ANGELA PETRILLI Interview - LA Blues Guitarist

Jim and Mike TALK

ANGELA PETRILLI Interview (with Matt & Rob) Angela is an LA based guitarist who fronts her great band, "The Players" They most recently released a live version of Led Zeppelin's "No Quarter" which will most certainly blow you away! We talked to Angela about the Netflix documentary "Norman's Rare Guitars".  Angela is part of the documentary and she's a big part of Norman's Guitars with her "guitar of the week" videos and also instructional videos teaching guitar players some of the songs she absolutely loves. A new album is in the works from Angela Petrilli and the Players! In this interview we talk about Norman's, Zeparella, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Incubus, Martin Guitar and of course.. Guitars! ***** A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ANGELA PETRILLI Back in 2019 Angela lost her dear friend and bandmate Jennifer Pagliaro from stage 4 breast cancer. Angela was one half of the duo "Roses and Cigarettes" (with Jenny).  That year they created some major buzz with their 3rd album "Echoes and Silence" and a tour in the works.  On March 25th Rolling Stone named their song "Fast as I Can" as one of the 10 best country songs of the week. But in a heartbreaking and tragic turn of events, Pagliaro—who had been fighting off cancer for years—passed away the very next day. She was just 35. For the better part of a year, the grieving Petrilli put down her guitar, left L.A. behind and set out across the world. She traveled to Nashville, New York, Paris and Italy, eventually making it as far as Australia. Along the way, she spent a lot of time on the ocean, where she was able to find some peace and clarity. As she began to heal, she could feel her muse calling once again. Finally back home in L.A., she reached out to some musician friends and booked a bar gig under the name The Petrilli Players. The idea was to shake off the cobwebs, play some covers and have a good time—and that's exactly how it went down. With a reinvigorated sense of purpose, and a band of simpatico players—Brett Grossman on bass, Stephen Haaker on drums, Matt Lomeo on harmonica & backing vocals, Bobby Victor on keys, and Vic Vanacore III on percussion—Petrilli was inspired to start writing again. After several months playing shows around Los Angeles (including opening spots for Billy Bob Thornton & the Boxmasters, The Immediate Family, and a performance at Joe Bonamassa's 3rd Annual Stream-a-thon concert), the new songs felt studio-ready, and Petrilli booked a session at Hollywood's legendary Sunset Sound—the same hallowed ground that has hosted sessions by The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Janis Joplin, Van Halen, Ray LaMontagne and countless others. ************ You can find Angela on FB and Instagram.  Be sure to visit her website : angelapetrillimusic.com for all upcoming shows and new releases. ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found almost anywhere you listen to podcasts including Podbean (host site), Spotify , Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and YOUTUBE Links to more sources at Link Tree - www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic  Help support our Podcast by purchasing some cool merch: https://www.teepublic.com/user/knowgoodmusic Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video segments from all of our interviews.  Just search "know good music".   All AUDIO versions are also available on YOUTUBE! Oscar-Winner and frontman for the Boxmasters Billy Bob Thornton and his longtime bandmate, Grammy-winning guitarist JD Andrew, sit with Says Who Sports to talk music, movies and a whole lotta sports!Thornton has been a big fan of sports, especially baseball, all his life. He grew up in rural Arkansas and became a fan of the St. Louis Cardinals. Thornton shares his excitement at meeting Stan Musial and Bob Gibson, what it was like to witness the power of slugger Albert Pujols taking cuts in batting practice from an on-field perspective, drinking beers with Goose Gossage, a smoking session with Jim Leyland, his close relationship with former Cardinals manager Tony LaRussa, and his pick between Greg Maddux and Roger Clemens to pitch a winner-take-all game. Thornton, who starred in the movie Friday Night Lights, discusses immersing himself in the intensity and drama of Texas high school football, his iconic halftime speech in the movie, and his big respect for kickers, reinforced thru his own (painful) attempts at kicking seemingly simple extra points during breaks in filming in the Astrodome. Thornton, who has played and toured with the best in the music business since he was a teenager, and Andrew discuss their musical brotherhood of nearly two decades, their earliest musical influences, and stories of recording and sharing stages with many of their musical heroes, from ZZ Top to Warren Zevon. Andrew recounts what it was like working as a mixer in the studio with the Rolling Stones during the sessions for A Bigger Bang, including special moments with Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. Thornton discusses how winning an Oscar for Sling Blade changed his life, his gratitude for the cast members of the movie and the friendships that developed, and if Sling Blade could even be made today.

