Doris Hardoon became a Disney Legend in 2022 and was recognized at the D23 Expo that same year. Starting at Walt Disney Imagineering (WED Enterprises at the time), Doris worked on the development of EPCOT alongside folks like Rolly Crump, Marty Sklar, and John Hench. As a designer and stylist, Doris's first official project was The Land Pavilion. Over the span of her 40-year career at Imagineering, Doris went on to work on every Disney castle park around the world. She also helped lead the development of Shanghai Disneyland as an Executive Creative Director and Producer and the Castle of Magical Dreams at Hong Kong Disneyland. In this podcast episode, I chat with Doris about his career at Walt Disney Imagineering, including some of the attractions she helped bring to life. We also discuss WESTCOT, which she helped develop as a potential project for California, and her work with her design consulting company, DDesign. What is your favorite Doris Hardoon creation? While Walt's dream for Epcot was never fully — or even close to fully realized, it's still a remarkable tribute to his original ideals; his spirit of discovery, his fascination with the future and its endless possibilities, and the invitation to celebrate that future together. And it happens to be my favorite Disney park. So I'm excited to have you come along with me for this first of two episodes where we explore and appreciate the Soundscapes of this wonderful place. Listen closely for the sounds of your own favorite areas. No on-attraction music will be featured in this episode, but I think you'll be able to place the location of most of what you hear. If not, you can always check the show notes which include time-stamps for the various areas we wander through. Now, Epcot is always evolving and, at the time of this recording, undergoing its biggest transformation. So, the Future World that you hear today is but a moment in time. And I'm thrilled to be able to share that moment with you right now. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - Let's head back to Epcot to revisit Living With The Land that received some upgrades since we last rode! Recorded on August 16, 2019. TRANSCRIPT: This episode we check out an updated attraction that we’ve been on before. Back in episode #42, we rode Living with the Land at Epcot’s Land Pavilion. In august 2019, the attraction received a few updates. There aren’t really 5 new fast facts I can tell you about the attraction except that in August of 2019 the theater section of the attraction, where you go through the barn, is now sporting all new HD video and a slightly different narration which you will hear in this episode. Also, starting in 2019, the attraction received a holiday overlay as part of Epcot’s Festival of the Holidays. This overlay called Merry and Bright Nights at Living with the Land, features twinkling lights and fun holiday decorations spread throughout the Living with the land attraction. We’ll have to go back sometime and record that version as well. For now, here’s the 2019 update to Living with the Land. After the attraction audio, I’ll give you my thoughts on this attraction. This is a binaural recording so if you have headphones put them on now as we ride the 2019 update to Epcot’s Living With The Land. http://www.attractionchecklist.com - It's time to check out the third of the films that Epcot received in early 2020, Awesome Planet! Come along with Grant and John as they see this new film and give it a review. Recorded on January 16, 2020. TRANSCRIPT: Welcome to Attraction Checklist. This episode we head back to Epcot to take in the third of the three new films that debuted at Epcot in 2020, Awesome Planet. The guide map describes Awesome Planet by saying: On-screen exploration of the realm we call home-showcasing the beauty, diversity and dynamic story of Earth. There are no height requirements for this attraction and, because it is a film there is no Thrill Level listed. Before we see The Land’s newest attraction, here are five fast facts about Awesome Planet. 1. In March of 2019, it was announced that Awesome Planet would become the new featured film at The Land Pavilion at Epcot. It would be shown in the same theater that Circle of Life: An Environmental Fable had been shown in which has stopped shows in February of 2018. Though there were some advanced previews, Awesome Planet officially opened on January 17, 2020. 2. While new footage was shot for Awesome Planet, the film also uses footage from several Disneynature documentaries including Earth, Oceans and Wings of Life. It also has space sequences designed by Industrial Light and Magic. 3. Awesome Planet is narrated by Modern Family star Ty Burrell. 4. The score for Awesome Planet was composed by Steven Price. 5. Not only did the theater in The Land receive a new film, it also received some new in-theater effects including lightning, wind, and mist. Let’s go see if Awesome Planet is awesome or not. Joining me today is John B deHaas and after the film we’ll give you our thoughts on this new attraction. Well hello again everyone. June is now upon us and that means that next month, Disney World will begin reopening its parks. Hopefully all goes smoothly and Disneyland can follow suit. This weeks episode will feature source audio from one of the pavilions at EPCOT. This particular pavilion is usually so busy and filled with guests that the music is drowned out. This is one example of how Disney will use music from film scores in the parks. The Land Pavilion has been a staple at Epcot since it opened on the park's official dedication, October 1, 1982. While many guests now visit this pavilion because of the signature attraction, Soarin' (something we'll be sure to cover in a future episode), the other attractions here, especially Living with the Land, have a long, rich history at Walt Disney World. In this episode, we'll discuss how The Land is perhaps the closest to Walt's original vision for EPCOT Center and explore the pavilion's attractions past and present (Listen to the Land, Kitchen Kabaret, Symbiosis, Living with the Land, Food Rocks, Circle of Life: an Environmental Fable, and the various restaurants throughout the pavilion's history). Jim Sarno was a Walt Disney Imagineer working on the opening team for Epcot. He worked in the model shop with Harriet Burns, Joe Rohde, and many more classic Imagineers. Working on many of the pavilions we know and love at Epcot - including The Land Pavilion, Imagination Pavilion, Communicore, and Spaceship Earth - Jim was responsible for creating SMRT-1, the fountain that once lived in the center of the Land Pavilion, and much more. In this episode, I interview Jim as we discuss how he came to work at Walt Disney Imagineering, the projects he worked on, and advice he has for those looking to work for Walt Disney Imagineering in the future. Main Entrance Cast: Talking Theme Parks, Musing over Museums, and So Much More!
