Editors - Claire Simpson and Sam Restivo GLADIATOR 2 editors Claire Simpson and Sam Restivo first teamed up when Sam worked as her assistant editor on the tv series RAISED BY WOLVES (2020).  From there, Claire brought Sam as her assistant to his first Ridley Scott feature, THE LAST DUEL (2021).  He would assist Claire one more time for Scott's HOUSE OF GUCCI (2021) before getting the promotion to co-editor for NAPOLEON (NAPOLEON). Released twenty-four years after the original GLADIATOR (2000) film, GLADITAOR 2 takes place sixteen years after young Lucius witnesses the death of Maximus at the hands of his uncle.  In the long-awaited sequel, Lucius must enter the Colosseum after the powerful emperors of Rome conquer his home. With rage in his heart and the future of the empire at stake, he looks to the past to find the strength and honor needed to return the glory of Rome to its people. CLAIRE SIMPSON Claire first worked for Ridley Scott on his 1987 film SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME.  Even though that was only her fifth film credit, she was already an Oscar-winning editor having won the big prize for cutting PLATOON (1986) the year prior.  She also cut director Oliver Stone's film SALVADOR (1986) during that time.  Claire would go on to do other films with both Oliver Stone and obviously Ridley Scott, and she would also receive an Oscar nomination for her work on the 2006 film, THE CONSTANT GARDENER. SAM RESTIVO Aside from his work with Claire Simpson and Ridley Scott, Sam has worked as an assistant editor on TV series like THE WALKING DEAD (2014) and BETTER CALL SAUL (2015) as well as being an additional editor for features such as THE GREATEST SHOWMAN (2017) and ROBIN HOOD (2018). Editing GLADIATOR 2 In our discussion with GLADIATOR 2 editors Claire Simpson and Sam Restivo, we talk about: Alternating big and small projects with Ridley Scott Working with baboons in suits How Ridley edits with a brick The built-in logic of action editing If all else fails, get a reaction from the royal box The Credits Visit ExtremeMusic for all your production audio needs Learn all about what's new with Avid Media Composer Hear Sam talk about cutting NAPOLEON Subscribe to The Rough Cut podcast and never miss an episode Visit The Rough Cut on YouTube

“Jazz was the first music that I ever heard. It was introduced to me by my Dad who always played jazz around the house. He regularly sat me down and told me to listen closely to the music, that jazz was life.” Her beloved father passed away when she was 11. “The last time I saw him, he was at the hospital, had me driven in, and he told me that he wanted me to promise him something. He wanted me to promise him that I would sing jazz after I became a woman. Years passed, life went on, and I became involved in performing and recording r&b. But when I was completing the second CD in 2013, I kept on thinking about my last conversation with my Dad. It was as if he was reminding me about my promise. I decided that I would see if I had what it took to sing jazz.” Douye' has since worked very hard at finding her own place in the jazz world. Rather than doing it halfway or merely copying the great jazz singers of the past, she was determined to study hard, learn a countless number of songs, and sing jazz in her own way. She paid close attention to the reactions of the audience and the musicians when she appeared at jazz jams at the World Stage in Los Angeles. “If I did not sound any good, they would certainly tell me! I gained the courage to give it a real try after getting some confirmation from the jazz crowd that I could do this.” Daddy Said So features Douye' singing a set of classic jazz standards. Her voice is attractive, warm, and quietly emotional, has a solid sense of swing, and she clearly has a deep understanding of the lyrics. It is an awe-inspiring jazz debut for the up-and-coming singer. Rather than utilize the same group of musicians on each selection, a wide variety of brilliant jazz artists make memorable appearances throughout the release. Douye' originally made demos of the songs that she planned to record, sent them to many of her favorite musicians, and happily discovered that every artist was interested in being on her project. Douye' recorded “Nature Boy” as a duet with the immortal bassist Ron Carter. “It was funny. He suggested that we meet for the session at 11. I said, ‘Alright but I would be there at 10:30.' Ron Carter replied that he would make it by 10:30 too. I arrived at the studio at 10:17 and he was already there! I think we were finished with ‘Nature Boy' before 11.” “Mood Indigo” and “I Loves You Porgy” were recorded with veteran pianist Kenny Barron's trio. “But Beautiful” and “All The Things You Are” feature a talented Nigerian tenor-saxophonist Zem Audu and pianist Benito Gonzalez. Douye' originally recorded “Lush Life” and “Sophisticated Lady” as duets with her friend the late pianist Joel Scott. Later, tasteful bass and drum parts were added but Douye' kept Scott's beautiful accompaniment intact. “Round Midnight” and “In A Sentimental Mood” was performed with pianist-arranger John Beasley and a few of Los Angeles' top jazz players (saxophonist Bob Sheppard, bassist John Clayton, and drummer Roy McCurdy). Check out Douye's deep-toned vocal on “' Round Midnight” and Beasley's emulation of Duke Ellington's piano playing on “In A Sentimental Mood” from Duke's famous collaboration with John Coltrane. Every performance has its special moments. The great guitarist Russell Malone not only arranged “Body And Soul” but organized a group that included trumpeter Jeremy Pelt and drummer Willie Jones III. “Autumn Leaves” (arranged by Angelo Metz as was “Besame Mucho”)) and “Someone To Watch Over Me” (arranged by Phil Small and produced by Metz) find Douye' joined by the Kim Richmond Orchestra while the warm tenor-sax of Justo Almario co-stars on “Besame Mucho.” Also included on Daddy Said So is a very spirited rendition of “Summertime” that was recorded in New York with a band of young Cuban Americans led by drummer-arranger Zack O'Farrill (the 21-year-old son of Arturo O'Farrill). “I'm so grateful,” says Douye'. “While it took time to coordinate everyone's schedules, each session came together very quickly. It was so enjoyable that it confirmed my decision to sing jazz.” Douye' was born in Lagos, Nigeria, and regularly spent her summers in England. She was in a church choir in Africa when she was quite young and often sang along with recordings from her father's record collection. Douye also wrote poems and songs as she grew up. Early on she knew that singing was going to be her lifelong love. In her pursuit of singing, she moved to Los Angeles to attend the Musicians Institute as a vocal major. While attending school, she met songwriter Terry Shaddick who had composed the giant hit “Physical” for Olivia-Newton John. Shaddick and Douye' soon formed a musical partnership, writing all of the fresh new music for her first two albums Journey and So Much Love. During this era, Douye' performed classic r&b inspired by Anita Baker, Sam Cooke, Sade, Regina Belle, Rachelle Ferrell, and other major soul singers. In this episode, Douye shares her background, education, and musical journey.

