Republicans are aiming to gut Medicaid to pay for trillions in tax cuts for the richest of Americans, and they're trying to hide it. The Dems need to bring the DC conversation home—hold town halls everywhere, tell voters what would happen, especially in rural MAGA areas where hospitals and trauma centers will close. Meanwhile, Trump is turning chaos at the border into chaos in the streets by having ICE grab people who haven't even committed crimes to pump up his deportation numbers. Plus, Elon's insatiable and scandalous quest for more money, the Dems evolving media strategy, and how to help maintain mental health during these stressful times.  Sen. As a second grader, Zerlina Maxwell was obsessed with politics, so it was no surprise that she would go on to work for two presidential campaigns. Today, she is a highly regarded political analyst, a best-selling author, and host of 'Mornings with Zerlina' on SiriusXM. A little over a month into this presidency, we are already in the 'find out' stage. With a wealth of experience, Zerlina joins Sophia to help break down the current state of things, what Democrats missed with their messaging, how they can improve communication to connect with everyday people, and the valuable lessons she learned from working on the campaigns of Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In early June 2020, Christina Gessler and Zerlina Maxwell met remotely to discuss Maxwell's soon-to-be-released book. This episode is an encore presentation of that discussion. As we watch the race to the 2024 United States presidential election, we revisit this conversation from four years ago to reconsider lessons learned and those ignored in the race to the 2020 presidential election. Today's book is: The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide (Legacy Lit, 2020), by Zerlina Maxwell, which examines the past and present problems of the Left. After working on presidential campaigns for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, Maxwell gained first-hand knowledge of what liberals have and have not been doing right over the past few elections. Ultimately, these errors worked in President Donald Trump's favor in 2016; he ran a campaign on white identity politics, successfully tapping into white male angst and resistance. In 2020, after the Democratic Party's most historically diverse pool of presidential candidates dwindled down to Joe Biden, once again an older white man, Maxwell asked: what now, liberals? Fueled by Maxwell's trademark wit and candor, The End of White Politics dismantles the problems of the Left, challenging everyone from young "Bernie Bros" to power players in the "Billionaire Boys' Club." Whether tackling the white privilege that enabled Mayor Pete Buttigieg's presidential run, the controversial #HashtagActivism of the Millennial generation, the massive individual donations that sway politicians toward maintaining the status quo of income inequality, or the lingering racism that debilitated some Democratic presidential contenders and cut their promising campaigns short, Maxwell pulls no punches in her critique. Underlying all of these individual issues, Maxwell argues, is the "liberal-minded" party's struggle to engage women and communities of color, and its preoccupation with catering to the white, male working class that threatens to be its most lethal shortfall. Our guest is: Zerlina Maxwell, the host of Mornings with Zerlina on Sirius XM, and the Director of Progressive Programming for SiriusXM. She was the Director of Progressive Media for Hillary Clinton's 2016 presidential campaign, and acted as a campaign spokesperson for the Presidential Debates. She writes for a variety of national media outlets, is a frequent college campus speaker, and is the author of The End Of White Politics: How To Heal Our Liberal Divide. She has a law degree from Rutgers Law School Newark and a B.A. in International Relations from Tufts University. Our host is: Dr. Christina Gessler, the producer of the Academic Life podcast. She holds a PhD in history, which she uses to explore what stories we tell and what happens to those we never tell. Welcome to Academic Life, the podcast for your academic journey—and beyond! Another series of reviews published in The Hartford Courant followed. By the time she reached college, Aisha was writing for the literary magazine and interning at a local radio station, ABC-affiliate as a writer in the news department and in the A&R department of an independent record company. As a graduate student at Fisk University, Aisha asked Dr. Raymond Winbush to chair her thesis because 1) he was one of the most renowned voices in black culture and academia, and 2) he was a Prince fan. His scholarship and guidance led Aisha to an early career as a professor of social sciences and later an administrator in higher education. Aisha has also served as a director of education and policy research centers and on the staff of legislative commissions. THE THESIS: Unless we invite God back into everything and, in so doing, utterly change America, we can all expect many more mass murder events as we will absolutely suffer through this next few years.   THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES:  Jeremiah 2 - Israel forsakes God 1 John 1:8-10 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us. THE NEWS & COMMENT: Single out and dehumanize groups - never remind people that God loves all of us equally Billy DeBlasio expressed concern for the same Jewish Community he threatened with arrest for gathering together for religious ceremonies and traditions Ignore obvious cries for help from young people and make it nearly impossible for society to helo them while correcting behaviors  Highland Park shooting suspect was ‘known to law enforcement' The suspect had a fascination with mass shootings and rapped about it. Break people's minds by creating a societal environment where the only want to feel psychologically safe is to accept absolute gibberish and pretend it's true - never speak God's Word as truth. The alleged murderer had pronouns in his profile Isolate kids with only pseudo-connections, never speak of the Body of Christ, never even bring it up.  