Over the Top is an 80s treasure. Set amidst the backdrop of long-haul trucking and arm wrestling, it's a patently absurd film about a father reuniting with his son. More important, though, it's oozing with machismo and righteous tunes. It's honestly all the best things about the decade rolled into one undersized, sweat-infused, cut-off shirt. And it must be seen. Produced by the legendary B-movie assembly line Cannon Films, Over the Top embodies much of their spirit. For one, it thinks it's a much better film than it actually is. It also paid an absurd amount of money to Sylvester Stallone (anywhere from $12 to $15 million of its $25 million dollar budget) under the assumption that his onscreen presence would make the movie a hit. Spoiler: It was not. And, much like  Masters of the Universe—another of their big bets—Cannon's wasteful spending on star power blew up in their face. It recouped only half its budget, and the reviews were equally brutal. Its skewering even earned two Razzie wins for Stallone's onscreen son David Mendenhall (who played Michael Cutler). Equal parts cruel and tragic. Shame on you, Razzies. He was just a boy. Yet, I implore you to ignore the bad. From the overabundance of testosterone to Lincoln Hawk's (Stallone) poignant, arm wrestling-centric life lessons, this is a true cult classic. So sit back, take a Lost Highway Double Black IPA from Mother Road Brewing Co. over the top, and turn those hats around! I, the Thunderous Wizard (@WriterTLK), Capt. 'Zum Glück gezwungen 1' - 'Over the Top' vs. 'Bibi & Tina - Mädchen gegen Jungs'! Join us as we enjoy our last "sports" movie in our Over the Top (1987) VHS movie review. Over the Top Quick FactsOver the Top was released on February 13, 1987, on a budget of $25 million and made $16 million in the box office. Sylvester Stallone was reportedly paid $12 million to star in Over the Top. Directed by Menahem GolanProduced by Menahem Golan and Yoram GlobusScreenplay by Stirling Silliphant and Sylvester StalloneStory by Gary Conway and David Engelbach CastSylvester Stallone as Lincoln HawkRobert Loggia as Jason CutlerSusan Blakely as Christina HawkRick Zumwalt as Bob "Bull" HurleyDavid Mendenhall as Michael HawkChris McCarty as Tim SalangerTerry Funk as RukerBruce Way as John GrizzlyJimmy Keegan as RichieGreg Schwartz as SmasherAllan Graf as CollinsJohn Braden as Col. DavisReggie Bennett as Female Arm Wrestler Multi-time world arm wrestling champion and future professional wrestler Scott Norton also makes an appearance along with other professional arm wrestlers such as Allen Fisher, John Vreeland, Cleve Dean and Andrew "Cobra" Rhodes (as the final match referee).[3] Professional arm wrestler John Brzenk also makes an appearance. VHS DescriptionStallone goes Over the Top to be champ. His four Rocky sagas had all America applauding at ringside. Now Sylvester Stallone gives us another reason to stand up and cheer, starring as down-on-his-luck big-rig trucker Lincoln hawk and taking us under the glaring Las Vegas lights for all the boisterous action of the World Armwrestling Championship in Over the Top. Like Stallone's "Italian Stallion" in 1976's Academy Award-winning Bes Picture Rocky, Lincoln Hawk is an amiable underdog, a David in a world Goliaths. Relying on his wits and willpower, he struggles to rebuild his life, going against the odds as he goes after the World Armwrestling Championship's first-place prize money...and the love of the son (Davis Mendenhall) he abandoned years earlier. Get ready for excitement as Stallone lands another knockout action-film punch. And get ready for good times as you meet a colorful, iron-armed gallery of arm wrestling giants like Rick Zumwalt, the real-life California champion who squares off with Stallone in a to-the-limit finale. Zumwalt explains his fascination with the tension-packed sport this way: "I can shake a guy's hand and then try to rip his arm off. After the match is over, we can laugh about it." "you've got guys from M.I.T. and guys who can't spell M.IT.," says Stallone about arm wrestling's broad appeal. That appeal — and more — is vividly captured here. After Over the Top is over, don't be surprised if you want to watch it again! Trailers: None Soundtrack1. "Winner Takes It All" – Sammy Hagar2.   Happy belated Father’s Day to all of you out there in Legion land.  We have prepared a feast of muscle and metal with an all star cast.  We are joined by Brian M. Sammons of The ABCs Of Hidden Horror and my former broadcasting partner on The Bird and The Beard, Hawke Wood.  We discuss two films featuring two beefy dads and their unruly kids in this double bill.  First up, when trucking and montages come first and his son comes second, it’s up to Lincoln Hawk to reconnect with his son and somehow sway Robert Loggia with the power of Kenny Loggins and arm wrestling. All this and motor oil drinking madmen in Over The Top. Then, when man is down and machines are king in the world of boxing, it’s up to Charlie Kenton to hustle his son, some gnarly promoters and bring an obsolete robot to the top of the ranks.  All this and bull punching in Real Steel.

In 1987, Sylvester Stallone could do whatever he wanted, so uhhhh...he made an arm wrestling/truck driving movie. Why not?? Toll and Alex loved it as kids, but does it hold up? Is there really an underground trucker arm wrestling circuit? Is the main character's name Lincoln Hawk or Lincoln Hawks? Is Robert Loggia really the villain here? How does one go about installing a weight lifting machine inside of a semi truck? So many questions! This podcast wont meet you halfway...you have to take it over the top!!!

There was however no avoiding Over the Top when discussing the junkiest flicks of 1987. Plus, returning guest (and Alamo Drafthouse programmer) Greg MacLennan threatened to fight the hosts if they didn't bring him on to cover it.Will Cargill fail to meet Brian and Greg halfway? The world meets nobody halfway, least of all Lincoln Hawk. He's a hard-working truck driver who's driven to bond with his estranged son and does so through truck driving and arm wrestling. It's a rocky start, but we won't leave you with a cliffhanger. He must go all the way to the arm wrestling championship in Vegas to keep his son. It's over the top. And that's the title of the movie too.

Oh boy. Momma always said, “Drunk is as drunk does.” Greg does drunk exceptionally well. Last week, we regaled you with “Drunk Canasta,” the first part of our Cook Forest decompression. This week, “Drunker Canasta.” The cast iron pizza was amazing, in the Mt. Rushmore of best pizza ever consumed by either Del Duca. Greg can’t find his Lincoln Hawk shirt. Problem is, the world meets nobody halfway. Outside of Stallone, perhaps only Kenny Loggins truly understands this. It’s like a testosterone enhanced Hallmark card. Watch it. Jesus, that guitar solo gets me every time. (Norris understands. Don’t you, Earnest?) Jen becomes annoyed with Greg’s infatuation with and use of Snape’s wand. Greg fucks up the lyrics to, “Total Eclipse of the Heart.” (Kind of like this. Really, you should click that. It’s funny.) Jen gives Greg a Steelhead education and two young Asian girls show off their catch. Greg dives on Jen and Kate, now peacefully slumbering, thus concluding this shit show. Jen finishes strong with, “I’m done with you, fucker fuck face.” Very alliterative. Well played, Jennifer. Well played. We present to you, “Drunker Canasta.”

Joined again by guest Nicky Tyranno, we dive into the cross country adventures of trucker/amateur arm wrestler Lincoln Hawk. After abandoning his son for never explained reasons, Hawk tries to force some bonding time with his now 12 year old boy, but li’l Mikey would rather kill himself in traffic than hang with his dear old dad. That is until Hawk sleeps with him (no incesto), they do a father/son workout together and Hawk forces Mikey into an arm wrestling match with a local punk, then they’re somehow right as rain. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bmoviebreakdown/support