Andrew and Academy Award-winning actor Billy Bob Thornton — join host Ken Womack for a spirited discussion of songwriting, recording, and what Thornton says is "the most difficult thing about being a Beatles fan." Formed in 2007, the Boxmasters have recorded a diverse catalog of music that touches on their shared love of the rock and roll of the 1960s. Listening to The Boxmasters, one can hear obvious odes to the Beatles, Byrds and Beach Boys, but also The Mothers of Invention, Kris Kristofferson, John Prine and Big Star. Since the formation of The Boxmasters, several long-time friends have contributed to the sound of the band, but the core of The Boxmasters has always been Andrew and Thornton. As primary songwriters, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration, new sounds and new means of expression. As a touring band, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top, Steve Miller, George Thorogood and Kid Rock, their touring highlights include appearances at Levon Helm's “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock, New York, a performance at “Ramble at The Ryman” in 2008, and “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015. Their 14th and latest album is entitled '69, with an ensuing tour that includes a stop at Monmouth University's Pollak Theatre in June 2023. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

There are four types of discourse in language- descriptive, narrative, expository and argumentative. And it seems that all four of those are readily present in any niche interest group on the internet these days. Anything from the way a machine works (descriptive), the exact timeline of Tolkien's world building (narrative), someone breaking down the latest universe development in a comic-book based film (expository), and argumentative which that one goes without example. If you need one, go to twitter. On the note of argumentative, some may disagree with this next statement, but the difference between good discourse and bad discourse depends on the presence of resources. Resources establish credibility in ones' opinion and or points. They inform subsequent works, and if you're bibliography and research nerd, they are excellent road maps to other sources of information that you can sink your teeth into. Really exciting stuff, I know. But, when those resources aren't made readily available, that's where discourse breaks down. Without them, there's a few formal problems, like credibility and the questioning of objectivity. Mainly, the problem- is without resources how were you able to effectively formulate your contribution to the discussion at hand, and why should others participate with you.One of the key ways we talk about music with musicians, is by asking about their influences. Influences tell us so much about who we're speaking with and how they developed. They give us a way to describe an artist's sound. Influences tell the story of formative discovery. They give us a timeline of the kinds of music that shaped an artist in different eras. Influences allow us to argue what was ultimately important in flows of time and culture. See where I'm going with this? Musical influences are just one part, but a big one in terms of musical resources.Artists don't owe us that information. We know that. "What are your influences?" Is a boring question and its asked in pretty much every interview. They can keep their secrets, but its nice when that door is open.Which brings us to this episode's guests- The Boxmasters. The Boxmasters is made up of Bill Bob Thornton and JD Andrews. Thornton and Andrews in 2007 when Thornton brought in Andrews as a sound engineer for his 2007 record "Beautiful Door".  The two found that the had similar approaches and views of music and started playing together somewhat regularly. After some time, the two began recording and eventually created their band "The Boxmasters" the name comes from southern slang referring to a hotshot with echoes of Porter Wagoners "The Wagonmasters" which Thornton had previously played in for a time. Since 2007, the group has toured extensively with the likes of Willie Nelson and Ray Price, taking a break between 2010-2015 where they reconvened to make the record "Somewhere Down the Road". The released their latest album "Help Im Alive" in April of 2022 (when this interview was recorded). The Boxmasters do not shy away from their influences and what the build their sound on. Pulling from groups like The Beatles, The Rolling Stone, Mott and the Hoople- the duo works to echo the sounds the personally loved from the 60's and 70's- whilst also giving it a somewhat more southern edge with original lyrics.. all topped off with classic Bakersfield like production. And neither Andrews or Thornton will shy away from telling you as such.