Welcome to Episode I of the Main Entrance Cast! In this episode, we introduce the new format of the podcast, including news, trip reports and, of course, the Feature Presentation, which for this episode is Main Entrances. We know there was a long wait, and we appreciate your patience while we worked out a few details to make the show the best it could be now, and it’s only going to get better from here! News (6:24) In our news segment, we’re talking about a couple headlines from the past month that merit further analysis, extrapolation, and other mindless ramblings. We talk about the 4/15 Notre Dame fire, including our thoughts on the efforts to raise money to rebuild. Next, we cover the announcement about the revision of Rivers of Light at Disney’s Animal Kingdom Theme Park. Finally, we jump into Meow Wolf Kaleidoscape at Denver’s Elitch Gardens park. Where in the World is Nick? (23:18) Our co-host Nick had the opportunity to take an Amtrak train from Denver to San Francisco. In this trip report, Nick briefly covers his thoughts about making an overnight train trip in a sleeper car (along with the craziness that came with it), as well as his marathon visit to the city of San Francisco, including the Walt Disney Family Museum. Feature Presentation (48:22) Why is this podcast called the Main Entrance Cast? Why are Main Entrances important, or are they at all. In this segment, Nick and Katie talk about what purpose a Main Entrance can serve, and what are some aspects found in good ones, bad ones, or those in-between. While the conversation expands to include entrance “lands” like Main Street, USA, and Port of Entry at Universal’s Islands of Adventure, the topic revolves around the importance of the thresholds to fun and discovery! Last Episode’s Trivia Question: What is the name of the theater that is slated to receive the new Awesome Planet show at the Land Pavilion at Epcot - Walt Disney World, FL? Last Episode’s Trivia Answer: The Harvest Theater This Episode’s Trivia Question: What was the former name of the main entrance plaza of Disney California Adventure. If you know the answer, drop us a line through Facebook or Twitter, or email us through the GOAFerBox at connect@mainentrancecast.com.

Corrections Todd gets everybody up to speed regarding the Tailor / Taylor Ham discussions and research. If you have listened to our previous episodes, this shouldn't be totally random for you. We had a listener write in, regarding a live band for Mickey's Birthdayland. How recalls this and also potentially knew somebody who was involved in the show. Another listener wrote in, regarding an SNL skit where 20,000 leagues kept popping up, throughout the sketch. Sounds pretty funny -if you have a link, please share it with us. Listener Mail Our first message is from one of our newest binge listeners. Jacob's first visit was earlier than our era, but he has really enjoyed catching up with all the history shared. This next message is from a fan and also a Lake & Lagoon Tour participant. Dan wants to know all about the Fort Wilderness Arcade, which is back behind Crockett's Tavern & Trails End Buffet. He is curious about the two levels, if it has always been for an arcade and even why... We weren't totally sure, but maybe a listener or former cast member can chime in. Our friend Reese wrote in regarding a sentence or wording on the Progress City display, while riding the Peoplemover. Todd did some investigating and so did a few others, so we are going to dig into this a bit more, but we have some information for you right now. Keith Beaulie has been doing an amazing job, transcribing our episodes into a legible and functional set of documents. We wanted to give him a shout out and also tell him thank you for taking the time to get this going. The automatic systems just weren't cutting it, but Keith has really done an amazing job. Finally, Alan Bowers wrote in to ask why Florida was actually chosen for Walt Disney World. Brian & How go through some of the major reasons and also break down why other locations were not utilized. Thank you for all the emails, tweets and comments you have sent our way. We try to respond to almost everything and do our best to pick unique questions for the show. [listenerfeedback] Map News For our latest event, we put together a really special giveaway. This one-of-a-kind collectors map is truly amazing and you really need to get one for your home or office. This episode we have sound taken in the Land pavilion during our 2002 trip to Walt Disney World, Since the pavilion has changed so much with the addition of Soarin' and removal of Food Rocks, much of the audio of this episode can no longer be heard, making this a sort of Yester"Land" episode with apologies to Werner Weiss.
