Researchers have discovered that humpback whale song is strikingly similar to human language. Dr Jenny Allen, an expert in whale song structure at Griffith University, speaks to Reged Ahmad about the years of recording, listening and analysing that led to this greater understanding of how humpback whales learn their tune

Cities and Memory - remixing the sounds of the world

"A Whale Song came about in a few stages.  "In 2019 I was fortunate enough to take a trip out to sea with my family to watch the Humpback Whale migration. We were out there for a while with not a whale in sight, so had the feeling to sing one to us. So I started to sing. And lo and behold, a whale appeared. This magnificent creature stayed by our boat for over an hour, going under and around us. I sang to it the entire time. I wished I had a hydrophone that day to record our duet. What an honour it was to be in the presence of such ancient majesty! I wrote a short poem, out on the boat, after the whale departed. That poem became the lyrics to this song.  "I recorded the track about 4am in the morning, in the quiet of pre-dawn. Later on I thought it interesting I had chosen to record it then, when I recalled the lyrics speak of being woken from sleep to hear a whale's first song. To create the track I sang and played my dear old pump organ. Afterwards I added the wonderful recording of Laguna de San Carlos in Mexico over the top. "This song is for the whales — they are the library of the world." We're picking up where we left off last week as this episode focuses on night two of the two show run from Pearl Jam's shows in Atlantic City in 2005. High octane performances, an intimate crowd and a Bruce Springsteen cover happen in night one, but what could possibly top that? A song debut from an unreleased album, Stone Gossard grabbing the mic and an appearance from a spaceman? Those three things could help the cause. The band kicked off this show with a dynamite version of Present Tense and from there it just kept getting better and better. Immortality impacts the crowd with an intense ending, Not For You has a fun new section improved, they let Stone sing even though the crowd wanted to drop the Leash and we get the live debut of Avocado track Gone seven months before the album came out. We will spend a lengthy amount of time on the debut due to it's uniqueness in the catalog. The song was written that weekend in Ed's hotel room and featured no other band member's accompanyment. So how was it able to be as impactful as it was considering the elements? You'll find out in the show! Also, we see a rock legend join up with the band for Rockin' In The Free World here, and since we have finished up the North American run of our tour, we'll spend some time discussing some of the OTOTOs played at Ohana Festival. While we give Whale Song some love here, the episode was recorded before the band broke out Gremmie Out Of Control on night two. So perhaps you'll hear a voice talk about it real quick at a very opportune time! In the trees, through the water, and under the dirt: Snakes evolve faster than their lizard relatives, allowing them to occupy diverse niches. Also, researchers are working to understand just how baleen whales are able to produce their haunting songs.Snakes Are Evolutionary SuperstarsLove ‘em or hate ‘em, new research shows that snakes deserve our recognition as evolutionary superstars. The study, published last week in the journal Science, found that snakes evolve faster than other reptiles, allowing them to thrive in a wide range of environments. It shouldn't be too surprising: Many of the nearly 4,000 snake species occupy extremely specialized niches in their ecosystems. The blunt-headed tree snake, for example, eats through batches of treefrog eggs in Central and South America. Pythons, which can grow to 20 feet long, can take down large mammals like antelopes.Joining Ira to talk about the evolutionary speed of snakes is study co-author Dr. Daniel Rabosky, evolutionary biologist and curator of the Museum of Zoology at the University of Michigan.Whale Song Is All In The LarynxWhale songs can be both beautiful and haunting. But the exact mechanism that the 16 species of baleen whales, like humpback and minke whales, use to make those noises hasn't been well understood. The finer points of whale anatomy are hard to study, in part because the soft tissues of beached whales often begin to decompose before researchers can preserve and study them. And until the relatively recent advent of monitoring tags that can be attached to individual whales, it's been hard to associate a given underwater sound with any specific whale. For a recent study, published in the journal Nature, researchers took advantage of several well-preserved beached whales to investigate the mysteries of the baleen whale larynx and its role in whale song. Dr. Coen Elemans of the University of Southern Denmark joins Ira to discuss the work, which included a MacGyveresque contraption involving party balloons and exercise bands that blew air at controlled pressures through preserved whale larynx tissues. The researchers found that there are limits to both the frequencies these whales can produce, and the depths at which they are physically able to sing.Transcripts for each segment will be available after the show airs on sciencefriday.com. Online platforms have even played a role in organizing violent acts in the real world, like genocide against the Rohinga people in Myanmar, and the violent attempt to overturn the election at the United States capitol. But how did we get here? Has social media fundamentally changed how we interact with the world? And how did big tech companies accumulate so much unchecked power along the way?   Remembering Roger Payne, Who Helped Save The Whales Americans haven't always loved whales and dolphins. In the 1950s, the average American thought of whales as the floating raw materials for margarine, animal feed, and fertilizer—if they thought about whales at all. But twenty-five years later, things changed for cetaceans in a big way. Whales became the poster-animal for a new environmental movement, and cries of “save the whales!” echoed from the halls of government to the whaling grounds of the Pacific. What happened? Shifting attitudes were due, in large part, to the work of scientist Roger Payne, who died earlier this month at the age of 88. His recordings helped to popularize whalesong, and stoked the public imagination about intelligent underwater creatures who used vocalizations to communicate. In 2018, our podcast “Undiscovered” explored the history of Payne's work, and that of his colleagues. We're featuring this episode as a way of remembering his life and groundbreaking work.   To stay updated on all-things-science, sign up for Science Friday's newsletters. Nature filmmaker Tom Mustill worked with Mr Payne up until his death, and told Today's Amol Rajan: "He totally changed our perception of these animals that we were just slaughtering. "It's not data that drives change in people, it's emotion and connection." We also hear some of the whale song that Mr Payne was so famous for.

