The Supreme Court ruled that the Defense Department could begin implementing a ban on trans-identifying service members, and the left immediately lost their minds. Connecticut Democratic Rep. Rosa DeLauro claimed that there was “no evidence” that FEMA discriminated against disaster victims based on political affiliation under Joe Biden, even though one agency supervisor was fired last year after directing relief workers to skip Trump homes during his administration. Education Secretary Linda McMahon told Harvard University in a letter that it would no longer be eligible for new federal grants, saying it has systematically violated federal law. The Trump administration on Monday moved to dismiss a challenge to the Food and Drug Administration's lax abortion pill guidelines, which have opened the floodgates of dangerous mail-order abortions.Become a supporter of Tapp into the Truth: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/tapp-into-the-truth--556114/supportTake This Quiz To Find Out The Best & Worst Foods To Avoid For Joint Pain!If you love high-quality jerky, you need to check out Jerky Snob. On this week's episode of 'The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart': Rebooting the Resistance. After a bruising battle over the Republican's spending bill and a split among the leadership, Democrats are taking the fight to MAGA territory, as a brand new NBC poll shows many voters are souring on President Trump's handling of the economy. The chair of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, Rep. Suzan DelBene, and Rep. Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut join me to talk about the way forward for their party. Putin's Playbook: Growing questions on whether the Russian dictator is ready to accept a ceasefire deal with Ukraine. I'll ask former Rep. Jane Harmon if Vladimir Putin is seriously considering a truce or just playing President Trump. And Minor Majority: House Speaker Mike Johnson needs every vote he can get with the Republican's razor-thin control of the House, so a key special election in Florida could make all the difference. I'll talk to Gay Valimont about her bid to take the seat of former Rep. Matt Gaetz. All that and more on “The Sunday Show with Jonathan Capehart.”
The Rich Zeoli Show- Full Show (03/13/2025): 3:05pm- On Thursday, President Donald Trump met with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Mark Rutte in the White House. The two discussed numerous issues—including negotiating a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, China's global predations, and reciprocal tariffs. 3:10pm- According to research from the Heritage Foundation's Oversight Project, former President Joe Biden signed dozens of executive orders with an “autopen”—raising questions about the legitimacy of those actions. Did Biden know what he was signing? Earlier this year, Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) revealed that during a closed-door meeting Biden had no recollection of signing an executive order that effectively froze new liquid natural gas export permits. While appearing on the show yesterday, Congressman Scott Perry (R-PA) asked “who was actually making the decisions?” and insisted Congress must investigate. He noted: “it's not clear” if Biden is “cognitively able to remember” what happened or if he was even aware his signature was being used. 3:20pm- On Tuesday, after meeting with Ukrainian officials in Saudi Arabia, Secretary of State Marco Rubio revealed that Ukraine agreed to terms for an immediate ceasefire with a willingness to enter “immediate negotiations to end this conflict [with Russia] in a way that's enduring and sustainable." On Thursday, during a press conference, Russian President Vladimir Putin said he was open to an agreement—though he insisted there needed to be alterations to the current terms—and that he is expecting to speak with President Trump over the phone in the coming days. 3:25pm- Since the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement gained momentum, have you paid closer attention to the ingredients in your food? 3:40pm- On Tuesday, the House of Representatives passed a continuing resolution to fund the government through September. The CR will now head to the Senate, which will require the support of several Democrats to overcome a 60-vote filibuster threshold. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), however, told reporters that Democrats will refuse to support the CR—which could mean the government shuts down on Friday at midnight. But according to Politico, a government shutdown may be in the Trump Administration's best interest—as the Attorney General and Office of Management of Budget will determine what federal activities are essential based on guidance that dates back to the Carter Administration. This would allow for DOGE to slash the size of government with even greater ease. 3:50pm- Disney Disaster: Disney's live action remake of the classic film Snow White is set to hit theaters on March 15th—but it's expected to bomb at the box office, potentially costing Disney hundreds of millions of dollars. Part of the problem, according to reports, is Disney's unwillingness to put the film's star, Rachel Zegler, on an extended promotional tour due to her past controversial comments which have included criticisms of the original Snow White story, nasty comments about castmates, and profane remarks about President Donald Trump and his supporters. 4:05pm- Breaking News: The Trump Administration has requested that the Supreme Court review the president's executive order effectively narrowing “birthright citizenship” to exclude children born in the United States to parents who are undocumented citizens residing in the country illegally. Federal courts in Maryland, Massachusetts, and Washington have paused President Donald Trump's executive order. 4:15pm- Craziest Clips of the Day: A video clip has gone viral of a Oregon Consumer Advisory Councilmember announcing that she self identifies as a “turtle.” PLUS, a flashback to September 2024 when purple-haired Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro attempted to generate excitement with Gen Z by using popular social media terms like “rizzler” and “skibidi.” Gen Z producer Justin translates the lingo for Rich and Ma ...

The candidates are set for next month's special election in the state Senate's 21st district. The four-town district covering Shelton and parts of Stratford, Monroe and Seymour had been represented by Senator Kevin Kelly, but he stepped down this month to become a state judge. According to the National Retail Federation, a record 183 million people are expected to shop in-store and online between Thanksgiving and Cyber Monday this year. Despite the convenience and ease of online shopping, about two-thirds of Black Friday shoppers surveyed said they plan to shop in stores on Friday. At least six Democratic members of Congress from Connecticut have said they were targeted with bomb threats to their homes, including Sen. Chris Murphy and all five House members—Reps. Jim Himes, Joe Courtney, John Larson, Jahana Hayes, and Rosa DeLauro. Police who responded said they didn't find any evidence of explosives on the lawmakers' properties. The UK Parliament gave initial support to a new bill to legalize assisted dying on Friday, paving the way for months of further debate. The bill would provide mentally competent, terminally ill adults in England and Wales—who doctors assess to have six months or less left to live—with the right to choose to end their lives with medical help. ⭕️Watch in-depth videos based on Truth & Tradition at Epoch TV

Ralph welcomes Vani Hari, also known as “The Food Babe,” to tell us about her campaign against Kellogg's to stop using artificial dyes in their cereals that have been linked to various health problems and have been banned in Europe. Plus, noted labor organizer, Chris Townsend gives us his take on the AFL-CIOs obeisant relationship to the Democratic Party.Vani Hari is an author and food activist. A former corporate consultant, she started the Food Babe blog in 2011, and she is the co-founder of the nutritional supplement startup Truvani. It is a game of whack-a-mole because we get these corporations to change, or they announce that they're going to change, and then they go back on their commitment. And that is what's happened with Kellogg's.Vani HariChris Townsend is a 45-year union member and leader. He was most recently the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) International Union Organizing Director. Previously he was an International Representative and Political Action Director for the United Electrical Workers Union (UE), and he has held local positions in both the SEIU and UFCW.These workers who have been betrayed, lied to, wrecked, destroyed, poisoned, all of these things—this becomes the breeding ground for Trumpist ideology. And the Democrats won't face this.Chris TownsendOur media largely ignores the labor movement. Our small labor press—left press—generally subscribes to the “good news only” school of journalism. So these endemic problems and even immediate crises are never dealt with. Now, some of that is because the existing labor leadership generally is not fond of criticism or is not fond of anyone pointing out shortcomings (or) mistakes.Chris TownsendWe're a cash cow—and a vote cow— to be milked routinely and extensively by this Democratic machinery… The leadership today in the bulk of the unions is an administrative layer, business union through and through to the core. The historic trade union spirit that always animated the unions in various levels is not extinguished, but in my 45 years, I would say it is at a low ebb. In the sense that we just have been sterilized because of this unconditional and unholy alliance or domination by the Democratic Party. And there's no room for spark. There's no room for dissent. There's no room for anyone to even raise the obvious.Chris Townsend[Leaders of the AFL-CIO are] basically bureaucrats in that building on 16th Street, collecting their pay and their nice pensions. Completely out of touch with millions of blue collar workers that have veered into the Republican Party channels—the so-called Reagan Democrats, which have spelled the difference in election after election for the Senate, for the House, for the Presidency.