He got his start on early era YouTube posting comedic skits. This year, John returns to pop with his single “Danger” and “Nothin 4 Something” a moody mid-tempo 80's throwback. We're getting candid about how he found his voice as a singer after a career in voice acting, the significant of finding community online through Youtube and the evolving social media landscape, and the impact being an artist has on one's mental health. Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi is back this week to kick off our coverage of She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. In this episode, we discuss episode 1 and 2 of the series. First Candi and I share our level of engagement with the source material. Candi enlisted some help from some fellow Blerds and I am coming into the series with no prior knowledge of Jennifer Walters. The first part of our discussion focuses on the pilot - our thoughts on the opening scene, Jennifer's origin story, the casting of Tatiana Mislay in the role, and what worked for us in the introductory episode. We then discuss episode 2 - Superhuman Law - and Jennifer's ongoing tension between returning to her normal life and the call to duty that often comes with superhuman abilities. We close things out by discussing our wishlist for the rest of the season, whether or not we were distracted by the show's CGI, and then we have a riveting discussion about whether the Hulk can smash in our thirst segment. As mentioned during the thirst segment, check out this article about the Hulk's sexcapades. Happy Wine Wednesday! Candi returns this week to discuss The Bob's Burgers's Movie. Bob's Burgers is our favorite comfort show, so we were delighted when it was announced that the Belchers were coming to the big screen. You know I love discussing which characters we relate to from a show and there was no way I would pass on an opportunity to discuss which Belchers we see in ourselves. We then touch on how the writers manage to acknowledge real life issues, such as the Belchers' financial struggles, while still creating a property that is both comforting and humorous. Next, we get into whether there were any noticeable differences between the Belchers on film versus television. It wouldn't be Bob's Burgers if there were no musical numbers, so of course we share our favorite selections from the film. Following that, we share our thoughts on the various arcs for each Belcher family member. The secondary characters have become just as memorable as the Belchers, so we talk about which characters outside of the Belcher family we like most. It would be a little weird to share thirsty thoughts about animated characters, so this week's thirst segment has a little twist to it.As always, we love you for listening. In this episode I speak with my talented friend John Roberts, John is an actor, voice actor, comedian, writer, and singer who voices Linda Belcher on the animated sitcom Bob's Burgers. We speak about the challenges he faced in the industry and the places he found comfort and support to keep believing in himself. We discuss sexuality, artistry and the importance of staying true to yourself and your art. John's words of wisdom inspire me and remind me of the importance of self love and determination. I hope they do the same for you.
We have a soft spot for nuanced, animated moms, and so joining the Best Supporting ranks of Marge Simpson and Linda Belcher this week is "King of the Hill" queen, Peggy Hill. We're zooming in on the Season 11 episode "Peggy Horror Picture Show," in which Peggy unknowingly befriends a drag queen. We discuss Mike Judge, Brittany Murphy and Pamela Adlon, the bonkers Bill, surprisingly emotional animation, other parallels to The Simpsons and Bob's Burgers, and of course the fact that Peggy is voiced by Kathy Najimy. And have we mentioned this episode premiered in 2007 on Fox during primetime? That may come up a few times. Interview with multi-talented actor, writer, and musician JOHN ROBERTS Hailing from Edison, NJ, John Roberts's deep-rooted love for music can be traced back to his youth. At the onset of the 90's he fell in love with the New York City rave scene and frequented the storied warehouse parties mythologized in movies like “Go.” He visited Other Music in the city's fashion-forward Village neighborhood on a weekly basis to buy new releases from Orbital, Moby, and more. Blondie tapped him to drop some lyrical fire on “Love Level” from their critically acclaimed 2017 chart-topper Pollinator. "Looking," a wild anthem produced by Big Black Delta, followed in 2019, marked his solo debut with remixes by Tensnake, Junior Sanchez, and Gerd Janson. The song—which landed at #19 on UK club charts--along with “Dirty Little Secrets” and “Lonely Boys Have Fun Too” appeared on his self-titled EP released last summer. Flashforward to 2020, Roberts entered the studio with longtime club friend Junior Sanchez for its follow-up. “Freaks” due out this fall is one of the many songs the two collaborated on which will be released in 2021. John is a cast member of the EMMY Award-winning “Bob's Burgers” as lovable & loud matriarch Linda Belcher which landed him the first EMMY nod in the category