Tom Mustill is a conservation biologist and he makes beautiful films about where nature and people meet. He's worked with Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough, he's been shat on by bats in Mexico, and recently he finished a book called How to Speak Whale.  It describes the very real possibility that someday, maybe even in my lifetime, we'll begin to understand the complex language of whales--and all this would imply.I interviewed Tom for hours and I didn't want him to stop until he'd told me every last thing he's learned about whale behavior and every story he could remember. He was polite about it. I don't know why I felt this insatiable need to hear every story. Maybe it seems that if we could understand whale culture a little bit, everything would make a little more sense? Anyway I recorded Tom for as long as he'd let me.

Details: Las Vegas International Pipe Show - The Premiere Show for Pipe Enthusiasts (vegaspipeshow.com) Pipe Question: (From Jeremy Dukes) Hey Beau and Jon David, Erin and I went out to do a trip in the Bourbon Trail last week for my birthday. I'd never been and I cannot praise it enough. All the tours we took were exquisite and informational. Plus, the tastings were amazing. Buffalo Trace (and more specifically Eagle Rare) is my favorite distiller and blend, and we were fortunate enough to tour their facilities. If you've never been, you must put it on your bucket list. Worth every hour of my trip many times over. My question though is this: during the tastings they gave us a small piece of chocolate for a palate cleanser, but our guide actually got us to take a bite of the chocolate and then a swig of Buffalo Trace. It was like I'd never tasted Buffalo Trace before! It enhanced so many flavors of the whiskey that I'd never recognized prior. So…the question…..would a tobacco blend with notes of chocolate (let's say Polar Express) have a like affect on my palate when I drink a glass of whiskey? Hope you both are well and enjoying your “Lunting America Tour”. Best wishes from my family to yours. -jeremy Quick Fire Questions: John Coatney Confirmed Pipe SMokers of Fiction & Literature Edition Henry Mitchell (the dad) or George Wilson (the neighbor) (Dennis the Menace) The Wind in the Willows or Curious George Tony Stark or Professor X Meriadoc Brandybuck or Peregrin Took Listener Feedback: (From Eric Karloski in GR) Beau? In our Father To Father series, we try to capture the realness of conversation you find at your local pipe shop as we share our experience navigating fatherhood as two dads of young kids. Pipe Question - (From Kirk) Hey guys I'm a long time listener. Been pipe smoking for roughly 13 years and I started listening I think on your 3rd or 4th episode years ago. My question is, is there a certain temp where pipes should be stored? I have a large rack in my living room that is full and I'm looking at getting a couple more to store the pipes I don't smoke as often and will have to keep it in my basement, which is unfinished and cold in the winter and muggy in the summer. Just curious if anything would happen to my pipes that are stored there. Always enjoy your show. Kirk QFQ - (From Pastor Joda) So here's a twist for you. I'm thinking of the way you have relaunched some things this year, what about a deep thoughts version of QFQ? What advice would you give to your 23 year old self? Listener Feedback - (From Caleb of the OFF podcast) Hey Beau! The most recent Father to Father episode came out on my daughter's 10th birthday. Waking up this morning and reflecting on the day I became a father was only enhanced by hearing your memories as well. I feel like I shared a special day with you guys! (From John) Gentlemen, I am, in fact, one of the listeners you've mentioned recently - I've been working to catch up on older episodes (selectively), and only in the last few days been listening to the most recent episodes as well. I want to thank you for the work you're doing, as I've been enjoying it immensely. The recent Father to Father episode was outstanding. Thank you for being willing to put yourselves out there. I know that it encouraged and edified me, and I can't be the only one. As a 40 year-old father of four young boys (7, 6, 4, and 2), I relate to much of what you discussed. Please, please keep it up. I'll try not to go overlong in telling about how I got into pipe smoking (and by all means, use what you like, if any, and cut what you like), but I bought my first pipe (a Szabo) in Budapest, Hungary, when I was on temporary duty as a Soldier and Officer in the U.S. Army (Veterinary Corps). I was stationed in Vicenza, Italy, and began collecting pipes at that time (in 2007). However, over time the pipes ended up in a box in the closet, and when we moved to Ethiopia in 2019 as members of Christian Veterinary Mission, the pipes stayed in storage here in the States. However, when we'd been in Ethiopia for about a month, I was invited into a theological social media group in which most of the guys smoked pipes, and I deeply regretted not bringing any pipes or tobacco with me. Then, in 2020, we had to leave Ethiopia due to COVID, and have been unable to return due to a subsequent civil war. I've taken a temporary research position at a veterinary school here in the States, and have been able to appreciate smoking a pipe again. Needless to say, if and when we're able to return to Ethiopia in the near future (God willing), I'll be taking as much pipe smoking materiel as my wife allows. One final note - a couple weeks back I was doing a much needed tobacco inventory, and I realized that, after Cornell & Diehl and Ken Byron Ventures, I have significantly more Country Squire tobacco than any other blender. You guys have great stuff across the board, but Cowboy Coffee is my go to smoke. My order of Whale Song is arriving today, and I can't wait. Once again: Keep up the great work! Peace,