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeSantisNews 11/20/241. In his new book Hope Never Disappoints, Pope Francis writes “what is happening in Gaza has the characteristics of genocide,” and called for the situation to be “studied carefully…by jurists and international organisations,” per the Middle East Eye. These comments come on the heels of a United Nations committee report which found that Israel's actions are “consistent with characteristics of genocide,” and alleged that Israel is using starvation as a weapon of war. The Catholic pontiff has long decried violence in all forms and has previously criticized Israel's “disproportionate and immoral” actions in Gaza and Lebanon, per AP.2. On November 14th, the AP's Farnoush Amiri reported that more than 80 Congressional Democrats sent a letter to President Biden on October 29th, urging the administration to sanction Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir. Only made public after the election, this letter called for sanctions on these individuals “Given their critical roles in driving policies that promote settler violence, weaken the Palestinian Authority, facilitate de facto and de jure annexation, and destabilize the West Bank.” This letter was principally authored by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, and in addition to dozens of House Democratic signatories, was signed by no less than 17 Senators.3. Another remarkable post-election Israel story concerns outgoing Congressman Jamaal Bowman, who was ousted from his seat by a flood of AIPAC money. In an interview with Rania Khalek, Bowman relates a remarkable anecdote about the presidential campaign. Bowman says he specifically requested to campaign for Kamala Harris in Michigan – where he was so popular his AIPAC-backed primary challenger disparagingly said “[Bowman's] constituency is Dearborn, Michigan” – but the campaign ignored him and instead deployed surrogates that seemed almost designed to alienate Arab-Americans: Liz Cheney, Ritchie Torres, and Bill Clinton who went out of his way to scold these voters. These voters were likely decisive in Kamala Harris' loss in that state.4. On November 13th, Senator Bernie Sanders announced that he intends to bring Joint Resolutions of Disapproval to the Senate floor. As Sanders writes in a press release, the “The JRD is the only mechanism available to Congress to prevent an arms sale from advancing.” Unlike previous efforts however, Sanders no longer stands alone. According to Reuters, “Two of the resolutions, co-sponsored with…Senators Jeff Merkley and Peter Welch, would block the sale of 120 mm mortar rounds and joint direct attack munitions (JDAMS). A third, sponsored by Democratic Senator Brian Schatz, would block the sale of tank rounds.” Senators Elizabeth Warren and Chris Van Hollen have announced their intention to support the JRD. Certain heavy-hitting Democratic-aligned institutions have also bucked precedent to back this effort, including the massive Service Employees International Union and leading Liberal-Zionist group J Street.5. In the House, Republicans and many Democrats are pushing H.R. 9495, a bill which would grant the executive branch the power to unilaterally strip non-profit organizations of their tax-exempt status based on accusations of supporting terrorism. As the Intercept notes, “The law would not require officials to explain the reason for designating a group, nor…provide evidence.” The ACLU and over 150 other “civil liberties, religious, reproductive health, immigrant rights, human rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+, environmental, and educational organizations,” sent a letter opposing this bill in September, and celebrated when the bill was blocked on November 12th – but it is back from the grave, with Nonprofit Quarterly reporting the bill has cleared a new procedural hurdle and will now advance to the floor. Yet even if this bill is successfully blocked, little stands in the way of Republicans reviving it in the next Congress, where they will hold the House, Senate, and the Presidency.6. Back in October, we covered Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib's letter to Kroger CEO Rodney McMullen expressing grave concern over the company's decision to roll out facial recognition-based price gouging technology. According to Tlaib, Kroger has stonewalled Congress, so she is leading a group of House Democrats in a new letter demanding answers to the critical questions that remain, such as whether Kroger will use facial recognition to display targeted ads, whether consumers can opt out, and whether the company plans to sell data collected in stores. This letter is co-signed by progressives like AOC, Barbara Lee, and Eleanor Holmes Norton, among others.7. In new labor news, the NLRB has issued a rule banning anti-union “captive audience meetings,” per the Washington Post. This report notes that these meetings, in which employers warn workers of the risks in unionizing, are considered highly effective and are commonly used by companies like Amazon, Starbucks, Apple and Trader Joe's. According to the Post, Amazon alone spent more than $17 million on consults to do exactly this between 2022 and 2023. On the other hand, Bloomberg Law reports a federal judge in Texas has blocked a Labor Department rule that would have expanded overtime eligibility to four million mostly lower-level white collar workers. This was seen as among the Biden Administration's key achievements on labor rights and foreshadows the rollback of worker protections we are likely to see in a Trump presidency redux.8. Donald Trump has signaled that he will nominate Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his Secretary of Health and Human Services. Kennedy will likely face a difficult confirmation process; his past environmental activism is anathema to Republican Senators, while his more recent vaccine-skepticism is unpopular among Democrats. Yet just as Donald Trump emerged as an improbable RFK ally, a surprising opponent has emerged as well: former Vice-President Mike Pence. In a “rare” statement Pence writes “For the majority of his career, RFK Jr. has defended abortion on demand during all nine months of pregnancy, supports overturning the Dobbs decision and has called for legislation to codify Roe v Wade. If confirmed, RFK, Jr. would be the most pro-abortion Republican appointed secretary of HHS in modern history…I…urge Senate Republicans to reject this nomination.” As with other unpopular Trump nominees, many expect RFK to be appointed on an acting basis and then possibly installed via the recess appointment process.9. In some positive news, Drop Site reports that in Sri Lanka, the Leftist president Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who wrested the office from the corrupt clique that has ruled the nation since independence has won a resounding victory in the recent parliamentary elections. Reuters reports that Dissanayake's coalition won a “sweeping mandate,” with enough seats to pass his anti-corruption and poverty-alleviation agenda. More shocking is the fact that Dissanayake's coalition ran up the score in the Tamil-dominated north and east of the country. As Drop Site notes, only 15 years ago the Sri Lankan government crushed the Tamil Tigers and carried out large-scale massacres of the Tamil minority. Dissanayake has vowed to end the occupation and release Tamil political prisoners, as well as take on the International Monetary Fund which is seeking to impose economic control on the country in exchange for a fiscal bailout. Neither goal will be easily achieved, but the size of Dissanayake's victory at least provides the opportunity for him to try.10. Finally, AP reports that three of Malcolm X's daughters have filed a $100 million lawsuit