Subjected to more criticism than any other book now incorporated in the New Testament, the Apocalypse -- popularly accredited to St. John the Divine -- is by far the most important but least understood of the Gnostic Christian writings. Though Justin Martyr declared the Book of Revelation to have been written by "John, one of Christ's apostles," its authorship was disputed as early as the second century after Christ. In the third century these contentions became acute and even Dionysius of Alexandria and Eusebius attacked the Johannine theory, declaring that both the Book of Revelation and the Gospel according to St. John were written by one Cerinthus, who borrowed the name of the great apostle the better to foist his own doctrines upon the Christians. Later Jerome questioned the authorship of the Apocalypse and during the Reformation his objections were revived by Luther and Erasmus. The once generally accepted notion that the Book of Revelation was the actual record of a "mystical experience" occurring to St. John while that seer was an exile in the Isle of Parmos is now regarded with disfavor by more critical scholars. Other explanations have therefore been advanced to account for the symbolism permeating the volume and the original motive for its writing. The more reasonable of these theories may be summed up as follows: First, upon the weight of evidence furnished by its own contents the Book of Revelation may well be pronounced a pagan writing -- one of the sacred books of the Eleusinian or Phrygian Mysteries. As a corollary, the real author of a work setting forth the profundities of Egyptian and Greek mysticism must have been an initiate himself and consequently obligated to write only in the symbolic language of the Mysteries. Second, it is possible that the Book of Revelation was written to reconcile the seeming discrepancies between the early Christian and pagan religious philosophies. When the zealots of the primitive Christian Church sought to Christianize pagandom, the pagan initiates retorted with a powerful effort to paganize Christianity. The Christians failed but the pagans succeeded. With the decline of paganism the initiated pagan hierophants transferred their base of operations to the new vehicle of primitive Christianity, adopting the symbols of the new cult to conceal those eternal verities which are ever the priceless possession of the wise.

This week on Black Hoodie Alchemy, we have another special guest: the wonderful, talented and laid-back Ronnie Pontiac. Ronnie is the author of books like 'American Metaphysical Religion: Esoteric and Mystical Traditions of the New World', he's part of the punk rock duo Lucid Nation with his wife Tamra Lucid, and he also just so happened to work as the great Manly P. Hall's research assistant and substitute lecturer for the last seven years of Hall's life. For the first half of the show, we talk about the legacy of Manly Hall as seen and experienced by Ronnie and his wife, who were completely taken under the wing of Hall and his wife in a relationship that eventually grew to feel like grandparents and grandchildren. Ronnie shares many candid stories about Manly Hall and gives us further insights into his philosophies and personal conduct, but beyond this we also get into Ronnie's work 'American Metaphysical Religion', and what it means to consider American spirituality from an outside perspective that focuses less on labels and more on actual conduct. The insights from these perspectives are huge, and include contexts like, for instance, all of the alchemists that were prevalent in Colonial America. Yes, the history of America is a whole lot more esoteric than the 'Pilgrim' stereotypes would lead us believe, and with all this context, Ronnie helps me take a look at modern American spirituality as well. In today's episode we kick off a new series on the life and essential teachings of Manly P. Hall, the great America philosopher, sage, and initiate of 20th century America. In particular, our focus in this series will be on Hall's teachings about the current state of the world, the role the Mystery Schools continue to play in it, and what is to come in the new age we are, in fits and starts, gradually moving into. In this first article of the series, I discuss Manly Hall's path to becoming an esoteric philosopher, and overview some of his early teachings on the inner structure of the Mystery Schools. I also discuss how these Schools fit into a larger spiritual concept of life. The immortal Count of Saint Germain is a historical figure who appeared at the courts of Europe during the 1700s and 1800s. Over a period of a few hundred years, numerous European aristocrats would vouch for the reputation and assistance of this man. This Count of Saint Germain was alleged to be immortal and a master of the ancient mysteries. In the book "The Trinosophia of the Comte De St. Germain", Manly Hall delivers a compelling investigative piece into the history of his man. You can find the book here. In this episode, I read from the Trinosophia and talk about the possibility of the Count of Saint Germain existing. The latest discoveries in science suggest that immortality should be possible. Given this, it is fair to assume that someone has figured out that secret at some point in history. Such a person would indeed become an influential figure, given their immortal ability. In this episode I analyze  one of the key topics discussed in Dr. Tom Cowan's recent ebook "Breaking the Spell": virology's claim that it has successfully accomplished "virus isolation" for the various virus strains that they claim are responsible for the numerous disease epidemics that have occurred throughout recent  history, including COVID, AIDS, polio, and many others. As we will be exploring, it is far from conclusive that an entity called a "virus" actually exists in nature. Likely, virologists are mistaking "viruses" for  "exosomes" - packets of genetic information released as part of the natural process of cell sickness and death. These particles (exosomes) emerge from a cell  after the cell has already been sickened. They are not the cause of the cell being sickened; it is being sickened from other factors and is emitting the exosomes (mistaken as viruses) as an inevitable consequence of its sickness. The main idea here is that viruses are not disease-causing agents; they are not the cause of illness but a symptom or effect of a cell that has become sick for other reasons. Blaming illness on  contagious viruses is a red herring, one that distracts us from seeking out the true cause of disease.The question of what is actually causing tody's global epidemic of illness is a topic that many researchers are still exploring. But you don't have to have that answer completely figured out in order to disqualify other theories which have been proposed to explain the disease outbreak but which, upon consideration, have failed to persuasively argue its scientific case. In other words, we can falsify or "nullify" a theory that has been proposed without having already worked out what the correct explanation is. All we need to do is apply the scientific method to the theory; if it is not able to successfully pass through the requirements of the method, then the theory is 'nullified' - it is shown to be invalid.As it turns out, the virus theory of contagion does not pass the scientific method - it has been nullified; it does not qualify as a valid scientific hypothesis to explain how and why disease epidemics emerge in human beings. One or more other explanations are needed; the virus theory is done for. A further point must be considered: as long as we keep spending all our attention on viruses, we restrict and distract ourselves from going on the quest of finding the epidemic's true cause (which may be dynamic and include numerous variables, rather than just one). Ancient philosophy and science derived a great deal of symbolical knowledge and insight from the study of the human body. In the function of the body itself, man was presented with an immediate and intimate mystery. For the most part, this mystery has not been solved, even with our increasing scientific knowledge. We're able to examine the body in greater detail than ever before. We are able to understand its functions more accurately than was ever possible to ancient man. Yet the essential mysteries of the body remain and we are still searching for those major keys, by which, perhaps not only can we solve bodily mysteries, but by the knowledge thus gained extend ourselves into universal mysteries. For it was long held that if we could ever understand man we would have a key to all things that exist in as much as man is bound to all other things is derived from all other things. And in the course and extent of his existence, he moves through all states and conditions and finds available within himself all instruments necessary for his continuing existence, growth and unfoldment through all the states of nature, both physical and metaphysical. Realizing to some measure, therefore, the thoughtfulness that man dedicated to this mystery of the body. We can also be aware of the natural and inevitable functioning of the human mind. Man searching for answers, uses a kind of symbolic methodology. Having discovered some small law operating somewhere, he seeks to extend it as a greater law operating elsewhere or everywhere. Thus our concepts of cosmogony, our studies of things not visible to our sensory perceptions; these involve a process of analogy by which we apply things seen to things unseen. Here Manly P Hall interprets the different accounts of Atlantas and discusses both sides of the argument and then gives a symbolic interpretation of that myth. Plato's account of Atlantis in his Critias and Timaeus is interpreted. A diagram of the Orphic Key to the Atlantic Fable is included, as well as a bibliography. The most famous of all accounts describing the condition of Atlantis and the causes for its destruction are to be found in the Critias and Timaeus of Plato. Most modern books dealing with the problem of Atlantis are built upon Plato s description. The integrity and learning of this great philosopher cannot easily be assailed. Had it not been for the weight of Plato s authority, the whole subject would have been discredited by modern archeologists. There is, however, in fairness to both sides of the controversy, a certain weakness in Plato's story. The thoughtful reader is impressed immediately by the allegorical and symbolical parts of the account. While these do not detract from the possibility that an Atlantic continent actually existed, they do present the necessary elements for an alternative interpretation. The anti-Atlantists contend that in the Critias Plato takes a flight into fiction, in the words of Plutarch, "manuring the little seed of the Atlantis myth which Solon had discovered in the Egyptian temples." Manly P. Hall (1901-1990) was a seeker and lover of wisdom (the very definition of a philosopher) he had the courage and raw energy to look for wisdom in places most men had long since forgotten or never knew existed. As the Philosophical Research Society's founder and first president, he began his career in an era when most Americans did not look toward other cultures and traditions without looking down. And yet, Manly P. Hall spoke and wrote extensively on the wisdom found in all ancient traditions, and the deep cross-cultural threads and many interconnected roots of modern religious expression. While neither guru nor saint (he made no claim of perfection, far from it), his work is exceedingly rare in its grand scope, detail and synthesis. He embraced the wisdom of every tradition and, with a fluid command of the obscure and complex contents of these traditions, worked to express their unifying truths.