Billy Bob Thornton has done an excellent job of not letting his acting, writing, and Academy Award winning get in the way of his music career.  He's been in bands since middle school and has made music a central part of his enviable life.  J.D. has also been busy as an in-demand audio engineer and composer working with artists such as The Rolling Stones, The Pussycat Dolls and Will Kimbrough as well as contributing to various TV and film projects.  Put these massive musical minds together and you get The Boxmasters.  The accidental band that since 2007 has turned out about a dozen albums, toured with Willy Nelson, and played all over North America.  The guys stopped by the studio for a casual chat before their sold out show at the Rhythm Room.  When you get a few people like this in a room, you know there are going to be some outrageous things said.  And that they are probably true.  Don't miss it.

As primary songwriters, the sound of the Boxmasters has been an evolution as the duo constantly strive to find new inspiration, new sounds and new ways of expressing what is in their hearts and on their minds. But at the core, there is a backbeat, a lyric with meaning and music played with emotion.  As a touring band, The Boxmasters have cultivated a rabid cult fanbase across the United States and Canada. Opening for the likes of ZZ Top, Steve Miller, George Thorogood and Kid Rock The Boxmasters have proven to win over large audiences. As a headliner, frequent stops in Kansas City at “Knuckleheads”, Springfield, Illinois at “Boondocks” and “Merrimack Hall” in Huntsville, Alabama have shown dedicated yet still growing audiences. Two appearances at Levon Helm's “Midnight Ramble” in Woodstock, New York were highlight performances for the band, as well as the “Ramble at The Ryman” that Levon hosted in 2008. The Boxmasters performed on “The Grand Ole Opry” in 2015, another in a growing resume of must-play venues.

Growing up in a musical and artistic household, Angela picked up her first guitar at the age of 9 and quickly immersed herself in many styles of music. At 13 Angela started studying under renowned Blues guitarist Little Jimmy Scott and started to hone her style as a musician.    In 2013, Angela founded the band Roses & Cigarettes with LA singer-songwriter Jenny Pagliaro. Roses & Cigarettes released a few albums - A self-titled debut in 2015, the “Acoustic Sessions” EP in 2018, followed by Echoes and Silence, in 2019. Then tragically in 2019 Jenny lost her battle with breast cancer and Angela found herself without her best friend, and without her band. She shares her experience, the struggles and the triumphs as she navigated the grieving process.    Angela also has a great perspective on how to structure your life so you can do the things you love, which for her is to create music and play the hell out of that guitar.    As the pandemic canceled live music across the country, she had to reinvent herself. Today Angela can be seen playing her favorite guitar riffs on her social media channels, as well as demoing guitars as host of “Petrilli Picks” on the “Norman's Rare Guitars” YouTube Channel. Angela is the host of a weekly YouTube Livestream called, “Riff Rundown.” Where she teaches interactive guitar lessons of her favorite songs and riffs.    In 2020, Angela's new project, Angela Petrilli & The Players, made its debut at the legendary Sunset Sound Studios in Hollywood, CA. Hello Doccalos. Get Your Herzog flavored Faygos up in the air because Angela and Bob are ready to put the spotlight on another musical act that is propped up on celebrity money. This next band you think you may enjoy on paper, but seeing it happen is another result entirely. We don't even get to the music in this one, because Billy Bob Thornton and his Boxmasters have a bone to pick with the host of QTV. (Turns out the host is called Q. We think.) Actually, the Boxmasters seem pretty damn chill about it. Billy Bob, on the other hand, does not want any references to the fact that he is an award winning actor to come up in band interviews. This two year old (at the time) "Modbilly" act is on nationally syndicated shows on its own merit and it has NOTHING to do with the celebrity of Bill Bob Thornton. Angela is still cringing from this one. No other Boxmasters video comes close to the views on Billy Bob Thornton's 'Blow Up' on QTV video. Hey. He will always have "Randy, You Tunin' Son of a Bitch" and "Go Fuckin' Practice, Randy!" from the always quotable film "Sling Blade". Bob just might get a tattoo of Dwight Yoakam from "Sling Blade". Today's Guest: Billy Bob Thornton, actor, Bad Santa, Monster's Ball, Sling Blade, singer, "Beautiful Door" Order by clicking the CD cover above (JULY 2007) You just can’t pigeonhole Billy Bob Thornton. Think about the movie roles he’s most famous for and see what, if