against the CIA, FBI, and NYPD. This lawsuit alleges that these agencies were “aware of and…involved in the assassination plot,” and that law enforcement was engaged in a “corrupt, unlawful, and unconstitutional [relationship with]…ruthless killers that…was actively concealed, condoned, protected, and facilitated by government agents.” Two of Malcolm X's alleged assassins were exonerated in 2021 after an extensive re-investigation found that authorities withheld crucial evidence, per AP, and new evidence reported earlier this year by Democracy Now! supports the theory of an assassination plot involving collusion between the FBI and NYPD, if not others. This has been Francesco DeSantis, with In Case You Haven't Heard. Education in America is in a sad state. That is especially so with higher education, colleges and universities.Traditional education, at every turn, is being challenged, reduced, or eliminated and new educational subjects take hold. Places of higher education have become breeding grounds for radicals, revolutionary tactics, and rebellion against authority and the rule of law. Witness the takeovers and the tents, the camps, and the rabble rousers protesting, and especially exhibiting anti-Israel and anti-Semitic speech and conduct. Ironically, many of these protestors are not even college students, but rather so many paid troublemakers, paid by individuals like George Soros, and entities run by him and his cronies. They stir up hatred. They make unbelievable demands upon the administration, alumni groups, and faculty, and among other things, they demand that the universities sever all ties with the state of Israel and embrace the policy BDS, Boycott-Divest-and otherwise stop all relations with Israel and the Jews. These rabble rousers are pro-Palestinian, anti-Israel and the Jews, calling for justice on the one hand for starving and displaced Palestinians without ever mentioning the killings of Hamas, the hostages taken and still held, and the barbaric conduct of Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, Houthis, and other Arab nations which hate Israel and the Jews. Secular education has changed and may never be the same.In addition, there is now an assault by the Biden Administration on CHRISTIAN COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES. Joe Biden, unbelievably our President, purports to be Christian and Catholic and sits back, says nothing, and of course does nothing as DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Secretary Miguel Cardona goes after these Christian schools. They, thank God, refuse to toe the line, walk the liberal walk, and refuse to endorse or support the gay agenda, the attack on the family, parenting, and especially marriage, and of course abortion, all of which the Biden Administration favors and which the DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION supports.Cardona and, unbelievably so, congressional representative Rosa DeLauro, Democrat (of course) from Connecticut are the attack dogs in the lead. Said they:“WE ARE CRACKING DOWN NOT ONLY TO SHUT THEM DOWN (CHRISTIAN UNIVERSITIES) BUT TO SEND THE MESSAGE TO THEM TO NOT PREY ON STUDENTS.”The allegations they make are that these universities “lied to students about the cost of education and their programs.” Of course, there is nothing specific, no facts involved, nothing really to refute except this horribly prejudiced, biased generalization, the suit being brought by the Federal Government against the great Christian Universities, Grand Canyon University and Liberty University, incidentally America's two largest Christian institutes of higher education. I do suppose more will come but these so-called allegations are so minor, so frail, so fact-less and so obviously biased that they are almost laughable. But then again, so much of the conduct of our Federal Government under the Biden Administration is just that. I do wonder how any Jew, true Jew, or any Christian, real Christian, could ever vote for Biden or the democratic party that supports him and these absolutely absurd, prejudiced, anti-American views and policies. What a world.Grand Canyon University is the largest Christian university in America and a good one. President Brian Mueller describes these allegations, and the lawsuit which followed including the fine, as “ridiculous.” Not stopping there, Cardona and the DOE went after Liberty University and accused them, in a $37 million dollar fine, of “over alleged under-reporting of crimes.” Unbelievable. Of course, there were no facts, nothing specific, but only these biased, general allegations, really nothing more than anti-Christian at the core.Said President Brian Mueller:“It's interesting, is it not, that the two largest Christian universities in the country, ours and Liberty University, are both being fined almost the identical amount at the identical time.” Now, said Mueller:“IS THERE A CAUSE AND EFFECT HERE? I DON'T KNOW, BUT I KNOW IT'S A FACT.”Again, hear the words of Cardona and representative DeLauro:“WE ARE CRACKING DOWN NOT ONLY TO SHUT THEM DOWN BUT TO SEND A MESSAGE TO NOT PREY ON STUDENTS.”Cardona and his ilk want not only to fine these great Christian universities, but to actually close them:“TO SHUT THEM DOWN!”There really can be nothing more anti-Christian than such statements and such actions by this liberal, woke, radical, Joe Biden government and administration. Again, how can any true Christian ever vote for Biden or anyone who supports the policies he does? Can you?Said Jon Schweppe, a conservative spokesperson:“The Federal government's education agenda is punishing schools that do not conform to their progressive ideology. It is time we took a stand against this egregious abuse of power.”Not so, Mr. Schweppe. It is far past time we the Christian people took a stand against this anti-Christian bias, this woke ideological bias, and got rid of them, the evil doers. It is time we voted them out of office, them and the one who appointed them, namely Joe Biden.GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY (GTU) has as its motto that its university is:“PRIVATE, CHRISTIAN, AFFORDABLE.”It stands apart from universities across the country that are facing declining enrollment or unenrollment and the students who wish to attend GCU are only increasing. The decline in enrollment is especially severe at universities which are indoctrinating students with radical politics. They are also failing to defend the American Constitution and rule of law and especially the First Amendment with regard to freedom of religion and freedom of speech among others. The Goldwater Institute (GI), a conservative group, wrote the following:“So why then are the Feds targeting GCU, a popular university that seems to be doing everything right? That's exactly what we're going to find out.”President Mueller said that no matter what the Federal Government does, “it has had zero impact on anything that we're (GCU) doing.”Mueller went on to say:“The enrollments are just continuing to grow. The morale (of our students) is very high in terms of our faculty and staff. The campus is extremely vibrant. The students absolutely love this place. They're extremely loyal to it and so we just keep marching through it.”Amen, Christian brothers in education, march on, fight on, stand up as soldiers of the cross, and of Christian education, and stand for the excellence in education which GCU has championed all these years. Never compromise and remember the words of Winston Churchill:“NEVER, NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP!”So, GCU President Brian Mueller asks for prayer. Pray for them and the great Liberty University. But do more. Perhaps you can give. You can surely write your Congress person and make sure they know about this biased, grossly unfair attack on these Christian universities and Christianity generally, and ask them to intervene. By the way, don't bother writing to Biden and Company, for that is a letter which is a waste of time and will never be read. The attack on Liberty University and Grand Canyon University is just typical of the anti-Christian attitude and activities which are permeating our society in America, and so much of the world at large. Yet another reason, my fellow Americans and my fellow Christians, for us to stand up, put on the armor of our Lord and our faith, and:FIGHT THE FIGHT OF FAITH.The battle is here in so many different ways and it is time, aggressively and consistently to respond, to make certain that evil men like George Soros and so many others who are determined to destroy America and Christianity with it, do not prevail. Christian education is absolutely essential today, especially with secular education declining and in such disarray, more so every day. I ask, along with President Brian Mueller, that you render your full support, encouragement, prayers, and even giving to GRAND CANYON UNIVERSITY and as well LIBERTY UNIVERSITY. They stand for truth, for real Christianity, and they stand for real, solid, education in every other respect. In this world of ours, they are the best!

