Gentner Drummond. Ryan Walters. Matt Pinnell. A year out from the 2026 primary elections, those three names have emerged as leaders to be Oklahoma's next Republican candidate for governor. The catch? Only one of them has officially declared their candidacy.Drummond, Oklahoma's Attorney General, has a large -— though not insurmountable lead — according to polling released Wednesday by Sooner Survey, which asked 500 registered Republican voters in Oklahoma about their thoughts on likely GOP candidates for governor. Walters, Oklahoma's state schools superintendent, and Pinnell, the lieutenant governor, lag behind Drummond. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I'm your host Tim Landes. Late next year OKPop Museum is slated to open across the street from Cain's Ballroom. Once the doors open museum visitors will walk past an authentic Bob Wills tour bus as they begin learning about our state's rich and diverse history in pop culture and how it connects to today's famous Oklahomans.Blake Ewing is my guest on this episode. He serves as the museum's creative director. He provides a construction update on the new museum and shares when it's slated to open. Blake also talks about some exhibit concepts and how it all fits into an overall goal to connect our past to the present while inspiring future creatives. OKPOP will open on the heels of the television and movie industries embracing Oklahoma as the backdrop for stories to be told, with many of them being written about Oklahoma and/or by Oklahomans. Speaking of some pop culture, if you slept on the first season of Reservation Dogs, it's time to fire up Hulu and enjoy a great show co-created by Sterlin Harjo. It's the first show to be shot entirely in northeast Oklahoma, features the first all-indigenous writers' room in Hollywood and it's got a killer soundtrack featuring numerous Okie musicians. ICYMI, Sterlin was also on the podcast last fall.Blake talks about the greatness that is Rez Dogs and the growing film industry and how both those things mean great things for the museum and our state. Blake is featured in this month's issue in our covers revisited piece from our 2009 downtown issue, when he, Elliot Nelson and Marybeth Babcock graced the cover as leaders of downtown revitalization before the BOK Center and ONEOK Field were built. At the time, Blake owned Joe Momma's Pizza and some other food and bar operations. He was also a city councilor representing downtown, so he's been involved in downtown's growth in various ways over the last two decades. He reflects on those old days of downtown and how it's continuing to grow and evolve, including his buddy Elliot's upcoming Santa Fe Square, which you can read about in our October issue. I love pop culture and downtown, so I had a lot of fun chatting with Blake. Following my conversation with him, hear a song from Thabos. More on that later.Just a reminder that if you haven't already subscribed to this channel, you should. We share two in-depth conversations a month, plus multiple mini episodes of About Town that go behind the scenes of the magazine and more. We also appreciate your ratings.OK, Let's get this going. This is Tulsa Talks with Blake Ewing. Thabos /ta, bos/ is a seSotho noun for one who is never without joy. Thabos' goal is to reach lost ones with his passion of music and art. He started making music on his phone at age 15 in Richmond Virginia, and since then has released over five projects, one being “HIS OWN: MY OWN” which took over 2 years to make in his ORU dorm room. Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. We are now in the giving season. It’s the time of year when we give local businesses money in exchange for gifts that we then give to someone else… or we enjoy ourselves.Sasha Malchi, my guest on this episode, has been in the retail business for nearly a decade. She like every other small business owner in Tulsa needs you to shop local this month more than ever before. Not only does your purchases support them, but it supports their employees, and it supports our city’s efforts to do everything because we rely heavily on sales tax in this city and state. If you’re a regular listener of this podcast, you’ve heard Lt. Gov. Matt Pinnell, Mayor G.T. Bynum, Visit Tulsa’s Ray Hoyt, Magic City Book’s Jeff Martin, Buck Atom’s Mary Beth Babcock and more talk about the importance of spending money in our community. You can add Sasha to the list. In this conversation Sasha discusses how challenging this year has been to run a small business retail operation during a pandemic. Her business Shoppe Sasha is located in Brookside to the north of Pei Wei and just to the east of Ribbons at 35th and South Peoria. As you’ll hear, running a small business wasn’t easy when the world is normal and it’s only become way more challenging in 2020, but Sasha still loves what she does. She takes us behind the scenes and shares insights into how they manage inventory and plan for the holiday months as soon as the holidays end. She talks about her philosophy on how small businesses should work as a community, but still be independent by being unique in what they carry. Sasha has been in Brookside long enough she’s witnessed lots of changes, including her own business location. Her store used to be located in the area where Trader Joe’s now exists. She talks about how the district has evolved and what she hopes to see in the future. In our December issue and at TulsaPeople.com we feature Sasha and some of the home interiors, as well as items for the kitchen, entertaining, jewelry, baby and giftables she has for sale in her shop. This is an important conversation that many Tulsans can relate to. If you know a small business owner, reach out and check on them and more importantly spend money at their store or restaurant. If you haven’t subscribed to this podcast, please do. We are already making plans for our 2021 winter and spring lineup. Normally, this would be the time of year when many Oklahomans hit the road to enjoy the outdoors or beat the heat. Certainly, they would be making plans for celebrating Independence Day. Lieutenant Governor Matt Pinnell discussed the "Imagine That" campaign and the impact of coronavirus on the state with KGOU's Dick Pryor and eCapitol's Shawn Ashley in the latest Capitol Insider.