any, connection there is: Carl in Sling Blade; Hank Grotowski in Monster’s Ball; Morris Buttermaker in Bad News Bears; Coach Gaines in Friday Night Lights, and my favorite, Willy in Bad Santa. Who would figure that the guy who portrayed so many varied and somewhat disturbed characters had a musical soul too? But, this month, Billy Bob Thornton’s fourth CD, Beautiful Door, will be released. It’s a collection of original, contemporary songs with a touch of country, all written and sung by Thornton. He also is the drummer on the album’s tracks. And just like his choices as an actor, no two songs on the album are easily matched and categorized. You’ll recognize his deep voice instantly on the somber opening ballad, “It’s Just Me,” but be surprised that it’s also him on the rockin’ “Hope for Glory.” BILLY BOB THORNTON audio excerpt: "Probably the funniest story that ever happened on any movie was on a movie called Pushing Tin that I did with John Cusack up in Canada. The story is way too long to tell here, but let’s just put it this way: we played a pretty decent practical joke on John, who has a weak stomach, and we got him good. It was a very elaborate plan, and about two weeks later, he got me back. We’ll just say it involved a sheep, a real live sheep, and some lingerie."  BOB ANDELMAN/Mr. MEDIA: Billy Bob, this was my first exposure to your music, and I’ve got to admit, I was a little surprised at how gentle and calm most of it is. BILLY BOB THORNTON: Yeah, it’s kind of a vibey record. When we play live, we’re a little bit more of a big rock show. On the records, we tend to do kind of somewhere in between J.J. Cale and Johnny Cash kind of stuff. But I’ve always been into real moody records, and that’s what we try to do. Like you said, we’ve got a couple of tunes that are a little more raucous, but for the most part, it’s a real vibey record. ANDELMAN: It was a little against type from what I was expecting, I guess, or what I thought the type was. Obviously, I was wrong. Is this album very different from the three that preceded it? THORNTON: Well, it’s pretty similar to the first one, Private Radio, as well as the third one, which was called Hobo. But the second record we did was called The Edge of the World and it was kind of all over the map, that record, our second one. It had everything from rock songs to country songs on it, and you can’t do that anymore. These days people want records that kind of sonically and lyrically all fit the same vibe like it used to be in 1968 or 1970. You could have a record with all types of songs on it, but I’m not sure if it’s the people or record labels, but they want to put it into a category. I suppose a lot of that is because of the radio. When I was a kid, you would hear James Taylor and Black Sabbath on the same station. There’s the contemporary country station, and then there’s the pop station, and everybody has to be in a category. ANDELMAN: Plus, with the downloading of music, people can just pick the songs that they want, so if it’s not all of a type, they may pick one particular song that they like, but if the next one doesn’t sound like it, they’re only going to take that one song. THORNTON: Right. Exactly. ANDELMAN: I guess the Billy Bob I was expecting was the one in the song “I Can Tell You,” the guy who says, “I can tell you some crazy stories, I bet they’d make you run away.” Not so many of those kinds of stories in there. THORNTON: It’s funny when people say something seems to be “a personal record” or “Is it autobiographical?” It’s always a little of both. Most things you write about, they’re stories that either you’ve observed or been involved in or are yourself. I think the best way to write is from personal experience. Like, for instance, I wouldn’t make a very good science fiction writer. I pretty much have to write about stuff that I’ve either observed or been involved in myself. ANDELMAN: You haven’t been in outer space? THORNTON: Well, in some ways I have. ANDELMAN: Okay. THORNTON: No question about it. ANDELMAN: Thank you for clarifying that. You’ve been playing music an awful long time. You’ve got your chops, but what drives you to keep making music now? Certainly, you’re not in it for the income. THORNTON: Well, I’m not in movies for the income, either. If I didn’t love it and want to do it, I wouldn’t. If I wasn’t having fun at it and didn’t get fulfillment from it – there are a lot of jobs you can make money at. I could have gone into the oil business or something else maybe, but I doubt they would’ve had me. It’s kind of funny. I end up answering a lot of questions about that. I guess the answer to that would be, my answer would be the same answer as Tom Petty or Fall Out Boy or Jack White or Ozzy Osbourne. I’m not sure what they would answer if you asked them that question. I would imagine it would be, “Well, what