wo responses to retired General White Rage Miley & Why Single Topic bills can help save AmericaTime and time again, God warns us about those who consider themselves wise when the only true wisdom is that which comes from Him. In today's episode we explore how Kevin McCarthy lied to Republicans and cut a side deal with the democrats to make sure the money keeps flowing to Ukraine. This is why we need single topic bills; so much is hidden in these omnibus bills, including funding for drag shows for the Department of Defense. We also examine retired General Miley and his white rage rants against President Trump. He received a distinguished retirement, even a clap-out, but others like him who have critiqued other Presidents have received no such honors. What does God's Word say? 1 Peter 5:2-3Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.Exodus 20:15You shall not steal.Ephesians 4:25Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to your neighbor, for we are all members of one body.Episode 1,125 Links:Chair Joint Chair Milley hits Trump at retirement ceremony: "We don't take an oath to a king, or queen, or a tyrant or a dictator. House Republicans on the Appropriations Committee advanced a major domestic spending bill, which would cut education spending by 28% and, in their view, “Reins in wasteful bureaucracy and enhances oversight and accountability.”Let's dive into some of the details. Within this 28% overall cut to the Department of Education is an 80% cut to Title I – the federal government's largest K-12 funding stream supporting students from low-income families. This would be catastrophic and slash funding to levels last seen nearly 40 years ago. According to Committee Democrats, it would lead to a nationwide reduction of 220,000 teachers. While Title I funding hangs on by a thread in this bill, the legislation proposes to eliminate several programs, including: · Teacher professional development, or Title II, which now receives over $2 billion;· English language acquisition, or Title III, which serves 5 million English learners; and· Federal work study, which supports 660,000 college students. Other domestic programs outside the Department of Education would also be eliminated or see major cuts. For example, job training programs for youth funded through the Department of Labor would be eliminated. Head Start would be reduced by $750 million, cutting support for 50,000 children. AmeriCorps, which enrolls more than 200,000 people annually in service, would be cut in half. All told, the House Republican bill eliminates 61 programs in the name of “restoring fiscal responsibility” and includes several policy requirements and prohibitions to stymie President Biden's agenda. This includes a prohibition against implementing the President's Executive Orders regarding diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility and advancing racial equity and support for under-served communities. Rosa DeLauro, the leading Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, said in response: “We are witnessing a widespread attack on public education that should horrify all of us.”While the bill still has to be The bill will soon be considered by the full House of Representatives, but the Senate has yet to release its own proposal. With that chamber controlled by Democrats, their bill is likely to look pretty different. Ultimately, Congressional leaders will need to come to an agreement with the White House to keep the federal government open and operating, a process that is likely to consume the remainder of the year.

Ralph welcomes Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, Gretchen Morgenson, co-author of “These Are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs – And Wrecks – America,” where they name names in this “heads we win, tails you lose” system of predatory capitalism.Gretchen Morgenson is the senior financial reporter for the NBC News Investigative Unit. A former stockbroker, she won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002 for her “trenchant and incisive” reporting on Wall Street. Previously at the New York Times and the Wall Street Journal,” she and coauthor Joshua Rosner wrote the bestseller Reckless Endangerment: How Outsized Ambition, Greed, and Corruption Led to Economic Armageddon about the mortgage crisis. Their latest book is These Are the Plunderers: How Private Equity Runs—and Wrecks—America. The way corporate criminals get their way is by trying to make things too complex and too abstract for your daily lives. But when Gretchen [Morgenson] talks about these plunderers, and let's call them “predatory capitalists”, don't think that you're not being affected— whether your loved ones are patients in nursing homes, whether you're workers being laid off, whether you're consumers being gouged for drug or healthcare prices, whether your community's going to be hollowed out because the company that was doing okay was taken over by these vultures and closed down after they extracted the wealth.Ralph NaderIt's interesting now that David Rubenstein is retired [from the Carlyle Group], he's a philanthropist. This is what these wealthy people do once they've finished their careers and made so much money. They become philanthropists… We've all read about David Rubenstein and Steve Schwarzman and Leon Black and Henry Kravis. We read about them constantly. They are always lauded for their brilliance and their billionaire status. What we just don't hear about are the people on the other side of their transactions.Gretchen Morgenson, co-author of “These Are The Plunderers.”The disappointing thing about the Justice Department is that when they bring these cases against the companies that are doing Medicare fraud (like in the Manor Care situation), they don't move up the corporate ladder to the owner of the company. The Justice Department does the work on the particular company that is owned by private equity, but they don't go up the ladder. And that has a way of allowing the firms—like Carlyle in the Manor Care case— to escape scrutiny and to escape accountability. So that would be an ideal thing to change.Gretchen Morgenson co-author of “These Are The Plunderers.”In Case You Haven't Heard 1. Amid the debt limit fight, progressives are calling for President Biden to invoke the 14th amendment, which they believe would allow Biden to bypass the Republican House and raise the debt limit without concessions like adding further work requirements to public benefits. In a press conference by the Senate progressives, John Fetterman of Pennsylvania said "This is the whole reason why the 14th Amendment exists, & we need to be prepared to use it. And, if our unelected Supreme Court Justices try to block the use of the 14th amendment and blow up our economy, that's on them.” However, POLITICO reports that the administration is privately telling progressives to stand down. Instead, the White House seems more interested in negotiating with Speaker McCarthy, even if that means caving to outrageous Republican demands.2. As the Writers Guild strike grinds on – at a cost of $30 million per day according to Deadline – the Screen Actors Guild is now on the verge of their own strike. Last week, SAG-AFTRA's National Board voted unanimously to ask members for strike authorization, and the Daily Beast reported that SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher urged members to “make three a charm with an emphatic ‘yes' for a strike authorization vote!” adding that to do so would be “an unprecedented show of solidarity.” An actor's strike against the studios has not happened since 1980.3. Last week, Senator Bernie Sanders introduced the Healthy Families Act of 2023, which would guarantee 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave. This bill features a companion in the House, led by Rep. Rosa DeLauro, and carries the support of 122 members of the House and Senate. Sanders is quoted saying “It is time to end this absurdity...It is time Congress passed this legislation to ensure workers receive the basic dignity and benefits that they deserve.” The introduction of this legislation comes on the heels of the reintroduction of a Medicare for All bill in this Congress.4. A damning new report in the Wall Street Journal indicates that “Jeffrey Epstein discovered that Bill Gates had an affair with a Russian bridge player” and later used this knowledge to attempt to threaten the Microsoft co-founder. The report goes on to say that “at the time, Epstein was trying to set up a multibillion-dollar charitable fund with JPMorgan...[which] hinged on securing support from Gates.” When this money was not forthcoming, Epstein resorted to blackmail. This gives the public our clearest idea yet as to the nuts and bolts of the Epstein criminal enterprise.5. POLITICO is reporting on a rumor concerning Senator Dianne Feinstein, Representative Adam Schiff, and the Pelosi family. The former Speaker herself has endorsed Schiff in the upcoming California Senate primary and has long groomed him as a political protege. He currently holds a $15 million advantage over his nearest opponent. Yet, if Feinstein – who has appeared deeply addled in recent public appearances – were to resign, Governor Newsom would have the opportunity to appoint a Senator to the vacant seat, and has pledged to appoint a Black woman. Rep. Barbara Lee, a progressive Black congresswoman representing the Bay Area, is among the candidates to replace Feinstein, and would therefore have a strong chance of being appointed. Per the report, Nancy Corinne Prowda, Pelosi's eldest child, is a top aide to Senator Feinstien, and a “Pelosi family confidant” insinuated that she is angling to keep Feinstein in her seat, not for the benefit of Californians, but for the benefit of Adam Schiff. 