of “Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance” (2015). We had the pleasure of interviewing John Roberts over Zoom video! EMMY nominated TV star, LGBTQ icon, comedian and nu-disco electronic artist John Roberts, best known as the voice of the lovable Linda Belcher on the hit TV show Bob's Burgers, released his debut album, Lights Out (via X-Bop). Produced by Junior Sanchez, it features guest appearances from Debbie Harry, Beth Ditto and babydaddy (Scissor Sisters). John previously released two singles off Lights Out with accompanying music videos. Featuring Debbie Harry of Blondie, "Lights Out", also has a trippy animated video directed and animated by Kris Baldwin (Birds of Prey, Cartoon Networks DC Super Hero Girls) and secondly, the lead single "Freaks" with a video directed and choreographed by Nina McNeely (Rihanna, Bjork, Banks). John also released a "Freaks" (Remixes) album with tracks featuring Harry Romero, Tommie Sunshine & On Deck and Ant LaRock. The Harry Romero reached #1 on the Tech House Charts. The group released one album and toured relentlessly. Bringing things full circle, former tour-mates Blondie tapped him to drop some lyrical fire on “Love Level” from their critically acclaimed 2017 chart-topper Pollinator. If voicing a character on a hit animated sitcom is your idea of a dream job, let this deep dive into both voiceover and comedy be your guide. Eugene Mirman and John Roberts, both voice actors on Fox’s Emmy Award winner “Bob’s Burgers,” join us to map out how they broke into the biz and offer advice for those looking to do the same. Their paths were different but their advice is the same: create and test out the material that best showcases your talent. Loren Bouchard’s animated family comedy “Bob’s Burgers” has run for 10 delightful seasons, featuring Eugene as son Gene Belcher and John as matriarch Linda Belcher. Eugene is also known for his work on “Aqua Teen Hunger Force,” “Flight of the Conchords,” and “Delocated,” and for the alternative standup comedy he has helped turn into a movement. John, a musician as well as theater and commercial actor, made a name for himself writing and performing in popular web sketches. Next, we move on to our topic of the week - the LEGENDARY Linda Belcher. Kristine is a newbie to Bob's Burgers, so we started with our overall reactions to the show. We are happy to report that she loved it! Using our watchlist as a guide, we talk about Linda as a mom, a wife, and a character generally. Indeed, Linda is a longtime member of #TeamTooMuch, but she's so endearing. How can you not like a character who loves her wine and follows the life of a raccoon she named Little King Trashmouth? Although it's an episode all about Linda, we work in a little bonus discussion of the other Belchers we love and share our favorite songs from the watchlist. Book to movie adaptations are pretty common, but what about video game to movies? There have been quite a few that have released over the past thirty years or so. This week, Lindsay and Teegan take a look at which ones sort of work and which ones don’t at all, from the unique, spooky atmosphere of Silent Hill to the almost but not quite there attempts to wrangle something of substance from Resident Evil to the obvious laziness of BloodRayne that makes it feel like it came straight out of the 90’s (even though it was released in 2005). Our hosts also discuss storytelling in fighting games from the 90’s vs. today, how their movie counterparts don’t quite measure up, and the potential storytelling ventures that video games have if they’re paid proper attention and given an appropriate budget and resources … just like comic book movies today. Also in this episode, Lindsay talks about her cosplaying plans for C2E2 as an aged up Linda Belcher, and Teegan pays tribute to Kazuhisa Hashimoto, the creator of the Konami Code.

From Friday Night Lights’ Tami Taylor to Vivian Banks of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air to Linda Belcher of Bob’s Burgers, our favorite TV shows depict mothers of all kinds. I’ve noticed something, though. While TV provides us with real, flawed mom characters to relate to, we still somehow often hold ourselves up to June Cleaver, the quintessential perfect mother. When she isn’t serving up a wholesome dinner, Mrs. Cleaver ices a cake for dessert, arranges lovely floral bouquets and, of course, keeps the family’s suburban Mayfield home exceptionally tidy. If you’re more of a perpetually 15 minutes late, takeout-ordering kind of mom, that’s cool too. Regardless of whether you’re crushing it or simply just taking motherhood one day at a time, you’re doing it, Mama, and that’s definitely something to be proud of. This week we talk with Linda Belcher, fresh off her landslide win for state House in the Bullitt County special election, and Rebekah Witherington, the chair of the Bullitt County Democratic Party. We talk about how they won so convincingly, about the future of the Dems in Bullitt and across the state, and about the issues that resonate with the people in their county. We also talk about the opioid crisis, and about the surprising amount of unity around medical marijuana.
