She has crafted a sound-world of her own that marries her love of history, jazz vocalists, Black folk traditions and hip-hop producers. As a teenager, Black attended Detroit School of Arts High School where she studied classical and jazz music as a Vocal major. In 2014, Black placed runner-up in the Detroit Jazz Festival's Youth Jazz Vocal Competition. She later enrolled in Spelman College's music program, focusing on classical vocal performance and modern composition, becoming the first student of the program to perform a senior recital of original non-classical compositions. In 2023, Black was selected to perform at NPR's Tiny Desk on the Road Tour stop in Atlanta and has also performed as an opening act for MAJOR., Anthony Hamilton, Chrisette Michele, Elle Varner, and Maze featuring Frankie Beverly.Black's latest work, "Walk in the Rain," is the second of a trilogy that centers the story of Blues singer Gladys Bentley as told in the 1952 article "I Am a Woman Again". Displaying Black's passion for archival research and amplifying the voices of Black music elders, this project bridges the gaps of Bentley's small archive to create a more complete, imaginative story of her life. This explores Bentley's life-long desire to belong and be loved, the elements of life that brought her joy and the fluid nature of her gender expression and sexuality.Listen and subscribe to the BAAS Entertainment Podcast on Spotify, Amazon Music, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, Deezer, iHeartRadio, Pandora, Podchaser, Pocket Casts and TuneIn. “Hey, Alexa. His research and teaching interests include African American theatre and performance, gender and sexuality studies, and musical theatre history. How do you start a renaissance? The one woman who knows - Beyoncé - was unavailable to answer my questions. So instead, we've gone back to 1920s Harlem this week, to figure out the good gay truth. It turns out the Harlem Renaissance was a lot more queer than we learned in school. And half of its greatest luminaries, who represented a major step forward in Black queer history, have been largely forgotten today. Three of them are the focus of this week's episode: Alain LeRoy Locke, Gladys Bentley, and Claude McKay. They are just a fraction of the queer Black people who started, fueled, and memorialized the cultural flowering we now call the Harlem Renaissance. Join me and my guest as we delve into their lives and figure out what each has to teach us about this fascinating period. When you're done here, grab a copy of my guest's new book on the subject, which is beautifully illustrated and just came out: Flamboyants (2024). Born and raised in Detroit, Vahn  grew up in a melting pot of music and this aided her in cultivating her soul-charged, jazz infused sound, marrying her reverence for vocalists like Sarah Vaughn with her love of producers like J Dilla. We talked about her musical education, her career path,  her research into Black history and culture, her joy of collecting vinyl and some of her other creative outlets. It was interesting to hear about her contrasting experiences with work, life and music in Detroit, New York and Atlanta.  As a composer Black has lent her artistry to various art mediums from short films to interactive performance art. One of the biggest stars in Prohibition Age New York was blues singer Gladys Bentley, who caused a stir in Harlem, wearing a top hat and tails, flirting with women in the audience, and singing raunchy lyrics. Despite Bentley's phenomenal talent, the repeal of Prohibition and the end of the jazz age led to waning interest in the type of bawdy performance for which she was known. Despite attempts to change with the times, Bentley was never again able to reach the level of fame she had once enjoyed. Joining me in this episode to discuss Gladys Bentley and queer Black women performers in Prohibition Age New York is Dr. Cookie Woolner, Associate Professor of History at the University of Memphis and author of The Famous Lady Lovers: Black Women and Queer Desire before Stonewall. For my second Queer Pride episode this month, I offer you a panoply of blues and other popular music sung by women of color over the past 100 years and over a wide range of the LGBTQ spectrum. The focus is on the queer and bisexual women of color who enlivened the Harlem blues scene in the 1920s, including the newly popular and celebrated Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, as well as other vital and iconoclastic singers of that era, including Bricktop, Lucille Bogan, Alberta Hunter, Ethel Waters, Victoria Spivey, Lucille Hegamin, and the fascinating Gladys Bentley. The net is further extended to include jazz (Billie Holiday, Carmen McRae, Dinah Washington), pop, rock ‘n' roll (Big Mama Thornton), gospel (Sister Rosetta Tharpe), cabaret (Mabel Mercer, Joséphine Baker), soul (Carolyn Franklin) and folk (Joan Armatrading, Meshell Ndegeocello, Toshi Reagon, and Laura Love). Of course in this episode the musical categories are as flexible as are the sexual and gender boundaries, so expect to see a lot of genre-hopping as well among these subversive, innovative, and pathbreaking women of color. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” Occasional guests from the “business” (singers, conductors, composers, coaches, and teachers) lend their distinctive insights. At Countermelody's core is the interaction between singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. The original. Before Nikki, before Cardi, before Kim. Long before Young M.A. was seducing women out of their Fashion Nova, and Meg made that congressman clutch his pearls over WAP, there was Gladys Bentley. An open lesbian, a cross-dressing performer whose raunchy act and lewd lyrics were both the talk of the town and the hottest ticket around. A darling of the Harlem Renaissance, Gladys Bentley was once the richest Black woman in America. A blues singer who got her start singing at rent parties, she was a woman brave enough to love and live as she wanted - until the politics of the time and a brutal system of oppression, that has denied so many of us the opportunity to live in our truth, forced her back into the margins. Our stories are complex. Difficult. Not always redeemable to those who live in the black and white. Not always deemed worthy to be told if not pristine or above reproach. But not in this space. Here, amongst a tribe of women who come bearing our own scars, we make space for every story. And today we tell the story of Gladys, because it is spectacular and because it serves as inspiration for those who will come after her to plant their own flags in planets yet discovered. Can’t wait to walk with you today. Tune in live. This one will be worth it. Join GirlTrek’s Black History Bootcamp - 21 Cosmonauts at blackhistorybootcamp.com to receive specially curated emails with survival tips, speeches + dedicated songs to listen to for each episode. This week, Kelley & Emily cover some radical, firecrackers who lived life to the extreme! They pair these feisty ladies with some Kung Fu Girl Riesling which is unexpectedly dry. Emily starts off with the story of Gladys Bentley an open lesbian and Harlem Renaissance entertainer who rocked a suit like no one else could! Her sexy songs were a controversial hit which transcended race and sexuality. Then, Kelley tells the almost-too-crazy-to-be-real story of Julie d'Aubigny who fought and sung her way through life, taking on a series of male and female lovers! She also knew that burning down a convent made a bigger impression on a lady than flowers. Grab your pants permit and your matches because it's time to wine about herstory! ** Mornings with u by Barradeen | https://soundcloud.com/barradeenMusic promoted by https://www.free-stock-music.comCreative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unportedhttps://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/deed.en_US Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/winingaboutherstory/overview)

Gladys Bentley loved women, wore men's clothing, and sang bawdy songs that would make sailors blush...and did it openly in the 1920s and 1930s. This was long before the gay rights or the civil rights movements, yet Bentley became a darling of the Harlem Renaissance alongside icons like Langston Hughes and Josephine Baker. While her provocative performances kept her from becoming as well-known as her peers, they are exactly why she is being rediscovered—and admired—today. In celebration of Women's History Month, we follow the life of a trailblazer who was unapologetically herself at a time when she would’ve been acutely aware of the risks.