6. The LA Times reports that “Nearly three dozen deputies have been ordered to come in for questioning, show their tattoos and give up the names of any other deputies similarly sporting ink connecting them to…the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's…deputy gangs.” This demand came in a letter from county Inspector General Max Huntsman to 35 deputies suspected of being members of either the Executioners or the Banditos, two of the most notorious among these police gangs. Huntsman is quoted saying “The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department conducted incomplete internal affairs investigations into the Banditos and Executioners, failing to identify all members…California's new gang law addresses discrimination based on race and gender and gives inspectors general enhanced authority to collect evidence. We're using that authority to complete the investigations by directing deputies to show their tattoos and tell us who else has them.”7. The Sierra Club is currently in the midst of a labor battle. The New Republic reports that, in an attempt to resolve their budget shortfall, the group has announced “massive layoffs,” the scale of which still remains unclear. This announcement set off a “fractious battle” between the top leadership and the Progressive Workers Union, which has two bargaining units representing nearly 400 Sierra Club employees around the country. Thus far union has filed two unfair labor practice charges with the National Labor Relations Board; the first “accuses the Club of failing to provide necessary information for bargaining,” and another alleging that “management is violating its collective bargaining agreement and is bargaining in bad faith.”8. Democracy Now! reports that conservative, US-backed Ecuadoran president Guillermo Lasso has “dissolved the opposition-led National Assembly in a move widely seen as an effort to block efforts to impeach him.” Lasso dissolved the assembly as it held its first hearing on corruption and embezzlement allegations against Lasso. Lasso invoked a never-before-used constitutional power allowing him to “rule by decree” until new elections are held.9. In an almost unbelievable story, Live Science is reporting that Orcas have “sunk 3 boats in Europe and appear to be teaching others to do the same.” The piece goes on to say that scientists believe the attacks are coordinated, and began following an orca experiencing a "critical moment of agony." Further, they believe “the behavior is spreading among the population through social learning.” This is a stark reminder that we as a species impact our environment and that, sometimes, there are consequences. Many of us are familiar with bribes to get us to eat our vegetables when we were kids. It was either "you can have a yummy dessert if you eat your vegetables"... Or "you cannot have a yummy dessert if you don't eat your vegetables". Is either option a good idea if the goal is to improve our intake of vegetables as adults? Probably not. Today I look into positive and negative incentives to eat healthier and I cite some research studies that suggest both types of incentives can help if designed correctly. But first, I discuss a bunch of research articles on the benefits of something called sulfuraphane, found in the cabbages and in broccoli. An article listing the benefits and providing just enough explanation can be found here. An example of a positive incentive to eat healthy produce is already in play. It is a USDA program (therefore available in all 50 states) and it's called the "healthy incentives program" or HIP. It is hugely successful in Massachusetts, but this program relies on states to initiate it in their own state. This HIP program provides $40-$60 worth of free, mostly organic, produce and nuts to all those who have SNAP or food stamps. This additional funding is on top of the current SNAP benefits and only adds healthy food to the current allotment. You can read about the program in Massachusetts in this article. I am very familiar with this because I was the one who presented it to my retired Congressman John Tierney. That allowed me to meet Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, who ran with it and developed it into the successful program currently in place. There is also a lot of discussion and some studies testing whether or not negative incentives work to improve healthy eating habits. An example of a negative incentive would be a tax on soda or saturated fat. A good article with a discussion about the success of a tax on soda and/or saturated fat can be found here. As always, feel free to contact me on my website, Healing Outside the Box. If you would like assistance with healthy recipe ideas or would like the support of a nutritionist, I have a variety of services I offer that can be found here.
For years, politicians in the United States have invoked the rhetoric of being “pro-family.” But what does that really mean? For justice-seekers, it means policies and policy proposals that would help families to flourish: the Child Tax Credit, the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, Medicaid expansion, and others. In this episode, we talk to a longtime champion of pro-family policy on Capitol Hill: Rep. Rosa DeLauro. DeLauro, who represents Connecticut's third congressional district, shares why these policies are so important to her and how her Catholic faith informs her advocacy. Being pro-family also means being pro-woman, and Sister Robbie Pentecost, O.S.F. shares about her encounters with women whose lives are touched and transformed by the New Opportunity School for Women in Berea, Kentucky. Former President Donald Trump's choice for Pennsylvania governor has won his primary, and his Senate pick is locked in an exceedingly close contest as the former president works to expand his hold on the Republican Party. Trump's late endorsement helped put the already surging far-right state senator Doug Mastriano over the top Tuesday in the GOP governor's primary in one of the nation's premier battleground states. But Mehmet Oz, the celebrity heart surgeon endorsed by Trump, is locked with former hedge fund manager David McCormick in a race that is too early to call. On the Democratic side, progressive Lt. Gov. John Fetterman easily secured his party's Senate nomination. In another of the night's closely watched races, progressive John Fetterman easily won Pennsylvania's Democratic Senate primary, just days after a stroke sent him to the hospital. U.S. Rep. Ted Budd and former state Supreme Court Chief Justice Cheri Beasley have won their respective Senate primaries in North Carolina. Budd on Tuesday won the 14-candidate Republican primary over the likes of former Gov. Pat McCrory and U.S. Rep. Mark Walker. Beasley was the front-runner for the Democratic nomination, which 11 people sought. Beasley and Budd will compete in November to succeed retiring Sen. Richard Burr. Former Oregon House Speaker Tina Kotek has won the Democratic gubernatorial primary governor, beating state Treasurer Tobias Read in a victory for the party's progressive wing. Russia says that nearly 1,000 Ukrainian troops who doggedly defended a giant steelworks in Mariupol have surrendered. The plant became a symbol of their country's resistance. The announcement Wednesday comes as the battle for the strategic port city appeared all but over. Ukraine ordered the fighters to save their lives and said their mission to tie up Russian forces is now complete. But it has not called the column of soldiers walking out of the plant a surrender. The fighters face an uncertain fate. Ukraine says they hope for a prisoner swap but Russia is vowing to try at least some of them for war crimes. Both Sweden and Finland have applied to join NATO. A new report says decisions by Presidents Donald Trump and Joe Biden to pull all U.S. troops out of Afghanistan were the key factors in the collapse of that nation's military, leading to the Taliban takeover last year. The House panel investigating the Jan. 6 insurrection at the U.S. Capitol is rejecting a request from the Justice Department for access to the committee's interviews, for now. Rep. Bennie Thompson says the Justice Department made the request as part of its ongoing criminal investigation into the attack. But Thompson, the committee's chairman, said Tuesday it was “premature” for the committee to share its work at this point because the panel's probe is ongoing. The Heat knock off the Celtics, the Magic get the NBA's top draft pick, the Lightning and Avalanche win on ice and Aaron Judge flexes his muscles again. Correspondent Josh Rowntree reports. President Joe Biden mourned with Buffalo's grieving families on Tuesday, then exhorted the nation to reject what he angrily labeled the poison of white supremacy. He said the nation must “reject the lie” of the racist “replacement theory” espoused by the shooter who