Join Richard in this weeks veg grower podcast where this week its all about pruning. You may remember at the beginning of November we started to read the rhs pruning and training as our book of the month. well this week we can put that book into action and prune some of our trees and bushes. Time To Prune On The Allotment. Using this book Richard starts off on the allotment with pruning the Autumn Raspberries, which are some of the easiest soft fruits to prune. After that Richards attention turned to coppicing his hazel tree. Richard grows a Hazel tree to provide hazel nuts and bean sticks and coppicing is a great way to prolong the life of a tree and get hazel sticks from it. Then Richard turned to his pear tree and gave that a tidy up ensuring that no brunches where rubbing against each other. Supporters club. This podcast is supported by members of the supporters club. Click the button below to find out more Getting Clever With Pruning At Home In the vegetable garden located at Richard's home, Richard has continued tackling the pruning tasks starting with Summer Raspberries. Summer raspberries are not as easy to prune as Autumn Raspberries but Richard shares a little tip that might help make this job a little easier. Richard also tackles pruning a grape vine which is a little trickier to prune and then has started a project of creating a three tiered espalier apple tree. Something that will really test Richards pruning skills, but hopefully create a fine looking tree too. Recipe Of The Week Chef Scott isn't available this week but Richard has stepped in and has created a recipe that uses parts of the Brussel sprout plants that we don't usually use, the leaves. Ingredients 5 Fresh green leaves from a brussel sprout plant A knob of butter A splash of olive oil 1 garlic clove minced Method Cut the hard spine out of the leaves and discard. Take the remaining leaves and roll into a cigar then using a sharp knife slice into strips. In a pan melt the butter with the olive oil, then add the minced garlic. Once the garlic is soft add the chopped leaves and stir. Cook until the leaves are tender and serve immediately. Conclussion As Richard wraps up this weeks podcast Richard share his final thoughts on the book. He particularly says how he feels much more confident with pruning many trees and bushes. Richard also shares what the next book on the reading list is. Grow Veg Anywhere by Lucy Chamberlain is released on the 2nd January 2025 but is available for pre-ordering now. Resources  Meditations with Tara Brach Connect with Lucy ChamberlainAWS Summit London C&C Search LinkedIn Email Coaching with Angela Cox Listen to The Mindset Mentor MeetsThe Mindset Mentor Meets: Episode 5 with Lucy Chamberlain Episode Highlights  [02:03] What Has Changed in Lucy's Life? Lucy's battle with COVID-19 was challenging, yet it served as a catalyst for her personal and professional growth, especially in her role as the founder of C&C Search Following the pandemic, she dedicated herself to revitalizing and expanding her business, which has impressively grown from a small team of 5 to a vibrant group of 24 exceptional individuals. [03:38] Lucy's First Proudest Moment: Becoming a Certified B Corp Lucy's first proudest moment was achieving their B Corp certification as a company. The certification was an approval that their purpose-led business was on the right track. B Corp companies are companies that operate with society, the environment, and the company in mind.  Every part of the process, from hiring to giving back to the community, is assessed. This difficulty encouraged Lucy to evolve and develop the company. Approval and validation greatly matter to Lucy, but external validation won't give her true self-worth and self-trust. It's alright to seek external validation sometimes. The B Corp certification isn't about Lucy. Rather, it's about taking care of the people who work for her and their clients.  [11:42] Lucy's Second Proudest Moment: Growing Her Self-Trust Lucy was invited as a host to AWS Summit London to talk about developing true self-confidence. This achievement symbolizes how far she has come and her growth over the past few years.  Lucy once felt she had no value to share. Now, she's able to accept the invitation without self-doubt and speak from a place of authenticity. It was difficult to get to this part of her journey. She has always been an authentic person, but felt like she wasn't enough. Lucy no longer worries about what others think about her. Comfortably owning your power can change how you feel and connect with others.  [17:49] Lucy's Third Proudest Moment: Making Time for Self-Care Lucy finally went back to hot yoga this year. For Lucy, this is a significant step towards a healthier lifestyle and the future body she wants to live in. By making time for yoga, she is also practicing the habit of finishing work on time and getting ready. These small actions connect to small good habits. Hot yoga is a 90-minute moving meditation in an incredibly hot room. This challenge encourages Lucy to stop thinking and leaves her feeling peaceful and calm. For many, work can be something you both love and resent. However, having these habits and non-negotiables can shift the way you feel about work and your body. Micro changes such as these small things done regularly have a big impact on your life in the long run. [24:59] The Secret to Success: Small Acts of Courage Lucy's secret to success is the small acts of courage and self-trust that can help you grow. Start your day by thinking about what a good life would look like on that day. Pick two to three things that would help you create that life, but would take courage to do. They can be big or small acts. Lean into these small acts of courage and see them add up to a big change and growth. This is what success means to Lucy today.  