diving into the Foo Fighters album, "Hail Satin." She is also spending a lot of time diving into her own music. Make sure you have subscribed to The Wilder Ride on your pod-catcher of choice so you will not miss a single episode! I've been a fan of The Mandalorian since it debuted in 2019, and when I found out that one actor had played two wonderful characters on the show (Kuiil and Frog Lady) I was really impressed with her work. That's when I looked up Misty Rosas and discovered her long résumé of other character work besides the Disney+ Star Wars series. She is also a dancer, singer, gymnast, stunt woman, and voiceover artist. And while her résumé is impressive, it was when I read her personal story that I truly became a fan of Misty. So we will certainly be talking about the Mandalorian and other movies and shows that she's been a part of, but it is her personal and medical challenges with hearing loss that really forged her character and made her not only the actor but also the person that she is today. Sign up for the monthly WINMI Newsletter. I have to admit that there have only been a handful of interviews in the five seasons of this podcast where I was a mixture of nervous and excited to talk to a guest, my time with Misty was certainly one of those time. Misty Rosas is the multi-talented artist who brought #TheMandalorian's #Kuiil and Frog Lady to life. She is a singer, dancer, actor, performance artist, motion capture artist, championship gymnast and stunt person. You've seen her in #Congo as Amy the ape, Sid the Science Kid and Gonzon from Muppet Babies. Most importantly, she is an inspiration and an amazing talent.@MissMistyRosasMistyRosas.comYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjmQsmwKGJvzxbgZj6rRsGwwww.ATGcast.comPatreon.com/ATGcastTwitter.com/ATGcastInstagram.com/ATGcastFacebook.com/ATGcastTikTok.com/ATGcastMisty Rosas, a rare, one of a kind, multitalented artist. Her artistic endeavors are broad and varied, but one thing is for certain, whatever she chooses to do, she puts her whole heart and soul into it!Misty's career began when she took her first gymnastics class at the age of 2 1/2. She loved it so much it was difficult to get her to leave at the end of the session. "There were tears involved!" Her gymnastics career spanned 17 years, and was highlighted when Misty was chosen to join the U.S. National Gymnastics Team as an Elite gymnast. Throughout this period, Misty continued to study dance, especially ballet, as an integral part of her gymnastics training. She combined her dance and performance skills to land her first professional job at age 18. She was hired to perform in a succession of Disney stage productions including, "Fantasmic!", "The Lion King Parade", and "The Very Merry Christmas Parade". "I love to dance, and getting the opportunity to be Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, Donald Duck, Daisy Duck, and a dancing monkey (in "Fantasmic!"), was a wonderful job!" When Misty moved to Los Angeles, she began training at the Edge Performing Arts Center for dance, vocal studies with John Deaver, and acting classes at the Henke Acting Studio. It was there that Misty first heard the quote that has guided her efforts ever since, "Luck happens when opportunity meets preparation".Misty landed her first major film role as the lead ape character, Amy, in the Paramount Pictures movie "Congo". This "break of a lifetime" thrust her career full speed ahead. "It was such a thrilling adventure!" The ”Congo" experience felt like an advanced and accelerated course in acting, learning and understanding blocking, acting to multiple camera angles, and of course, learning how to feel, breathe, and be a gorilla. To be quite honest, I was very overwhelmed and I struggled a lot at first, but it was a tremendous opportunity, so I worked very hard, and everyday I went into the work with this intention, “I will never give up!” This was also the point where Misty developed the ability to work "blind". The ape head was animatronic, designed with no accommodation for vision, so Misty had to memorize her physical position within the set, and in relation to that of the other actors, in order to make it appear that she was comfortably "looking" through Amy's eyes. Misty was under the tutelage of renowned movement artists and character actors, Peter Elliot and John Alexander. The techniques she learned enabled her to book several more jobs in partnership with the Stan Winston Studios (now named Legacy Effects). Misty considers her long-standing and rewarding relationship with Legacy Effects, to be one of the lynchpins of her success. It was during the filming of "Congo" that Misty began to perform stunts. Her height and gymnastics abilities led to an ongoing inventory of stunt roles. Her stunts have been featured in dozens of films and television episodes including, "Van Helsing", "Casper: A Spirited Beginning", "Casper & Wendy" (stunt doubling Hillary Duff), "Three Kings", "Charlie Wilson's War", America's Most Wanted, Rescue 911, Sliders, and Boston Legal "I got to tackle William Shatner, Woohoo!". While working on the enormous sets of "Van Helsing", Misty added wire work and fire burns to her growing list of stunt skills. "It was radical!.......TOASTY!"In 2002, Misty began her very successful association with the Jim Henson Company. First, in the Disney movie "The Country Bears", and since then in a number of realtime Computer Generated (CG) animation projects. These performances include the title roles of Sid, in the PBS series "Sid the Science Kid", and T.J. in "T.J. Bearytales", and most recently, the Jim Henson Company/Netflix collaboration “Word Party”. Misty is the motion capture/body performer for the lovable, yet feisty and irreverent character, Lulu. In preparing for "The Country Bears", "I