killed 10 Black people at a supermarket. Biden declared that “evil will not win” in America. “Replacement theory” is the idea that white people are being intentionally replaced by people of color. It's another manifestation of the bigotry Biden vowed to confront while running for president. Biden says it was the 2017 white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, and President Donald Trump's ambivalent reaction that drove him to run. The fall of Mariupol appears at hand as Ukraine is moving to abandon a sprawling steel plant where its soldiers had held out under relentless bombardment for months, which would make it the biggest city to fall into Russian hands. Much of it, though, has been reduced to rubble. Ukraine estimates some 20,000 civilians have been killed in the Russian assault on Mariupol, a city on the Azov Sea that stands between the Russian mainland and the Crimean Peninsula, which Russia seized from Ukraine in 2014. Hundreds of Ukrainian fighters have left the Azovstal steel plant and turned themselves over to Russian hands. House Democrats have unveiled a $28 million emergency spending bill to address the shortage of infant formula in the United States. Rep. Rosa DeLauro, the chair of the House Appropriations Committee, says the bill would help the Food and Drug Administration take important steps to restore the formula supply in a safe and secure manner. U.S. regulators have authorized a COVID-19 vaccine booster for healthy children ages 5 to 11. Everyone 12 and older already was supposed to get one booster dose for the best protection against the newest variants of the coronavirus. There were 1.7 million weddings in 2020, a drop of 17% from the year before. The number of U.S. marriages in 2020 was the lowest recorded since 1963. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention released an analysis of the data Tuesday. The pandemic threw many marriage plans into disarray with stay-at-home orders and restrictions on large gatherings. The CDC has not yet released data on marriages in 2021. Queen Elizabeth II made a surprise appearance at central London's Paddington station. The 96-year-old monarch has reduced most of her public engagements. But she appeared Tuesday at the train station and beamed as she unveiled a plaque stating she officially opened the Elizabeth line, named in her honor. Prince William says he hopes more soccer players will have the confidence to be open about their sexuality after Jake Daniels became the first active player in the English men's professional game to announce he is gay. Nearly 43,000 people were killed on U.S. roads last year. That's the highest number in 16 years as Americans returned to the highways after the pandemic forced many to stay at home. Traffic deaths rose 10.5% over 2020, the largest percentage increase since the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration began its fatality data collection in 1975. An outbreak of avian flu is forcing farmers to cull their flocks and leading to concerns about even higher food prices. While it doesn't pose a significant threat to humans, the outbreak is prompting a new wave of some of the same conspiracy theories that emerged from the COVID-19 pandemic. Experts who study misinformation say claims that the avian flu is a bioweapon or an elaborate hoax reflect a deepening distrust of the media and scientific experts. For poultry farmers and animal health officials in affected states, however, the flu poses a threat that's all too real for both their animals and their local economies. U.S. retail sales rose 0.9% in April, a solid increase that underscores Americans' ability to keep ramping up spending even as inflation persists at nearly a 40-year high. The Commerce Department said Tuesday that the increase was driven by greater sales of cars, electronics, and at restaurants. Even adjusting for inflation, which was 0.3% on a monthly basis in April, sales increased. A handful of U.S. hospitals are facing a financial crisis that officials say was caused by the federal government's rules for pandemic relief money. A trio of hospitals in Alabama, Kansas and New Mexico say they're not getting as much assistance as other hospitals because they're so new they can't prove financial losses from before the pandemic. In rural southwest Alabama, Thomasville Regional Medical Center says it's in danger of closing after just two years. Federal health officials say all three hospitals have gotten some money from the CARES Act, and no health providers are getting all their losses reimbursed. —The Associated Press See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
This article was written by S.D. Wells from Natural News. I did my podcast based on this concept and expanded on what appears to be a potentially viable theory. With midterms on the horizon, several Democrat politicians suddenly have COVID in preparation for promoting MAIL-IN BALLOTSBlame it on partying and voting. Within a week, nearly a dozen House Democrats claim they tested positive for Wuhan Flu after they sat around boozing together mask-less while talking political strategies for the upcoming midterm elections. The rest claim they caught the scamdemic disease while "late night" voting for their next spending (money-laundering) bill. It's all just part of their push for midterm mail-in ballots, so their cohorts can have even the slightest chance of victory, after these last couple years of their absolute dismal performance.Sure, knock back some whiskey sours and come up with a corrupt plan to steal the mid-term elections, maybe by leading by example? See, the lesson is… if you go out and party and vote while drunk, you'll catch a death of a cold… COVID-19 that is. Didn't all of these House Democrats swear up and down they got vaccinated? They sure do have some explaining to do.Political STUNT? Nine House Democrats test positive for COVID at virtually the same time as we turn the corner towards mid-term electionsOh, they are hurting, and not from COVID. Every scamdemic protocol that the Democrats pushed has turned into epic failure, including quarantines, lockdowns, social distancing, masks and especially the beloved clot shots. The economy is in the crapper. Millions have lost their jobs due to force-vaccination mandates. Inflation is skyrocketing daily. So what do House Democrats do about it? They party in Philadelphia at a "retreat" where the party favors must have been PCR-test kits.Other "Hypocrites of the House" spent hours this same week on the floor maskless while voting for their latest money-laundering spending Bill, after preaching to Americans to never take off their masks, even indoors, and be sure to get "fully vaccinated" for COVID, including every booster "recommended" by the CDC. Then they all got on buses and headed to a big party. Surely they weren't wearing masks on the bus either. It's all just smoke and mirrors, like a David Copperfield show. An act. A staged event where a bunch of House Hypocrites "catch deadly COVID" while voting mask-less, to convince the populace they should stay home and vote from there, where it's safe, and then just head to the "drop boxes" with their crates full of votes late at night, when nobody is around to spread the Wuhan Flu (or catch them in the act). The scamdemic rages on… even Kamala "Bad Knees" Harris claims her husband caught Wuhan Flu at the retreatDemocrats want to scare the public just enough to vie for mail-in ballots for every election, but not frustrate everyone too much with other mandates that might ruin Democrat votes for midterms. Surely, after the elections, should they win, every mandate will be put back in place, strictly again, with no exceptions (while the politicians continue to party mask-less).Though fully-vaccinated lawmakers are NOT required to wear a mask, they all seem to be catching COVID anyway, according to their own stories published all over mainstream media. What does that say about the "efficacy" of the so-called "vaccines?" Sounds like if you get the COVID jabs you should be REQUIRED to wear your mask at all times, if we're using real-life situations as proof of the need for precautionary measures.Who says they have COVID from partying and/or late night voting at the House of Horrors? Nancy "Dominion" Pelosi, Representative Madeleine Dean of Pennsylvania, Gerald E. Connolly of Virginia, Peter Welch of Vermont, Zoe Lofgren of California, Kim Schrier of Washington, Rosa DeLauro of Connecticut, Jared Golden of Maine, Joe Neguse of Colorado, and Andy Kim of New Jersey. All of this, somehow, within one hour.Nobody is sure how many shots of tequila were swallowed before, during and after the rapid antigen tests the reps took in their hotel rooms. Resident Biden also attended the "retreat," but he somehow tested negative (only three percent of people who take the PCR tests, whether healthy or not, test negative). Jen "illogical" Psaki said EVERY representative at the retreat had been vaccinated. So much for herd theory, huh? This is a huge reminder, if true, that the COVID vaccines do not work at all. The DC elites think they can pull the wool over everyone's eyes, and these staged events are not helping them gain votes for the midterms. Either way, they lose big.Tune your internet to Censored.news for huge swaths of truth news about the upcoming midterms that's being censored from the rest of media as you read this.Sources for this article include:NaturalNews.comTheGatewayPundit.comReuters.comAxios.comSupport your immune system the right way with Dr. Zev Zelenko's brand new Z-DTOX nutraceuticals. FUENTE: WBUR, NPR