5 Powerful Quotes [04:24] ‘I wanted to create a business with purpose. Having a purpose-led business has definitely been the aspect of what we do that's got me through the biggest challenges.' [12:11] ‘My ability to be comfortable in my own skin and know that what I have to share is of value is something that has felt very elusive for very well the vast majority of my life and my career. Instead of feeling anxious or nervous, I just was able to feel excited and proud and was able to grab the opportunity without second guessing myself.' [13:02] ‘I can do that now from a place of knowing that I have really fantastic, kickass tools to share and also storytelling. I can do that from a place of authenticity. I think I have always been an authentic person, but I've always been an authentic person that has questioned whether or not who I really am is enough.' [21:20] ‘Having those real, solid, non-negotiables slots in the diary, it's just transformative in terms of how you feel about yourself, about your work. It shifts an awful lot of crap.' [26:29] 'Leaning in to those little acts of courage starts to add up to big change and that lovely sense of growth towards the person and the future you wanted to live it.' Hello, I'm Mike Palmer, your host of the Mic The Gardener - Gardening Podcast, sponsored by Natural Grower. Welcome back to this week's episode. The Mic the Gardener Gardening Podcast has been up and running for just over a year now. In that year I have listened to more gardening podcasts than I've ever done before. One of my go-to podcasts is always Talking Heads, presented by Saul Walker and Lucy Chamberlain, who are both modern day head gardeners in private estates. This week I'm delighted to be joined by both Saul and Lucy who chat to me about their careers to date, their roles as head gardeners in private estates and much much more. If, like me, you listen to their podcast, you'll know I was legally obliged to start the conversation by talking about the weather, however, we also discussed: How their career paths crossed How they got started in the industry What the role of a modern Head Gardener is How much input their respective garden owners have on their gardens What Lucy & Saul's own gardens are like And their career aspirations are, and much more If you haven't already listened to the Talking Heads podcast, (and I can't believe you haven't), click on this link to have a listen. Thank you, as always for listening to this weeks podcast. If you haven't already, please do follow/subscribe and leave a review via your preferred podcast provider. You can also follow me on my Instagram account, @mike_thegardener where I have a live, weekly broadcast from my own garden, every Sunday at 10am (GMT). Join me next week when I will be discussing everything you need to know about growing sweet peas from seed with leading sweet pea expert, Roger Parsons. See you next week.

We are now firmly in winter, and you might be thinking that Head Gardeners Saul Walker and Lucy Chamberlain are taking things easy on their respective estates. But as these latest episodes will show, the two are fervently working away as busily as ever. With jobs such as planting, pruning, clearing and renovating on the cards, Lucy and Saul are at no risk of getting cold during this chillier season. The gardening friends are also busy thinking of the year ahead, so expect plenty of discussions about the weather, biscuits, buying new equipment, mowing, spreadsheets vs. lists, (more biscuits), and what plans they have for their own private gardens. When warm air and cold air do a merry dance about the North Atlantic waters, it concludes with turbulent times over the UK. Storms Dudley, Eunice, Franklin and Gladys wreaked their havoc last week, and now gardens up and down the country are clearing up the resulting damage. Lucy and Saul discuss the effects of these "once in a generation" wind speeds on the Donyland and Stonelands estates, plus they get to grips with a few impressive meteorological terms. Remedial pruning is also on the menu, and the duo achieve an optimistic attitude towards the opportunities this brings.Twitter links:Saul @GardeningSaulLucy @HeadGardenerLCIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)

Grow Your Own Food

WHY GROW YOUR OWN FOOD? There are a lot of reasons to grow your food. Here are five motivating reasons to grow your food. 1. FRESH AND HEALTHY FOOD 2. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT 3. GREATER CHOICE OF VEGETABLES & FRUITS 4. GOOD EXERCISE FOR HEALTH 5. FUTURE IS ORGANIC GARDENING FRESH AND HEALTHY We are all well aware that the route to good health is through eating more fruits and vegetables, but you may not have considered the direct benefits of growing them yourself. Vitamin and antioxidant levels are at their highest when crops are first picked, with the levels falling by half after a week or so. In shops, you can rarely tell how long ago “fresh” produce was picked or how well it has been stored, especially if it is imported or kept in refrigeration. When you have your own wigwam of runner beans, or a big pot of tomatoes on your patio, you can harvest and eat them within hours, or even minutes. GOOD FOR THE ENVIRONMENT Our planet is overheating and, we should concern about the impact of food production on the environment, especially in terms of the “food miles” that build up when we import crops over huge distances. When you grow your own, food miles are reduced to zero, and the carbon footprint is negligible. Fundamentally, the world's population has to feed, and by cultivating whatever space you have, you are making a small step to reduce the stress on global supply. If you wish, you will also be able to choose to grow your food organically. Life revolved around are changing, and there is no better way to discover the seasonal nature of food crops than to grow your own all year round. GREATER CHOICE In shops, you have a limited choice of types of strawberries, broccoli, or carrots, for example, because commercial growers are motivated by yield, shelf-life, and uniformity and grow vast monocultures of just a few varieties. When you grow your own, there are thousands of different crops and combinations to try with qualities suited to your tastes. You may never see 'Yin Yang' French beans or 'Double Red' sweetcorn in the supermarket, but you can grow them yourself. GOOD EXERCISE FOR HEALTH If you feel a bit confined in a gym, gardening provides a great alternative to exercise. One hour's digging can burn off more than 300 calories, and light pottering, weeding, mulching, watering, and planting involves lifting, stretching, and bending. It's the perfect workout. (Chamberlain 2020) THE FUTURE IS ORGANIC GARDENING Organic food is widely available in supermarkets and specialty stores; many governments support organic farming and research. More and more people are turning to organic methods of gardening. Every time there is another food scare or another pesticide's dangers come to light, more people turn to eat and grow organically. As climate change's effects become more prominent, and we are encouraged to reduce our “carbon footprint,” organic gardening offers practical ways to do this in the garden. Welcome to Episode #3 from the Festival Of Enterprise Podcast 2020."I work really practically in the industry, to highlight the talent pool that support staff provide the businesses and how those businesses can tap into that talent and maximise it. So it's about having, when we set up the business, it was about having a voice for change. It was about, not being like other recruitment companies, we looked at the businesses that we aspired to be. Some of those were cliched, you know, the Virgins, the Apples, the big brands, but where there was an ethos, where there was a strong message, where that message was felt by the team, so that when you walked in, you felt those core values. And you felt that this was a company that looked at individuals, you know, in holistic way."I talk to Lucy Chamberlain, founder of C&C Search a multi million pound business that collaborates with other female led businesses. Lucy is one of the business world's most popular motivational speakers. Lucy's business journey, has seen her work as a TV presenter, awards judge and leading coach. It's something that's felt - you can feel it, touch it, you can sense it. And it's. And it's something that's also forward thinking. It's got a forward motion that feels like it's creating a change for the better and in an industry it loves. So I love what we do. I love our industry, but I know that we should be evolving and getting better and better. And I think that's what a great business is all about."Join me later this week for the full episode with Lucy Chamberlain, founder of C&C Search a multi million pound business that collaborates with other female led businesses. In this episode Ruth speaks to Lucy Chamberlain founder of C&C Search. A multi award-winning HR and support staff specialist recruiter who have gone through a fast growth journey, turning over 3 million in year three. Lucy also has a project called the flex CNC flex pledge, which is all about supporting returners back into work in a way that's going to be able to allow them to be present at home for their children, to re enter the workplace at the career point they left rather than having to diminish their aspirations or capability. With a 20 year career tracking the industry’s leading recruitment companies, Lucy founded C&C search to redefine and elevate client and candidates’ recruitment experience. Coming through a challenging personal time – three years as a single mum, single-handedly responsible for her daughter – Lucy found her career was out of sync. In C&C, she’s built a successful business aligned with her high standards, ethics and goals, and created an inspiring workplace for her team to fulfil their own career goals. Innovative, unrelenting and fearless, learning to ask for help, advice and support has been key to her founder journey. She’s now paying it forward in abundance. Lucy and the C&C team actively collaborate with and support as many other female business leaders as possible; social consciousness and legacy is at the business’ core. As with many leaders, she’s dedicated every waking moment to getting C&C off the ground. Learning that balance is key, and self-care is important for every member of the team, this is embedded in the business culture. A mentor to her team, Lucy believes encouraging teams holistically, and nurturing happy, engaged, market-leading talent has the most impact on a company’s success. It’s this foundation that serves to empower, captivate and delight C&C’s clients as they build their own teams, and has been at the heart of our story.