Welcome to Tulsa Talks presented by Tulsa Regional Chamber. I’m your host Tim Landes. The person you just heard is Matt Pinnell, the Lt. Governor of Oklahoma. Since he announced his 2018 campaign to run for office, Matt has been going nonstop. It’s like he took a brief break to be sworn in and then kept on bouncing around the state. It seems like every day he’s in a different Oklahoma community, celebrating a reason for people to visit. In early November he stopped by our office to chat about his job that is more than turning dirt and cutting ribbons as a dignitary. Matt is the Secretary of Tourism and Branding. It’s a new cabinet position created by Gov. Kevin Stitt to allow Matt to do what he does best, sales and marketing. Our state is extremely dependent on sales tax dollars and tourism creates tremendous opportunities for Oklahoma. As you’ll hear when the conversation kicks off, Matt and his team started working in January and have already seen returns on investments. We discuss the new TravelOK phone app, the new fishing trail and how important Route 66 is to Tulsa and our state’s economy. From there we discuss how he’s working to help make our state the Hollywood of the central US. Following those topics we chat about his career and how he got to where he is today. At 29, the Republican was the youngest state party chair in the country and helped transform Oklahoma’s political landscape. He then worked for the Republican National Committee during the 2014 and 2016 election cycles before returning home and running for office. He reflects on that work and how it’s led him to where he and we are today. Matt shares what he considers the most pressing issues for the administration going into 2020, and we chat about his good friend Mayor G.T. Bynum. Turns out they go way back. Over the past few months, I’ve spent a lot of time following Matt around to groundbreakings, grand openings and chatted with him in his office at the state Capitol. He is full of energy, loves his hometown and the state he resides in and is confident we’ll continue to see the positive results of his work in changing our state’s image. If you’d like to learn more, I wrote about he and Stitt’s first year in office for the December issue that is now available across Tulsa and online at TulsaPeople.com. Following my conversation with the Lt. Governor, City Editor Morgan Phillips reflects on her experience taking part in Black Friday shopping at a major retailer and how it contrasts to doing more shopping at Amaranth Collection on Small Business Saturday. Public-private partnership 101. When business guys get involved in government, big things happen quickly and a terrible state motto ends.
Sylvan Goldman invented the shopping cart in the mid-1930s. Like a lot of entrepreneurs, Goldman was solving a problem for himself. He owned a supermarket in Ardmore, Oklahoma called Humpty Dumpy and although business was good, he knew he’d be able to sell more if he could figure out how customers could carry more products while shopping. Although Goldman continued to make modifications to his original design, it was another Oklahoma inventor who managed to make the shopping cart more functional for parents. Imagine going grocery shopping with a toddler and a newborn. The toddler is in the cart seat, and the baby carrier is in the basket taking up all the room where your groceries are supposed to go. What do you do?Lisa Pinnell, the Founder and Inventor of Binxy Baby found herself in this situation and felt very frustrated. At first, she tried using front and back carriers, then baby wraps, she even resorted to pushing two carts at the same time, and although that was a great workout, it didn’t really solve the problem. After sharing her frustration with her husband Matt, they decided to come up with a solution. Using her experience as a purse maker in college, Lisa invented a shopping cart hammock that wraps around the cart and leaves room for groceries around and under the baby. Lisa and Matt worked on at least 50 prototypes before going to market. The product is now sold all over the world. Matt and Lisa are well on their way to expansion and introducing additional products to their line. Matt recently became Lt. Governor of the State of Oklahoma as well as Secretary of Tourism and Branding. A position he is using to bring awareness to the importance of investing in local entrepreneurs, creatives and inventors. Join us as we learn more about Lisa and Matt’s journey, the early days of Binxy Baby and how they are managing the nuances of entrepreneurship and serving in public office.
