Big data and strategic collaborations are the way of future when it comes to solving genetic challenges in the beef business. This episode covers work that is happening now to inform tools of the future. Christine Baes gives a peak into a multi-disciplinary project she works with on behalf of the Canadian dairy industry, and Andre Garcia draws parallels to what could be possible in the U.S. beef industry. Fertility, efficiency and methane emissions are among the traits that could see new ways for selection pressure in the future.  HOSTS: Miranda Reiman and Kelli Retallick-Riley  GUESTS:  Christine Baes, department head and Canada Research Chair in Livestock Genomics for the University of Guelph, was born and raised on a dairy farm in Southwestern Ontario. She has a bachelor's degree from Guelph, a master's in animal welfare from Universität Hohenheim, and a PhD in quantitative genetics from the Leibniz Institute for Farm Animal Biology and the Christian Albrechts Universität zu Kiel in Germany. She and her team are involved in various large-scale livestock breeding projects (swine, horses, dairy cattle, goats) and bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and practical application of new knowledge. Baes has extensive knowledge in the areas of quantitative genetics and statistical genomics as it relates to the genetic and genomic evaluation of livestock.  In her spare time, she runs a small farm outside of Maryhill. André Garcia, senior geneticist for Angus Genetics Inc. (AGI), grew up in southern Brazil with a diversified agriculture background. In 2015, he earned his animal science degree from Margina State University and followed it with a master's program in animal breeding and genetics. He earned his PhD from the University of Georgia, where he also took on a postdoctoral research position with a strong emphasis on quantitative genetics and the use of genomic information for genetic evaluation. Garcia came to AGI as a research and development geneticist in 2021. He works on genomic evaluation and in an educational role, helping producers understand the technology available to improve their herds. Don't miss news in the Angus breed. In Berlin, a city where values of privacy, living in the moment, and counterculture thrive, the act of taking a selfie can be perceived as awkward. Despite the global selfie trend, Berliners tend to shy away from capturing moments with their phone cameras, considering it somewhat self-indulgent. This cultural nuance is deeply rooted in the city's history and its vibrant club scene, creating a unique atmosphere where people cherish the freedom to live in the moment without the need for constant digital documentation. Berlin's privacy-oriented mindset is not a recent phenomenon. A 2017 study from the University of Hohenheim highlighted that Germans, in general, hold a high regard for personal privacy, disclosing personal information sparingly. This attitude extends to sharing photos on social networks, with only a small percentage finding it useful to do so, particularly among the younger demographic. The former East Germany's experience with state surveillance during the division may contribute to the heightened privacy concerns in the region. The city's renowned club scene, epitomized by establishments like Berghain, ://about blank, and Sisyphos, plays a significant role in shaping Berlin's "no-selfie" culture. These clubs discourage photography to maintain an air of secrecy and encourage patrons to revel in the moment, fostering an environment where counterculture movements, including LGBTQI+ communities and sex-positive groups, can thrive without judgment or external repercussions. This attitude extends beyond clubs, as other spaces in Berlin, such as the Badeschiff pool and post-war memorials, also prohibit or discourage photography for the sake of preserving the moment and respecting the space. As globalization advances and influences seep into Berlin, there is speculation about the potential erosion of the city's distinct values. Privacy concerns within Germany are gradually aligning with global trends, and professionals, such as social influencers, feel the pressure to have an active online presence. However, many Berliners still find taking selfies in public awkward, and the city's unique blend of privacy and liberation remains a defining characteristic. Whether the increasing global influence will impact Berlin's aversion to selfies remains uncertain, but for now, the city continues to embrace its liberating attitude, allowing residents and visitors to enjoy moments without the pressure of constant digital documentation. Counterculture (coun-ter-cul-ture): In Berlin, a city where values of privacy, living in the moment, and counterculture thrive, the act of taking a selfie can be perceived as awkward.Epitomized (e-pi-to-mized): The city's renowned club scene, epitomized by establishments like Berghain, plays a significant role in shaping Berlin's "no-selfie" culture.Repercussions (re-per-cus-sions): Clubs discourage photography to avoid repercussions, fostering an environment for counterculture movements to thrive without judgment.Globalization (glo-bal-i-za-tion): As globalization advances and influences seep into Berlin, there is speculation about the potential erosion of the city's distinct values.Characteristic (cha-rac-ter-is-tic): Many Berliners still find taking selfies in public awkward, and the city's unique blend of privacy and liberation remains a defining characteristic. The Audio Verse Awards Nominee Showcase Podcast

Hey there this is Caleb Thomas Hughes, writer, director, producer, and voice of Simeon on Archion. Archion is a story of found family and the discovery of one's purpose. The show is about the Archion Demonic Hunting League, an organization sworn to protect the human world from the threat of the Archion, a race of mostly human-like creatures that hail from another dimension. A malicious Archion evil, the High Order, is on a constant warpath to take the human world for themselves. The story follows one squad of League agents in particular. Indigo Squad, which is comprised of four members. Simeon Harold, a half human half archion hybrid, Melanie Reeves, a League prodigy with a haunting childhood, Poppy Dennings, an Archion attack survivor turned agent, and Victor Velasco, the goofy and lovable medic. The series follows as their lives become intertwined with the very fate of both the Human and Archion worlds. What you are about to listen to is Episode 10, or the 5th episode of season 2. Archion is a continuous story so while I do recommend you start from the beginning, I'll give you a quick bit of context. In the first few scenes, Hohenheim, Simeon's father, is on the hunt for a serial killer that only targets half-humans. You'll hear them interrogate the top suspect. After that we follow Simeon and Melanie on an adventure back in time in the Viking Age as they prepare to face the menacing beast Jormungandr. Are we facing a healthcare tragedy? Geert Vanden Bossche. Book- The Inescapable Immune Escape Pandemic. Last year we had our first conversation with virologist Dr. Geert Vanden Bossche. Already two years ago, this brilliant scientist warned about the possible negative effects of mass vaccination during a pandemic. Unfortunately, just about all of his predictions have come true so far. Earlier this week, his book "The Inescapable Immune Escape Pandemic" was published. So it was time for a second interview and we are sure you will learn a lot this time as well. His book provides a thought-provoking analysis of the complex interactions between the virus and the host immune system that underlie the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic. The author delves into the impact of mass vaccination on individual and global health, and explains how powerful organizations, institutions, and industries lacking an understanding of this complex environment have turned a natural viral pandemic into one of disastrous immune escape. The author's predictions are compelling and indicate that Nature will correct this mistake, but at a substantial cost to human lives in highly vaccinated countries. The book also highlights the ignorance and arrogance of key opinion leaders and decision-makers in the field as the main reason for this colossal blunder. It is a must-read for anyone interested in understanding the intricacies of the pandemic and the impact of mass vaccination on society. The author's unique approach and reliance on basic scientific principles make this a valuable addition to the literature on the subject. Dr. Vanden Bossche received his DVM from the University of Ghent, Belgium, and his PhD degree in Virology from the University of Hohenheim, Germany. He held adjunct faculty appointments at universities in Belgium and Germany. After his career in Academia, Geert joined several vaccine companies (GSK Biologicals, Novartis Vaccines, Solvay Biologicals) to serve various roles in vaccine R&D as well as in late vaccine development.
