Jason Dick and Nathan Gonzales discuss House and Senate races that could be competitive, but aren't quite yet. Basically, what would it take for someone like Brian Fitzpatrick or Raul Ruiz to be in tough races. They also riff on how “Andor” and "Return of the Jedi” fit into this world. Seriously. Today's guest is Aaron Kunin, Professor of English at Pomona College. We will discuss two books Aaron published in 2019: the first is Character as Form (Bloomsbury), a re-examination of the early modern understanding of “character” as stereotype, generalization, and convention. In Character as Form, Aaron braids together close readings of furniture in Christopher Marlowe's Tamburlaine, a reflection on the concept of negative anthropology from Raul Ruiz's Three Lives and Only One Death, and insight into formalism and anti-formalist views of fictive personhood. The second we discuss is Love Three: A Study of a Poem by George Herbert (Wave Books), a “reading diary” that takes a seventeenth-century poem as a springboard for a meditation on love, sexual experience, and power. Herbert's poem is a fraught dialogue between a speaker and Love, which is unfolded to touch on the politics of eating, the allure of rhetorical power, and the nature of crowds. Aaron's research focuses on English Renaissance literature. In addition to his scholarship, he is the author of five books, including Cold Genius: A Book of Poems (2014), The Mandarin (2008), and Folding Ruler Star: Poems (2005), all from Fence Books. John Yargo is Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Boston College. He earned a PhD in English literature from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, specializing in the environmental humanities and early modern culture. In 2023, his dissertation won the J. Leeds Barroll Prize, given by the Shakespeare Association of America. His peer-reviewed articles have been published or are forthcoming in the Journal for Early Modern Culture Studies, Early Theatre, Studies in Philology, and Shakespeare Studies.

Emma hosts Luke Savage, staff writer at Jacobin Magazine, to discuss his new book The Dead Center: Reflections On Liberalism And Democracy After the End Of History. Then, Emma is joined by Rana Abdelhamid, candidate for Congress in New York's 12th Congressional District, to give us an update from the campaign trail. Luke and Emma begin by looking at what the "end of history" means, and how this period, that they were both born into, came to establish a ubiquity of neoliberalism's status quo in the wake of the fall of the Soviet Union and the decline of fascism. They dive particularly into the assimilation of liberals, particularly in the US and UK, into the ideology following the decade of the 80s that saw overwhelming conservative success, looking to Tony Blair and his ability to both channel the zeitgeist of the status quo, and present himself as a transformational figure. This leads them to the Obama era, marking the beginning of the end of the “end of history” in the wake of the financial collapse, and the “ideological universalism” that he employed to fit himself into the center of history and culture, bolstering his transformational status while committing to his conservative politics. They then briefly touch on the role of other political staples of early 2000s culture, such as The Daily Show and the West Wing, and how they created this belief in a commitment to systems, with a cultural rejection of the right, that simply is not a plausible way for politics to function. They wrap up the interview by looking at the role of liberal incompetence, and how the Democratic party in the US manages to consistently act as though they have no power over the system that they control, and the role this played in first bolstering the Bush administration's inadequacy, then pushing Obama's inaction, and finally helping Trump's candidacy along, even pushing forwards his role in 2024. Then, Emma talks with Congressional candidate Rana Abdelhamid on serving NY-12, committing to a progressive agenda that serves her constituents, and how it feels to take on an incumbent that actively looks away from her own district. Emma also dives into Biden's vocal support of workers' collective bargaining, particularly in the Amazon case, Chuck Todd apologizes for broadcasting such nonsense, and Jen Psaki does her best to remind people that it was JUST verbal, he's not going to actually do anything about it. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon and Matt as Emma does all she can to fend Dave from Jamaica away from online sports betting, Candace Owens calls out those mentally unstable adult predators, as she puts her trust in those attempting to legalize child marriage in Tennessee. Rep. Raul Ruiz goes in (though not all the way) on the gas and oil industry's disaster capitalism with the invasion of Ukraine, Steve from Audubon discusses Disney and the right's homophobia, and Sean Hannity subtly calls for the execution of George W Bush. President Trump made history this week as the House voted to impeach him for his role in the Capitol siege. He's now the only president to be impeached twice. House members who voted in favor were undoubtedly influenced by their experiences on Jan. 6 as insurgents breached the Capitol. Rep. Raul Ruiz, who was at the Capitol, recounts walking his colleagues through active shooter drills as fears heightened. The U.S. House pressed swiftly forward Tuesday toward impeachment or other steps to forcibly remove President Donald Trump from office, even as Trump blamed Democratic foes and not himself for last week's deadly attack on the Capitol. He targeted the lawmakers who are pushing for his ouster, saying that it's “a really terrible thing that they're doing.”“To continue on this path, I think it's causing tremendous danger to our country, and it's causing tremendous anger," he said. He accepted no blame for the Capitol attack and said, “I want no violence.”The defeated president, in his first remarks to reporters since last week's violence, showed no remorse for firing up the crowd ahead of the the deadly invasion with comments that now are part of the impeachment charge of inciting insurrection. The president spoke as he left for Texas to survey the border wall with Mexico, taking no questions, after the most serious and deadly domestic incursion at the Capitol in the nation's history.Impeachment ahead, the House on Tuesday will first try to convince the vice president and Cabinet to act even more quickly to remove Trump from office, warning he is a threat to democracy in the remaining days of his presidency.House lawmakers are reconvening at the Capitol for the first time since the deadly pro-Trump riot to approve a resolution calling on Vice President Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment to declare the president unable to serve. Pence is not expected to take any such action. The House would next move swiftly to impeach Trump.“We have to be very tough and very strong right now in defending the Constitution and democracy,” said Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., an author of both pieces of legislation, in an interview.Trump faces a single charge — “incitement of insurrection” — in the impeachment resolution that the House will begin debating Wednesday, a week before Democrat Joe Biden is set to be inaugurated, Jan. 20.The unprecedented events, which could make Trump the first U.S. president to be twice impeached, are unfolding in a nation bracing for more unrest. The FBI has warned ominously of potential armed protests in Washington and many states by Trump loyalists ahead of Biden's inauguration. In a dark foreshadowing, the Washington Monument was closed to the public and the inauguration ceremony on the west steps of the Capitol will be off limits to the public. It all added up to stunning final moments for Trump's presidency as Democrats and a growing number of Republicans declare he is unfit for office and could do more damage after inciting a mob that violently ransacked the U.S. Capitol last Wednesday.A Capitol police officer died from injuries suffered in the riot, and police shot a woman during the violence. Three others died in what authorities said were medical emergencies.Late Monday, the entire Congressional Hispanic Caucus, all 34 members, unanimously agreed to support impeachment, calling for Trump's immediate removal.“It is clear that every moment Trump remains in office, America is at risk,” said a statement from the caucus, led by Rep. Raul Ruiz, D-Ca. It said Trump "must be held accountable” for his actions.Democrats aren't the only ones who say Trump needs to go.Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., spoke to House GOP colleagues late Monday of the significance of the vote, and encouraged them to consider it a “vote of conscience,” according to a person granted anonymity to discuss the private call. She has spoken critically of Trump's actions but has not said publicly how she will vote.Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania joined GOP Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska over the weekend in calling for Trump to “go away as soon as possible.”Pence and Trump met late Monday for the first time since the Capitol attack, and had a “good conversation” pledging to continue working for the remainder of their terms, said a senior administration official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private meeting....