Recorded live at Missy's Donuts in Guthrie, OK, we sit down with Lt. Governor Matt Pinnell to discuss his approach to the Lt. Gov position and his other position as Secretary of Tourism & Branding. Support this podcast
“Oklahoma now has a Lieutenant Governor who is also a small business owner,” says Matt Pinnell. “So, naturally, I’m going to be going around the state seeking out opportunities to speak to entrepreneurs.” Before he was Lieutenant Governor, Matt Pinnell and his wife Lisa launched Binxy Baby, a company that sells baby hammocks that fit into shopping carts. Today the business is thriving and there are plans to launch two new products later this year. But the Lieutenant Governor still remembers what it was like at the beginning. “The attention to detail when you’re building a business is so important,” he says. In an interview ahead of his presentation at the March OVF luncheon, the Lieutenant Governor shares what those details look like. “I want to help entrepreneurs connect with the resources they need,” he says. “We have the best career tech infrastructure in the country,” says the Lt. Governor. “Many classes are available to help start-ups bolster their businesses.” The Lieutenant Governor also wants entrepreneurs to tap into the accelerators in the state. “The Thunder Launchpad and OK Innovate are raising money for investment funds. i2E also does a good job in that area. But we need more accelerators.” “We have one of the best states in the country for philanthropic activity. So we need to get those people much more engaged in investing in business ventures.” Engagement is key, especially when it involves connecting with the right people and resources. “When Lisa and I decided to launch our business,” recalls the Lieutenant Governor, “it was a slow build process.” For example, it took time to work through the patent protocol for Lisa’s invention. But that investment, which secured a lockproof patent, means that the Pinnells are able to deal effectively with the legal issues that come with the territory. “It’s very frustrating,” says the Lt. Governor, “to see so many knockoff products on places like Amazon. I want small business owners to realize how important it is to find an attorney who specializes in patent infringement issues.” “We went to experts in different fields very early in the process of building our business,” he recalls. “We identified a professional vendor in New York who specializes in manufacturing facilities in China. She helped us through that process.” “It probably took us an extra year to get our product off the ground, but it paid off for us.”Finding customers and making it easy for them to pay for products is another detail that must be carefully considered. “Shopify has made it easy for us to build the e-commerce side of our business,” says the Lt. Governor. “Another thing that has helped us is social media.” “It is critical for entrepreneurs to quickly find someone who is technology proficient. When social media is done well, it’s a lot easier to grow a business.” Growing a business, it seems, is a lot like growing Oklahoma. That’s why the newly elected Lt. Governor is seeking occasions to speak to individuals who want to invest in entrepreneurship. “I never turn down an interview,” he says, “and I’m always looking for opportunities to speak to people who care about these issues. Reach out to my office* and let’s talk. Because entrepreneurship is the future of Oklahoma.” www.ok.gov/ltgovpinnellInterviewed by Kyle Golding for The Golding Group.

Saving Elephants | Millennials defending & expressing conservative values
What challenges does the GOP face in attracting Millennials and younger Americans to the party? Has Trump permanently changed things? Are political parties even relevant anymore? Who better to answer such questions than Matt Pinnell, who’s held high profile positions with both the state and national party? Matt Pinnell was elected Oklahoma’s 17th Lieutenant Governor of Oklahoma in the 2018 midterm elections. But prior to winning elected office for himself, he was busy helping others do the same. Matt met Saving Elephants host Josh when he was managing the campaign for a candidate for Oklahoma Lt. Governor—which is, serendipitously, the office he has just been elected to. But prior to entering political office himself, Matt was instrumental in helping the Republican party recruit, train, and run successful candidates. Matt took over as the Chairman of the Oklahoma Republican Party when Gary Jones left that position to run for State Auditor. At only 29 years old, Matt was the youngest leader of a state party in the country at the time. He continued the work Gary Jones had begun and oversaw the tremendous shift of power from Democrats to Republicans to the point where all 77 counties voted for the Republican candidate for president in 2008 and again in 2012—earning Oklahoma the title the “reddest state in the nation”. Matt’s work received national attention and he was appointed by Reince Priebus with the RNC to oversee all Republican state parties. His title with the Republican National Committee was Director of State Parties, and he jokes he now has a doctorate in adult daycare. With his relative youth, Matt has had a passion for involving young Americans in the political process and in sharing the values that conservatism can bring to the next generation of Republicans. Matt believes millennials are the most caring and purpose-driven generation to come along, and he’s excited about finding ways to tap into that positive energy to restore the republic.
As the primary run-off nears, we're joined by Republican candidates for Lt. Governor, Dana Murphy and Matt Pinnell, to discuss their perspectives on what that position actually does and their plan for it, should they be elected. Support this podcast
Oklahoma Lt. Governor candidate Matt Pinnell is on DMP discussing state issues, the role of Lt. Governor, why he chose to run, his family and, of course, his defining moment.
Matt Pinnell is a proud Oklahoman who has devoted his professional career to advancing our conservative causes and principles. Matt has served as the Oklahoma Republican Party Chairman and National State Party Director at the Republican National Committee. Matt and his wife, Lisa, are also entrepreneurs starting a business in the kitchen of their Tulsa home. Now, the Pinnells' homegrown venture has turned into a successful international business.
