This week, renowned Mississippi blues guitarist and singer Alvin Youngblood Hart recorded live at Ozark Folk Center State Park. Alvin Youngblood Hart was born in Oakland, California in 1963 and spent some time in Carroll County, Mississippi in his youth, where he was influenced by the Mississippi country blues performed by his relatives. Hart is known as one of the world's foremost practitioners of country blues. He is also known as a faithful torchbearer for 1960s and 1970s guitar rock as well as western swing and traditional country. His style has been compared to Lead Belly and Spade Cooley. Bluesman Taj Mahal once said about Hart: "The boy has got thunder in his hands." Hart himself said, "I guess my big break came when I opened for Taj Mahal for four nights at Yoshi's." His debut album, Big Mama's Door, was released in 1996 on Okeh Records. In 2003, Hart's album Down in the Alley was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album. In his segment “Back in the Hills,” writer, professor, and historian Dr. Brooks Blevins investigates the history of tourism in the entertainment Mecca of the Ozarks: Branson, Missouri.

ZZ Top is one of my favorite bands and I'm trying to write this description quickly. I'm joined by Marc Stone (https://marcstonenola.wixsite.com/mysite). Marc is a terrific guitar player and roots music historian who has been a standout presence in New Orleans since the 1990s, playing alongside legends of Funk, Zydeco, RnB and Blues on stages across the globe. Right now, Marc is touring with funk guitar icon Leo Nocentelli (https://leonocentelli.com/)of The Meters behind Leo's historic rediscovered 1971 acoustic masterpiece "Another Side.” As we mention in the interview, they're playing in my former hometown of Hartford Connecticut at Infinity Hall tonight. Leo and Marc play at New York's Sony Hall on Sept. 24, at Philly's Ardmore Concert hall on Sept. 25 at the Hamilton in Washington DC on the 27th. Stone has been called a band-leading force in the Crescent City known for his fusion of modern and traditional blues, soul and funk —a sound he calls ‘roots in the present tense'" by repeat CDC podcast guest Alexander Zaitchik. He must like being called that because it's on his website, along with the following two paragraphs: When he's not on stage or in the studio, Marc can be found behind the mic at New Orleans' iconic radio sender, WWOZ 90.7-fm, celebrating 20 years hosting of his weekly “Soul Serenade” or spinning fine and funky vinyl at clubs and events. Stone is equally at home fronting his own band, leading intricate all star projects, and tearing it up for packed houses with just a guitar and a mic. Making the best of the pandemic shut down, Stone went to work on a new album to follow up 2019's solo outing “Live at Tipitina's”, which garnered him nominations from New Orleans top cultural publications for both Best Blues Album and Best Blues Performer. The result is “Shining Like A Diamond”, his first full length studio release since 2015. The album features an incredible line up and showcases Stone's soulful vocals, masterful touch on guitar, 8 string Dobro and lap steel, finely tuned songwriting skills, and a slew of incredible performers. Never one to lean on well worn forms and contrived chops showcases, Stone draws inspiration from every corner. He also taps a well-spring of legends to bring his songs to life, including Papa Mali, Alvin “Youngblood” Hart, Marilyn Barbarin, Leo Nocentelli, Reggie Scanlan, the late Alfred “Uganda” Roberts, Meschiya Lake, James Singleton, Mike Dillon, and George Porter, Jr.

“Philadelphia, Mississippi” Over the course of his nearly thirty year career, the Grammy-nominated G. Love has put out close to fifteen albums both solo and with his band Special Sauce. From Coast To Coast Motel, to Yeah, It's That Easy to The Juice, his catalog is a consistently effortless blend of blues, hip-hop, R&B and alternative rock. Throughout the years G. Love has collaborated with Dr. John and Jack Johnson, played the HORDE tour, acted as the house band for Comedy Central's "Turn Ben Stein On" series, and helped launch the Coca Cola advetisting campaign for Coke Zero with his own take on the track “I'd Like To Teach The World To Sing.” G Love's new album is Philadelphia, Mississippi and it is just what its title suggests: a seamless hybrid of hip-hop and the delta blues that combines to make the quintessential album of the summer of 2022. Or any summer. This is a summer record—from the breezy bliss of Laughing In The Sunshine to Love From Philly, which features Schooly D., the Luther Dickinson-produced album also features Speech from Arrested Development, Alvin Youngblood Hart and Chuck Treece. It's got swagger, it's got soul and it's got heart. It's a perfect record. www.philadelphonic.com www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenonline.com Stereo Embers The Podcast Twitter: @emberseditor Instagram: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com