As pipe enthusiasts, we know that ‘matter matters' and we all appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into the various pipes and pipe tobaccos available to us. In this series, we will expand our horizons beyond the pipe to discover top shelf products and experiences that bring us joy and up our sophistication game along the way. This week: Cigars! Listener Feedback: (From Brian) Hey guys! You addressed a question of mine on air recently where I asked about what goes into the naming of blends. Jon David talked about how it was often a very personal process. I was struck when I saw Whale Song appear on the Country Squire website. The name didn't immediately resonate with me, until I read the description. When I realized it was a limited edition made up of McClelland ingredients and that it was a Virginia-Perique (which I know to be among Jon David's favorite styles of blends), I began to realize what the name really meant. Whale Song. Not only evocative of that iconic crested whale image on the cover of so many McClelland tins, but also suggestive of the barely audible song whales use to mourn the loss of family members. This is representative of what a blend name can be. Simple, poetic, like a haiku.

Here we get a chance to revisit some of the famous pipe smokers we've covered in the past and shift the focus from what they loved to who they were and the complexities of their lives. This week, famed painter and pipe smoker: Claude Monet Pipe Question: (From Joel) Hey guys! First off - I LOVE the “Father to Father” series! - especially the most recent one. Thanks for being honest and vulnerable and telling it how it is for all of us dads!  Next - I bought a nice pipe rack from a seller on eBay, and it came with a bunch of pipes. Two of these are EA Carey “Magic inch” pipes. They have a perforated area on the stem that lets in cool air - and they take a “papyrate” paper filter. It's really strange, but I have to say - both of these pipes smoke really well! After I cleaned them up and sterilized them, I have really enjoyed them.  Just wondered if Jon David had any experience with these pipes. Any road - as always - absolutely love your podcast! Like riding around with two good friends! Thank you! Listener Feedback: (From Chaz) I just received my order of Whale Song in the mail today and I have to say, it was a world class "unboxing" experience.  I've gotten several orders from The Country Squire and I always appreciate the hand-written note, but today's delivery was truly exceptional.  The accompanying card with the tasting notes, pairings from Tea, to Coffee, to Cocktails was really helpful and a next level touch. Congrats to Quinn. I purchased enough to smoke now with some to cellar, and I can't wait to enjoy this. I love the show, I love the shop and I have to tell you, listening has even been a catalyst in re-connecting me to the faith.  I love that I can listen to your show without fear of what might come across the speakers when my grandkids are in the car!  Keep up the great work and thanks for making this service available!