The latest Blu-ray and DVD releases from BARRY FORSHAW - LINE OF DUTY to Rupert Davies' MAIGRET. Also an interview with KIM NEWMAN about his novel due in November SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT, also horror, Hollywood and modelling villains on Elon Musk.SOMETHING MORE THAN NIGHT: Hollywood, the late 1930s. Raymond Chandler writes detective stories for pulp magazines, and drinks more than he should. Boris Karloff plays monsters in the movies, and is a genial, cricket-playing member of the British filmland colony on the shores of the Pacific. Both understand that these streets are dark with something more than night. Together, these English public school men in exile investigate mysterious matters in a town run by human and inhuman monsters. Under Home House, the mock gothic mock mansion of a film mogul, is a mad science dungeon just like in the movies – where an experiment has gone dangerously wrong, or even more dangerously right. Fiery death spills onto Sunset Boulevard. Fired by the DA, investigator John Devlin enlists Ray and Billy – Chandler and Pratt (Karloff) – to work the case, which threatens to expose Hollywood's most horrific secrets. Here's a radio transcription for which we know nothing at all, save what we hear. The disk had lost its label, and with it went the hope of knowing where it fell in the chronology of the show. It's the longer nearly fifteen minute format, and Bob used "Lady Be Good" as both the intro and outro (not very long into the series, he went with "Sweet Georgia Brown" for the intro), so potentially it's early in the scheme of things. Let's table that for now, and check it out: Bob leading the quartet, with Ray Sherman playing piano, Jud De Naut on bass, and Nick Fatool on drums. First up "The Continental", followed by our old friend Margo Powers to sing "Tico Tico". Back to the quartet for the instrumental combo of "All The Things You Are" with "Someone To Watch Over Me". Margo comes back to croon the sweet tune "Sposin'", with a great solo by Bob. The quartet closes the set out with "Anitra's Boogie". Bob's holiday bonus for us all!