We had the pleasure of interviewing G. Love over Zoom video.South of Market Street, south of the Liberty Bell, south of the Walt Whitman Bridge and Pat's and Geno's lies an entirely different Philadelphia: Philadelphia, Mississippi. On the surface, these two Phillies couldn't be any less alike—one, a bustling East Coast metropolis, the other, a small town a thousand miles away in the Deep South—but for G. Love, the connections were undeniable. Produced by North Mississippi All-Stars' Luther Dickinson, Philadelphia Mississippi brings together both sides of G. Love's eclectic career, mixing old school Hill Country and Delta Blues with new school hip-hop and funk to forge a sound that's both wildly innovative and deeply reverent all at once. The songs are loose and spontaneous here, often penned on the fly in improvisatory fits of inspiration, and the performances are similarly freewheeling, bringing together a slew of special guests from blues torchbearers like Alvin Youngblood Hart and Christone “Kingfish” Ingram to rap icons like Schoolly D and Speech from Arrested Development. It would have been easy for G. Love to play it safe coming off his GRAMMY-nominated 2020 release, The Juice, but Philadelphia Mississippi is perhaps his most adventurous, ambitious collection to date, tossing all the rules out the window as it experiments with form and function in an ecstatic celebration of music's power to connect across genres and generations. G. Love's upcoming album Philadelphia Mississippi will be available as a limited edition NFT. Making a Scene Presents Gerry Casey's Interview with Alvin Youngblood HartThe cosmic American love child of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray…Known as a “musician's musician,” Alvin Youngblood Hart's praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to guitar gods Gary Moore & Mick Taylor.Mr. Hart was born in Oakland CA in 1963 to a family of post WWII Mississippi transplants. After a couple false starts, he began to play the guitar, in earnest, in 1977.“By that time, it had become obsessive competition among us teenage boys. The guitar was the video game of our day,” Hart says.

Acabamos con James Maddock, un incondicional de Willie Nile y Karen Jonas, su quinto álbum The Southwest Sky and Other Dreams, un sueño de canciones americanas.⦁ Bruce Springsteen, Letter To You ⦁ Josh Ritter, Time Is Wasting ⦁ Lloyd Jones, Where's My Phone? ⦁ Grant Lee Phillips, Gather Up⦁ Vanessa Collier, Weep and Moan ⦁ Molly Tuttle, Standing On The Moon ⦁ Molly Tuttle (Feat. Music Makers and Soul Shakers Podcast with Steve Dawson

It’s the first Wednesday of the month, and as always we bring you a shiny new episode! This month’s guest is the phenomenal singer and guitar player, Alvin Youngblood Hart. I’ve known of Alvin since his debut record “Big Mama’s Door” came out in 1996, but got to know, play and tour with him a number of times since playing at a Mississippi Sheiks tribute show with him back in 2010. To me Alvin is totally unique as an interpreter of acoustic and country blues, but is also a killer rock guitarist, an amazing singer, and also gets into Merle Haggard songs like no one else. He has vast knowledge of rock, folk and blues music from the 20’s through the 70’s and plays it all. Alvin has an interesting history with making records, and while not overly interested in recording these days, has made a number of great records throughout his career, and is a Grammy Award winner. Alvin spent some time in the US Coast Guard, where he developed a love of electronics that continues to this day – working on amps, guitars, pickups and other components. He also has a knack for finding cheap guitars and turning them into screaming rock machines. We got to catch up a bit and discuss his history on stage and in the studio, his love of old gear, pawnshopping with Bo Diddley, and lots more. Enjoy my conversation with Alvin Youngblood Hart!