Swan noise On today’s podcast, guest Becca Greenberg(@meetyourmoms) and Ross (@misterweisman) dish about suburban Philadelphia landmarks, what animal they would be cursed with turning into, and how quickly they guessed what the moral of the movie would be. Be sure to check out Becca’s podcast, Meet Your Moms! I’m on her latest episode where we dive deep into the life and times of Linda Belcher. Alriiiiiight! The Throwdown Thursday gang gets into the groove with a new season of the podcast! They talk about Linda Belcher, the matriarch of the Belcher family of Fox's animated show, Bob's Burgers! Voiced by the talented John Roberts, the ladies sing Linda's fun songs throughout the show. There are some science, some wine, some files, and some crazy mom stories!
John Roberts is a musician and comedian, who got his start when his hilarious Youtube videos inspired by his own mother went viral. He perfectly captured the spirit of his Italian, suburban, Catholic, New Jersey mom. His career as a comedian took off and he has toured doing comedy with Margaret Cho and gained national fame as the voice of Linda Belcher on Fox's hit animated series Bob's Burgers. Roberts, who is also a musician, also performs with Blondie, Gregory Brothers and as a solo act. At the end of our delightful interview, Roberts was joined by Alex Borstein, an Employee of the Month Alum who plays Lois on Family Guy to gives real quotes by President Donald Trump the gravitas they deserve. Our episode was recorded live at Joe's Pub at The Public Theater. www.employeeofthemonthshow.com or @catielazarus and @johnrobertsfun This episode was produced by Rob Schulte http://robkschulte.com
It's a rainy night in NYC, only a few weeks after the election and our mood has taken a turn for the "what the hell happened?" Christian does in fact return to the show after a two month absence. He brings us stories regarding cologne and Shonali shares her important scientific findings as to why the election turned out the way it did. Christian and Shonali been longtime fans of both of our Ep. 49 guests! Our first guest is comedian, John Roberts Jr. who is gay (don't worry - he's out) and an Emmy nominated voice actor for the character Linda Belcher on the show "Bob's Burgers." But before that, did you see him on YouTube in one of our all time favorite videos The Christmas Tree. We are so happy John is back from the West Coast where he smoked too much pot and now resides only an hour away from NYC with his two cute dogs, Yoko and Iggy. He's also back to cooking at home with his mom. Love ya for it John! As we head towards our 50th episode in February and our upcoming WDEK All Day Fest on February 18th, we are looking towards sharing more with you about a youth homeless shelter called The Covenant House. Listen to Alan Weinroth explain in more detail what this organization does for kids in need. Shonali sings the Neil Young song, "Don't Let It Bring You Down" and she screws up the lyrics a little. Audience member Anthony Cangelosi joins us on stage for #GetItOffYourChest. We are currently searching for therapy for him. Our final guest is musician Eleanor Friedberger (solo performer, member of Fiery Furnaces, & Shonali's fashion icon.) Her hair is the best! She has been on tour for the past year in support of her latest album "New View" - including playing in Tel Aviv on our election day and Rome the day after. Shonali insists it takes a lot of work to be the leader of a touring band. Fortunately Eleanor now has her own room when she tours. We are excited to hear Eleanor play "Your Word" and "Sweetest Girl" for us. Til we meet again - next show is January 3rd, 2017 at HiFiNYC.
Welcome to The Geekiverse's first comedy sketch show, Jimpressions! Listen as host Jamie LeRoy and Trevor White interview Linda Beltcher (Josiah LeRoy) & The Target Lady (Jamie LeRoy).
How many times have you watched a show and thought: "Where are these kids' parents?!" If you're anything like us, the answer is "Too many." It seems like pop culture has very few parents left that actually sit down with their kids and, ya know, parent. So, we take some time to call out these terrible tropes and point towards the TV parents that we can all admire. (Although we completely forgot to mention Bob and Linda Belcher, which is maybe the greatest oversight of all!) We also squeeze in a discussion of Suicide Squad and why we not-so-secretly love to see it fail. And, as always, we finish with recommendations for each other. Follow us on Twitter @BWGPodcast