Good news, everyone! Evan watched the Adam Sandler/Jennifer Aniston Netflix flick MURDER MYSTERY (6:03) so you don’t have to! And is it good? Well…it’s not terrible. That’s something. Kris caught the new Dave Bautista/Kumail Nanjiani vehicle (ha) STUBER (18:43), a comedy with better action scenes than comedy scenes. Then it’s time to keep up with the Jensons, as Kris re-watched THE SPY WHO DUMPED ME (30:15) and has some new insight into the opening 15 minutes that kind of drove all three guys nuts. Then in a sort-of Riedel’s recap, Dave talks about Ridley Scott’s SOMEONE TO WATCH OVER ME (32:35), a forgotten thriller in the director’s canon. Finally, because it’s a slow new-release week, Evan, Kris, and Dave watched Alfred Hitchcock’s TO CATCH A THIEF (37:40), which none of them had seen before. Spoiler alert: Lesser Hitchcock is still pretty fun. Patrons! Thank you for your patronage and don't forget to vote in our poll!

Ray Sherman returns for good, with Ralph Collier covering drums and percussion, and Jud De Naut the steady man on the bass. After our "Sweet Georgia Brown" intro, the guys salsa their way through "Brazil", then song star Margo Powers gives us our first holiday tune, the classic "The Christmas Song" (note Ray's alternating between celeste and piano). Bob and the guys then serve up an inventive, apt combination of "All The Things You Are" and "Someone To Watch Over Me". Margo comes back for the beautiful "Say It Isn't So" before the guys carry us out with "Blue Room" (Ray previously played it in Episode 13; Tommy Todd in Episode 18). Happy holidays indeed!

We skip along to November 1, 1948-the day before Dewey defeated Truman, and the day that Bob, Jud De Naut (bass), Ralph Collier (drums), and Tommy Todd (piano) first got together on the air. We can hear Todd's unique approach right away on the Sweet Georgia Brown intro. It may be that Tommy could have used one more rehearsal on “Cuanto Le Gusta”, a tune recorded by Carmen Miranda, Bing Crosby, and Jack Smith (with the Clark Sisters). Note how Ralph Collier deftly switches from maracas to brushes, then back to maracas and bongo. Our clever announcer Eddie sidles up to song star Margo Powers before she caresses the Gershwin classic “Someone To Watch Over Me”, with Tommy more than redeeming himself in accompaniment. Bob's bop tune “Hop The Ditty” showcases Todd and Bain's inventiveness and highlights the group's tight co-ordination. The rather more pedestrian “Slow Boat To China” swings well and Margo sounds great. The group closes out the show with “'S Wonderful” and Tommy Todd again displays the skills and promise which Bob saw in him.

