In this episode of the Explaining History podcast we speak with the writer Dennis Broe whose new book The Dark Ages, explores the second Hollywood anti communist purge of 1951. We talk about Hollywood and Los Angeles as a site of ongoing class struggle, the role of the media and the LAPD in the development of modern Los Angeles and the role of dissenting writers and film makers in challenging the power of the studios. You can join Dennis for a zoom class on Darkest LA: Film Noir, Greed and Corporate Graft in LaLa Land Friday Nights 7-8:30 ETFive-week online course begins May 2, then 9, 16, 23, June 6$100 For the Course includes a special “bonus” sixth week June 13 Register for the course at https://radicalimagination.info/A Zoom link will be sent to all subscribersSponsored by Institute for the Radical Imagination, Marxist Education Program,LA Progressive and People's WorldWeek 1 – Left of Eden, about the beginning of the Cold War and its intrusion into Hollywood at the moment of the beginning of the breakup of the studio system which had been so prosperous over the previous two decades. We'll see the echoes of the Cold War ethos in today's foreign policy.Week 2 – A Hello To Arms, about the renewal of the arms industry after the war in what was nominally a time of peace and how that affected the African-American community as wartime opportunities vanished. This will be an occasion to examine the current state of relations in the African-American community as well as the US “defense” industry, a behemoth that today is utterly out of control and that dictates global wars.Week 3 – The Precinct With The Golden Arm about the LAPD and its changing modes of surveillance, particularly of the Mexican-American community is this period starting to dominate Boyle Heights, an area that is now being gentrified. This novel also looks at Big Pharma and its relation to drugs in these communities and will prompt an examination of the origin of street drugs, of surveillance by what Mike Davis calls “the space police,” and of continued struggle and resistance in the city's Latinx population.Week 4 – The House That Buff Built about the LA real estate industry and the design and spatial allocation of the city and its sprawling suburbs. This will be an examination of racial discrimination in housing and especially of the history and exploitation of the Chinese population as well as the role of the LA Times and its owners The Chandlers in divvying up the city.Week 5 – The Dark Ages about the second and more destructive devastation caused by McCarthyism in the form of HUAC in Hollywood. We will look at the history of unions in the entertainment industry and in the city as a whole and posit that it was union activity in the industry that brought HUAC to Hollywood. We'll then look further at the history of unions in the city both in the past and today.Bonus 6th Week, Pornocopia, on corporate America's penetration into the mob industries of porn in LA and gambling in Las Vegas. What's behind the Minerals deal with Ukraine? Why it's mostly smoke & mirrors, not a contract or final deal. Why both parties compromised & left the deal vague. Who benefits from the deal? How it's related to Europe's $260B frozen Russian assets. Why it's PR. Second part of show continues discussion of the intensifying contradictions behind continuing the US global empire. Why the empire as now structured is no longer affordable and US imperialists are intent on restructuring it (once again as in 1913-19, 1944-50 and 1979-86). US deficits & debt levels unsustainable and DOGE spending cuts for tax cuts as desperate effort to regrow faltering US economy and restore empire's finances. Domestic US economic restructuring as next phase of Neoliberal policy or as beginning of the end of Neoliberal policies. Today's show topic is an assessment of the November 6 election and why Trump won. What were some interesting facts about both the electoral college vote outcome and the national popular vote totals that the mainstream media is ignoring? What new strategies Trump introduced that may have made a difference vs. old strategies Harris carried out that no longer resonate with voters>? Is there a political party realignment that is now beginning? Is Identity politics now DOA? The show concludes with some early predictions what Trump will focus on first after January 20. Why Austerity big social program spending cuts are coming. How will Trump handle the rise of the BRICS? One hundred four years ago—on July 26, 1920, to be specific—cultural critic and journalist H.L. Mencken wrote a column in The Baltimore Sun entitled Bayard and Lionheart. I read that column during college, never thinking I would draw from it years later in my work. That work included writing a commentary, which was published in LA Progressive a few months after Donald Trump took office in 2017. I'm back at it seven years later, wondering if words written over a century ago apply to America today. My conclusion is that they do. You be the judge. In this episode, we sit down with Tom Nguyen from L.A. Progressive