took the skills I learned from "Congo" and "Instinct", and then was taught, by Michelan Sisti, the techniques needed to perform the character of Beary. It was different from my previous experience, so Micha spent a great deal of time patiently working with me to develop my skills. Acting in “The Country Bears" movie gave Misty the opportunity to meet Brian Henson. "Brian invited me to work on a Muppet Babies test shoot with Micha. It was my first Motion Capture (mocap) experience. WOW!, it was humbling! I had the hardest time finding the virtual camera! Micha kept pointing at the camera-like red lights 15 feet above me, all around me, saying, "Find your eye lines by looking at those", and I said, “I don't understand? What camera? There is no camera? Where? The work in the motion capture space is both mentally and physically grueling! You cannot lose your concentration ever! Again, I was very lucky to have Micha there, teaching me his craft.” Misty soon mastered these techniques and continues to deliver fantastic, endearing performances with each opportunity that is presented to her.Star Wars: The Mandalorian. Misty's most recent role is a reunion with her friends at Legacy Effects, Kathleen Kennedy, and the Walt Disney Company. And now, she is also welcomed into the Lucasfilm/Star Wars family. Her hard work, training, and a lengthy resume, made Misty the natural choice for the already beloved character of Kuiil. Kuiil is voiced by the Oscar nominated and Golden Globe winning actor, Nick Nolte. Misty really enjoyed creating the perfect body for such a perfect voice. Kuiil has already coined his own signature line too, with the popular, "I have spoken". The Mandalorian premiered November 12th, 2019 on the Disney+ streaming platform. In the Fall of 2019, the company began shooting Season 2 which is slated for a Fall 2020 release.Misty's music! Her most recent venture to add to her skill set: Singer, songwriter, recording artist. Misty recorded her debut album at the world renowned Henson Recording Studio (formerly the A&M Studios). She collaborated with Paul Graham, vocal producer of "Sid the Science Kid", and his music partner (currently on tour with Tim McGraw) Paul Bushnell. Together they have recorded and produced Misty's album, “Life Lessons Love”, as well as, her new single, “Paper House”. Her music and music videos have earned her an HMMA nomination, 2 Telly Award wins, film placement, Spotify playlist placement, and features in various film festivals. What Misty is most proud of is the opportunity to open for her music heroes, Air Supply. She has opened for the band 3 times, and the highlight, so far, has been opening for Air Supply at The Starlight Bowl, in Burbank, Ca. She will be heading back into the recording studio to record her newest single! So stay tuned. You can hear Misty's music on iTunes, Amazon, Spotify, Google Play Music, and YouTube."I consider each and every one of my jobs a stepping stone, a learning experience that guides me towards the next one. There are so many people that have weaved in and out of my life that have taught me, guided me, inspired me, and simply helped me to get where I am today. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank them: My mom, Arlene, my dad, Carlos Sr., my brothers, Joey, Miklos and Carlos Jr., my sister, Gigi, Russell Hitchcock and Graham Russell of Air Supply, Barnette Ricci, Nancy Thurston, Mark Wagner, Peter Elliot, John Alexander, Stan Winston, Mark Majarian, Jon Turteltaub, Anthony Hopkins, Mark Blanchard, Terri Best, Michelan Sisti, Christopher Walken, Dave "SuperDave" Fedele, Christie Williams, Bikram Choudhury, Eduardo Sanchez, Brad William Henke, Brian Henson, Halle Stanford, Paul Graham, Paul Bushnell, Tom MacLear, Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Deb Chow, Rick Famuyiwa, Bryce Dallas Howard, Peyton Reed. THANK YOU!"When Misty isn't performing you can find her practicing and teaching Bikram yoga. She graduated from Bikram's grueling, nine week Teacher Training program in 2006, and she has been teaching ever since. Her favorite words of wisdom by Bikram Choudhury, "You're never too old, never too bad, never too late and never too sick to start from the scratch once again." To which Misty would add, "Don't think about it, just put your yoga clothes on, and do it! Practice Bikram yoga for your health and your happiness! It changes you from the inside out!" "DO WHAT YOU LOVE. LOVE WHAT YOU DO!"

Episode Synopsis below (spoilers) The Mandalorian receives a message from Greef Karga. Karga's town has been overrun by Imperial troops led by the Client, who is desperate to recover the Child. Karga proposes that the Mandalorian use the Child as bait in order to kill the Client and free the town. In return, Karga will square things with the Guild, which would allow the Mandalorian and the Child to live in peace. Sensing a trap, the Mandalorian recruits Cara Dune and Kuiil the Ugnaught to assist him. Kuill has also rebuilt and reprogrammed IG-11, and the group journeys to Nevarro. Upon arrival they meet Karga and his associates, but en route to the town are attacked by Mynocks. Karga is injured but the Child uses the force to heal his wound. In return, Karga shoots his associates and explains his original plan to kill the Mandalorian and take the Child to the Client. The group formulates a new plan: Karga will pretend that Dune captured the Mandalorian, and all three will enter the town to meet the Client. Meanwhile, Kuiil will return the Child to the ship. During the meeting, the Client receives a call from Moff Gideon, whose troops surround the building and open fire, killing the Client. Gideon arrives and boasts that the Child will soon be in his possession. In the desert outside town, scout troopers track and kill Kuiil and kidnap the Child.
