In this episode, you're "gonna hear some pretty great songs in a pretty ugly language". This is the (ironic, kind of) usual opening of this show, but it doesn't really fit this time. Because in this edition of Amongst The Krauts you're going to hear excerpts from songs that you probably wouldn't have guessed were from German-speaking bands. There's 80s noir electro pop by Krakow Loves Adana, there's indietronic by The Notwist and Lali Puna, and of course there's quirky 70s Bedroom-Yacht-Rock by John Moods, Mike's guest on this episode of Amongst The Krauts. They talk about their "stand-offish" relationship to German pop and the advantages and disadvantages of singing in English versus in German. To listen to the show on mixcloud with the full-length tracks, head to https://www.mixcloud.com/sohoradio/amongst-the-krauts-08092021/ This is the Soho Radio podcast, showcasing the best broadcasts from our online radio station in the heart of London.Across our Soho and NYC + Culture channels, we have a wide range of shows covering every genre alongside chat, discussions and special productions. To catch up on all things Soho Radio head on over to mixcloud.com/sohoradio or tune in live anytime at sohoradiolondon.com.

Indie rock was extremely diverse, with subgenres that include indie pop, jangle pop, and lo-fi, among others. Originally used to describe record labels, the term became associated with the music they produced and was initially used interchangeably with alternative rock. As grunge and punk revival bands in the US, and then Britpop bands in the UK, broke into the mainstream in the 1990s, it came to be used to identify those acts that retained an outsider and underground perspective. In the 2000s, as a result of changes in the music industry and the growing importance of the Internet, a number of indie rock acts began to enjoy commercial success, leading to questions about its meaningfulness as a term.In the mid-1980s, the term "indie" began to be used to describe the music produced on post-punk labels.[1] A number of prominent indie rock record labels were founded during the 1980s. During the 1990s, Grunge bands broke into the mainstream, and the term "alternative" lost its original counter-cultural meaning. The term "indie rock" became associated with the bands and genres that remained dedicated to their independent status.[2] By the end of the 1990s indie rock developed a number of subgenres and related styles. Following indie pop these included lo-fi, noise pop, emo, sadcore, post-rock, space rock and math rock.[2] In the 2000s, changes in the music industry and in music technology enabled a new wave of indie rock bands to achieve mainstream success.[3]In the early 2000s, a new group of bands that played a stripped-down and back-to-basics version of guitar rock emerged into the mainstream. The commercial breakthrough from these scenes was led by four bands: The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Hives and The Vines. Emo also broke into mainstream culture in the early 2000s.[4] By the end of the 2000s the proliferation of indie bands was being referred to as "indie landfill".[5] Indietronica took off in the new millennium as digital technology developed, with acts including Broadcast from the UK, Justice from France, Lali Puna from Germany and The Postal Service, Ratatat, and BOBBY from the USA.[6]Get Your FixAddictions and Other Vices*

Modern primitive is how the journey starts this week. Beginning with Nohon and moving into the modern didgeridoo of Wadhom. We bring an old Juno Reactor track called Solaris which introduces some throat singing and then we hear a really cool one from Huun-Huur-Tu. Throat singing with a modern twist. Squarepusher rounds out the first half of the show with his track Last Ap Roach. We travel on in time and around the world to land with Bomb The Bass & Lali Puna's Clearcut. Germany's The Notwist find the groove, and then Trouble Andrew with Santigold pick up the pace with Reporters. IAMX electo-clashes with After Every Party I Die, then we venture to Sweden and hear Girls Night Out from The Knife, and wrap it up with one from Fever Ray called Triangle Walks.