Shooters to chat about how he started out and turned it into what it is today. He tells us what it was like getting into the instructor scene in 2020 with the massive influx of new gun owners, and why it was so important for him to do so. Labor Day is a compromise holiday in America because we didn't want to honor labor on the first day of May, May Day, as it is observed all over the rest of the world. May Day, some of our early 20th century presidents and capitalists believed, was too closely associated with Communism and Socialism and we never wanted to be a part of that. America wants to honor laborers, they just never really wanted to pay them very much. Somehow, in the richest country in the world, we still can't figure out how to honor labor by paying workers a living wage and until we can do that, we will continue to stand on the verge of class warfare. As a pastor, I have worked with veterans who were still struggling with the cost of war decades after they were discharged. As a peace worker in Cambodia, I saw the trauma of war still living in people's hearts, influencing cultures, and scarring the land itself, decades after the official end of war. The wounds of war are deep and last a long time, unless and until we decide, as a society, to do the work to heal them. In the current situation, we have both the immediate responsibility to help bring about an end of the war in Ukraine as swiftly as possible, and a long-term responsibility to help bring about healing and rebuilding for all who have been impacted. Note: Our regularly scheduled sermon will still be posted You can read this reflection online, including links to articles and resources: http://archives.spfccc.org/2022/02/reflections-on-russias-invasion-of.html You can also read Dr. Ray's earlier reflections, "Will Arms Sales Set the Stage for Ukraine?", at the LA Progressive: https://www.laprogressive.com/will-arms-sales-set-the-stage-for-ukraine/

There is a lot of pressure in leadership circles these days to beat the competition and score 'big wins.' Because of that emphasis, we can sometimes set aside the importance of what author David Brooks calls Eulogy Virtues, things like doing the right thing, being courageous in the face of political pressure, and figuring out ways to balance performance and integrity. In this program, James Votruba (president emeritus, Northern Kentucky Univesity) joins me in celebrating the life of one of Jim's mentors, Paul Miller, a person who embodied Eulogy Virtues in spirit and practice. Our conversation is more than a remembrance. It is a plea for emphasizing the importance of Eulogy Virtues when we use the word 'leadership.' To learn more about Paul Miller's life and work, read Remembering Paul A. Miller: Leadership for the Public Good. (Today's program is brought to you by FutureU and LA Progressive.)

How to nurture a healthy relationship with life experiences, particularly undesirable, uncomfortable or unfavorable ones, is best captured in Pema Chodron's quote “Nothing ever goes away until it teaches us what we need to know.” However, setbacks may lead to more setbacks for those with under-developed executive function including a lack of self-awareness, rigidity and a failure to problem solve. US President Donald Trump was acquitted on both charges by the Republican-led Senate on Wednesday afternoon. "The final vote was 52-48 on abuse of power and 53-47 on obstruction of Congress," the Learfield Wire Service reported. "Trump was impeached by the Democratic-controlled House for abuse of power and obstructing Congress in the investigation of the Ukraine scandal. Republicans rejected Democratic demands for witness testimony and documents that have been blocked by the White House. The House accused Trump of illegally withholding vital US military aid to Ukraine while pressuring Ukraine to investigate Democrats. Republicans called impeachment a partisan charade and argued that Trump's conduct was not impeachable." Politically, Tuesday was one raucous day. In his State of the Union address, "President Trump framed his third year in office as an unmistakable success and his fourth as more of the same," The New York Times reported Wednesday. Due to a coding glitch, we still don't know who won the Iowa Democratic presidential caucuses. What are we to make of all of this?"The US trade deficit fell for the first time in six years in 2019 as the White House's trade war with China curbed the import bill, keeping the economy on a moderate growth path despite a slowdown in consumer spending and weak business investment," Reuters reported Wednesday. "The report from the Commerce Department on Wednesday also showed the Trump administration's 'America First' agenda decreased the flow of goods last year, with exports posting their first decline since 2016. President Donald Trump, who has dubbed himself 'the tariff man,' has pledged to shrink the deficit by shutting out more unfairly traded imports and renegotiating free trade agreements. Trump has argued that substantially cutting the trade deficit would boost annual