Nora Roughen-Schmidt and Luke Zahm chat with Becca Cooke owner of Red's Mercantile. Becca was born and raised in Eau Claire - she grew up on a dairy and beef farm right outside of town. While studying marketing and public relations at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, MN, Becca worked at a housing and workforce development nonprofit and waitressed. After college, she went on to work for Haberman Media and Marketing in new business development pitching new clients, etc. Started working in politics to be closer to her passions and make a change on a macro level vs. micro level. She held posts on congressional races in Minnesota, Michigan, and Colorado and then moved to California as finance director for Congressman Raul Ruiz raising $3.4 million in his successful re-election. In 2015, after Ruiz won Becca moved back home to be closer to family and slower pace of life. Once back in Eau Claire, she started a fundraising consulting firm advising US Senate, Congressional and State races across the country. Eau Claire was seeing a huge revitalization at that time and Becca wanted to be a part of that energy. She quit taking new clients in the Fall of 2017 to start Red's Mercantile with a desire to support independent brands. They have stayed true to their mission of carrying only made in America goods, but the shop itself has become this gathering space for women and a hotbed for activism - much more than a place that sells "stuff".
Kimberlin Pelzer Brown has spent the past three decades building a multi-facetted career in business, philanthropy, entertainment and agriculture. While she is best known for her prominent role in CBS’s award winning international soap operas, she is a proud wife and mother, successful entrepreneur, philanthropist, two-time bone marrow donor, and a passionate advocate for women in politics. Married for 27 years, Kimberlin and her husband Gary have built several successful businesses including a sports fishing and marina rental company, as well as an avocado farm. She also owns and personally operates her own successful design company, K. Brown Design. Like many small business owners, Kimberlin built her companies from the ground up and now employs over 100 Californians. As one of a small, rare group of actors in Hollywood who are public about their conservative political beliefs, Kimberlin entered the national political spotlight as a prime time featured speaker at the Republican National Convention in 2016. She strongly believes that the district has not been effectively represented by incumbent Raul Ruiz and his leaders Barbara Boxer, Nancy Pelosi and Barack Obama. The National Republican Congressional Committee has awarded her “Young Gun” status for her achievements as a candidate. Former White House Chief of Staff and Governor John Sununu, Congressman Ed Royce, the East Valley Republican Women’s Federated and the Riverside County Republican Party have endorsed Kimberlin over her opponents because her diverse track record of successes will enable her to be an aggressive candidate who will be a principled and effective, results driven leader in Congress.

Awkward Celebrity Encounters: Raul Ruiz by Caveh Zahedi
As multifaceted as it was multinucleated, the Chicana/o Movement of the late-1960s and 1970s was “the largest and most widespread civil rights and empowerment struggle by Mexican Americans in U.S. history.” Since the early 2000s, scholarship on El Movimiento has blossomed, initiating a process of excavation that has revealed the multiple sites, issues, participants, and strategies engaged in this broad struggle for self determination and social justice. In The Chicano Generation: Testimonios of the Movement (University of California Press, 2015), Mario T. Garcia, Professor of Chicano Studies at the University of California, Santa Barbara, assists in this process by centering on Los Angeles, “the political capital of the movement,” and the lives of three of the city's most prominent activists, Raul Ruiz, Gloria Arellanes, and Rosalio Munoz. To tell their stories, Dr. Garcia employs the testimonio, a narrative form that works as a sort of collaborative oral history or “collaborative autobiography” that provides a “testimony of the life, struggles, and experiences of activists who might not have written their own stories.” The result is a deeply personal and informative account of the movement, told in the first person, through the eyes of those who lived it.