Today on Sojourner Truth: New freedom riders are descending on Washington DC, even as the Rev. William Barber, joint coordinator of the Poor People's Campaign: A National Call for Moral Revival, along with the Rev. Jesse Jackson and other religious leaders, were arrested during civil disobedience. Their cause? The right to vote. On Tuesday, June 22, the Republican Party blocked opening debate on the For the People Act, a key voting rights bill put forward by the Democrats. All members of the Republican Party in the Senate voted against opening debate on the bill, thus killing the legislation. Is there a way forward for those who defend protecting voter rights? What next steps will the movement for the right to vote take next? Our guest is Barbara Arnwine, a veteran civil rights and human rights leader and advocate. She is currently the President & Founder of the Transformative Justice Coalition. Excitement across the country builds as millions of families across the United States will begin receiving monthly child tax credit payments for as high as $300 per child, if they are under 6 years old, $250 per child if they are between 6 and 17 years old. Payments are also available for those whose income is generally too low to pay taxes. Many are hailing this as breakthrough legislation, attacking child poverty on a level not seen since the New Deal. But it is not yet permanent and members of Congress are working on legislation to make sure that Child Tax Credit continues after its one-year mandate as part of the Biden-Harris American Rescue Plan. Today, we hear a presentation delivered by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro, a Democrat of Connecticut, to an audience of income rights campaigners. For our weekly Earth Watch, we speak with Jason Davidson, a Senior Food and Agriculture Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, supporting the Bee Action Campaign. Prior to joining Friends of the Earth, he interned at Climate Reality Project and served as a research assistant in the Geography Department at George Washington University.

Have you ever wondered why people are hungry in a world that produces more than enough food to feed them? Very few people in the world could address that question like today's guest on the Leading Voices in Food, Billy Shore. About Billy Shore Billy is the executive chair of No Kid Hungry and its parent organization Share our Strength. He and his sister Debbie founded Share our Strength in 1984 and led the organization in raising more than $600 million dollars to fight hunger and poverty. He spent the early years of his career in national politics serving on senatorial and presidential campaign staffs and serving as chief of staff to former US senator Robert Kerrey. He returned to the national stage in 2014 when Congress appointed him to the National Commission on Hunger, a bipartisan group given the task of agreeing on the best ways to effectively use existing programs and funds to address hunger in the United States. Interview Summary Why are people hungry in a world that produces enough food? How do we have hungry children in particular? Yeah, especially in the United States. It really makes no sense and I wouldn't have to give you probably even any facts or figures about hunger at all for you to say there's no excuse for hunger in our country. Kids in America are not hungry for reasons that kids around the rest of the world are hungry. It's not because of war or famine or drought, it's not because of lack of food or in our case it's not even because of lack of food programs. We have all of those and abundance. So what we failed to do is connect kids to these programs and these resources that exist for them. I think it's important to just think about hunger as the symptom of a deeper problem of poverty. And unfortunately the kind of structural poverty that exists in our country has meant that even when the economy is doing well as it is now, a lot of people still get left behind. So let's paint the domestic picture of food insecurity in the United States. Who's most likely to be food insecure? How serious is the problem? Well, we have focused mostly on children, so we've got one in six kids in this country who live in a household where there's food insecurity. They're not all food insecure themselves, but we've got 22 million kids on the school lunch program. So they're getting a free or reduced price lunch based on their family's income being a certain percentage of poverty, pretty much close to the poverty line, which is, let's say $24,000 for a family of four. So, you've got an awful lot of kids who were still dealing with hunger and, you know, at risk of if not missing meals at risk of having meals that are compromised nutritionally. What is the geographic distribution of this look like? Urban, rural, both? Yeah, hunger is pretty much everywhere now. Certainly urban and rural, certainly. There's obviously concentrations of poverty in large urban areas. In some ways they're actually easier to address him to service because you know, how to deliver the product to the kids, you know, where they are, as opposed to rural areas. I was just recently in rural Montana on a native American reservation and it is very hard to serve places like that. But it's also old and young. It's not any particular population. We focused on children because they're not only the most vulnerable developmentally, but the least responsible for the situation that they're in. And the good news here, we're kind of talking about the bad news...the good news is that it's a solvable problem. One of the things we asked ourselves in the work we're doing at Share our Strength is something that the writer Jonathon Kozol talks about, which is how do you pick up a problem that is big enough to matter but small enough to win. And so when we looked at all the things that we cared about, famine in Ethiopia and the Sudan and seniors who are hungry and veterans who are hungry when we looked at kids in the United States who were hungry on a chronic basis. That felt big enough to matter small enough to win. And it is a solvable problem because we've got these, particularly not just the food in this country, but food programs like school lunch, school breakfast or summer meals, the SNAP food stamp program and WIC. A child may potentially live in a house where there's food insecurity, but the child may not be food insecure. What does that suggest happening within a family? Yeah, it suggests a lot of stresses in the family. And so you have much higher levels of household food insecurity than you do a child food insecurity because a lot of families that the adults would do what you expect them to do, which is to protect the kids. So they sacrifice a little bit. The number of kids who were actually missing meals now is getting down to a very small number. And since 2008, between 2008 and 2018, the number of kids who present with what our government calls very low food security, which is the most severe form of food insecurity, that number's been cut in half. It's now about 250,000 kids. What is the impact on a child of food insecurity or common chronic malnutrition? Well, I think there's a whole set of impacts, some of which are physical, literally in terms of preventing them from growing as healthy as they should. The biggest impact that I think we see is the impact in schools. Kids who were not able to pay attention, not focused, not on time, not on task. But that's changing. I was just at a school in San Francisco called Reading Elementary School and I got so excited about what I saw there because 99 percent of the kids live below the poverty line. Ninety nine percent. It's on the edge of the Tenderloin neighborhood. Twelve percent of the kids are living in homeless facilities. Fifty percent of them have one parent who's an immigrant. But none of them are hungry anymore. Their school has breakfast, their school has a second chance breakfast--so if you can't get there before school starts, which a lot of kids can't there's a breakfast between first and second period. They have a lunch program, and then they have an afterschool supper program. So what used to be almost like a sentence to be, you know, if you're living with this kind of poverty, you're almost sentenced to be hungry, now is no longer the case. And I think that's what we're starting to see in a lot of schools around the country. Who pays for those services? Well, it's combination of public and private. The school meals programs are 100 percent federally reimbursed. And the big problem we've had in the big focus of our No Kid Hungry Campaign has been to make sure that everybody who's eligible for these programs is participating. So I mentioned 22 million kids getting a free or reduced price school launch. All $20 million are eligible for breakfast as well. But when we started focusing on this in 2008, only 9 million of the 22 million were getting breakfast. So why is that? Because at lunch they're already there. At breakfast you have to get there earlier. Sometimes families can't get their kids to school earlier