economic growth to 3% on a sustainable basis. The economy has, however, failed to hit that mark, growing 2.3% in 2019, which was the slowest in three years, after expanding 2.9% in 2018." In Danny Haiphong's new piece for the Black Agenda Report, entitled "Why Attacking the Green Party to Assist the War Party Helps Donald Trump," he states, "We've heard it before. Independent political parties such as the Greens should refrain from organizing in 'swing states' during the general election to ensure that the Democratic Party vote isn't split in favor of the Republican Party. Ever since liberals blamed Ralph Nader for Al Gore's loss to George W. Bush, the Green Party has become a favorite scapegoat for the Democrats to explain away their electoral failures. This time around, the argument is being made by the likes of Noam Chomsky, Bill Fletcher and Barbara Ehrenreich. In an open letter published in the LA Progressive, Chomsky and the rest warn Green Party activists and organizers not to play spoiler for the Democratic Party in the 2020 election." What's going on here?GUESTS:John Kiriakou — Co-host of Loud & Clear on Sputnik News Radio. Stephen Lendman — Editor of and contributor to the book "Flashpoint in Ukraine: US Drive for Hegemony Risks WW III." Dr. Linwood Tauheed — Associate professor of economics at the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Danny Haiphong — Activist and journalist in the New York City area. He and Roberto Sirvent are co-authors of the forthcoming book "American Exceptionalism and American Innocence: A People's History of Fake News - From the Revolutionary War to the War on Terror."

Today's episode features a grab-bag of stories that have been making the rounds, including the recent ruling out of the Second Circuit regarding Donald Trump's use of Twitter, a setback for our buddy Brian Frosh's efforts to enforce the Emoluments Clauses of the Constitution, and an update on the real-word consequences of the Janus v. AFSCME decision we decry so much around here. We begin with the Second Circuit's ruling in Knight First Amendment Inst. v. Trump, which established that a government official may convert a social media platform such as Twitter into a "limited use public forum," from which he may not block users on the basis of the political content of their speech -- i.e., viewpoint discrimination. Almost no one understands this decision; we'll make sure you're one of the lucky ones who do! Then, it's time for a breakdown of the 4th Circuit's ruling in In re Trump, which directs the lower court to dismiss the lawsuit (and pending discovery) against Trump in the lawsuit brought by Maryland and D.C. alleging violations of the Foreign and Domestic Emoluments Clauses. Find out what this case is all about, whether the outcome is reasonable, and what's next. After that, it's time for a quick look at the real-world implications of the Janus v. AFSCME decision allowing public-sector union employees to withhold a portion of their dues otherwise allocated for administrative duties under... some crazy right-wing theory that something something something, because Sam Alito knows diminishing the power of unions will hurt Democrats. But what else did that decision do? Listen and find out! After all that, it's time for the most controversial #TTTBE yet, in which we discover the answer to Thomas Takes The Bar Exam (regarding larceny and robbery) ... or do we? You won't want to miss this one! Appearances Andrew was a guest on the latest episode of the Left at the Valley podcast discussing abortion, as well as the most recent episode of Mueller, She Wrote talking.. well, pretty much everything! Show Notes & Links Click here to read the Second Circuit's ruling in Knight First Amendment Inst. v. Trump (the Twitter case), and here to check out the Fourth Circuit's ruling in In Re Trump (the Emoluments case). We first covered the emoluments case way back in Episode 78, and we interviewed Seth Barrett Tillman for his unique take in Episode 35 and Episode 36. We learned that bad stuff was coming in the emoluments litigation in Episode 239 when the 4th Circuit issued a stay of all discovery; you can read that stay order here. I sat down with Ankur Patel, former AD 45 candidate, and Shawnee Badger, Our Revolution Santa Clarita, to talk about the primaries and the path forward. Every loss is a win, every defeat is a chance to learn, with that in mind Ankur and Shawnee help me sketch out a path forward for progressives in Southern California. What have we been weak on? Where have we been strong? How can we better organize our communities? How do we create electoral success out of those efforts? Inspired by Gayle McLaughlin, the Los Angeles Progressive Alliance aims to bridge the divide between different groups to coordinate more successfully when it comes time to vote. Harnessing and directing the new progressive momentum is a huge task and as more radical young people get involved in politics it is time to create the kinds of new structures that we will need to carry us forward as we continue to win seats.