else would I do?” ANDELMAN: Are you more likely to hang out with musicians or actors? THORNTON: I hang out mostly with musicians. I have a few actor friends, not many, and most of the ones that I have are not very famous ones. They’re guys that I came up in the theater with mostly. Frankly, I don’t hang out with many famous people at all. I’ve got all these kids, so I kind of just stay home and don’t do much of anything. Play with kids and record music and then when I go away, it’s usually to make a movie or to go on tour with the band. ANDELMAN: I suspect, without getting into it, that you’ve had enough exposure to being very famous and very visible, and you could certainly choose one or the other - to be famous and visible, or not to be. THORNTON: Oh yeah. That part of it is not my favorite part, the old going out in public part. I’m still embarrassed by it, frankly. ANDELMAN: Really. THORNTON: Oh, yeah. ANDELMAN: Does the musician in you make different choices than the actor? THORNTON: No, it’s pretty much the same thing. I guess there have been choices as an actor that have been slightly different than doing music. If I were playing music to sell 5 million records, I would certainly write different kinds of music than I do. I don’t exactly write commercial music. I have, however, as an actor a couple of times, done bigger movies, Armageddon, for instance, stuff like that. I doubt you’ll ever see me making some kind of pop or hip-hop record or a contemporary country record, either. ANDELMAN: You haven’t made the musical equivalent of Bad News Bears yet, either. THORNTON: No, although we’ve got a few coming out pretty soon on another record that could be a little bit Bad Santa-like. ANDELMAN: Really? Got to pause there and tell us more about that. THORNTON: My band is called The Boxmasters, and we are making a record under just the band name, which will have my name on it, but it’s the same exact people. The record’s gonna have an explicit lyrics sticker on it, but it’s kind of a hillbilly/punk record which is something we do live a lot. Order from Amazon.com by clicking the DVD cover above ANDELMAN: That should be very interesting. THORNTON: In fact, we’re opening for ourselves on tour. ANDELMAN: Is that right? THORNTON: Oh yeah. ANDELMAN: Do you get paid double when you do that? How does that work? THORNTON: The Boxmasters only get like $200 bucks a night for the whole band, and they have to ride another bus. Even though it’s the same band, we still treat ourselves really bad when we’re The Boxmasters. ANDELMAN: I was gonna say… THORNTON: We treat ourselves as an opening act. ANDELMAN: My old days of covering music years ago, I think the attitude was you always had an opening band that was never as good as the headliner? THORNTON: Right. Exactly. We try to be just as good, but we still treat ourselves like crap when we’re the headliner. ANDELMAN: Have your music and film careers ever met? Has any of your music accompanied a film, for example? THORNTON: Well, actually, I’ve cut a couple of songs for TV shows that are not out yet that are coming out. I was asked to do a Hank Williams cover for a Canadian television show that’s gonna be on this coming year, and then there’s another show on Showtime that we did an opening credit song for. So I’ve done that, but I haven’t done anything for my own movies. I tend to be more willing to do music for a movie that I don’t have anything to do with really. I try to keep the two as separate as possible. ANDELMAN: I understand. Let me ask you this: could you pick out a song or two from Beautiful Door and maybe tell us a little about them? THORNTON: Well, the song “Beautiful Door,” the title song, is an anti-war song, really. Normally, I haven’t put real political songs on my records. This whole record, really, the theme of it, is life and death and how important life is and how we need to treat it and about having to face death. It’s both on a personal level and a global level. There is a song on there that’s about not judging a book by its cover. There’s three sort of anti-war songs as well as a couple of songs about suicide and how that affects the people you leave behind because of your choice. So it’s really a record about life and death. The song “Beautiful Door” is about religion being mixed with war and politics so much and how it seems that the people that die are the people who don’t really care. It’s like the people who aren’t involved in it are the people that usually get it, and the big chiefs are the ones that live except for in a couple instances recently. It doesn’t point fingers at any particular group. It points a finger at everybody, the East as well as the West and everything. So the song is as much about our system as it is anybody else’s. It’s just saying, “If you think there’s some magical answer on the oth