based on mom and dad's work schedule or the bus driver's schedule. There's the stigma attached to being the kids who go early to school and sit with all the other kids who had to go early as opposed to lunch when everybody's there. So there's a lot of reasons for this dropoff, but we found some very simple ways to fix it. The simplest of all being, if you move breakfast from the cafeteria to the first 10 minutes of first period the participation rates go up from half the kids getting breakfast. About 95 percent of them getting breakfast. And so we've added 3 million kids to the school breakfast program just in the last six years. And we've seen all the things that you would want to see. Test scores, improving attendance, improving visit to the nurse's office diminishing. If one believes that children should be protected and that public funds should be used for this, if you begin with that premise, there are a lot of ways you can invest in children. You could try to improve the schools, you could do drug abuse prevention. Is addressing food and hunger related issues and especially good investment? I think so. I think it's one of the most fundamental ways to invest in kids. We just had a conversation with some foundation leaders who were asking us all kinds of questions about how we measure the results of feeding kids and have we measured test scores and have we measured improved attendance and so forth. And we have. And we've seen some very good results. We had Deloitte do a study for us and it showed in the schools where we were working with these alternative breakfast programs, Math scores were 17 percent higher. Attendance rates were several days longer. But one of the things that I said to this group that was pressing us, and I appreciated their questions, was if we didn't have these results, would you then be in favor of stopping feeding these kids? I mean, this is so fundamental and it's so basic whether you have these positive metrics or not. I think everybody knows that it makes sense to feed kids as you send them off to try to learn for six or seven hours a day. You've made a good argument for there being a moral imperative to do this to children just deserve access to food that can nurture them in so many ways. But then it also pays off in terms of improved test scores and performance in school and things. I think that's right. You know, James Baldwin, the author once said these are all our children and we will either profit or pay for whatever they become. We will profit by our pay for whatever they become. So it's not just about feeding kids. This is about all of us, right? We all either suffer the consequences or reap the benefits if our kids are not in a position to join our economy, to be fully productive, to be good learners. All the rest. There's a big world of malnutrition and hunger and food insecurity outside the US. How does an organization like Share our Strength make decisions about deploying resources domestically and internationally? Well when we started charity strength back in 1984, it was a consequence of the Ethiopian famine, which at the time was this terrible catastrophic humanitarian issue. And we ultimately got more focused on domestic work here in the US. In 1984, when we started, it was in the middle of the Reagan administration. There had been budget cuts and homelessness was on the increase in the United States. So we shifted most of our focus to domestic. And one of the things we found was that many of our donors and supporters wanted us to concentrate on our own backyard. But we still felt this pull to be working, this tug to be working internationally. And so we're now in the process of kind of building that back. We're working on some school meal programs in India, in Zambia, and some other places. It's very hard to prioritize given the level of need outside the United States and I wouldn't be as quick to say that it's, as I said at the beginning of our conversation that it's a solvable problem outside the United States. Some of the poverty is so severe. But there are 58 countries now that have school meal programs and our government actually supports them. Some of the leaders in Congress who helped build the school lunch in the school breakfast program in the United States, on a bipartisan basis, senator George McGovern and Senator Bob Dole, one of the last things they did in their senate tenure was to create the McGovern Dole International Feeding Program, which is, I think administered by USAID or our State Department. And we actually help schools around the world to have the school meal programs that we have. You were involved in the influential Commission on Hunger report that I mentioned in the introduction that was a bipartisan effort. Could you tell us about that? Yeah. There was a congressman from Virginia who served for many years and right as he was leaving after maybe 25, 30 years in Congress, Frank Wolfe, cared about the issue of hunger. He particularly cared about the issue of food waste and he had a inserted into, you know, one of these last minute, late night, nobody paying attention omnibus appropriations bills a provision that there should be a National Commission on Hunger to report to Congress on solutions for addressing hunger. And so there were 10 members, five of us appointed by the Republican leadership, five by the democratic leadership. And we went around the country actually, one of the things we were urged to do is not just sitting in a conference room, but go out and talk to people are hungry. Go to Arkansas, go to the Mississippi Delta, go to native American reservations. We traveled all over the country to try to bear witness to what the issues are, to see what people were struggling with and then to come back with some bipartisan solutions. So we ended up with a unanimous report that was very, very strongly in favor, surprisingly, given the number of a Republican colleagues I had on it, but very strong in favor of the SNAP food stamp program as one of the mainstays of how we fight hunger in this country. And a whole set of other recommendations around how to make sure that the foods that people are able to access through federal nutrition programs are healthier for them as well. Bipartisan support seems to be in short supply these days. How in the world did five Democrats and Republicans coming together? Yeah. Well, one of the first things we did is we said to ourselves, you know, this report will only get any attention at all is if we're unanimous. If we make this statement, if we're not like everything else that happens in Washington where half of us say one thing and have say another and nobody really knows who to believe. So, at every step in the, at every juncture in this kind of 18 month journey that we took together, we said no, we've got to make sure that we're all together on this. And we argued things out. We spent a lot of time and we circulated drafts. It was almost like a process where like justices on some court would keep circulating opinions back and forth to each other and editing each other's opinions till we got to some consensus. But I think it was worth it. And nobody, you know, nobody had an agenda. Nobody was trying to score political points. What's so frustrating today in the house or the Senate, and I've worked in the Senate for 13 years as you'd mentioned, is that there's a reflexive opposition to whatever the other side proposes, almost blindly. And if you think about a chamber, again the Senate where almost every vote is 51 to 49, why even bother to go there if you're not going to get to use your own brain in your own voice? What was the impact of the report? Well, it was, you know, like anything else, it was a somewhat incremental in terms of the changes, but a number of members of congress particularly who are active on hunger issues. Congresswoman Rosa Delauro, Congressman Jim McGovern, some governors around the country, a Republican governor of Nevada Sandoval, each took elements of it and tried to build it into their policy agendas. I hear that you have an interesting story to tell about how breakfast, lunch, school, lunch and breakfast programs got started? Yeah. Well, you know, they're the main stay of our, our anti-hunger work now, but they really came about after World War II. I think it was in 1946, a group of generals and admirals came to Congress to testify that by the end of the war and say our troops were not healthy enough to fight. That they were too malnourished, that just weren't strong enough literally. And so they said, you know, if we're going to be prepared, if our nation is going to be prepared to fight a war, as long as World War II turned out to be, our involvement there was I guess about four years or a little bit more, we need to start investing in feeding kids and nourishing them. We've done that as a country. But even today, only 25 percent of all American youth between the ages of 18 and 34 are fit to join the military. In some cases it's obesity or malnutrition. In some cases it's drug or alcohol addiction. In some cases it's criminal records. But to think that in a world as dangerous as ours is now and how extended the United States is around the world, that only 25 percent of our youth are capable of serving, and of those issues that I described, the biggest one is a malnourishment and obesity.