His “likes” on social media lean left, but also decry racism and ant-semitism  In other words, the young man is probably absolutely psychotic . . . so, was that always the case? Alex Berenson has been tracking something for about a decade that may well have contributed to this. And, HUGE surprise, it's being pushed on American kids . . . The New York Times has woken up on cannabis, all at once. This is from an article today. NOT yesterday's - a different one. - June 24, 2022 Cannabis may now cause one in four new cases of schizophrenia in men; This stunning figure - from a Danish researcher last week at a top international psychiatry conference - spells a mental health crisis and a crushing blow for advocates of cannabis legalization And, WAY, WAY back to the massacre of children and teachers in Texas--a massacre cops refused to try to stop--we have this reference, also tracked by Berenson: Cannabis causes psychosis. Psychosis causes violence. You know what else causes psychosis? The Party's constant terrorizing of young people and rewarding extremist babble . . .  [AUDIO] - MSNBC Puts On Radical Youngster Decrying 'Clear Descent Into Fascism' . . . On Saturday morning, MSNBC host Zerlina Maxwell interviewed 20-year-old radical leftist Jamie Margolin, “founder of the youth-led climate activist group Zero Hour.” The rabble-rouser went straight for the panic button, saying recent Supreme Court decisions on abortion and climate are a “judicial coup” and a “clear descent into fascism.” Maxwell began by explaining the Supreme Court gave a setback to Team Biden's "ambitious climate agenda," and that's "a really big deal." On this episode of the pod, Amanda Weinstein, Jasmine Clark, and Rachel Vindman talk about sex, baby... comprehensive sex education, that is! Sex ed overlaps with every other issue we've been discussing this year: book bans, abortion rights, trans kids, accusations of “grooming,” even gun violence. It's clear that right-wing politicians care more about maintaining power than they do about the lives and well-being of kids. The hosts exchange stories of what they learned in sex ed and talk about why comprehensive sex ed (especially teaching consent) is so important. In fact, Jasmine has pushed for a bill in the Georgia legislature that would require consent to be taught during sex ed. (To no one's surprise, the GA Republicans refused to even discuss the issue.)Then we're joined by Christine and Shannon Curley, a mother/daughter duo who host a podcast called Sex Ed Debunked. Shannon and Christine discuss the shortcomings of American sex ed programs and why it's important to include respect, consent, body autonomy, gender identity and sexual orientation - at age appropriate levels. Shannon also chats about what it's like to host a podcast about sex with her mom! If you want to check out Sex Ed Debunked, you can find it on all major podcast platforms. After that, Rachel sits down with Jess McIntosh. Jess is a communications consultant, the co-host of Signal Boost with Zerlina Maxwell, and has been working with Advocates for Youth to stand up for abortion access, LGBTQ rights, and honest sex ed. Jess and Rachel discuss why the radical right has been using sex ed to scare suburban moms, what it means to be non-binary, the weirdest thing about being a commenter on CNN, and so much more. Finally, Amanda, Jasmine and Rachel raise a glass to military veterans and the start of summer in this week's “Toast to Joy.”Our National Troublemaker Training with Senator Mallory McMorrow is coming up on Monday, June 6. After working on two presidential campaigns (for Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton), MSNBC political analyst and SiriusXM host Zerlina Maxwell gained first-hand knowledge of everything liberals have been doing right over the past few elections–and everything they are still doing wrong. Ultimately, these errors worked in President Donald Trump's favor in 2016; he effectively ran a campaign on white identity politics, successfully tapping into white male angst and resistance. In 2020, after the Democratic Party's most historically diverse pool of presidential candidates finally dwindled down to Joe Biden, once again an older white man, Maxwell has posed the ultimate question: what now, liberals? Fueled by Maxwell's trademark wit and candor, The End of White Politics: How to Heal Our Liberal Divide (Hachette, 2020) dismantles the past and present problems of the Left, challenging everyone from scrappy, young “Bernie Bros” to seasoned power players in the “Billionaire Boys' Club.” No topic is taboo; whether tackling the white privilege that enabled Mayor Pete Buttigieg's presidential run, the controversial #HashtagActivism of the Millennial generation, the massive individual donations that sway politicians toward maintaining the status quo of income inequality, or the lingering racism that debilitated some Democratic presidential contenders and cut their promising campaigns short, Maxwell pulls no punches in her fierce critique. However, underlying all of these individual issues, Maxwell argues that it's the “liberal-minded” party's struggle to engage women and communities of color–and its preoccupation with catering to the white, male working class–that threatens to be its most lethal shortfall. The times–and the demographics-are changing, and in order for progressive politics to prevail, we must acknowledge our shortcomings, take ownership of our flaws, and do everything in our power to level the playing field for all Americans. The End of White Politics shows exactly how and why progressives can lean into identity politics, empowering marginalized groups, and uniting under a common vision that will benefit us all. Dr. Christina Gessler's background is in anthropology, women's history, and literature. In seeking the extraordinary in the ordinary, Gessler writes the histories of largely unknown women, poems about small relatable moments, and takes many, many photos in nature.