EVENING IN PARADISEThe life of Jimmy Scott is not one of meteoric stardom but a journey that has taken nearly seventy years to find its much deserved success.James Victor Scott, one of ten children, was born in Cleveland, Ohio on July 17, 1925. He's known for his high haunting soprano voice & poignant balladeering. His up & down recording career, started in the early 1950's, saw a resurgence in the 1990's when he was signed to Sire Records and received a Grammy nomination after a long period of commercial inactivity. Soon after coming out of retirement, he was seen on stages around the world, performing magical & heart breaking interpretations of old torch songs, Broadway standards and even a smattering of choice modern rock tunes done with generally sparse jazz arrangements.Almost strangled by the umbilical cord at birth, then orphaned as a boy in depression era Cleveland, the odds against Jimmy Scott ever suceeding were further stacked by an abnormal genetic pituitary hormonal defect known as "Kallman's Syndrome" which accounts for his somewhat effeminate looks & unnaturally high singing voice.Finding solace onstage, he sang in combos of the post war R&B era, notably as a featured singer with band leader Lionel Hampton, with whom he made his recorded debut in 1950(although his name did not appear on the label). He was finally signed to a steady record deal when he was almost 30, when Herman Lubinsky of Newark's Savoy Records offered Cleveland's finest balladeer a shot circa 1954. Lubinsky, whose label was a great repository of jazz & blues recordings, was also a notorious shyster. In David Ritz's 2002 bio of Jimmy Scott "Faith In Time", Seymour Stein of Sire Records recalls past colleagues at the time calling Savoy Record's Newark HQ the "Slave Barracks". Savoy recorded some well received Little Jimmy Scott sides, but due to Lubinsky's malfeasance, Scott went mostly uncompensated. As time wore on, he grew discontent, started retreating into booze and left the label's fold by the beginning of the 1960's.Over the years the Lubinsky/Savoy contract would stifle Scott in numerous ways, particularly when he tried to break free and record for Ray Charles' Tangerine label in the early 1960's and another time with Atlantic in the late 1960's. Lubinsky would battle to have the records withdrawn, keeping Scott's music from ever hitting the streets en masse.1969's attempt at a comeback LP "The Source" was produced by Joel Dorn for Atlantic, featuring backing from a hot group of players including David Fathead Newman on tenor sax, Eric Gale on guitar and Ron Carter on bass...The record was withdrawn due to lawsuit after the first pressing, for a longtme making it a rare and often bootleged masterpiece.Jimmy's numerous shots at stardom were so hampered by the fiscal mismanagement & bad business dealings, it lead him to frustration, failed relationships, drinking and drugging, and a career ending downward spiral that took him away from the limelight. His talent was never in doubt, but his successes were measured at best.A favorite of performers ranging from Billie Holiday & Dinah Washington, to Frankie Valli, Stevie Wonder, and John Lennon, all whom knew of and expressed respect of his work. Said Quincy Jones once,'Jimmy would tear my heart out every night with his soul-penetrating style"...Even Madonna has said "Jimmy Scott is the only singer who makes me cry,"Strangely enough, it appears death that actually the catalyst that brought Scott's career back to life...By the late 70's and early 80's some of his only gigs were occasional charity appearances at senior citizen homes. Scott's day jobs at Bob's Big Boy and in a Cleveland Sheraton hotel gave him a mindset that was set far from keeping abreast of the changing tastes of a fickle record buying public at the tail end of the 20th century. In 1985, at age 60, he returned to the eastern seaboard, and for the first time in over a decade started working small clubs in New York and Harlem, perhaps getting occasional nostalgic write ups in the NY Times or Village Voice. Scott's subsequent shift back into the public eye ironically began to truly gather momentum at The Riverside Funeral Home on St.Patrick's Day 1991. The sad/happy occasion was legendary rock n roll songwriter and old friend Doc Pomus' funeral.Jimmy had met Pomus back in the 40's, and they had stayed in touch. In fact, in 1987 Doc even wrote a letter to trade publication Billboard extolling Scott's virtues, decrying the hard times he was going through, and warning the record industry not to sleep on a chance to catch the long overdue second coming of Little Jimmy Scott. Now a few years later, Scott sat Shiva and was asked by Doc's family to perform "Someone To Watch Over Me" at the funeral, along with backing from fellow old timers Dr. John on piano and Fathead Newman on sax. Scott arrived early and sat unasumedly with hands folded in the back with his 4th wife Earlene. After the colorful eulogies, Jimmy's haunting voice over the tinkling keys stunned the room, with many so far back they could barely see his tiny head over the crowd. The room was filled with dozens of music biz luminaries, like Ahmet Ertegun, Jerry Wexler, and the aforementioned Seymour Stein of Sire who felt it was almost his spiritual duty to Doc to simply offer Scott a dignified deal.Jimmy later told a reporter in 2000 of the bittersweet good fortune coming from his friend's death, " The next day, this cat from Warners comes over with a contract. It was like Doc's hand reaching out from the grave."He went on to many new career highights ranging from appearing in David Lynch's Twin Peaks & having sold out shows across the US & Europe to performing onstage at Bill Clinton's inaugural ball gala in DC.Still Scott copes with the fact that his type of fame is fleeting, and has duly noted this phenomena when he sang onstage in the 1990's with the Grateful Dead to a crowd of thousands in his hometown of Cleveland, where the local daily paper referred to him as an "unknown female singer".Since the quirky career kickstart given to Scott from Pomus' funeral, he has continued touring, recorded some 8 or so albums on half dozn labels, and added a 5th wife to his bio as well. Now with his aged infirmities creeping in, Scott is restricted to moving around onstage via wheelchair...Music continues to be his life into his eighties, once telling ajournalist “I love performing. You live with reality every day. You can’t miss it. We can try to avoid a lot of trials in life, but it’s better to overcome than avoid. That’s what music has been for me. It’s been my opportunity to overcome.”"All I can do is give what I really feel." "It'll work out in the end. You gotta believe" Jimmy ScottTo Visit JIMMY SCOTT'S website CLICK HERE

Nigeria's Nollywood has the second largest film industry in the world by volume - yet very few African films make it into mainstream British cinemas. Gaylene Gould looks at why films such as District 9 from South Africa and Congolese gangster movie Viva Riva! have been successful internationally, whilst many critically-acclaimed African films only make it to art-house cinemas and film festivals. Gershwin's classic song Someone To Watch Over Me features on the new albums from Susan Boyle, Twiggy and Alfie Boe. It also appears every night in the musical Crazy For You, currently running in London. Gareth Valentine, musical supervisor of the show, analyses why the song is still popular 85 years after it was written. Producer: Philippa Ritchie.
